DeCourcy gets right what the AP couldn’t

by @ 5:16 pm. Filed under Blue Blooded Opinions

It’s no secret around here that we like The Sporting News‘ Mike DeCourcy. And if it was a secret, well I just screwed that up by telling you jokers, didn’t I? Regardless, DeCourcy has been a friend of the site, even taking time out of his busy schedule as TSN’s senior basketball writer to let one of our blogger contestants interview him as part of the contest. Well, not only is he a heck of a nice guy, he just might be the smartest sportswriter in the world. He posted his take on the AP poll that was released today, and had a couple of tidbits that might be interesting to those of the Big Blue persuasion:

No. 4, really? The voters were willing to buy the idea that one great freshman could turn one sub-.500 team (Georgia Tech) into a squad worthy of a ranking. But did not believe four great freshmen could turn an NIT team (Kentucky) into the nation’s second-best. OK.

Ranked, and shouldn’t be: No. 19 Louisville. Rick Pitino is one of the great basketball coaches of all time, but he didn’t turn Edgar Sosa into a significant player in three prior years. Why should we believe that’ll suddenly happen? The Cards not only lost their top two scorers and rebounders, NBA first-rounders Terrence Williams and Earl Clark, but also veteran point guard Andre McGee. If this doesn’t become a tough transition year, Pitino’s even better than I thought.

So, in sum: Kentucky is awesome, Louisville is garbage and unless Rick Pitino finds a glassy-eyed blonde magic lamp to rub on a few times, Edgar Sosa will continue to be perpetually insignificant. I have but one question, though. Does DeCourcy teach some classes we can send Pat Forde to?

Kentucky will prove they are better than UNC and other teams when the season gets going. And UofL will eventually drop out of the top 25 and I am positive UK will make them look like a high school team. Who cares what the polls say right now because pretty soon UK will proving where they deserve to be with their actions.

My question is, how many weeks will it take for us to get to #1?

Does Tipton have a story our yet that talks about how PPat’s truck is black as “Coal”?

Maybe it’s because the voters realize that this Calipari team won’t be able to scrimmage through a weak C-USA all winter.

Whomever this is, they are an idiot. Memphis never had this type of talent from top to bottom. God I CANNOT WAIT for the season to start so all these trash talkers have to shut their mouth.

The LHL is issuing an apology to P-Pat’s mother tommorrow. Tipton’s bosses WILL respond to a large number of complaints called in. Keep it up BBN (859) 231-3100 Let em’ know how offended you are at Tipton’s columns.

The only thing I’m asking is, does that freshman at GTech have a big S across his chest, and wear a Cape? Most likely not, but we do! As a matter of fact I think we have the whole damn Justice League

  7. JMBlue Says:

I heard Cowlishaw (sp?) on Around the Horn saying that UK shouldn’t be ranked this high because the season will be vacated anyway with Cal here. Douchebaggery at its best (or worst).

  8. Fear54 Says:

my favorite quote from one of the million articles on UK in past few months- “In Kentucky, you can’t love your grandmother more than basketball,” said Van Florence, the 30-year president of the Committee of 101, the UK booster organization. “And if you did, your grandmother would tell you you’re stupid.” So true…We’re Back Baby!!!!

  9. IcemanG2 Says:

So many haters … UK needs to do its talking on the court. Period. And we need to hang that f*ckin’ banner without any follow-up from the NCAA … ! Who’s with me!?

  10. UKfaithful5 Says:

Did anybody catch Around the Horn where Tim Callashaw said UK was overrated because they were an NIT team last year and that it didn’t matter because they would have to vacate any of their wins. I know this show is oppinionated, but if you are going to bring up college basketball topics, have journalists that actually know what they are talking about.

2- In 96 we started #1 and after losing to Cal’s Umass team dropped to #2 and stayed there till the final poll. That number did not matter at all. As long as we stay top 5 and get one of those top seeds we’re good to go. Having said that I sure wouldn’t mind to know whats it like to be #1 again. Been a long while.

  12. SagaciousMind Says:

It amazes how Coach Cal has never been convicted of any wrong doing, but yet he’s a cheater. And people want to bring up last year’s team. 1st, that team could have been a lot better but they gave up on Billy G because they did not like him…period. It had nothin to do with their talent, skills, or abilities. 2nd, that was last years team with players like Porter, Galloway, and Stewart being replaced with the likes of Wall, Dodson, Cousins and Orton. I will be SO glad when the season starts and UK runs over everyone on the court. ESPN is a joke anyway.
