With the recent commitment of Tobias Harris to Tennessee, the same old questions are popping up again. Usually once or twice a week I’ll get the following question posed to me: “Outside of the usual guys that we hear about a lot, who are some of the other kids that UK is keeping an eye on?” I’ve recently thrown the name Chris Hill out there as one of those guys. Another is 6′4″ wing Justin Coleman.
Scout recently did an interview centered on Coleman’s transfer to Huntington Prep in West Virginia, wherein his new coach, Rob Fulford, talked about Coleman’s situation. Justin has found himself in the land of academic uncertainty but those problems are hopefully going to be fixed during his time in The Mountain State. Fulford also says that he has fielded calls from many schools regarding Coleman, Kentucky included. Some of the other names on his list are Arkansas, UConn, Marquette, Xavier and Kansas.
From a scouting standpoint, you’re going to hear strong, athletic and shooter mentioned quite often with Coleman’s name. He was considered somewhat under the radar around the time of the NBAPA Top 100 camp but definitely showed he belonged with the top players in the country while keeping his name toward the top of the high scorers list there. Rivals currently ranks Coleman as the #8 small forward and #45 overall prospect in the 2010 class. Here’s Scout.com’s quick rundown of the kid: “Justin Coleman had a break out spring and summer. Voted the “Most Surprising Player” at the NBAPA Top 100 Camp, he also won the camp dunk contest. Excellent 3-point shooter, big time finisher. A cross between J.R. Smith and Von Wafer.”
So there ya go. One of the unusual suspects on UK’s radar right now. We’ll have more with Justin Coleman in the near future.

No legitimate Uga heir on the sideline tomorrow = KY win.

I’ve seen the kid play, he’s the real deal. Great shooter and can handle the ball well for a wing player. If the academics are in order, he would definitely be worth a scholarship, especially in lieu of some of our recent misses on the recruiting front.

What the hell’s a Von Wafer?

I don’t think the 6′4″ is correct, I figure him for more like 6″6″.

#4, I thought so too, but both Scout and Rivals have him at 6′4″. I know they measured at the NBA camp. Maybe he just plays bigger or something. Who knows?

#6 That was my attempt at a joke. I just thought that was a real obscure comparison JR Smith and Von Wafer - I guess Von’s a good shooter - Smith obviously the dunker. I bet the scout writer just likes Von a whole lot of is humored by his name and figured what the hell this is a stretch but I’ll use it.

Seriously, isn’t it funny that when you are having academic problems the state that comes to mind to go to is West freaking Virginia? lol

I am officially concerned about the 2010 class. How in the hell do we lose out to UT and Bruce Pearl? Amazing… I am worried….

He is just a ‘talent’! A beautimous player for the game. He got the kind of talent that make ya say, “Michael who?” I know the ladies were really excited to see him at the NBAPA Top 100, and some of the fellas….wel, I’d rather not say. But they were impressed! When quoted, Justin said, “He wanted to come out and give 110%. I felt good. I wanted to play good. The game was good. That was a good win. We got a bunch of good guys out there which makes it easy see that when the cards are all thrown in that the chips will fall where they may.” And other related jibberish. Suffice it to say: None of this matters until the Spring. Rent ‘Bedazzled’ simply for the basketball sequence alone.

I can’t believe so many are worried when out current roster is loaded with 4 and 5 start players. Top recruits want to go where they will fit in and play quickly. UK is not set up very well right now because John Wall, Cousins and Patterson could all return for another year. Not likely because pro teams will draft based on potential, not how they are playing as 18 year olds. Will on know Patrick will for sure go in the first round based on how he plays, but they could all return and these top players would not get minutes, and for that matter, there might not be any scholarships left. Calipari has already changed the look of UK BB. 9 months ago, the Tobias Harris, Brandon Knights and Kyrie Irvings would not even list us. Now they are and we are making their final list. Calipari is a great coach, and once they see he sends players to the pros, the pipeline will flow to Lexington. Some 4 year glue guys, and some celebrity high profile players will make their way to Lexington. 2010 might be filled with a couple late signees like, Leslie, Knight or Selby, and perhaps this Coleman kid or a juco or two. I don’t think Cal will be caught with a depleted roster.
