Wildcat Coal Lodge Debate Goes National

by @ 10:45 am. Filed under Blue Blooded Opinions

Last night on MSNBC (thats the one on the left), the Rachel Maddow show debated the Wildcat Coal Lodge controversy and gave it national airtime for the first time. Rachel had a guy who is the Sports Editor for the “Nation” (I didnt know they had such a thing, but now I know where Olbermann’s career finishes) on the show and he discussed why the “Wildcat Coal Lodge” was a bad idea. Not I am not saying the guy lifted his stuff from this site…after all, the Herald Leader first reported the story…but two of his three reasons against the idea, came directly from this site…the lame name and the insult to Joe B Hall. But hey, those are obvious right? Anyone could come up with them. But then he also went farther and made the SAME BUTTER CHURN joke I did. I mean how many people make butter churn jokes anymore? Listen if you are going to steal my mediocre Civil War references, at least give me a “hat tip” in the process. Watch the clip below and then read the column I wrote on it Saturday. Now tell me that MSNBC guy is not a no-good, butter churn joke stealing fool. Now I know how you feel John Clay.

In all seriousness, I knew when I first heard the story that this was coming. The right name should be Joe B Hall Wildcat Lodge built by the Friends of Coal. The vote is today…make a sensible decision Trustee Board.

  1. Blueyouaway Says:

I just heard that UK, Joe Craft & Cal just got out of a meeting & the new Joe B. Hall Wildcat Lodge will be replaced with “The John Coalipari Wildcat Den”. Cal will also be changing his name legally to Colaipari & the Craft’s have pledged 10 Million instead of 7 Million.

  2. billybob1 Says:

    Two thoughts.
    1) The coal people should withdraw their pledge.
    2) MSNBC is the nutbag channel.

  3. NewWildcatOrder Says:

If we spurn the coal powered sponsors of the lodge, how will that effect future pledges to the Athletic program? I think it would be a huge slap in the face to the people in the Coal industry that have long supported the program if we turned them down. People need to consider that the booster program wouldn’t be what it is today without the help of the coal business boosters. There certainly wouldn’t be a Joe Craft center that we constantly love to flaunt.

  4. UkIbleedblue Says:

Who watches MSNBC? Rachel Maddow is a ______ who knows absolutely nothing about politics.

  5. UkIbleedblue Says:

As for Keith Olbermann, he banks 7.5 Million a year for Countdown on MSNBC which is dead last in news coverage.

  6. lexslamman Says:

The coal industry is dying and we shouldn’t do anything to support it, neither should UK. It is a hypocritical insult that UK is banning tobacco smoking across their campus but still pollutes their students’ lungs with their coal-burning physical plants.

  7. hardrocker488 Says:

I kinda like Matt’s idea. Name it the Joe B. Hall Wildcat Lodge but on the sign put the friends of coal logo in the lower right hand corner. Big enough that you notice it but small enough that it doesn’t overshadow or take away from the whole thing.

  8. lexslamman Says:

    4.

We all know conservatives are intimidated by strong women, unless they are airheads (Palin) or shemales (Coulter).

  9. UkIbleedblue Says:

    8. If you are a she maybe you should call Rachel, I’m sure she would/do you.

  10. TonyDelk00 Says:

Dang, he straight up jacked your joke Matt.

By the way, just because most people don’t throw a lump of coal in their fire doesn’t mean coal is outdated. Coal provides energy for over 50% of the United States and a much higher percentage for Kentucky. Warm? Thank coal. I’m not intending to give off any kind of attitude but just informing others that they depend on coal whether they like it or not. We have some of the cheapest rates of electricity in the world because of coal.

  11. Thomas Beisner Says:

So what if he stole your jokes? You have better hair! How often can we say that?

  12. Dennis Says:

#9 You sound very intelligent. Did you get all your learning from Beck?

  13. 081305 Says:

This is an excellent example of why nobody watched MSNBC…

–The Coal Lodge story is not a story. Nobody outside wildcat nation cares what the lodge is called. NBC is anti-coal, so they run the story.

–The pay czar cutting executive pay at all the big bailed out companies EXCEPT General Electric…which owns NBC…is infinitely more newsworthy. Only an idiot would not realize the blatant ideological play.

  14. ukisgr8 Says:

Thisi s the most retarded crap I have ever heard. $7 million for 4 letters and people whine? I’d let him put “My wife is a slut” across the front of my house for $7 million. Heck, I’d give him my wife for $7 million. I can’t believe this is even a discussion. No one is going to donate $7 million to a building without naming rights, no one, even Joe B Hall didn’t do that when he raised the money to build the 1st wildcat lodge. You guys realize Joe B Hall’s name is on the first lodge because he raised the money, right? It’s not to honor him. And Rupp Arena, when we build a new one, the biggest donor will get the naming rights, you guys also realize that, right? The tree huggers just need to go away forever, die a miserable death. I’m pro environment but a name has zilch to do with the environment.

  15. GoCats2010 Says:

    HE TOOK YER JOKE

please if you get it play along, this could be entertaining

  16. Biggass Hungguy Says:

Guys, it is now more important than ever to send your donations through PayPal to BiggassHungguy@yahoo.com so we can name the new lodge ‘Biggass Hungguy Wildcat Lodge’.

The drive for $8 million is going strong, and every little bit helps. We can save ourselves the national embarrassment of having a ‘Coal Lodge’ and every little bit helps.

As an added bonus everyone who donates $1,000 or more will get their name etched onto a brick at the new ‘Biggass Hungguy Wildcat Lodge’, so please hirry, the time is now.

  17. Dennis Says:

It really doesn’t bother me that Mr. Craft wants Coal in the name. He get the $7M rounded up for a state-of-the-art building so let him have his way.

  18. JARED QUILLEN Says:

I smell a comments section political debate coming. 16 Check’s in the mail.

  19. JMBlue Says:

3- The Coal industry is not alone when it comes to contributing. There are many people who contribute to UK athletics without insisting putting the name of a rock on a building. It is cheesy at best and divisive at worst. I like Matt’s suggestion, but since it makes sense, the donors probably won’t compromise.

  20. UkIbleedblue Says:

#12 I got my education from my old man who worked underground for 25 years in the coal mines of Eastern Ky. He provided for our family and put my a$$ through college.

  23. KYStout Says:

At least it won’t be called the YUM! center.

  24. NotTheSlickistRick Says:

14 Would You write “my wife is a slut” for $7? Since you have already established the underlying point, the rest is just a matter of monetary negotiation.

  25. Flag City Cat Says:

    23’s comments are somewhat Ironic…nice!

    Flag City

  26. ukisgr8 Says:

#17, exactly. I’m not pro or anti coal(I guess pro if you consider it’s what Kentucky is built upon and will be for another century) but it builds a building that taxpayers don’t have to pay for. Want to complain about buildings, go to Papa Johns. If not for them and others like them fat people would go away. But since liberals are the anti-coal people, there is only 1 true logical, affordable alternative and that is Nuclear. So I ask the libs here, care to open up your back yards for a Nuclear plant? Didn’t think so, so move on with this ridiculous discussion.

  27. KYStout Says:

#20…any of them donating $7 million bucks?

  28. ukcats07 Says:

6, you think the coal industry is dying? I sure hope not. I really enjoy electricity. You better hurry out to Wal-Mart to stock up on candles if the coal industry is dying. Over 95% of the electricity generated in Kentucky comes from coal. Oh, we should switch to wind or solar? Ok, be prepared for your electric bill to at least triple.

  29. Indycatfan Says:

14 and 21 I fully agree with you b/c many of my uncles worked those mines, they were and are a sourse of revenue that noone else was willing to give them jobs when our country was at it’s worst economics in decades. I’m sure those who are at the acme of this will use good judgement IF they do decide to build a new dorm for the players

  30. OneAndDone Says:

To his last statement “we want a University that speaks to the 21st Century, not the 19th Century”, just a small fact….49% of the United States TOTAL power is coal supplied. Idiot.

  31. BUWildcat10 Says:

    15 - south park?

  32. JMBlue Says:

28- Collectively, yep. I guess it is OK to sell your soul if the money is right by your line of thinking. We just have a different school of thought. There is no right or wrong in it.

  33. Jabroni Says:

Let’s be honest. No one calls the current dorm “Joe B. Hall Wildcat Lodge” and if they change the name to coal no one will call it “Wildcat Coal Lodge” either. Everyone just calls it Wildcat Lodge. I say who cares, take Craft’s money, build a sweet dorm that the team, coaches, and RECRUITS will love and move on.

  34. KYStout Says:

It will be named whatever they decide to name it, the non-story about it having coal in the name will flare up a little during construction and then die away. The first future UK All-American recruit that walks through those doors will hardly notice, or care, that “coal” is in the name.

Alternately, it will be another reason for fans of UL/Kansas etc. to hang on our nutsack.

  35. BUWildcat10 Says:

23 - Chill dude. I doubt Matt is ACTUALLY pissed, he’s just amused by the fact that this guy MIGHT have stolen his joke and he wanted to point it out.

  36. booted Says:

Who cares what they name it? And I don’t think any student/athelte cares what the place is called as long as it “dope” inside.

Moan & complain, thats all half of the UK fan base does everyday all day. Makes you wonder if they enjoy their lives at all.

  37. Jabroni Says:

Oh, and then name something else after Joe B. Hall.

  38. citycat Says:

The only person more out of touch than Rachel Maddow is Keith Olbermann.

  39. Paul Crewes Bookie Says:

Remember that “Go Green” convention they had at Rupp the other day? The electricity used to power their little electric cars comes from coal. And the pot those tree huggers smoked was grown on a reclaimed mine site. So suck it.

  40. lexslamman Says:

    37.

Actually, young people do care about this kind of stuff - often passionately enough to reject the backwards folks at the backwards university in the backwards state that taunt their continued use of the backwards and obsolete energy source.

  41. JMBlue Says:

27- Be careful. The “dope” industry is pretty big in Kentucky as well. Before you know it, we will be renaming the library in their honor.

  42. KYStout Says:

#33 - “sell your soul”??? lol where did THAT nonesense come from?

Has 49% of the US population “sold their soul” by using coal supplied power?

  43. JMBlue Says:

    oops. 37

  44. ukcats07 Says:

41, obsolete energy source? That seriously made me laugh out loud. You couldn’t be more out of touch. If you’re anywhere inside the state of Kentucky right now on your computer, you can thank coal. Otherwise you’d be sitting in the dark.

  45. ukisgr8 Says:

#34, Amen. #33 and #41, not everyone is left of Karl Marx and thinks that way.

  46. Paul Crewes Bookie Says:

So can we go ahead and write lexslamman off as a crazy kook? Because all credibility was lost with Comment 41.

  47. lexslamman Says:

    46.

We’re not talking left of Karl Marx. We’re talking left of Dick Armey and George W. Bush.

Republicans have become such insane, out-of-touch extremists that they see moderates as radicals.

  48. booted Says:

41…they do? I didn’t realize they did. How do you know they do?

By why is it backwards? Why so much hatred for your state? Does it shame you that your state’s economic engine has run on 3 things: coal, tobacco/weed and bootleggin? You would rather benefit from coal but not talk about. Us backwards people from KY don’t feel the need to complain about someone giving the university money.

  49. UkIbleedblue Says:

#41 Why don’t you take your backward democratic marxist post to another website that really cares about your thoughts.

  50. JMBlue Says:

46- You have absolutely no idea of my politcal ideology (or lack therof). Just because I think the name is cheesy, you equate me with a Marxist? Jesus, it is shallow robots like you that make the jobs of politicians so easy.

  51. Wildcat Crazy Says:

    6. How dumb are you really? Let the coal industry die. Wow, that is a great idea dumb@ss.

  52. lexslamman Says:

    47.

Why should pointing out that 18-22 year old students often embrace environmental activism and that coal is about 100 years obsolete in any way affect my credibility?

Face it. The coal industry is going the same way as the horse industry - down the tubes. We’re already nearing peak coal, what’s the point in constraining ourselves to a destructive limited resources? It certainly makes no sense to align our state’s flagship academic institution with a dying and exploitative industry.

  53. Paul Crewes Bookie Says:

50…THANK YOU! EXACTLY what I was thinking. Go to the Florida boards or something, where you won’t matter.

  54. Big Blue Cali-Zone Says:

Nothing like a good ole Political Geek fight to get you through the week. I got news for both sides,,you’re both losers. MSNBC is a quacky for the left as FOX News is for the right. Politics are screwed up just by way of simple theory, it’s always been that way, and nothing will change. Those yelling about coal and it’s destroying health and country, remember that when you flip your light switch and t.v. on tonight. Coal is not perfect, but neither is anything else. So for all of you Political Flag Waivers on either side,,,you are all losers.

  55. lexslamman Says:

    50.

Clearly, you care about those thoughts, or you wouldn’t act so butthurt over the fact that I am correct.

  56. Paul Crewes Bookie Says:

53…More credibility lost. You realize there are 250 years worth of coal reserves left in Kentucky? I’d suggest doing more research. Now go on. Shoo. The Florida boards are waiting for you.

  57. UKBoo Says:

36, Chill? LOL I’m chilled just fine and need little help from you in doing so. The real funny thing here is Matt readily admitted HE got it elsewhere. I find that chillingly amusing..

    Respectfully, The chilled one

  58. Wildcat Crazy Says:

    53. It is dying because people like you want it to die.

  59. CatsFanInSC Says:

Ok, it’s time for BTI to step in and lead us all in a rousing rendition of “Kumbaya” as we all hold hands and sing along. Seriously, this isn’t even a debate. None of us have any input into the situation. Why argue and call each other names? It takes away from what Big Blue Nation is all about.

  60. minton Says:

  61. lexslamman Says:

    49.

It hurts, actually, that this state is dependent on industries that are already unable to carry the load as far as revenue production is concerned. It also sucks that this state is so conservative that we aren’t looking to invest in other sectors that actually have a future. As much as I disagree with Hal Rogers, he at least had the vision to try to use tax dollars to fund transportation infrastructure in the part of Kentucky that needs it most. The rest of the idiots we have representing us (of both parties) are wasting money bailing out industries like coal companies, horse farmers, and tobacco farmers that literally have no future.

  62. cobrecat Says:

The New Joe B Hall Wildcat Lodge from the Friends of Coal.

  63. Dennis Says:

#60 As BTI would say “Kumbaya and all that SH*T”

  64. TonyDelk00 Says:

Yeah, pretty sure lexslamman has no clue what he is talking about. His credibility = 0 . Obsolete? How in the world do you justify coal as being obsolete?

  65. lexslamman Says:

    59.

The coal industry is dying because most of everyone, even China, the most coal dependent nation on the planet, wants it to die. They see that it is foolish and insustainable so they are moving to other forms of energy and investing in innovations in nuclear and renewable energy technologies. Conservatives and environmentalists in this country have both hampered development of modern energy alternatives in the U.S.A., meaning we are running off a 5-plus-decade-old energy grid and a century-obsolete energy source.

Do you really think that any one voice is enough to drive this change? It is a global evolution of consciousness when it comes to energy use, and people like the “Friends of Coal” are the dinosaurs.

  66. Paul Crewes Bookie Says:

62…you’re losing credibility like a sieve now. The coal industry has not, nor will they, taken a federal bailout. WHERE are you getting your facts? Because they are wrong. Very wrong.

While other industries were down, coal was doing well. Well, doing well before these recent attacks.

And if you don’t like how “conservative” out fine state is, And Im saying this seriously, maybe it’s time to find a new area to live in. Because we’re not changing.

  67. veeper Says:

#49, you really need to educate yourself about coal - before you speak again.
Washington, DC – Leading academics from an interdisciplinary Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) panel issued a report today that examines how the world can continue to use coal, an abundant and inexpensive fuel, in a way that mitigates, instead of worsens, the global warming crisis. The study, “The Future of Coal – Options for a Carbon Constrained World,” advocates the U.S. assume global leadership on this issue through adoption of significant policy actions.

Led by co-chairs Professor John Deutch, Institute Professor, Department of Chemistry, and Ernest J. Moniz, Cecil and Ida Green Professor of Physics and Engineering Systems, the report states that carbon capture and sequestration (CCS) is the critical enabling technology to help reduce CO2 emissions significantly while also allowing coal to meet the world’s pressing energy needs.

According to Dr. Deutch, “As the world’s leading energy user and greenhouse gas emitter, the U.S. must take the lead in showing the world CCS can work. Demonstration of technical, economic, and institutional features of CCS at commercial scale coal combustion and conversion plants will give policymakers and the public confidence that a practical carbon mitigation control option exists, will reduce cost of CCS should carbon emission controls be adopted, and will maintain the low-cost coal option in an environmentally acceptable manner.”

Dr. Moniz added, “There are many opportunities for enhancing the performance of coal plants in a carbon-constrained world – higher efficiency generation, perhaps through new materials; novel approaches to gasification, CO2 capture, and oxygen separation; and advanced system concepts, perhaps guided by a new generation of simulation tools. An aggressive R&D effort in the near term will yield significant dividends down the road, and should be undertaken immediately to help meet this urgent scientific challenge.”

    Key findings in this study:

    * Coal is a low-cost, per BTU, mainstay of both the developed and developing world, and its use is projected to increase. Because of coal’s high carbon content, increasing use will exacerbate the problem of climate change unless coal plants are deployed with very high efficiency and large scale CCS is implemented.
    * CCS is the critical enabling technology because it allows significant reduction in CO2 emissions while allowing coal to meet future energy needs.
    * A significant charge on carbon emissions is needed in the relatively near term to increase the economic attractiveness of new technologies that avoid carbon emissions and specifically to lead to large-scale CCS in the coming decades. We need large-scale demonstration projects of the technical, economic and environmental performance of an integrated CCS system. We should proceed with carbon sequestration projects as soon as possible. Several integrated large-scale demonstrations with appropriate measurement, monitoring and verification are needed in the United States over the next decade with government support. This is important for establishing public confidence for the very large-scale sequestration program anticipated in the future. The regulatory regime for large-scale commercial sequestration should be developed with a greater sense of urgency, with the Executive Office of the President leading an interagency process.
    * The U.S. government should provide assistance only to coal projects with CO2 capture in order to demonstrate technical, economic and environmental performance.
    * Today, IGCC appears to be the economic choice for new coal plants with CCS. However, this could change with further RD&D, so it is not appropriate to pick a single technology winner at this time, especially in light of the variability in coal type, access to sequestration sites, and other factors. The government should provide assistance to several “first of a kind” coal utilization demonstration plants, but only with carbon capture.
    * Congress should remove any expectation that construction of new coal plants without CO2 capture will be “grandfathered” and granted emission allowances in the event of future regulation. This is a perverse incentive to build coal plants without CO2 capture today.
    * Emissions will be stabilized only through global adherence to CO2 emission constraints. China and India are unlikely to adopt carbon constraints unless the U.S. does so and leads the way in the development of CCS technology.
    * Key changes must be made to the current Department of Energy RD&D program to successfully promote CCS technologies. The program must provide for demonstration of CCS at scale; a wider range of technologies should be explored; and modeling and simulation of the comparative performance of integrated technology systems should be greatly enhanced.

Politicians are going to support what ever is in THEIR best interest, no matter what it is. They will lay back and wait until the Poll of Public Opinion has been voiced, then take their stand. That’s how the game is played, makes no different if you crap Red or Blue. I used to think that Hal Rogers was different, but have recently learned that he is not. McConnell, a dweeb, who would sell out the country if he thought it would gain him politically. And for you Lexslamajamawhatdafuk ever your name is, if you think coal is going away, you are the biggest dumba$$ of them all. This country will no doubt, and should, gravitate toward other forms of energy, but 5 generations from now, Coal will still be the primary source of fuel.

  70. lexslamman Says:

    57.

Peak resources has nothing to do with the size of our reserves, it has to do with our capacity to access them. We’re near the peak of the amount of coal that we can access at any one time in this country. And still the coal industry only employs 13,000 or so Kentuckians - hardly an essential industry to us economically speaking. We can lop off the coal industry, move to clean and efficient nuclear power, and barely tell the difference, except in our cleaner water and plummeting lung cancer rates.

  71. ukisgr8 Says:

ok, let me get this straight, people want to turn down $7 million because the name the guy requested is “cheesy” and because “coal is dying”? Anyone care to give a third reason?

  73. UkIbleedblue Says:

#62 I guess you are talking about that NEW GRID that the nation will hook up to which will have control over the amount of electricity that you will use. Along with health care that will be controlled over who gets it and who doesn’t, along with executive pay that determines how much people make along with the socialistic view that has become the norm in this country.

  77. lexslamman Says:

    68.

The MIT study fails to address coal mining’s threat to our water resources. The relief in the appalachian landscape is responsible for the flow of clean water from east to west across our state and the source of all of our water. Coal mining not only pollutes our commonwealth’s streams from its runoff, but operators dump the overburden from their mines into stream beds, burying the sources of our rivers permanently.

As far as the survival of my ancestors and our civilization and species is concerned, I would put clean, drinkable water ahead of cheap energy on a list of essential resources worth preserving. Since we are already nearing peak coal, the implication is that coal will soon cease to be a cheap energy source anyway, meaning big profits for coal operators but diminishing returns to us Kentuckians.

Furthermore, there is still no proven way to permanently sequester carbon emissions from coal combustion and no proven method of scrubbing CO2 from coal exhausts.

I am Mr. Craft’s personal assistant and go to college at the University of Kentucky. I have not read all of these comments but I would assume most of these comments are ragging on the coal industry for being a bunch of conservatists and how it ‘gives everyone black lung.’ Well truth be told, until your house is ran on nuclear energy or some supermutant hamsters then coal will continue to provide energy for just about every household in america. It provides 93.1% of the state of kentucky’s energy and has well over a century of reserves to go around. This is a slap in the face to any industry or booster wanting to donate. Why don’t you all give over $7 million to UK and name it what you want. Joe B. Hall was the organizer and one of the main donors for the THIRTY YEAR OLD DORM that the players live in. Just like Coach Hall, Mr. Craft is the main organizer and donor for this new dorm as well as he funded the student only practice and over $8 million alone for the Joe Craft Center. People get a break, this is something so trivial it shouldn’t even be in an article by Tipton who loves to write about every trivial issue that arises out of the Kentucky Basketball program. For those that don’t know, the University of Kentucky has their own MINING ENGINEERING Department and it is one of the best in the nation. So do you want us to shut that down too? Think about it folks and take off you’re shades and see that the coal industry provides jobs, health care, and a way of life for thousands of Kentucky families including myself, who my dad and grandpa (both black lung free) have worked for over 6 centuries in the coal industry. Keep it coming and it will turn off a lot of Kentucky’s biggest donors. That’s my two cents.

    3. I don’t think they should change the name of Wildcat Lodge, because Joe B. Hall put alot of work into that. His name deserves to be on that sign, but at the same time my family lives in Eastern KY so I understand that they work their asses of as well, so as proposed by Matt they should just add the sponsored by Friends of Coal at the end.

#77, then what are you arguing about? That’s what this discussion is about. People want to turn the $7 million down because of the 4 letters. That’s the discussion. Mr Craft offered up $7 million and he had only 1 request and people want that removed. If removed, the $7 million goes away. Whatever name is put on the building, it will still be called Wildcat Lodge, just as now.

Let’s debate that instead of the future of coal, because trust me– China will use coal for a long time.

  103. Perfect Patterson Says:

    85. I partially agree. Even if coal is part of the name, nobody (students, athletes, fans) is going to call it the whatever COAL lodge. It will always be the wildcat lodge. Nobody calls it the Joe B. Hall Wildcat Lodge right now! So, just take the money, make recruits happier and put the name in the sign out front.
However, it sure seems like Craft and his buddies love UK ball and they know that the only thing that UK now lacks is outstanding player dormitories (they have top coaches, top players, top facilities, and are in the running for top recruits). Hence, Cal could also turn down the offer, and I think Craft would still donate the money. Just because he is awesome, and mainly because he can and wants to!

I think the ONLY thing people should be concerned with is if they build the new lodge, it should be designed in such a way that it will not need replacing in 25-30 years. One million dollars in 1977 was a lot of money. Thirty years old and it needs replacing. Ridiculous. The new design needs to be timeless and of course green — pretty much all new commercial buildings today are going green to some degree. Who cares if “coal” is in the name. It sounds kind of dumb, but so what? If they’re willing to donate the money, they should have the naming rights.

  116. veeper Says:

    Interesting –

    Members, Board of Trustees:
    REPLACE WILDCAT LODGE STUDENT HOUSING
Recommendation: that the Board of Trustees accept a pledge of $7,000,000 from Joseph W. Craft III for and on behalf of the Difference Makers to fund the “Replace Wildcat Lodge Student Housing” project; approve transfers of up to $7,000,000 from the intercollegiate athletics quasi-endowments to provide temporary financing of the project; approve initiation of the project; and authorize the President to complete a pledge agreement.
Background: Wildcat Lodge, the campus residential housing for UK men’s basketball players and non-student athletes, was completed in 1978 and most recently renovated in 2000 to address many system and life safety issues. The new facility will continue to house both men’s basketball players and non-student athletes and will contain many of the programmatic components provided in the UK residence halls that opened in Fall 2005.
The project scope is not expected to exceed $7,000,000. Per the proposed agreement, the pledge is to be paid over a 10-year period. The project will initially be funded by transfers of up to $7,000,000 from the intercollegiate athletics quasi-endowments as needed. Payments toward the pledge will be used to replenish the quasi-endowments.
Joseph W. Craft III received his Bachelor of Science in Accounting degree and a Juris Doctor from the University of Kentucky. He is the largest donor to the University of Kentucky Athletic Association and in recognition of his contributions, the men’s and women’s basketball practice facility bears his name. The Difference Makers is a group of UK supporters, brought together by Mr. Craft, which will assist with funding the project with gifts and in-kind contributions.
Contingent upon approval by the Board of Trustees, this project will be submitted for approval to the Council on Postsecondary Education at its November 5, 2009 meeting, and then to the Capital Projects and Bond Oversight Committee at its November 17, 2009 meeting.

Just who are the — Difference Makers? Hmmmmm is Matt one??

  122. buddylove Says:

  124. NewWildcatOrder Says:

  134. JMBlue Says:

130- If that is the case, the man should be honored. His dedication to the Universtiy far exceeds writing a check, even if it is for 7 large. Again, I have no problem with including the name of a rock, but not at the expense of a UK legend on and off the court.

Big Coal wants to slap Joe B’s face. They can take their money back to the hollar where it’s needed. Why don’t they set up some schools instead?

  138. UkIbleedblue Says:

A proposal to build a new $7 million Wildcat Coal Lodge was approved Tuesday by the University of Kentucky Board of Trustees in a 17-3 vote.

The vote set off shouts from about 30 protesters, mostly students, who attended the meeting.

“Big Coal is about to go down, and the university’s going down with them,” said Cor de Jong, who described himself as ” a Lexingtonian and a basketball fan.”

A statement from students was passed out to board members moments before the vote.

“They did not read our statement,” said Katie Goldey, a senior majoring in international relations. “They weren’t even given a chance to read it.”

Athletics Director Mitch Barnhart had said earlier said the university wants to find some way to honor former basketball coach Joe B. Hall, whose name is on the current Wildcat Lodge, but details of how to do that have not been worked out.

The new building has spawned controversy centered on putting the word “coal” in the building’s name.

Because it costs more than $5 million, policy requires that the building meet the U.S. Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design standards.

Bob Wiseman, the university’s vice president of facilities, said that probably means it will take more advantage of natural light and use recycled materials as much as possible.

Wiseman said he did not know whether it would have a fireplace made of coal, as the current lodge does.

“This has not been discussed at that level yet,” he said.

The lodge will be UK’s second LEED-certified building. The first is the Davis Marksbury Building under construction next door to the parking lot where the new Wildcat Lodge will be built.

Barnhart told the trustees finance committee that the university decided late last year not to spend $1.5 million refurbishing the current lodge. The building is more than 30 years old and “it became fairly apparent that was going to be a Band-Aid,” he said.

When board member C.M. “Bill” Gatton asked what would become of the current lodge, university president Lee T. Todd Jr. said it would “go into the housing inventory.”

Gatton, for whom UK’s College of Business is named, noted that the university’s long-term plans call for a new business college building next door to the current lodge.

Todd said the lodge would not interfere with those plans.

Asked by a reporter if the building that was deemed inadequate for basketball players would be used to house other students, Todd said the current lodge would have to be evaluated until any decision was made.

  139. ukisgr8 Says:

Again, why would we honor Joe B with this building? I really don’t get that. His name was on the last building because he raised the money for it. And when we build a new Arena, it will no longer be Rupp Arena so you might as well get your crying out now.

  140. Cawood2Cal Says:

#142 No one’s crying. This fight’s just getting started. Now get your pick and hardhat and get back in the mine.

  141. JMBlue Says:

142- No one is crying. I provided an explanation that you obviously either can’t comprehend or don’t agree with. But I assure you, I am not crying. You can dumb it down by accussing me of crying simply because I don’t agree with you, but it doesn’t make your position any more compelling.

  144. LeBowlingAlley Says:

Whatever coal has done for Kentucky in the past, coal plants are one of the single biggest polluters in the world. I understand we can’t magically stop using coal, but that doesn’t mean we should support it.

  145. Cuz Cousins Says:

If the guy is paying $7 mil, let him put whatever name he wants on it. It will still be known as “Wildcat Lodge”. He’s not going to donate the money for the hell of it. It’s an advertisement…that’s the way this sh!t works. That’s why almost ever modern gym or stadium in the country has a brand name on it, instead of some sort of significant name. Welcome to the 21st century people. If you want to compromise, name it “Friends of Coal’s, Joe B. Hall Wildcat Lodge”. Then everyone is happy.

    It’s passed…get over it!

This is ridiculous and makes the University look like sell outs. I cant believe they ignored the wishes of the students who pay to go to there. I live in EKY and today on WMMT, which is Appalshops public station, they had a call in poll and even the majority of people who listen to them said it was a bad move. Sorry Joe B. but the University made the decision that coal and the politics behind it are more important to UK basketball then you or your teams ever were. Way to POLITICIZE the great tradition of UK basketball. Rachel is awesome and puts it how it is in my opinion MSNBC is the only channel worth watching for cable news.
