————————-

Well, now that we have that exciting teaser out of the way, let’sget this hump day party rolling and just jump right into the Wednesday News and Views.  Today isn’t just any old Wednesday, though, in case you couldn’t tell by the calendar ad.  After all, we don’t just bust that baby out on any old day.  Nope, this Wednesday is full of optimism and dreams of the future for college basketball programs all across the country as November 11 signals the start of the fall signing period.  For the Cats, Stacey Poole, Jr. will likely be the only player putting a promise in ink as nearly all of the top prospects they’re targeting will wait until the spring.  According to Evan Daniels, Brandon Knight, Terrence Jones, CJ Leslie, Doron Lamb and Josh Selby will all hold out unitl the spring to sign their National Letter of Intent.  So, with that in mind, I wouldn’t expect a lot of excitment out of this signing period, which is a product of targeting so many top players.  No offense intended to Stacey Poole, of course.  He just has his head on straight.

Now, thanks to a 90-minute Sons of Anarchy, it’s ridiculously late for me.  We’ll make these notes quick (for real this time) on a very slow non-practice day for the basketball team….

 - Tonight was the first lottery of the basketball season and, according to our man on the scene, some of the UK folks said it was the largest crowd ever for a lottery at over 6,500 people.  This number is now being submitted to Guiness to confirm that it is a record.  In the meantime, we’ll count it.

 - One of my favorite sites on the internet is The Big Lead.  It’s an easy read and they always have good stuff.  Plus, they used to hook us up when we were on WildcatBlitz.  On Tuesday, the guys there interviewed Dick Vitale, who defended John Calipari quite strongly when asked about his vacated wins.  Vitale says it might be a go-to complaint for Calipari haters, but none of the issues deal with the coach.  Also, Vitale denies any Duke or UNC bias.  Pretty good interview.

 - As our Cats prepare for the might Morehead State Eagles without John Wall, our opponents will also likely be entering the game a little undermanned.  Maze Stallworth will be a game time decision for Morehead after suffering a concussion last week in an exhibition against Cedarville.  The senior averaged 12 points a game for the Eagles last year.

 - Down in Fayetteville, the wheels continued to fall off the wagon for one of Kentucky’s most beloved former players.  John Pelphrey suspended five players on Tuesday for various rules violations, including the Hogs’ best player, Courtney Fortson, for an indefinite amount of time.  The suspensions mean that Arkansas will enter their season opener with only nine active players….and one of them a former member of the golf team.  For a coach who may have the hottest seat in the conference, you have to applaud him still sticking to his principles despite his own job security being in question.  You also have to wonder if this might serve as a nail in the coffin.

 - On the football front, Rich Brooks said that Mike Hartline’s status is still uncertain for Saturday’s game.  Hartline did practice Tuesday with a brace on his knee and looked “a little rusty” according to the coach.  However, they plan to give him another go on Wednesday, depending on how his knee responds.  With a winnable game against Vandy and two games where they’ll be underdogs left, you’d have to wonder what the value of playing Hartline is.  Does a rusty Hartline give you a better chance to win against Vandy?  I doubt it.  It seems like the logical decision would be to let Morgan Newton take the lumps and have the opportunity to continue his growth.

 - The football team did get some positive news on the injury front, though, as Trevard Lindley returned to practice after suffering another ankle injury.  Brooks said he’s not 100% yet, but made it through most of practice.  For a guy who came back when he was guaranteed to be a first day NFL pick, you want to see him get over this hump and get on the field.  Randall Cobb and Derrick Locke both practiced as well.  The only position of concern remains tight end where Ross Bogue did not practice Tuesday an TC Drake remains out.

 - A note I don’t think we’ve posted yet here came from ESPN SEC blogger Chris Low on Monday when he said that UK defensive coordinator Steve Brown could be in the running for the WKU head coaching job.  It’s tough to say how much truth there is to the rumors, but it’s safe to say that the public worrying of Brown leaving would likely pale in comparison to the concern when Randy Sanders interviewed for the Tennessee-Chatanooga job two years ago.  The world’s biggest believer in man-to-man coverage has certainly helped develop UK’s defense over the past few years, but he remains a subject of criticism from UK fans.

 - And speaking of The Worldwide Leader, they got a proper butt-kicking on iTunes podcast from KSR on Tuesday.  In case you haven’t heard, the podcast featuring the KSR guys and Keenan Burton, Kenny Walker and Woo climbed to the #3 spot in the sports podcast rankings, passing Mike and Mike, Around the Horn and Tony Kornheiser.  We even passed former SportsCenter face man Dan Patrick.  The only word to really describe this is “ridiculous” and serves as the latest “wow, this thing has gotten more support than we’ve ever dreamed” for everyone here.  Here is a picture of the standings….just in case someone who has no idea what he’s talking about says it isn’t true.

 - While we’re talking about iTunes, let’s be honest.  We look awfully stupid without a cool logo next to our name.  If you want to design a logo for the KSR Podcast on iTunes, have at it.  Send it to matt.jones@kentuckysportsradio.com and it could be chosen as the official KSR logo.  We will pay you in admiration.

That’s it for now.  I’m sure we’ll have some stuff later.  Probably right around one post every hour.  See you in a few…

  12. goukcatsgo Says:

A few things. A. When is Matt going to respond to the “frosted one’s” accusation that he was fired at coachcal.com… He looks foolish for not doing so. Especially when you consider that we haven’t seen anything on coachcal.com from jones since the announcement.
    B. When is the big political announcement coming?
    C. When is the big national story about cal coming out?

  17. Big Blue KY Says:

    16) Why are you trying to start sh*t?

  18. BUWildcat10 Says:

12 A agreed. Its not like anyone would really care if he did get fired.

  19. goukcatsgo Says:

17)Why is asking questions considered “starting shit”? Frankly, I want jones to make maggard look like a fool and prove him wrong, but for some reason Matt refuses to address the rumor that maggard started. He has also not followed up on the “big national story” that he said was coming out. He would increase his credibility if he would address those issues.

  20. Matt Jones Says:

Go to Coachcal.com’s website if you care

  21. blairato Says:

Matt just posted another article. Now move on with the Maggard crap.

  22. catlanta91 Says:

Beisner, that was a beautiful post.

  23. Big Blue KY Says:

  24. KSR Spy Says:

  29. goukcatsgo Says:

Again guys. You have to understand my relationship or lack thereof to understand why I wanted jones to respond to maggard. I make it a sport to prove Maggard wrong… The guy is a TOOOLLLL…

Good work Matt. Still waiting on the big political annoucnemnt!! Make it big!

  30. goukcatsgo Says:

  32. newsman Says:

I wouldn’t gloat if I were you guys….. Jones won’t be writing at Coach Cal in the near future.

  33. BUWildcat10 Says:

  34. goukcatsgo Says:

#31- Wishful thinking on the part of the maggardites/maggard’s minions…
