Some Early Thursday Notes

by @ 11:37 pm. Filed under Blue Blooded Opinions

arena1

It is late on what has been a VERY long, but great, day. A few notes:

— See that picture above? A poster on TCP found it and saw this link, suggesting this could be the first drawing of the renovation of Rupp Arena by ISG. The project is set to potentially begin in January 2010, according to the website, and the new look will be an attempt to modernize the facility. Is this the real deal? Who knows….but what do you think if its?

Stacey Poole became a Cat tonight as he signed on the dotted line to UK. Poole is the only player in the 2010 class to sign and his commitment should make UK fans very happy. He will be able to put points on the board and guard his man without help…two keys to the Calipari system.

— As Dustin Rumbaugh has insisted all week, Terrence Jones tweeted out tonight that he still doesnt know when he will decide, and that it could be Spring or Fall. Jones is a talent and a fall decision by him could get the heartbeat pumping in Bluegrass country. Tobias Harris is scheduled to announce his decision next week.

— Also big props to the women’s team and Matthew Mitchell. Mitchell signed a top 10 class today, including three girls ranked in the top 60 in the nation. Very impressive haul by Mitchell and one of the strongest recruiting classes the UK women have ever seen.

— Today is likely the day that it will be determined whether Mike Hartline or Morgan Newton take the field at Vandy. Hartline had little swelling after practice today and from all indications is looking good in his return. It is obvious that if healthy, the staff wants him to go….today is likely when that decision will be known for certain.

— Former Dukie Jay Williams said he liked the Cats to win it all during the dreadful UNC-NC Central game tonight. Williams is still one of the best scoring PGs I have seen in recent college basketball and he loves John Wall as a possible heir apparent…and he should.

Today was one of those great days that dont happen very often. The whole iTunes #1 sports podcast was amazing and as I go to bed tonight, we still sit there now. I cant thank you guys enough for all your support over the past few years in helping make this stuff happen. You folks make all of this worthwhile and I really do appreciate it.

JEFF GOODMAN LIVE BLOG at 1 PM. The college basketball guru from Foxsports.com will be here to impart his college basketball wisdom and chat about the Cats (he likes them A LOT). Make sure and show up and give questions.

More all day….two days until it all begins…..

Congrats to my cousin’s cousin (yeah that probably makes no sense) signing with the UK women’s team

  2. KSR reader Says:

The design does not look to bad for a future Rupp

  3. D.C.cat Says:

    Love the new Rupp’s look.

  4. Cats R Back Says:

The article has it worderd incorrectly, they aren’t renovating the current Rupp, they are building a brand new Rupp across High Street where the parking lot currently is. Also, don’t forget they are building a new baseball stadium and doing a major renovation to Commonwealth! Total cost: over 500 million.

  5. justXwes Says:

i would much rather see them rebuild rupp where it stands. no point in having 2 monster arenas across the screen from each other

  6. P.PattersonISwalkingthruthatdoor Says:

isn’t that link from 2008? if so, a 2010 “kickoff for construction” sounds pretty unlikely

  7. ibleedblueforUK Says:

i really like the new look w/ all the glass….maybe they could do without the light brown exterior color & go withh a darker color IMO

  8. P.PattersonISwalkingthruthatdoor Says:

    (6) nevermind. that’s the timestamp for another article

  9. ibleedblueforUK Says:

BTW, anyone know the planned total seating they’re aiming for in the new arena?

  10. HighOnUK Says:

The external of Rupp is a little plain so I’m glad to see that they’re willing to spice it up. Maybe a little too wooden for me, but I like it a lot more than the current look…

  11. HanOfTheBluegrass Says:

    5) I imagine it would take too long (if not be impossible physically) to update Rupp. Shutting down “Old Rupp” to remodel it to the extent they want would be a major revenue hit. This way, they can continue to have concerts and games and monster trucks in old Rupp while building the new arena, which will probably end up named “The Coal Mine.” I kid.

  12. HanOfTheBluegrass Says:

    7) Like blue? Just so long as they repaint it when necessary to keep it from fading to a more gay color. (That’s a callback, btw.)

  13. bpisforuk Says:

There is a need for a modern look, like the look of the windows (kinda like Tampa).
But give me ties to the past as well. Statues of Issel, Rupp, Cawood and Keightley on the outside w/ historic images hung around the inside corridors.

  14. slappy Says:

I’ll be more interested to see what the inside of the new arena looks like, where it’s going to be, and what’s going to be around it. No doubt it’ll be the most awesome college basketball arena in the US. Think the Cowboys’ stadium for college basketball.

  15. sethicus59 Says:

11- if its anything other than rupp arena im staging a riot.

  16. sethicus59 Says:

12, that would cost SO much money.

  17. ukisgr8 Says:

#5, seriously dude? Don’t you “thunk” they would tear the old Rupp down when they finish the new one?

#15, no one names a new building the same as the old one. Again, the biggest donor gets naming rights. I really don’t care what they call it personally if they build it, all that concerns me is that the team has a nice place to play and we have a nice place to watch it.

  18. Azubuikebicep Says:

Is that wood on the outside of the arena? This looks like something that belongs in Portland Oregon, not Lexington.

  19. Ky76 Says:

I really hope that’s not the new design….UK’s Arena should look intimidating on the outside…….The facility should represent the fortress that is the Home to BIG BLUE NATION. IMO.

  20. bcat Says:

Those panels can easily change material and color, even be metallic. I love the modern asymmetry and expressiveness of the exterior that seemingly can’t contain the energy inside. Good temple for basketball.

  21. ukisgr8 Says:

#19, sort of like Rupp Arena? It’s the pansiest looking arena in america. That right there would be the #1 arena in america and intimidation takes place on the court and with our voices, not the outside of the arena. Do you really think people are scared because we have statues of Popeye at the doorway? Really??

  22. ukisgr8 Says:

#20, Amen brother. It’s design is perfect for the king of college basketball

  23. BravoBigBlue Says:

The plan is to BUILD a new arena, not renovate the existing Rupp Arena (as some posters have correctly pointed out above). Also, that is not wood on the sructure; it is some kind of rock. Thirdly, there has been talk that the City of Lexington would renovate the existing Rupp Arena, including taking off the top level and turning the building into to a “fine arts” facility for concerts, plays, etc.

Whatever is done, the new Rupp needs to have chairback seats throughout.

  24. gawdi Says:

#17, you’re right. I can’t think of any place that has named a new arena the same as the old arena it’s replacing. With that in mind, it needs to be named Keightley Arena. Nothing else will do!!!

  25. silverado Says:

    Build that on campus!

  26. jon in jeff Says:

Hopefuly the city and univercity would name it something along the lines of “KFC’s Rupp Arena”, incorporating both the donors name and Rupp. (Just used KFC as an example) I’ve heard that they are looking at seating about 30,000. That way they sell-outs are still attainable for UK games but the NCAA would use it for tourney games as well.

25- It would be downtown across from Rupp because the city will still own it.

  27. HELLcat Says:

May as well douse your dreams of having the new arena named after a UK great… It will absolutely be a corporate name

  28. macon_volfan Says:

    #27-Coal Arena?

  29. cmbrown15 Says:

Longtime listener, first-time poster. That’s a generic arena design that could be anywhere in the country. You don’t look at it and think, “THAT’S where Kentucky plays.” What’s the point of all the windows? To give folks an exciting view of Cox Street or the vast parking lot? Miami’s NBA arena has the ocean view; even Louisville’s will have the river. I like Rupp but there’s nothing downtown that justifies that glass outer wall.

Now, the real reason I posted: The podcast shooting up the charts is a great achievement but, if you haven’t already, isn’t it time to submit a more recognizable/mature/dignified/non-generic logo for the thing? Class it up! I know there are issues with using the UK logo but slap your smilin’ mug, a field of royal blue or something up there. Heck, ask your buddy Coach Cal for ideas.

  30. dkplayer Says:

#17 - Everything I’ve seen suggest they are going to keep the current Rupp in its place even if/after a new arena is built.

And it’s not an arena I guess, but the St. Louis Cardinals kept the name Busch Stadium.

  31. OneAndDone Says:

That’s a free standing building, Rupp isn’t…. just sayin

  32. OneAndDone Says:

And it’s on a corner, they have failed if that is a renovation picture

  33. jon in jeff Says:

30- They are planning on basicaly tearing down 1/2 to 3/4 of it (that includes reducing the heigth on the building) and making it a convention ceter and concert hall, and using some of the space for parking.

  34. bcat Says:

The cars shown on “High” are on a one way street going away from “Broadway”. Only makes sense as a new arena in the current parking lot. Putting it right up against Broadway makes a lot of sense. It also already makes Louisville’s new arena look dated!

  35. catfaninchattanooga Says:

UT football players arrested for armed robbery. Best part about it is one of them were wearing a UT tshirt. Both players were getting plenty of playing time.

    http://www.govolsxtra.com/news/2009/nov/12/two-football-players-face-a rmed-robbery-charges-tv/

  36. pcslex Says:

From my understanding, Lexington Center would want to turn part of Rupp into a three to five thousand seat performance center and the remainder of the space would be converted in to additional convention space.

  37. macon_volfan Says:

#35-’best’ part about an armed robbery case? That’s just sick. I’ve not seen any confirmation about that shirt story. The absurd part, however, is that they robbed a Pilot station ON CAMPUS.

These 3 (2 of whom had sure NFL careers ahead of them) should be kicked off the team. They’ll be wearing an official Tennessee uniform next year, but it will belong to the prison system. Armed robbery is not a minor offense. Rest assured Kiffin won’t suspend the guys for one half…..

  38. OneAndDone Says:

    35) Nice find, bet Macon doesn’t show up on this post again

  39. TonyDelk00 Says:

I’m wondering what the brown exterior material is. I am guessing it’s probably something that is suppose to mimic a wood basketball floor. I like the design from what I see.

  40. OneAndDone Says:

    opps, i eat crow

  41. macon_volfan Says:

#37–also absurd is that this robbery took place with the 3 in a FREAKING TOYOTA PRIUS!

  42. P.PattersonISwalkingthruthatdoor Says:

    (41) that’s sort of a funny image

  43. macon_volfan Says:

#40-I’m not going to crawl in a hole and try to defend kids that don’t need defending. They broke the law and should be punished. This doesn’t say anything about Kiffin, yet. If he does nothing, or worse, lets them stay on the team (a al Phil) then I’ll be disappointed. Right now it speaks to the poor decision of the 3 utes.

  44. OneAndDone Says:

    43) I kid, just like to give you hell on here.

  45. catfaninchattanooga Says:

    41. Maybe they thought driving a hybrid and not having to stop for gas they could out distance the cops.

  46. macon_volfan Says:

#43-I didn’t think you were being a jerk, at all. Just wanted to explain myself.

  47. macon_volfan Says:

that should have obviously said #44 not #43

#45-irony as defined by Alanis Morissette–the robbery was at a gas station!

  48. SeoulCat Says:

Ditch the brown for something darker (dark blue? dark metallic color?) and you’ve got a pretty nice exterior there.

  49. jman3715 Says:

Looks like the paneling in my 80 year old Aunt’s basement.

  50. jon in jeff Says:

Want to hear something funny? ESPN The Magazine did not rank little brother in their top 65 teams. They called Louisville and said they were sorry, they just forgot Louisville.

My question: Whats more embarassing? Not getting ranked or being forgotten?

Just to pile it on with this clip, Hawkins takes a page out of Pitino’s book, and makes like Rick with Karen. He just undresses his defender.

as long as it seats about 50,000 I’ll be happy…lol

  53. UKfaithful5 Says:

Shoutout to Lane Kiffin and Tennessee, yesterday Kiffin talked about how there haven’t been any player misconduct incidents during his tenure. That was true until today. http://www.tennessean.com/article/20091112/SPORTS0601/91112013/Three+U T+football+players+face+charges+in+robbery

  54. KYStout Says:

They made their getaway in a freaking Prius with a pot grinder in the glove box.

    Outstanding.

  55. P.PattersonISwalkingthruthatdoor Says:

obviously kiffin isn’t paying his players well enough if they’re using pellet guns and Prius-es

  56. Indycatfan Says:

Just a few comparisons before the season starts….fictious of course.
Coach Cal- driving up to visit a recruit in Hardenburg Ky, while traveling 70 miles an hour notices a beautiful butterfly along side the rode having a hard time getting out of it’s cocoon, stops the car and rushes over to gently help it out as delicately as he can. Helps dry it off and watches it fly away with a tear in his eye.
Bruce pearl- is driving to Tullahoma to watch a mud-wrestling match in which his grandmother is odds on bet to win. Tailgates old folks flipping them the bird and throwing four day old half eaten hard boiled eggs at them as he passes at 62 mph in a school zone for the blind. Then stops and teases a seeing eye dog with apiece of steak while driving off and the pup chases said piece of meat with it owner holding on. AND LAUGHS!!!!
Rick Pitino-Drives to “Effingham” Illinois for an inhome visit and going over with his assistant what they plan to do once they get there. Making sure the father of said prospect isn’t home they talk to the both the recruit and mother. While the assistant takes the young man outside to “show what he needs to work on in the driveway” Pitino helps the mother in clearing off the dinner dishes in a neat pile, pulls a bottle of Mogan David out of his briefcase, puts Frank Sinatra on his ipod and has his way with Mama on the breakfast bar. He then gets dressed then proceeds to give mother a half off coupon for a six month subscrition to Planned Parenthood. Then explains why on this day the great American “Homer Simpson” rallied with Sponge Bob because he was from the Big East and Dora was nothing but bad because she was from the southwest and was VERY Un-American.

  57. board@work Says:

    43) whats a ute?

  58. macon_volfan Says:

#56-Pearl’s grandmother was killed in the holocaust.

  59. WalshIsWhat Says:

If there going to make the thing big in orange, they should at least make it a sphere so it resembles a basketball.

  60. macon_volfan Says:

#57-oh, you want me to say YOOOOOOTHS!

    /RIP Fred Gwinn
/filmed about 45 minutes from Macon.

  61. Indycatfan Says:

macon it was just a joke…I meant nothing by it.

  62. The Fake Matt Jones Says:

#57 Thats a line from the movie “My Cousin Vinny”

  63. macon_volfan Says:

    I know #61, no worries! ;-)

  64. TonyDelk00 Says:

Macon that’s the second person you’ve called out today. Chill my friend…chill.

  65. Jonah Hex Says:

I guess im the only one who thinks it looks AWFUL!!!!! Good god that is terrible. Go see the JPJ Arena at UVA- we need something in that design.

  66. macon_volfan Says:

I’ve not called anyone ‘out.’ Not my M-O. The holocaust thing was a joke, albeit a bad one. Hard to figure out tone on the internet.

That things farther up the thread wasn’t a call out either. Sorry if it came across that way. I know that many will try to get shots in towards UT. I feel bad for the guys on the team who are being affected by this; those who ARE doing the right thing and staying out of trouble. Three players, two contributors, are off the team. They let their team and fans down big time.

  67. iamblue08 Says:

Wasn’t Richardson thinking about transferring anyway?

  68. macon_volfan Says:

#67–he was, but seemed to be okay after a good game against Memphis on Saturday. Gave an interview earlier in the week about how is was glad that ‘Coach didn’t give up on [him].’

He, unfortunately, was not so lucky in the long run. He gave up on himself.

  69. Indycatfan Says:

I know Macon, it’sa damn shame for the rest of the team to let down for the acts of three kids. Lets hope the future of our “utes” (which I thought was pretty funny)that the parents aren’t giving them any formulas that come from China…(lead based)

  70. jstipp64 Says:

a few notes guys.. and gals…
dont get too excited about the date, as Rupp is the last thing slated. I would say we have at least 3- 5 more years. Secondly, you know its going to have luxury boxes, throw in chairback seats and at 30000 the views are horrible. Personally im for pushin more towards the 35-40000 mark..(syracuse is currently at 33000) have a few bad seats (at least people get to see the game) make it the largest place for basketball.. we are the king.. we need to play in a palace!!

  71. bluemadness Says:

Rupp is going to be a big ass parking garage for the new arena across the street. They want to put the luxury suites on the floor and then do the seating up from there. They are taking the top of the stadium and making it one big bowl a putting suites all the around between the first and second level.

  72. UKscammer-aka MM Says:

    False alarm

Today I was informed that ISG, our partner in the proposed new arena in Lexington, had highlighted the project on its website complete with a conceptual rendering of the proposed new arena and a construction timeline. This information was very premature and in this case, inaccurate. The images, which should not have been posted on their website, are in the process of being removed.

The image of the proposed new arena in Lexington was one of several conceptual drawings submitted in our response to the UK RFP. The designs have not been developed, discussed or agreed upon with either the Lexington Center Corporation or the University of Kentucky. The posting on the website was misleading in that it gave the impression that the new arena would look like the rendering they chose to post.

The timetable mentioned on the website was also inaccurate. The website said construction will begin in January 2010. This is false. The financial feasibility study is currently in progress and thus, the study will not be available for review until early 2010. At that time, UK and LCC will determine whether or not to proceed with the projects that include a new downtown arena, renovations at Commonwealth Stadium and a new UK baseball stadium.

Until that decision is made, final drawings will not be developed. After the decision is made, assuming it is a decision to proceed with the projects, there will be several months before the bonds are sold to finance these projects. As a result, no construction can begin until all necessary approvals are secured and the financing is finalized.

I apologize for any inconvenience this has caused anyone.

Any announcements about these potential projections will come from Lexington Center Corporation or the University of Kentucky.
