Well if I had waited until a bit later in the night, I might have made this top story about the crazy football game. But as it is, lets salute the 100th Birthday of Burgess Meredith, an actor known for his great characters. In addition the role of Penguin (seen above), in the original Batman movie of the 1960s, Meredith was probably best known for his role as “Mickey” in the original “Rocky” movie. Meredith played Rocky’s trainer and reprised his role in two sequels, before dying in Rocky III, possibly at the site of the movie including acting from Hulk Hogan. Meredith passed away in 1997, having had an acting career that spanned over 50 years and every conceivable genre. Here on what would have been his 100th birthday, a question to debate. Which of the characters in Rocky is your favorite? Rocky, Apollo Creed, Mr T, Ivan Drago or Hot Lips? It is an important question.
To the news….
(1): Tonight the Cats will take on Miami (OH) in their second game of the season. It is a short turnaround for the Cats who will play a Miami team that is coming off an opening defeat to Towson. Miami is a team that likes to slow down the game and one can expect a lot of zone throughout the contest again. However we do know that the main story for the game will be the John Wall debut as the likely National Freshman of the Year, takes the court for the first time as a UK player. All other stories are secondary but that one and I personally cant wait. Remember where you are when you see the first Wall bucket…and then tell your grandkids one day.
(2): One of the questions going into the game is the status of DeAndre Liggins. Calipari was interviewed today and left it up in the air as to whether Liggins might take the court for the game tonight. The question as to what has happened with Liggins has been one that has gone all over the Big Blue Nation and rumors are rampant in every direction. While I have had no source that I believe knows the entire situation tell me information I can verify, I do believe that the reason for the games missed is not due to on-the-court performance. But what is the issue is clearly not something that will be released and my assumption is that when Liggins plays, we still wont know why he sat out. Tonight could be that first game.
(3): The other big news of the day is that Mike Hartline will sit out the rest of the regular season, although he could potentially be back for the bowl game. This is news that will settle an issue alluded to all game by announcer Andre Ware, which is that the team needed a set Quarterback for the game. That will now be Morgan Newton and it looks like the best option, as Hartline seemed not ready on Saturday. I still believe this team needs more Cobb at QB, but so long as the team is running the ball as it did in the second half, they will be in the last two ballgames.
(4): One little bit of recruiting news today as Doron Lamb announced he would commit this fall to a school, moving up his decision from the Spring. With Tobias Harris also deciding this week, this means that two of UK’s primary targets will also take themselves off the board in the coming days. If neither end up in Blue, then the pressure for UK on the guys waiting until the Spring (like Brandon Knight and CJ Leslie), will increase immensely.
(5): Lastly, two injuries for former UK players this weekend. Keenan Burton went down in the St Louis game today in what looked like a potential knee injury. No word on how long he could be out. And last night Kelenna Azubuike went down for the Golden State Warriors. The hope is that both guys recover quickly, but both injuries do look like they could be significant.
We released Episode 3 of the KSR Podcast series. Alan Cutler joined Woo and the KSR Crew and the entire show is very informative. Cutler goes into detail on his Gillispie interactions and the UK basketball and football wins are discussed. Good times and you can listen below:

Also remember that you can subscribe on ITunes to the show by clicking on this link. We like ITunes subscriptions best because they update automatically a few hours after the show goes up.
We will have more all day as we get ready for the 7 pm game against Miami OH. See you then…..

Meredith was great in “Of Mice and Men” and “Grumpy Old Men.” Clubber Lang best Rocky bad guy.

Man that sucks about Burton. He was so amicable in the last podcast form what I could tell. He seemed like a cool guy. I hope he gets well soon.

I’m not going to lie…
If we miss on Harris AND Lamb, after watching Irving, Kendrick, Payne, and Barton head elsewhere, I’ll officially be worried about the 2010 class.
It “could” still be a great class if we land Leslie/Jones and Knight/Selby, but none of those are definites at this point.
I’d feel much more comfortable “enjoying” this season if we can pick up one more commitment this fall.

Hartline shouldn’t have been rushed back into the Vandy game. That decision made zero sense.
And people are probably going to freak if Hartline starts over Newton next season.
November 16th, 2009 at 6:32 am
#8: Not “if” but “when” because I say it’s a done deal that Hartline will start. Not saying he should, but he probably will. After all, the mantra for the coaching staff seems to be “If something works well, let’s not do it again.”
November 16th, 2009 at 6:55 am
8, 9 - If Brooks is back, there’s a very good chance that Hartline will be “given” the starting job. However, if Joker takes over as head coach, he will go with the best player, and that is not Hartline. Joker will be in the position where he has to worry about W’s and L’s, whereas Brooks will continue with his old man stubbornness.

I like his “old man stubborness”. It is why we are bowl eligible for the 4th year in a row. I’ll take “old man stubborness” over 2-9 or 3-8 every time.
November 16th, 2009 at 7:33 am
11- is “old man stubbornness” the only way to get 6 wins?
November 16th, 2009 at 7:40 am
people have awful short memories around here. do you guys remember what football was like BEFORE old man brooks?
November 16th, 2009 at 8:19 am
13- lol, I remember the Claiborne years really well and on, Curci I was a little to young to remember well. My only point is that if Brooks was a little more flexible I think he might be able to get an extra win or two this season. I just don’t see it as an either/or proposition, being that you can either have horrible football or you can have exactly what we have now and nothing else.
November 16th, 2009 at 8:24 am
13. I remember the Curry futility as well as anyone. What was your point again?
November 16th, 2009 at 8:33 am
<— Has been worried about the 2010 class.

Anyone who thinks Apollo is the best villain needs to realize that Drago KILLS HIM in the 4th installment with his steroid-consumed body. Advantage: Drago
If he dies, he dies

If we wait til this kid’s in the 8th grade to be recruiting him, he’ll be long gone:

Clubber Lang is easily the best villian because he shows no good will or respect for Rocky after he loses. All the other fighters(even Drago) congratulate Rocky or have some sort of new respect for him. Mr.T would crush Rocky if they had another rematch.
Real Villains do not have a change of heart at the end.

Cats by 25 tonight…..80 - 55..
November 16th, 2009 at 9:03 am
All the worrying about 2010 recruits are silly. There will be plenty of guys begging to come here for 2010 after the season. Top recruits are waiting to see how the team does and who leaves early for the NBA.
November 16th, 2009 at 9:06 am
15. if you cant see my point, then you are too young. ive been around watching uk football for over 50 years. and there has been way more bad then good. like brooks or not, this is the good
November 16th, 2009 at 9:12 am
Yeah I remember the Curry years especially after he started Tim Couch against UF…We were lucky to have Couch walk away from that train wreck

22)I think your point is well taken, but when other players have proved more capable at the position in two consecutive seasons, it’s time to pass the torch. The injuries have provided Brooks the perfect opportunity to move Newton in. It’s time to do what’s best for the team and put the best QB in the backfield.
November 16th, 2009 at 9:27 am
I love the Brooks’ stubborn self but I really hope he doesn’t give Hartline the starting nod next season. Here’s what needs to happen (IMO) next season (and beyond):
2010: Morgan Newton is QB #1 with Cobb as Wildcat QB. Moss takes a few snaps against non-SEC teams (and Vandy) to get primed.
2011: Newton continues as #1 QB but starts splitting time with Moss in order to continue his development
2012: Newton as a senior is #1 QB option, but 60/40 split with Moss
2013: Moss is QB
Remember, the team not only needs to develop Newton but Moss as well.
November 16th, 2009 at 9:47 am
Prediction: Pain……………..
November 16th, 2009 at 9:50 am
26. That’s exactly what needs to happen, but will they do it is the question? Since Joker will be the head coach, you should probably fill out an application for offensive coordinator.
November 16th, 2009 at 10:22 am
#28: At least if I were the OC I wouldn’t be scared of running plays that have shown to work (i.e. Locke to Newton). That’s what frustrates me more about this team than anything, the play calling. Joker’s done a heckuva job but he baffles me way too often. For example, at Vandy, when we scored, we did so because we ran the Wildcat a few different times, Newton was in control, and the team was clicking. And what do we do to end the half? Bring on Hartline! Or at South Carolina, we bring in Fidler for the two-point conversion! We have a legitimate reason to believe we could be 8-2 right now, with our only losses to the #1 and #2 teams in the country. I think that would be good for at least a Top-15 ranking and we’d be looking at 2nd in the East. And, if the stars alinged and we beat UGa and UT, we would finish 10-2. But, most likely we finish 6-6 because of terrible play calling. Arrghhh! Why does Joker make it so easy to focus on basketball and forget about football.
November 16th, 2009 at 10:44 am
Brooks has done a good job of bringing the program this far. HOWEVER, we have taken a step backwards the last 2 years, and I for one am not happy with 6-6 and 2-6 in the SEC. Are you really OK with that? When we become consistently 4-4 (or better) in the conference, then I’d say Brooks (or whoever the head coach is) has really done something. We have basically scheduled our way to 6 wins the last 4 years, and the best we have been in the SEC is 3-5. We are still at the bottom of the conference (except for Vandy), but should have won both the South Carolina and Mississippi State games (lost due to poor coaching). I think there is plenty to complain about.

If anyone is worried about the 2010 recruiting class, I’d hate to have seen you back towards the end of Tubby’s tenure. Chill out, John Calipari is our coach and everything will be fine.
