    FIRST!!!!!!!!

  2. veeper Says:

    COAL COAL COAL

  3. veeper Says:

Ya gotta admit - it’s better than WILDCAT KOTEX LODGE.

  4. Arms of Delk Legs of McCarty Says:

I missed my chance to get a coal first. Kdawg got it.

  5. Cawood2Cal Says:

Also in a close 11-9 vote the Board decided to change the mascot to a Black Cat — Ladies and Gentlemen, The Kentucky BlackCats sponsored by Coal.

  6. Mr. Jack Hammer Says:

The KY Jelly Wildcat Lodge! I’m sure it’s used there more than coal!

  7. HoratioCane Says:

Am I the only one that doesn’t think it’s a big deal? I guarantee you that only a small, small fraction of UK fans knew the lodge was named after Joe B Hall. If it helps recruiting and keeps us on a championship level every year, what difference does it make what the thing is called? I’m sure Cal will find another way to honor Joe B.

  8. veeper Says:

FLASH — KENTUCKY SPORTS RADIO has been offerred an unknown amount of money for commercial branding. Effective November 1st Kentucky Sports Radio - will be newly named —- TROJAN CONDOM’S MATT JONES SPORTS!

  9. demoCrAT Says:

The wave of the future. If we get a new arena, we will face the same controversies.

My guess would be LexMark Arena with the knickname of “the Keight.”

  10. Coal Purnell here Says:

This is a really Coal idea….Any news on Doron Lamb?

  11. Mr. Jack Hammer Says:

7: Unlike our last coach, Cal will honor Joe B. by being kind to him!

  12. veeper Says:

Ya just gotta know that they are planning on having a coal burning stove inside the lodge to warm em up.

  13. Mr. Jack Hammer Says:

    10: Well played!

  14. MIDDAY Says:

    COAL DEY!

  15. JMBlue Says:

8- You never know, Matt may actually like that name. It may be big (no pun intended) with the ladies.

  16. Cawood2Cal Says:

This is what happens when money and ignorance meets.

  17. veeper Says:

I wonder if MSNBC will give some time now to the branding of the name - MicroSoft National Broadcasting Company?

  18. jorts4life Says:

This weekend’s blackout jerseys brought to you by friends of Joe Craft at Coalmonwealth Stadium.

  19. nextyearwillbebetter Says:

No big deal at all…..Most call it the wildcat lodge, not the Joe B. Hall wildcat lodge…….it will still be commonly referred to as the wildcat lodge

  20. veeper Says:

cawood, who was ignorant in the deal? UK - who got 7 million bucks for a lodge - or the coal company who makes that much profit?

  21. demoCrAT Says:

The Universuty would have been crazy to pass up $7M

  22. Secretariat Says:

As if we don’t already get enough backwoods-hillbilly jokes. Great. Just frickin’ great.

  23. slappy Says:

It’s just a place where they sleep and get with chicks anyway… What are they supposed to do, turn down a $7,000,000 donation because they don’t like the name? Now, if we build a new arena and they start slapping corporate names on it I don’t think that’ll go over nearly as well.

Is this why Calipari has been telling the “we go down together…….. (dramatic pause)………. and we go up together……… (another pause to let the message sink in)” story hundreds of times over the last month? If so, touche’, but that would explain it.

  24. MIDDAY Says:

From now on, KSR’ers will have to use the word coal like the smurfs used the word smurphy or like Snoop Dog uses izzle.

  25. nextyearwillbebetter Says:

    17……well played indeed

  26. Dennis Says:

Its really a win, win. The new building will be very “Green”, players/recruits will LOVE it, and the donors get the only thing they were asking for. There’s something there for all sides to enjoy.

  27. Big John Says:

So does this open the door for UK to allow the coal companies to begin mining in the Robinson Forrest?

  28. demoCrAT Says:

At least our BBall court isnt named after the head womens basketball coach. (The Summit!)

  29. UkIbleedblue Says:

That’s why there is a blackout Sat. Night at Commonwealth Stadium to celebrate Wildcat Coal Lodge . Get It.

  30. hooperstar54 Says:

ladies and gentlemen, introducing your university of kentucky fighting wildcoals, john coalall, eric bledcoal, darius millcoal, decoalus coalins, and patrick coalatterson. special thanks to coal for sponsering our new all coal basketball team. i guess when our team isnt shooting so hot some nights, we can just turn up the coal in our new coal heated arena and they’ll start hitting shots. also, this just in, jodie meeks would like to thank coal for inspiring his hot shooting throughout his 54 point performance.

  31. PitiNO says Lego My Prego Says:

In all honesty, if you’re a recruit, would you have a problem staying in a brand new, technology filled dorm because it had coal in the name? No, you’d bring each girl home from the bar to your brand new movie theater and hot tub. If he wants to spend 7 million dollars to help attract more recruits then he should be able to name it whatever the hell he wants.

  32. demoCrAT Says:

I would have named my kid “Coal” for half that much $$

  33. veeper Says:

U of L is gonna be totally pissed now. Everyone knows that coal is the Kentucky state mineral — and now UK has gone and hijacked it. LOL gotta love it.

  34. gorbe ye abi Says:

I agree. Not that big a deal. But whatever…

  35. Cawood2Cal Says:

They can build it out of large blocks of coal. Outside the landscaping could include coal mulch instead of rocks or bark. And a water feature filled with sulfur runoff. The players can bathe in arsenic, mercury, and other heavy metals.

  36. ukisgr8 Says:

Smarter heads prevailed. To pass up $7 million just because it had our states greatest resources name in it would have been stupid, stupid, stupid. Regardless, the old one is officially called the Joe B Hall Wildcat Lodge but until this discussion started, 95% of you had no clue the official name of the building. The new Building will be called the same thing the old building is, Wildcat Lodge

  37. BillC Says:

I know this decision will make plenty of people happy, based on the comments in the other thread, but I am afraid that this decision will cost us in the long run. There will be young men who don’t want to live in a place called the “Coal Lodge” or whatever the name will become knonwn as, either because they have enviromental leanings (think the next Bill Walton) or see an adverse racial connotation even where none is intended.

Coal has of course been an economic driver in Kentucky and provides and will continue to provide jobs and energy for decades to come, but it is has undeniable negative associations as well.

  38. Secretariat Says:

Still, you’d think that Calipari (being the PR/marketing genius that he is) would realize that this plays negatively against the program on a nationwide scale. Kentuckians are too close to the industry to realize what a “dirty” (no pun intended) word coal is to the rest of the country. It is roughly the equivalent of calling it “Wildcat Oil Lodge”. This will not play well nationwide-just makes Kentucky look rooted in the past instead of innovating for the future.

  39. veeper Says:

Flash, due to the dutch ancestry of one of the coal barons - it can now officially be announced that the Wildcat Coal Lodge will be spelled in Dutch on the outside. It will read as follow:

    de onbetrouwbare steenkool brengt onder

  40. catfaninchattanooga Says:

I just can’t imagine a 7 million dollar dorm for 13 players??????? They should have just gave the guys the house that UK bought off of Gillispie. Are they going to build the beds out of gold? For 13 players, thats roughly $467,000 being spent per player. I can hear it now…if you decide to come to UK you will be living in your 7 million dollar dorm. A HUGE recruiting tool.

  41. veeper Says:

37c — are you serious - racial connotation?? geeez, get a life.

  42. univky Says:

Time for MSNBC to get elitist about some other issue. I know, maybe they should go after the Purdue BOILERMAKERS….To arms! To arms!

  43. fearnloathing20 Says:

This sucks really bad. It makes the State look like a bunch of backwards ass conservatives…well i guess there is just no hiding from the truth. Our reliance on Coal is completely unsustainable and that is all I will say about that because its a F’in fact.

On a positive note we should have no trouble getting these guys to sponsor some “coal black” uniforms right?

  44. veeper Says:

catfaninchattnooga — it also houses non-athlete students.

  45. veeper Says:

fearnloathing — actually coal is quite sustainable. Check your facts.

  46. catfaninchattanooga Says:

    44. does the current one house non-athlete students?

  47. minton Says:

That’s a TERRIBLE NAME!!!! First of all, say it our loud. It sounds like you are trying to say COLLAGE. It’s not a painting. Wildcat Collage. Our players live in a piece of freakin’ kindergarden artwork.

  48. fearnloathing20 Says:

We will lose some players over this. Some young people feel VERY strongly about our planet and would simply eliminate UK from contention based on seeing this on a visit. I know it seems silly, but some us yonguns are idealistic and believe that living in a place named after and paid for by something that is literally slowly killing us is unethical and unacceptable.

  49. veeper Says:

46 - yes - it was done years ago due to a concern over discrimination, etc.

  50. Cawood2Cal Says:

In an obscure stipulation, cheerleaders are now required to perform in coal miner’s garb, complete with carbide lamps on their minin hat.

  51. veeper Says:

48 — you are over reacting — we haven’t lost anything from using the name Rupp arena. And yes, I can come up with several jokes, puns, etc on the name rupp.

  52. PitiNO says Lego My Prego Says:

To say that is a racial connotation is ridiculous. If that’s the csse, then Coach K floor fits the bill. Paul Brown staduim must be racist too. If you don’t like the name, then you put up the 7 mill and you can name it whatever you like.

  53. fearnloathing20 Says:

45 your a moron. Coal is not sustainable. You have lost your mind. Anytime you take something out of the earth that takes millions of years to get there that is the very definition of unsustainable. I suppose reliance on oil, natural gas is also sustainable while solar, wind, and thermal are not. You people make me sick.

  54. veeper Says:

fearnloathing - you might want to learn abit about CCS technology.

  55. veeper Says:

fearnloathing - based on your premise - there is only so much oxygen - therefore we need to give up and - die. No thanks.

  56. UKSoCalCampus Says:

44- Non-athlete students that are picked by the basketball players because NCAA won’t let schools have athlete-only dorms.

My main problem with the name is that it’s a slippery slope from the Coal Lodge to the Gatewood Galbraith for Governor School of Political Science.

  57. Cawood2Cal Says:

How does “Coal Palace” sponsored by Massey Energy Company sound for a new arena?

  58. veeper Says:

I think fearnloathing has anger issues.

  59. veeper Says:

56, call it the future — branding is everywhere - and soon it will be near a store near you.

  60. univky Says:

#48….lose recruits over this….really? You need to write for the Jay Leno show and save his ratings.

  61. Secretariat Says:

Coal? Sustainable? Have you been listening to the coal companies again? Have you not noticed that every new “green” building is striving to be self-sustaining energy wise and they are AVOIDING using coal (or any other fossil fuel) in new energy plants. Coal is a depletable resource (ie-not sustainable) and even if it wasn’t, it is unsustainable as a viable economic option in the long term. Its easy to defend the name when you are in Kentucky with a bunch of coal mining families. The rest of us around the country are gonna get all sorts of hell over this.

  62. fearnloathing20 Says:

Veeper. You are what is wrong with this country. There is no such thing as clean coal. Its freaking coal. Have you ever been to West Virginia or Eastern Ky? Just because a corporation that is led by old men who have billions at stake tell you something exists (clean coal) doesnt mean you should believe them. Jesus we are doomed because of people like you. Clean Coal…what a stupid thing t even say.

  63. veeper Says:

fearnloathing - careful your blood pressure is rising. My advice - educate yourself - then come back. You have alot to learn.

  64. fearnloathing20 Says:

Yes i do have anger issues when it comes to MY planet and MY future there is nothing I would not say or do to protect it from people with a.) tiny brains b.) uncontrollable greed

Im gonna give you the benefit of the doubt and put you in area a.

  65. smiddy911 Says:

Relax… this is not going to be the name of it.

It will be named Joe B Hall Coal Lodge.

  66. Cawood2Cal Says:

What if PETA outbids Coal by putting up $8 million tomorrow to name it “PETA loves Wildcats Lodge” — Does the board go for it?

  67. PitiNO says Lego My Prego Says:

Clean, dirty, sustainging, who cares? 7 million dollar recruiting tool. Heart disease killis millions of people each year but I bet everyone here eats there. Hypocrasy has an ugly stench.

  68. UKSoCalCampus Says:

54- CCS does nothing to increase the amount of coal or the power produced by it, just cuts down on the amount of CO2 released, so it has absolutely nothing to do with what 53 was saying.

  69. LeBowlingAlley Says:

    Wildcat Lifestyles Lodge

  70. veeper Says:

Personally - I just enjoy watching fearnloathing - puff up and burst. LOL

  71. The New(est) Dispensation of Kentucky’s Domain of Greed, Power, and Corruption « The Well Wrought Urn Says:

  72. catfaninchattanooga Says:

    Wildcats ShamWow Lodge

  73. catcrawler Says:

In the end players will choose a school based on Coaches, facilities, fans, and education.

  74. BillC Says:

Veeper and #52, read my comment again. I’m not saying I think there is a racial connotation, but I think it likely that one can be made, particularly by those recruiting against us for African-American players. (”You go there, you have to live in the Coal house…”) I think the University has worked hard to overcome a highly unfair image on racial matters. Who knows, we may well have lost a recruit or two over the years because of all the negative and misguided publicity about Coach Rupp’s alleged views and his name on the arena. I hope I’m wrong about this part of my comment, but I don’t think it farfetched.

The name will certainly not make recruiting any easier.

  75. Secretariat Says:

If you are over 30 and one of the people saying it WON’T affect recruiting, then accept the fact that you are out of touch with today’s youth and on your way to becoming a blue hair. Fact is, this is a BIG deal with kids these days and denying it doesn’t make it not true. As a guy in my 20s, it makes me sick to think that we are putting coal in the center of our program. Our environment is important to us, even if those of you in our parent’s generation don’t like it.

  76. fearnloathing20 Says:

thanks 68 it just pisses me off when these old people think they know what they are talking about. You need to forget some of the BS you have been taught by our biased media and flawed education system. Get a JD and a masters degree then come talk to me bout “learning” things.

  77. veeper Says:

    64 — I am wondering - who made earth - YOUR PLANET?

hmmmmm — calipari has explaining to do.

  78. HackRichards Says:

GOOD! Now all you Liberals eat our Coal Dust!

  79. UKSoCalCampus Says:

59- When you’re talking about an institution of learning and research, there’s a little more to be lost than names. Corporations funding “independent” research institutions has much deeper ramifications than names.

  80. catfaninchattanooga Says:

China just made a bid…Wildcats Fortune Cookie Lodge

  81. Cawood2Cal Says:

Seems to me this is a good time for “Paradise” by John Prine: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XyPTIOJuWws

  82. veeper Says:

FYI — British Petroleum, in its annual report 2007, estimated at 2006 end, there were 909,064 million tons of proven coal reserves worldwide, or 147 years reserves-to-production ratio. This figure only includes reserves classified as “proven”; exploration drilling programs by mining companies, particularly in under-explored areas, are continually providing new reserves. In many cases, companies are aware of coal deposits that have not been sufficiently drilled to qualify as “proven”. However, some nations haven’t updated their information and assume reserves remain at the same levels even with withdrawals.
    US coal regions

Of the three fossil fuels coal has the most widely distributed reserves; coal is mined in over 100 countries, and on all continents except Antarctica. The largest reserves are found in the USA, Russia, Australia, China, India and South Africa.

  83. univky Says:

#73—and of course the name of the lodge they live in…

  84. catfaninchattanooga Says:

After signing his first NBA contract, Eric Bledsoe donates enough to rename it….Wildcats Get Sh*t Right Lodge

  85. veeper Says:

Ice Cream Poop Lodge - has a great ring to it - doesn’t it?

  86. bosshogg24 Says:

43, the conservatives are the in people, the forward group, get in or be left behind!

  87. veeper Says:

    I hope fearnloathing’s head didn’t explode??

  88. Dennis Says:

#78 I’m GLAD your party is POWERLESS so that people like yourself have NO voice in gov’t.

  89. veeper Says:

enough political commentary — let’s all come together and make fun of fearnloathing. Perhaps we should sing Kumbaya?

  90. UKSoCalCampus Says:

86- What? The utopian era of conservative politics was the 1920s and we all saw how that ended.

  91. JPhill Says:

Why cave to these people. They just renovated the Wildcat Lodge not too long ago.

  92. PitiNO says Lego My Prego Says:

“You don’t wanna go to UK, they like coal.”
“You don’t wanna live in Kentucky, they use coal.”
“You don’t wanna live near the mountains, they use coal.”
“You don’t wanna live in America, they use coal.”
“You don’t wanna live in Asia, Europe, South Africa or South America, they use coal.”
    Where does it end?

  93. LeBowlingAlley Says:

I like that my post referencing a condom company was the 69th post.

  94. Secretariat Says:

Veeper- you’re missing the point. We (ie-the next generation) don’t want “cleaner” fossil fuels or “better” fossil fuels or access to more reserves of fossil fuels. Fossil fuels need to be eliminated as a source of energy altogether…and it looks as if we’ll be able to do so in the next 30 years or so if people will stop championing the old way of doing things. As you can see, you’ve quickly become the “bad guy” amongst the younger posters in this thread by defending coal. The same will happen with UK and recruits.

  95. asdfasdf Says:

Coal is not good for the world anymore, I dont care how many dollars can come from it. Mountaintop Removal movement

  96. veeper Says:

Secretariat - you’re missing the point - I am making fun of it –all.

  97. veeper Says:

Secretariat - me? a bad guy amounst younger posters — gee thanks — I wear that badge with honor. Also, when power rates quadtriple - give me your address so you can pay. LOL

  98. UKSoCalCampus Says:

I hope the board of trustees isn’t bothered when the academic community stops taking research from the mining engineering department seriously.

  99. JPhill Says:

None the less 96, 94 is still right.

  100. PitiNO says Lego My Prego Says:

UK recruits don’t care about coal. These kids are born and bread for basketball. If coal is the reason you decide not to come to the greatest basketball mecca in the world, then you should read Larry Johnson’s twitter, where you have been referenced.

  101. veeper Says:

btw, coal is neither good nor bad. What it is currently is — necessary. Not to negate improvements for the future. But until then. You should embrace it. Now, all together Kumbaya my friend Kumbaya…………..

  102. veeper Says:

This coal issue in the name is really a plot instigated by Jerry Tipton.

  103. catcrawler Says:

#83 - Some may, some may not. That’s certainly a gamble that the board is willing to take. While I don’t agree with the VERY GENERIC name “Wildcat Coal Lodge”, I do believe that Coach Cal will have no problem selling it to recruits. Selling it to the rest of the world may not be as easy.

  104. ukisgr8 Says:

#94, the funny thing is that I absolutely, 100% agree with you but unless there is a 50 year requirement in the donation papers to use coal as heat, I don’t understand turning down $7 million, which is what you are doing if you deny using the word “coal” in the name. Just saying the 4 letters themselves don’t put anymore fossil fuels in the air but using these computers do. In fact, just being on here is powered by coal. How ironic is that?

  105. veeper Says:

And now my last comment on coal — if you don’t have a viable option for coal - then don’t speak. And when I say viable I also mean commiserate in price.

  106. catfaninchattanooga Says:

Who cares what the world thinks…they use coal too.

  107. UK4LIFE247 Says:

Guess no one here cares about tradition and only cares about money!

  108. LeBowlingAlley Says:

veeper may have proved his idiocy more than anybody i’ve seen on this board.

  109. bosshogg24 Says:

Conservatives out number liberals 2 to 1 in the latest poll, we are coming for you, starting with the next election in about 10 days. Watch New Jersey and Virginia, you will see!
Plus, there are no Al Gores in Kentucky.

  110. Brent S. Says:

Sooner or later the coal money to UK is going to dry up, I say we get all the funds we can while they still have enough to donate!

  111. belgium Says:

    Lessee-
-The Colts play in Lucas Oil Stadium, and that seems to be not a big deal. However:
-147 years is not eternity, so coal is indeed not sustainable.
-I am sure Coach Cal loves the name of the lodge- he has made mention in several interviews how his coal-mining grandfather died in his forties.
    Everybody sing!
“Then the coal company came with the world’s largest shovel
And they tortured the timber and stripped all the land
Well, they dug for their coal till the land was forsaken
Then they wrote it all down as the progress of man.”

  112. catfaninchattanooga Says:

over/under 10 people will chain themselves to the trees in front of the new location to prevent construction…

  113. veeper Says:

#108 — ouch now that hurt — geez I quit namecalling in the third grade

  114. JPhill Says:

“They dug for their coal til the land was forsaken and they wrote it all down as the progress of man”

  115. catfaninchattanooga Says:

I can hear Pitino now….”How can you question me on my affairs when we have UK naming their dorms after coal.”

  116. hooperstar54 Says:

94, i dont like the name either, but uk will never b the “bad guy” to recruits as long as calipari is the coach. im probably one of the younger posters on this site, and i agree tht its a stupid name, but it wouldnt stop me from going to a school. honestly, if you ask john wall whether he wouldve came to uk if the lodge was already named wildcat coal lodge, he would probably tell you yea and tht he didnt care about the name.

  117. LeBowlingAlley Says:

113 - you must have stopped learning in the 3rd grade too, because i didn’t call you anything

  118. veeper Says:

tree huggers — better than jay leno!

  119. UKSoCalCampus Says:

109- Conservatives outnumbered liberals about 2:1 when the democrats took the majority in congress in ‘06 and it was only a little closer in ‘08 when Obama was elected by a rather substantial margin. What’s your point?

  120. JPhill Says:

Dang 111. beat me to it…I thought that only happened with “FIRST”!!!!!

  121. LeBowlingAlley Says:

119 - i thought you stopped namecalling in the 3rd grade?

  122. veeper Says:

118 — “his idiocy” hmmmmmmm — me thinks someone needs to learn the Kings English.

  123. veeper Says:

    119. that was a compliment - lol

  124. Cawood2Cal Says:

The point of contention is not as much naming Wildcat Lodge after coal as it is binding Kentucky Basketball in any shape or form to an industry.

It cheapens something sacred. It would be similar to have your Baptist Church being sponsored by KFC. This has never happened — branding of UK Basketball by an industry. I’m afraid this sets a precident, one that disrespects the fan’s relationship with the team. Coal is taking advantage of the love of Kentucky Basketball, and it stinks worse the more I think about it.

  125. EuclidOnFire Says:

    Somewhere Silas House is crying.

  126. ukisgr8 Says:

#107, tradition? Before our gym was called Rupp, it was Memorial so where is tradition when it was changed? And Wildcat Lodge is still Wildcat Lodge. Joe B Hall’s name wasn’t on it before the current one was built, where is the tradition there? Tradition is in the team not buildings or name of buildings for goodness sake

  127. UK4LIFE247 Says:

Do you all not care about our tradition that made us this excellent basketball school we are?

  128. LeBowlingAlley Says:

123 - let’s take you back to third grade where you would learn that the phrase “proving your idiocy” is describing an action. if I said “proved you are an idiot” (which btw has a different intrinsic meaning), that would have been namecalling.

  129. bosshogg24 Says:

Liberal numbers have dropped badly since Obama was elected to only 20% who now call themselves liberal. New poll this week.

  130. Big John Says:

I work in a job associated with the coal industry. To say that it is sustainable is a joke. Most coal seams have been mined out, and most of the remaining coal so difficult to get to that it isn’t proffitable to mine. Some coal companies have even resorted to digging through old hollow fills for coal. I’m not saying that the coal will run out tomorrow, but to think it is going to still be a booming buisness in 15 years is a pipe dream no matter what technologies come along.

  131. Dennis Says:

#109 You seem very confident in a party that ONLY 20% of Americans identify themselves with. Just Sayin

  132. JPhill Says:

The Kentucky Wildcats road to the 2010 National Championship sponsored by Friends of Coal for clean coal energy!

  133. LeBowlingAlley Says:

130 - is that what fox news tells you?

  134. ukisgr8 Says:

#125, dude, it’s a house for students, get over yourself already, Jesus. And who knows, when a new Arena is built, it may be called KFC Arena, like Papa Johns Arena, Fed Ex Field, and 99% of other arena and fields being named after the largest donor.

  135. CHECKSPOOLROOM22 Says:

DO YOU THINK THAT COACH CAL KNEW ABOUT THE 7 MILLION DONATION BEFORE HE VISTED THE COAL MINE (THAT HE WENT UNDER GROUND) OR AFTER THE VIST ?? ANYWAY IT WAS NICE FOR HIM TO GO THERE AND IM GLAD THIS GOT PASSED.

  136. catcrawler Says:

#114 Other forms of energy have been prevented from developing since the steam engine was in the automobile. That being said, burning anything isn’t the best way to harness it’s “carbon” energy. Burning things is a very primitive way of creating energy and humanity must find a more efficient way.
WE WERE ON THAT PATH UNTIL WWI. THAT’S WHEN OIL WAS DISCOVERED IN SAUDI ARABIA AND ENGLAND/FRANCE BROKE A PROMISE TO THEM. But hey, the rest is history.

  137. bosshogg24 Says:

Dennis you have your numbers messed up , its 40% conservative, 20% liberal in the lastest poll!

  138. ih8winning Says:

Well, I’ve got an idea. I think everyone who hates coal should boycott the basketball team if you’re so passionate about your future, the country, and blah blah blah. I will even take the tickets off of your hands from you free of charge. So, if you love your country, give me your tickets.

  139. univky Says:

Young people….most have not started their careers (in other words…have not started to pay ever-increasing taxes to the govt so corrupt politicians can spend it anyway they please),

Have not yet started a family (so they don’t have to ask…you’re teaching my child what?)

Are fine with the liberals and Obama’s secretive health care plan..because socialized medicine has worked so well everywhere else..

Are buying the lie of global warming…hence the hatred of coal, gas, etc…Ever wonder why the ice age ended????? I bet it’s because of all the cars we were driving thousands of years ago….Or maybe it’s because the earth goes in natural warming and cooling cycles…..

  140. Dennis Says:

#138 Jackass listen CAREFULLY 20% of Americans identify themselves as Republicans. There are many Conservative Dems, so just because people are Conservative doesn’t mean they vote Republican. The statistics you are refering to does not mean a vote for Republicans.

  141. UK4LIFE247 Says:

#133 - No such thing as clean coal there buddy

  142. Big John Says:

That’s right 141. Global warming is just a terrible lie so that those evil people in the solar power industry can get richer and richer.

  143. catcrawler Says:

#142 That was done 80 years ago, but that technology was bottled up by the big dogs. It hasn’t progressed like the combustion engine has over that time because it hasn’t been used. Do you understand what I’m saying? Stop being so damn defensive and think for a second. Oh, and trust me, it won’t take 30 years to catch up fortunately. All I’m saying is that the way we function is very inefficient because burning shit doesn’t get the most out of it.

  144. univky Says:

#143 Conservative Democrats are going the way of the dinosaur…The democratic party is now the Socialist Party of America….Be proud of who you are and admit it….Just like Van Jones and so many others in the Obama administration.

Was this originally about a basketball dorm name????

  145. Secretariat Says:

Environmentalism is to this generation is what Vietnam was to the hippie generation. To tie the program to the “bad guy” (yes, companies exploiting fossil fuels ARE considered the “bad guys” by the younger generation) you can only hurt the program. UK is not going to improve the image of the coal corporations, but the coal corporations already have hurt UK’s image just by making this an issue. It can only get worse.

  146. Cawood2Cal Says:

    139. Why then did they not choose the new Pharmacy Building if it’s not about Kentucky Basketball? … Of course it’s about basketball — more specifically about the advantages of being associated with fan’s LOVE for the program … The pharmacy program is Top 5 and has been for 30 years. Coal could sponsor that building could they not? But the thought never crossed their minds and you know it. Because they obviously want their brand associated with the basketball program. So don’t tell me they’re not sponsoring our program — and it’s not theirs to sponsor.

  147. LeBowlingAlley Says:

“the lie of global warming”. who told you it was a lie?

  148. booted Says:

146 - actually 95% of global warming is out of our hands. So we are trying to control only 5% of it…thats why Cap & Trade seems a little extreme in order to manage only 5% of CO emmissions. Every little bit counts, I guess.

  149. univky Says:

#146–If you don’t think it’s about people making money, you’re sadly mistaken.

  150. ZachMorris Says:

    98. Yeah, I guess the academic world will stop taking research done by the mining engineering department seriously because someone from the coal industry donated money to the university.

They’ll just look past the fact that we have the nation’s most respected researcher on mine ventilation who is in the process of developing a training regiment to be used by the entire industry and backed by MSHA. I guess his opinion will instantly become void because Joe Craft wanted the word coal in the name of a state of the art dorm.

  151. ih8winning Says:

    150. Are you saying you would be alright with it if coal sponsored the pharmacy building?

  152. univky Says:

#151……Explain the ice age starting or melting

  153. ZachMorris Says:

    150. Sort of like Windstream and Kroger doesn’t sponsor the basketball team. Or Friends of Coal doesn’t sponsor the football team. Ever watch the jumbotron at Commonwealth? Give me a break.

  154. catcrawler Says:

#153. That’s a two way street buddy. The same people not wanting global warming to exist have a major financial incentive too!!!!

  155. belgium Says:

    116- nicely played, sir.
    125 & 131- amen.
I am not pleased with this name change, but it is what it is.

When I saw your user name, Big John, I wondered if you have been drinking since the river took Emmy Lou. (Please someone, gimme a shout out on that reference!)

  156. Cawood2Cal Says:

    155. If they built it, yes … just keep their mitts off the basketball program.

  157. ih8winning Says:

    161. A little bit hypocritical, don’t ya think?

  158. Cawood2Cal Says:

    157. You know the difference between advertising and brand management right?

  159. booted Says:

    149 - I think UK’s image was tarnished back in the 50s…

  160. Secretariat Says:

    Back to the point…
The fact that there is a NEED to defend this to the program’s biggest supporters (yes, I give KSRers a lot of credit) shows that there is a problem/disconnect. If you can’t defend it to the people who WANT to love the program, then how are you going to defend it to those who are trying to make a decision about it?

  161. UK4LIFE247 Says:

Guess no one read my stuff :(

  162. univky Says:

#158 I’m not disagreeing with you on that. But we (the consumers) will pay the most in jobs lost and financially if the global warming myth continues to take hold.

Please someone explain the ice age starting and melting (without the help of the evil cars, airplanes, smokestacks, etc. to cause it).

The earth is much more powerful and resilient than we can ever imagine.

  163. Cawood2Cal Says:

    162. Pursuing a degree is about money while the fan’s relationship with Kentucky Basketball is not.

  164. ZachMorris Says:

    131. Coal reserves will run out in 15 years? There are 270 billion tons of recoverable reserves left in the US, which at the present rate of use would allow it to meet domestic demand for 250 years. Couple that with increasing technology in cleaning and mining and you see that there is going to still be a place for coal here. Coal is found outside of the Central Appalachian region, you should look into the Powder River Basin.

  165. univky Says:

And for the record I’m not opposed to alternative energy resources. I think we should use it all. Just not change our entire economy because of a falsehood.

  166. UKSoCalCampus Says:

150- I REALLY hope that UK wouldn’t stoop to the level of allowing industries and corporations to start naming schools/academic buildings. There’s no way we’d ever hit top 20 university if they went down that road.

  167. UKSoCalCampus Says:

169- Why would we run at the current rate of use for the next 15 years?

  168. LeBowlingAlley Says:

    156 - you explain it.

  169. ih8winning Says:

    162. I don’t see how you can equate the fan’s relationship with Kentucky Basketball with the name of a dorm. If they would have given the lodge this name at no cost what would your excuse be then?

  170. veeper Says:

172 — LOL yeah right — UK would never stoop to allowing building to be named for anyone or any company. LOL

    http://www.uky.edu/CampusGuide/buildings.html

  171. ih8winning Says:

    sorry, 168.

  172. veeper Says:

Can we all just stop farting - it hurts the environment.

  173. UKSoCalCampus Says:

156- Ice caps start melting (already happening) which causes the oceans to rise, flooding many major metropolitan areas, this also results in a massive desalination of the oceans near the poles, the ocean currents are based on salinity, the oceans near the equator are then relatively saturated compared to the poles, resulting in a lowered temperature across the oceans, resulting in a general decrease in overall surface temperature of the Earth, which leads to an ice age.

  174. ZachMorris Says:

    172. Because there is no feasible replacement in place. I’m all for alternative energy but there is no form of technology out there that would realistically replace coal in meeting the nation’s energy demands. Meanwhile, a great deal of work is being done to make coal a more environmental friendly form of energy. The first clean coal power plant was opened in Germany this year, and there are numerous companies in America working on developing the same technology. Along the same lines there are countless American companies working on coal gasification which will give it further use in the future.

  175. Cawood2Cal Says:

    174. I’d say it was a dumb name then, but that’s not what happened. What happened was the coal industry paid $7 million to have it’s brand ties to Kentucky Basketball. It’s a business decision, an advantage in their mind. However, I think it hurts UK brand. And will in turn hurt coal’s brand.

  176. Secretariat Says:

How am I able to get 80-87% of my energy from solar if coal is so “necessary”? (And that’s with only 40% efficiency from my panels…efficiency in solar has increased exponentially over the past few years, however…so whoever wanted to send me their electric bill can do so once they “catch up” and stop living with outdated systems). Last I checked, coal isn’t used to run vehicles or farm machinery (although I understand that they are run on other fossil fuels). So I don’t understand the insistance that coal is a needed or desirable option.

  177. veeper Says:

But what about the fart problem?? Oh the horror of it all…………….

  178. UKSoCalCampus Says:

175- Which buildings are you talking about?

  179. univky Says:

#173 I did….read back Thanks for playing. Typical liberal response when anyone questions global warming.

#178 Oh, so it is a natural occurrence. Thanks for agreeing.

  180. blueblood Says:

I’m 41 yrs old…….some on here may say “out of touch w/ today’s youth”. However, I work w/ teenagers for a living so I’m probably a little more in touch than most my age.
Having said that, I’ve read all 180 posts thus far on this topic and anyone who believes a high school athlete w/ dreams and aspirations of playing in the NBA some day would turn down a scholarship offer to play for Coach Cal for the sole reason of their not liking the name of the dorm they’ll be living in is absolutely INSANE!

  181. ih8winning Says:

    179. You’ll never be able to convince some of these people that have never seen a mine site how hard the industry works and how much money they put into advancing technology to make coal cleaner and more efficient in the future. Some people just have an agenda.

  182. veeper Says:

    185 — Insanity rules……….

  183. veeper Says:

186 — I wonder how many of those who hate coal — drive a car or fart in the wind?

  184. UKSoCalCampus Says:

179- The number of people in the world is growing, unless viable alternatives are used to supplement coal, the rate of use will just continue to grow. So I’d give you 150 years maybe but definitely not 250.

  185. veeper Says:

FYI - It has been estimated that there are over 847 billion tonnes of proven coal reserves worldwide. This means that there is enough coal to last us over 130 years at current rates of production. In contrast, proven oil and gas reserves are equivalent to around 42 and 60 years at current production levels.

  186. ih8winning Says:

    188. Exactly. Buncha damn car drivin’ farters.

  187. veeper Says:

Personally - I like to recycle my farts - a lot of work - but it pays off.

  188. UKSoCalCampus Says:

184- It does occur naturally, but not at the rate we’re causing it. Botulism occurs naturally but you wouldn’t ignore it if it turned up in your canned goods would you?

  189. Secretariat Says:

But I’ve gotten off point again. The name looks bad for the program. Its another hurdle to overcome…and an unnecessary one at that. Why shoot yourself in the foot? The university could have at least tried to negotiate an alternative.

  190. veeper Says:

194 — the first rule of business — money talks. Nuff Said. And yes, Kentucky basketball is a business.

  191. UKSoCalCampus Says:

190- You all need to stop using current production levels to try to make a point unless there’s a big conservative plan to stop non white people from propogating.

  192. veeper Says:

196 — you aren’t figuring in the next big war — they always drop the numbers.

  193. ZachMorris Says:

    189. I don’t know if it will still be widely used in the US for 150 years, but China will use coal energy for a long time. They use more coal that any nation currently and the amount has steadily increased over recent years. With an ever growing population, they will struggle to gain independence of it.

    http://www.futuregenalliance.org/

On a side note, America’s two largest coal companies are partnering with companies from around the world to produce a near zero emissions coal power plant located in the US. Here’s a link for anyone interested.

  194. Secretariat Says:

And I agree that global warming is a bunch of b-s, however smog and other environmental concerns are very real.

  195. scfcats Says:

    Nuclear Wildcat Lodge!

  196. veeper Says:

199 — yes, it’s all about the farts.

  197. EuclidOnFire Says:

But what about KSR & its affiliation with Boone’s Butcher Shop? Does KSR want to alienate all of its vegetarian readers? Also I’ve read where Cows (all livestock) have a bigger impact on climate change then Coal. The only reason Gore didn’t go after Purnell in his doc. was because they’re both Al’s.

  198. UKSoCalCampus Says:

197- Oh and the Rapture, I guess that’s 20 millions or so American Evangelicals that won’t need power anymore.

  199. veeper Says:

We need a combination of fusion reactors, typically there would be at least one redundant reactor that is used for auxiliary power and a matter/anti-matter reactor with a dilithium regulated reaction (which generates the high levels of power that are needed for use with a warp drive system), and a sophisticated battery system which kicks in for emergencies.

Just ask Spock for the schematics.

  200. veeper Says:

    202 — here you go………….

Climate chief Lord Stern: give up meat to save the planet.

    http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/environment/article6891362.ece

  201. UKSoCalCampus Says:

198- So using coal is communist! We can no longer support an industry so intrinsically tied to communism.

  202. Indycatfan Says:

Well there you have it….No Black-out Saturday and dirty coal naming itself for our beloved Basketball Lodging. I hate the name but, I heard Tampax is already renamed Uof L’s lodge as the PLUGGERS INN

  203. veeper Says:

206 — no, actually it is socialism — that has a better ring to it since communism is dead. (Sorry Castro)

  204. scfcats Says:

I’m very interested in fart harvesting, I think this might be a viable solution to our energy problem.

  205. Secretariat Says:

You know, for all the posts here saying “coal isn’t bad” and “other things are bad, too”, I haven’t seen one that tries to explain why you think coal is “good” or why I should support this grand and glorious form of energy…

  206. veeper Says:

209 — Just so happens I have an innovative copyright on my new fart harvesting machine. My IPO will be out in 2010.

  207. JPhill Says:

Let’s just keep taking things out of the planet when we can work towards preventing it. Let’s just put it of until we’re dead. Let some one else take care of it. I hope they build coal plants next to your houses.

  208. veeper Says:

210 — it keeps you warm . and what is your alternative?

  209. scfcats Says:

211 - My idea for that is a toilet with a vacuum cleaner attached where the reservoir would go. Its a bagless design.

  210. veeper Says:

214 — you do realize that corporate piracy is a crime don’t you.

  211. catcrawler Says:

#167. You are assuming that it is a myth. I can give you a quick explanation as to ONE WAY that we can go into an ice age. Basically ice that melts from the glaciers will break up the conveyor belt that cools the earth at the equator and warms it in temperate areas. http://oceanmotion.org/html/impact/conveyor.htm

Also, the glaciers reflect alot of the sun’s heat and so as glaciers shrink (WHICH IS A FACT) That allows more heat and sun to enter the atmosphere and continue the process. Once the cconveyor is broken, the poles will once again freeze and the equator will become a desert.

  212. veeper Says:

216 — see I told you farting is bad.

  213. scfcats Says:

215 - Hey you can have it, its too painful anyway. :-)

  214. OneAndDone Says:

    Cawood2Cal=0
    Coal= 1
    You suck.

  215. ZachMorris Says:

    210. Because it is the cheapest source of electricity available saving you a large amount of money on your electric bill, it is very abundant in the United States and is something that can help stabilize our economy, it can be gasified to create a fuel for vehicles to give scientists more time to develop an alternative fuel source for vehicles, and it is gives regions a source of income that they would be unable to generate otherwise (western West Virigina, eastern Kentucky, northwestern Virginia, the Powder River Basin).

    212. Completely ignorant. If it can’t be grown, it has to be mined. There are 35 different mined minerals that are in your TV. Mining is not done only for coal.

  216. catcrawler Says:

217- Farting is good, I just did it and I’m very relieved. It is true that animals raised for slaughter do contribute to the problem, which is why vegetarian is best for humanity…. even though I ate a steak lastnight.

There are ultimately two choices people: 1) Change the way we live
    2) Decrease the world population by about half

I’m willing to bet that #2 will happen first, then #1 upon the recovery.

  217. Indycatfan Says:

216 I recently just got back from Geneva and toured Chamonix France. We saw Mount Blanc, the Glacier there is losing a quarter of a mile of ice a year b/c of global warming…..sad but true

  218. Wildcat Crazy Says:

The coal company should have changed their minds took there $7 million and gave it out as a bonus to all of the miners in Kentucky. Then all you tree huggers would be bitching cause they changed their minds.

  219. Big John Says:

169- READ my post. I NEVER said it would run out in 15 years. I said it wouldn’t be a booming buisness in 15 yrs and I stand by that claim. One large coal company which operates in Knott and Breathitt counties just laid off over 100 employees. Another 2 just declared bankruptcy. Yep coal is doing great. As far as all those coal reserves you talk about, how much of those are in Kentucky? Take a look at mined out seams in Eastern Kentucky some time. Unless this technology you speak of can create coal on it’s own, then you are sadly mistaken. BTW I have seen models that claim in less than 40 yrs coal will gone world wide (not the 250 that you claim).

  220. phat jones Says:

Not really concerned about the politics… but I still think it’s a STUPID name.

  221. ZachMorris Says:

    224. The company you speak of was a small company based only in Eastern Kentucky. There are many similar small companies dotted all over the Eastern Kentucky area which creates a lot of competition for contracts. Small companies such as this go bankrupt all the time, in fact my boss from this past summer once owned a mining company only to have it go under in 5 years. This is similar to any kind of small business attempting to start in a field full of juggernauts. This problem has been further amplified by the permit problem that is taking place because of the present administration.

The majority of the 250-270 billion tons of reserves comes from the western US. I have no idea how many reserves are left in E KY, and I am not from there. However, there have been multiple companies that have come to UK from E KY looking to hire mining engineers, saying they have a great deal of reserves available and are in the process of gaining more. Now, if there was no more coal there, why would a company pay for dinner for 100 students and take interviews all day? I think they probably have a better idea of what the realistic reserve size is.

  222. Big John Says:

226- you have your beliefs, I have mine, and I don’t think either of us will budge. It’s interesting just how passionate that people on both sides of this argument are. I personally don’t care what the name of the building is. I just happen to dissagree with those who argue that coal will continue to be as viable in Kentucky in the future as it is today. I hope it does because my job relies directly upon it. However, the signs I see almost daily don’t point to that being the case. Time will ultimately tell the tale, but it has and will continue to be an interesting debate until then. Seriously if you ever get a chance, check out some old deep mine maps if Eastern Kentucky, it’s truely amazing how much coal has been taken. It makes you wonder just how it is that the mountains don’t collapse.

  223. BCO Says:

Im from Bell County…come from a long line of coal miners, and worked a short time in the mines myself. Im a huge supporter of coal, even the so called ‘controversial’ mountain top removal, which actually creates a lot of usable flat land in an area where that is a commoditiy.

Having said that, this is the most arrogant, bull-head bullshit that King Coal has pulled in a long time. How freakin selfish do you have to be to create an ultimatum of “Either you name the lodge this RIDICULOUS name or we’re not givin any money’. What a slap in the face to Joe B Hall and UK basketball.

Id have told the coal barons to shove this idea up their ass if I was Lee Todd…of course we all know morals are not one of his strong points.

What a stupid, stupid name. Matts idea was perfect…The Joe B Hall Wildcat Lodge built by Friends of Coal. Ive been working with Friends of Coal in some projects recently and asked a guy today why they insisted on being so bullheaded, and he didnt have an answer.

Bad, BAD move, coal industry. What a shame.

  224. BravoBigBlue Says:

Can we change the subject to something less divisive — like Obama or abortion?

  225. BravoBigBlue Says:

    Final score of the debate:

    Veeper 7

    Al Gore-ites 0

Thanks to all who participated and have a safe trip home.

  226. Secretariat Says:

    213/220-

I use geothermal pipes in my place and have solar for most of my other needs. My average electric bill is around $6/month. The arguments you are making are in favor of electricity (which I am damn glad to have), but offer very little in reasoning as to why coal is better than solar, hydro, wind, nuclear, or any other source of power. The rest of the world is on board with these options and the longer Kentucky waits to accept that, the harder the economic transition is going to be.

  227. Bluegrassed Says:

The amazing thing is that outside of the state of Kentucky nobody cares. It’s a huge, ball-busting debate in the commonwealth state, but outside of KY people could not care less about coal mining or mountain-top removal. It’s a non-issue and you’d get raised eyebrows and sneers if you brought it up.

  228. tonygreendoesthestankylegg Says:

3- if it were Kotex that sponsored the lodge they would just call it the “Wildcat Pad” lol
