[Moderated by Matt Jones]

Its a Thursday Night, so why not ten random thoughts on Christmas Eve for UK fans:
1.: What I am most interested in seeing tomorrow night is how Calipari will work the big man rotation during the game. The perimeter substitutions still wont be clear without Wall in the game, but how Cal uses the big men will be given some light. One has to think that he will almost always have two of the Patterson/Cousins/Orton/Stevenson/Harrellson combo in the game. Who will get the most minutes? Is Patrick always at the 4 or does he get some time in the post spot at the 5? Will Perry jump ahead of Jorts in the rotation? In whatever amounts to crunch time, is it Cousins or Orton? All interesting questions.
2. If I never see Doug Gottlieb on television again, it will be too early. Unlike most of my televisions dislikes which are personal (if you are nice to me, I like you…I am easily bought off), I have never met Gottlieb or tried to have him on our shows. Rather he just strikes me as obnoxious and hypocritical. No one is quicker to write people off as having bad character than Doug…who himself was charged with ripping off a teammates’ credit cards in college. The less Gottlieb the better.
3.: The chat with Jeff Goodman today on the LIVE BLOG was great. He has the Cats in the Final Four, Billy Clyde getting another job soon, Matt Pilgrim being a chemistry killer, John Wall as a special talent unlike any other and other interesting comments. Definitely worth a read if you missed it.
4.: Who is the musical group you are most embarrassed about liking? I am not easily embarrassed, but if I were, then the amount that I have been jamming Rod Stewart recently could turn me red. You?
5.: Keep an eye on Ole Miss this year. This is the season they make a run and the games between them and Mississippi State will be the best that rivalry has seen…potentially ever.
6.: Put me in the corner of wanting to see Mike Hartline Saturday for most of the game. Newton is the future and I have confidence in him. But Hartline gives you the best chance to win now…and the Cats HAVE to win.
7.: Alan Cutler is the podcast guest this week and Woo has already promised “hard-hitting” questions of the moustached one. I am pre-emptively giddy. The podcast will also soon be making a trip to Richmond, and Drew should be ready to face the wrath of the EKU women he scorned in his post.
8.: I am going to the UK Women’s team opener tomorrow at 11 am at Memorial. One might ask why the game is at that time, but since I have to be in Lexington for Jones and Bruce duties anyway, it will mean I get to catch the game. It is the first UK women’s game I have attended live…and I am looking forward to it.
9.: Watching the Heat-Cavs game, I am amazed at the sheer quantity of tattoos on display. I have never considered tattoos but I have to think that most of these on the players are meaningless. In fact having Laodu translate NBA Chinese character tattoos might be a good segment on future blogs.
10.: One more question (you have to answer the music one as well). What random moment in UK basketball history makes you happiest? Now I want you to stretch deep on this one…dont just pick a win or Magloire putting Wojo in the rack. Think of something few people remember but you. Mine is Jamaal Magloire related, but no with Wojo. I loved when the Cats played Miami (OH) in 1999 in the Sweet 16 and as Magloire ran off the court, the Miami Redhawk got in his way and he knocked it down without breaking stride. That replay is not on Youtube but should be soon. Yours?
OK, apparently it is on tape:
Oh and here is a dunk from Dwayne Wade about 20 minutes ago….sick:
Let me know….its Thursday night and I am ready to reminisce.

Going to be a fun winter!
November 12th, 2009 at 8:44 pm
How the hell is the first game of the New Era in College Basketball only on ESPNU(which I don’t have by the way)? This is Communism in it’s purist form.
November 12th, 2009 at 8:47 pm
Can someone please explain why Michael Jordan, the President of Basketball Operations for the CHARLOTTE BOBCATS, is at the Heat/Cavs game? He’s not scouting since he has no shot at anyone on either of these teams and he’s not evaluating talent because, well, if you’ve seen his drafts he cannot evaluate talent. What’s this? Wade just signed a big Nike deal with the Jordan brand? Oh that makes perfect sense…what a joke Jordan has become…as have I apparently for being a Bobcat season ticket holder.
November 12th, 2009 at 8:47 pm
So, in hindsight, Goodman saying that he had IU as #2 in the nation was clearly a joke. I don’t know why it took me song long to get it.
November 12th, 2009 at 8:48 pm
Pilgrim is a beast.
November 12th, 2009 at 8:49 pm
Basically, you like Goodman because he likes you and tells you what you want to hear. Favorite random moment is kinda a bad moment for UK. Rodney Dent tears his ACL and then comes back to the bench. While the camera focuses on him, he plucks a bat out of the cave. Just glad he did not eat it.
November 12th, 2009 at 8:51 pm
I’m pretty sure I’ve seen that replay on youtube.

November 12th, 2009 at 8:53 pm
Easy. Charles Barkley sitting on the floor crying after Sky Walker hit a last secondshot to beat Auburn in the 1984 SEC Championship game.
November 12th, 2009 at 8:54 pm
I do have to agree with Goodman on Clydes getting another job soon. I hear those Southwest boarder town beer joints are always looking for people with unbelievable toughness and passion on a daily basis.(No Drivers License required.)
November 12th, 2009 at 8:57 pm
My obscure memory is when Cliff Hawkins slapped the ball out of that Ole Miss point guards hand after a whistle (really short guy, I can’t remember his name). Ole Miss guard tried to get in Cliff’s face, but Cliff just put his hands on his hips and looked at the guy as if he were a pouting little kid.
November 12th, 2009 at 8:57 pm
Just the first one that popped in my head, tubby chest bumping Stockton!UK#1
November 12th, 2009 at 8:57 pm
Taylor Swift and when Antoine Walker slapped the floor and 5′8″ Geno Ford of Ohio U drove right past him for a layup.
November 12th, 2009 at 9:00 pm
I love #12….one of the VERY few times I have ever cheered for a dude making a play against the Cats
November 12th, 2009 at 9:03 pm
I’ll admit to a disproportionate appreciation for Jon Secada. My obscure UK memory is when Nazr first appeared with the shaved head back in ‘98. It seemed like he turned into a completely different player after that.
November 12th, 2009 at 9:05 pm
Preston LeMaster’s senior day. He hit four threes out of nowhere and it served as a reminder that the guys who (used to) walk on were better than EVERYONE on the court when they played in high school (I think LeMaster averaged 38 ppg in high school), and that their decision to put on the blue and white came at the expense of a full scholarship at a lower D-1 school. Always cool to see.
November 12th, 2009 at 9:07 pm
Easy.
I remember laughing for days after Ford stole the free throws from… (riddick maybe) and then told the media after the game.
Smoothest move in college basketball history.
November 12th, 2009 at 9:07 pm
Derek Anderson shooting the FTs against Minnesota in 97
November 12th, 2009 at 9:12 pm
1.) Though we hopefully won’t matter tomorrow, I believe the big Perr-Bowski could earn some crunch time minutes for free throw shooting and senior maturity.
2.) Watching Gott-thief on TV tonight, I had to explain who he was. Her response: “The one with the pointy nose?…Stole credit cards?…He does seem like a prick.”
3.) Goodman seems like a good man.
4.) Ace of Base…”Don’t Turn Around”, “I Saw the Sign”…I’m not even embarrassed. They’re awesome!
5.) Ole Miss will win the West this year, write it down.
6.) Hartline for Heisman.
7.) I miss seeing Woo holding beer mugs as Two Keys and them looking like demitasse cups in his giant hands.
8.)
9.) I imagine some of the NBA tats says things as enlightening as “I love pot” and “My entourage is raping my bank account”
10.) Best UK moment: While in the student section we though Ronald Dupree and the LSU Fighting Tigers were gonna charge the stands Artest style and try and demolish us as they went down the visitor tunnel after a game my sophmore year.
November 12th, 2009 at 9:14 pm
Jeff Brassow last second dunk against Arizona im Mauii… Happy Birthday Neil Young!!
November 12th, 2009 at 9:17 pm
Did you know if you spell Douchebag backwards you get Gotleib?
November 12th, 2009 at 9:18 pm
Rondo’s one handed cross over/behind the back dribble. He got called for some violation, but it was clean, and ridiculously awesome.
November 12th, 2009 at 9:18 pm
Gotta love the 3 point dagger that Padgett hit to beat Duke in the St.Pete Regional Final. The replay of him turning and running down the court with both arms in the air is PRICELESS UK PRIDE.
November 12th, 2009 at 9:21 pm
Here’s the youtube video of the Rondo move I’m talking about.

I’ve got two of the most random things I have seen. The first was when Sheray Thomas moved during the SEC tournament and the second was when Clyde had Perry Stevenson block the free throw during the SEC tournament at Georgia Tech.
November 12th, 2009 at 9:23 pm
21, that was one of the most badass things I have ever seen.
November 12th, 2009 at 9:26 pm
1984. Leroy Byrd.
The crowd senses Leroy Byrd is going to get into the game against Tennessee and everyone goes bonkers. Sure enough, Byrd gets in and as he inbounds and brings the ball up the court the crowd is going absolutely insane.
You know, I’ve got enough random UK memories to write a book.
November 12th, 2009 at 9:31 pm
1. Wham/George Michael. George gets a little frisky in port-a-potties, but he can sing and song-writing was underrated. Culture Club not far behind.
2. Kenny Walker’s blocked shot of a random University of Washington guard in 1984-85 NCAA Tourney. Best UK block I’ve ever seen. Can never find on YouTube. Matt, ask Kenny about it. He blocked the guys shot into a balcony that was above the top of the backboard, as I recall.
November 12th, 2009 at 9:33 pm
i thought that today while i was watching espn’s college preview, they had UK on the screen talking about heading to this years final 4. while the bottom line scrolled across UT players arrested on armed robery.
November 12th, 2009 at 9:33 pm
was pretty awesome
November 12th, 2009 at 9:38 pm
#27 I remember that…And yes, Skywalker nearly threw that guys shot out of the building.
November 12th, 2009 at 9:41 pm
I used to have a poster when I was in high school of Kenny Walker doing a windmill dunk against some random, terrible team. Wish I still had that.
November 12th, 2009 at 9:42 pm
Vanillia Ice… ice ice baby…da da da dada da…
Most Random moment… 1993 final four.. bringing Mash back to be with the team..
Is Friday the 1st game of the Cal era or just an Ice cream social…
Hey Matt did ya get my email about Jorts… could you imagine the look on Cal’s face,
like “WTF are you doing”… geez I crack myself up..
November 12th, 2009 at 9:44 pm
Ramel, standing on his tip toes, telling Andrew Bogut to “Do something!” And the 32 foot long arm of Shagari coming from off the screen to pluck him away.
Or the Mike Davis melt-down. Hard to pick one.
November 12th, 2009 at 9:45 pm
1) I have a couple of guilty pleasures: The Cars, Prince, and Fatboy Slim.
2) Todd Svoboda’s 3-pointer was the bomb, it came against Florida State in 1993.

Seriously.. can you believe we sat and watched a door… think about that. We watched
a flippin door. WE ROCK
November 12th, 2009 at 9:50 pm
#19- And Pitino couldn’t find anybody who wanted to celebrate with him…
November 12th, 2009 at 10:01 pm
As far as music…you wouldn’t believe the looks I got at Bristol this year while listening to some Prince.
Best recent memory is Patrick Sparks nailing that three to beat Louisville…
November 12th, 2009 at 10:02 pm
When we beat Maryland, and Stevie Franchise at Rupp. The loudest game that I have been to.
November 12th, 2009 at 10:04 pm
Doug Gottlieb is like the snitch in the mobster world.
He talks smack, but if a bunch of Cat fans surrounded him he would sing “On On U of K” until the sun rose.
November 12th, 2009 at 10:13 pm
Moody Blues. 98 season when we lost to Ole Miss. I was at the game and got my whole family tickets, and I remember feeling bad that I got them tickets for a game we lost. I also remember having no hope in that team, I think I might have been a little harsh.

Duran Duran
It was 1986 and I was 13 years old. I was in Oxmoor mall at some little pizza place, which is long since gone, down by sears and for the first time in my life I understood what the big deal was about the rivalry with Louisville. That summer my family moved from Hopkinsville to Shelbyville and at the new middle school there i encountered actual card fans. The entire UK-UL game with every one of Rex Chapman’s 26 points is my favorite memory as a wildcat fan. By a mile the best experience i ever had anywhere near a mall.
November 12th, 2009 at 10:29 pm
When Eric Manuel dunked the ball with two hands and it hit the top of his head and came back through the hoop the wrong way and they waved off the basket.
Negative memory: When they called Prince for traveling against St Johns and it cost us the game up at MSG. Still pisses me off today.
November 12th, 2009 at 10:32 pm
Derek Anderson’s dunkfest(s) on IU/UL. Knew that team was special - as if we needed proof.
November 12th, 2009 at 10:34 pm
Jimmy Buffett.
Senior Night 1995 vs. LSU. My last game as a student. I was taking photos for the SAB literally sitting ON THE FLOOR a foot from the out of bounds line directly across from the UK bench. Toward the end of the game the Cats were DESTROYING lsu and Andre Riddick caught a pass at the top of the key, thought about a three, quickly looked at Pitino for permission like, “Hey coach, it’s senior night can I?” and was denied by the “Don’t you effen do it!” look from Coach P. The bench(Delk, Walter, Epps…) just lost it and started throwing their towels at Pitino who couldn’t help it and started cracking up himself. I think Andre ended up hoisting one or two anyway.
November 12th, 2009 at 10:42 pm
#41-thanks for the heads up. Checked it out and Drew took care of business.
November 12th, 2009 at 10:57 pm
My favorite moment would be in the 2003 SEC tournament when UK was in control (can’t remember who they were playing) but Shargari was in mop up duty and bricked a wide open dunk, all 7′3″ of him…I laughed my ass off, just thinking how the hell he could have missed that..luckily the game was already decided.
November 12th, 2009 at 10:58 pm
Patterson picking his nose and eating the booger was pretty hilarious.
November 12th, 2009 at 11:08 pm
Feb. 19, 2005 - College Gameday was here for the Miss State game. Rondo had 8 steals in the game. Afterwards, there was a guy walking around with a sign that read “Rondo stole my sign”. I still have a picture of it. Good times.
November 12th, 2009 at 11:14 pm
Nasty dunk by DWade. Sideshow Bob’s feet hitting the padding was hilarious.
November 12th, 2009 at 11:25 pm
All the games I think of came in the 2005 season when we went to the elite eight, as I watched listened to games at a gas station, at a Miami Heat game, and on a cruise ship. The most memorable moment was in the SEC tourney when we killed Tennessee for win 1900, as Sparks fed Rondo on a fast break with a pass through the legs, then a dunk by Rondo. I’ll never forget that game.
November 12th, 2009 at 11:25 pm
UGA in I think 93. Billy Ray Cyrus sang the national anthem before the game. He was at the peak of his popularity then. Anyway, Mash went off that afternoon, hitting shots from everywhere. Late in the game he pretended like he was pulling up from about 35 feet out, enough to get the crowd to yell “three!” only to pull it back down and have the crowd laugh along with the players. What a great day that was. Also, I love “party in the usa.”
November 12th, 2009 at 11:34 pm
Forgot to mention in February of that same season (2005) I also listened to updates from our pilot on a flight from Atlanta to Lexington on my way to a funeral, it was Miss St. I believe.
November 12th, 2009 at 11:40 pm
1. the bee-gee’s
2. i gotta go with the brassow tip-in at maui invitational as well, although it is hard to pick one out of all the memorable uk moments. it is a great time to be a UK fan and i almost feel like a kid on christmas eve tonight. its gonna be a helluva fun season. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wdYt9K3GgMM

Easy… March 12th, 1993, the SEC Tournament in Lexington where (#4) Kentucky beats Tennessee 101 - 40… the best part? Allan Houston was held to 3pts (going 1 for 15) in his last game as a Vol.
And yes, earlier that season, Houston DID step over the FT line when UK lost in Thompson-Boling (maybe one of the worst non-Duke or SEC-only moments)… but the tourney matchup made me happy.
November 13th, 2009 at 12:24 am
Random moment(s)- One I always just smile about was the 95/96 season I believe when we played vandy or lsu when I think it was epps who passed the ball off the backboard and Walter McCarty trailed that and just slammed it in; priceless.
Another moment is just one word to sum it up- Mashburn - I loved it when we had the song monster mash play for him
November 13th, 2009 at 1:09 am
I’ve been reading this site for awhile now, can someone tell me what it means
when someones user name is highlighted blue instead of black?? just wondering ….
November 13th, 2009 at 1:41 am
Memories: Dec 1978-Kansas at Rupp w/6 pt lead and less than a minute to play. Cats came back to win in OT. 1987-Vols leading late and looked to have the game won. The crowd was leaving Rupp, lower level really looking empty, when the Cats rallied and came back to win in OT. The only time I’ve ever seen fans rushing back into a game they had left.
November 13th, 2009 at 7:07 am
Patrick Sparks is one of my favorite UK players of all time. People remember his half-court three, his performance to come back and beat Louisville on the road, and of course his last second heroics in regulation against Michigan State.
What most don’t remember is one of my favorite UK games of all time. We were on the road against Alabama and trailing by 18 at halftime. I was 15 at the time, and had promptly written on my yahoo messenger (yeah) status something to the effect of “Comeback Cats!” without ever really giving them a chance. That’s when Sparks went crazy and led the team back with a barrage of threes against some Alabama deuces every trip down the court. Even though Alabama still played well, Sparks led the team back and UK came out with the win. I was literally smiling for the rest of the night after that game.
November 13th, 2009 at 7:12 am
Me and my buddies watchin the UK vs. florida game in 06-07; horford gets the run out and dunks, on the replay you can see Rondo simply say “F***K YOU N*G*A”! i’m not gona lie, that made that game a little bit better!UK#1
November 13th, 2009 at 7:41 am
I was at Rupp for the Auburn game that was Charles Barkley’s last at Kentucky. He had pretty much owned us throughout his career (although I can’t tell you what Auburn’s record was against us). But that day, we put a whuppin’ on Auburn. I remember Barkley sitting on the Rupp Arena floor, head bowed in hands, dejected after the mighty Wildcats had defeated him and the Tigers. I still have that vision in my head.
November 13th, 2009 at 8:38 am
1. Crash Test Dummies (’cept I hate that mmm, mmm song)
2. ‘95 v. UGA @ Rupp. We were up 33 at half. We won by only 11. At 12:01am Pitino made the entire team run until they puked.
November 13th, 2009 at 8:39 am
Agree with #17. DA didn’t wait to be told to go in. He jumped off the bench and coolly made two big free throws.
November 13th, 2009 at 8:59 am
Elton John and Kenny Walker dunking on the entire Louisville team late in 1985. Was in a room full of fellow UK fans/college students and we were unable to watch the next five minutes for high fiving and screaming.
November 13th, 2009 at 9:03 am
Rashaad Carruth punking Coach K at the Meadowlands — perhaps his only UK highlight (other than sporting his own McD’s AA jersey around campus).
Also, Senior Day 2003 when Tubby presented John Stewart’s parents with what would have been his jersey was pretty special. Gave me chills and still does just thinking about it.
November 13th, 2009 at 9:03 am
Obviosuly Kenny Walker did the dunking. Somehow I don’t picture Elton John with mad hops…
November 13th, 2009 at 9:40 am
66. I, too, have Elton John as my guilty pleasure. Good stuff.
circa ‘92 - ‘93, I was at a party on campus at the Lamda Chi house, after that season’s Sr night. The basketball team all showed up at the party. I went up to Todd Svoboda and told him I was the president of his fan club and he literally picked me up and bear hugged me like a rag doll, and I’m 6′2″ and 200 lbs at the time. Good times. Talking with Jeff Brassow at the party, I told him a few of us were there from UofL and he visibly got irate that he was even talking to me and felt compelled to yell that he kicked their ass that year. I had to explain to him that I was a UK fan and that a good chunk of the students at UofL are actually UK fans like myself. He said that’s cool then and we drank a beer.
November 13th, 2009 at 9:51 am
96 Championship game…2 on 1 fast break with Delk and Anderson vs Bergman. Really unselfish passing (probably a little OVER-passing…Delk and D.A. probably touched the ball 3 or 4 times EACH) with Delk getting the bucket and one.
November 13th, 2009 at 10:06 am
MATT I AM A HUGE ROD STEWART FAN! I AM GAY TOO…ARE YOU?
November 13th, 2009 at 10:17 am
guilty musical pleasure…somebody beat me to it, but I get sucked in when I hear party in the usa by miley cyrus
favorite random UK moments…every second of every game that chuck hayes played. but here’s a really random one for you: in a loss at Florida, one of the gaytors put up a halfcourt shot at the buzzer and jamaal magloire goaltended it…i’ve missed having a thug like him around here.
November 13th, 2009 at 11:02 am
Favorite random moment: LSU at UK 1990. People talk about the crowd being crazy at other games, this game was the best. The crowd kept the C-A-T-S cheer going long after the time out had expired. Rick tried to quiet the crowd but it didn’t work. The UK defense frustrated Shaq so bad, he spiked the ball on the court so hard that it nearly hit the scoreboard.
November 13th, 2009 at 11:05 am
2nd random moment: I was a band geek during the first 4 years of Pitino’s tenure. We were walking into the Charlotte arena and being badgered by the UNC fans running the gates. We walked in during the WKU-FSU game and the crowd started cheering. Everyone knew that UK was in the house.
November 13th, 2009 at 11:09 am
#74 That was during the ‘93 tournament.
November 13th, 2009 at 11:30 am
I remember the Walker block to which 27 and 30 were referring and as a kid it was fantabulous. But then last year I saw another game in the Reno arena and noticed that the upper deck isn’t that high. Still was pretty cool.
November 13th, 2009 at 12:47 pm
My favorite moment was the LSU comeback game. I was like 12 years old and my whole family turned the game off at half time accept me. I told them all that we would come back and win….and well you all know the rest!…I got so excited that I some how managed to break the foot stool in front of the couch….I didn’t even mind getting grounded for it.
