[Moderated by Matt Jones]

According to El Capitan Matthew Jones, UK has settled the lawsuit brought forth by former UK Men’s Basketball Coach Billy Clyde Gillispie. The settlement amount is reportedly $2.98 Million dollars. The Herald-Leader reports that UK will pay more than $265,000 in Gillispie’s legal and mediation fees.
Matt has previously reported a rumor that UK’s initial settlement offered by UK was $3 Million dollars. Most recently, the settlement amount was rumored to be increased to $4 Million dollars right before Billy Clyde was charged for a DUI in Anderson county.
You can read Matt’s analysis of Gillispie’s initial lawsuit filing where Billy was asking for fulfillment of the financial obligations set by the Memorandum of Understanding — a $6 Million dollar payout from UK.
At last, one more time for the national blogs to misspell Gillispie’s name! Don’t let me down, AOL Fanhouse!

Did Billy G. threaten a lawsuit unless UK paid him less than they were initially offering? Sounds like Billy is as good of a negotiator as he is a basketball coach.

Hey Fake Gimel, (cough) Hearld Leader (cough) is the source. I posted from them over 30 minutes ago on this. Your Captain deserves no credit here.
Here’s the document (from HL)…

October 13th, 2009 at 8:28 pm
so did UK win, or Billy G out tough ‘em? I need the world to be in black and white so I can understand it.
October 13th, 2009 at 8:28 pm
Well its 2.98 but he has to spend the next three days in a bathroom stall until he gets tougher.
October 13th, 2009 at 8:29 pm
unbelievable that a man who drives on our State’s highways piss-drunk can be awarded that type of money by a state school. O well, such is the world in which we live
October 13th, 2009 at 8:32 pm
Actually we all found out at the same time when UK sent the news release out to the entire media.
October 13th, 2009 at 8:34 pm
Thats Right. I found out right after the Iron Sheik twittered he would Humble the Bryan the Intern.
October 13th, 2009 at 8:34 pm
#2 — I just got a call from Matt; I presume UKAA released the news to him, H-L and every media outlet. I linked the H-L article.

#6 - P.PattersonISwalkingthruthatdoor - How would either have anything to do with one another?
Morals and money? Are you associating those in some manner? The first job in the history of humankind was prostitution. State school money is tucked into garter belt and bartenders pockets every day of the week. That’s nothing new.
October 13th, 2009 at 8:38 pm
#9 - The Fake Gimel Martinez - You edited your post after I having been called out on it. Good to see the edit, bad to see no trace that you did it. Your way, right?
October 13th, 2009 at 8:38 pm
who gives a flying sh@t who broke it first. it’s news, he settled, who cares.
I’m glad it’s over. Move on to the next bar Clyde, the Cats have a title to win….

***ALERT*****ALERT****ALERT*****
We have a potential NERD FIGHT Brewing!
October 13th, 2009 at 8:45 pm
(10) i’m not saying that it’s shocking or not legal or anything else. i’m just saying that it’s a shame that someone who does something like driving drunk on a highway can be awarded that type of money in a court of law. do morally depraved and evil people make lots of money in the real world? of course, and usually more than the average “good” person. is it legal when they do? usually. it doesn’t make it any less disappointing, though.
sorry for using “unbelievable” in my first post. should have put “disappointing” or something else…….
October 13th, 2009 at 8:47 pm
Hah, I KNEW he wouldn’t get $6 million. Whenever the discussion came up, I was adamant he wouldn’t see more than $3 million. Good move by Gillispie to take it.
October 13th, 2009 at 8:52 pm
I love what you do here Matt (most of it), but claiming credit or having someone claim credit for you on news that’s broadcasted out by an entity (UKAA) like that that lowers your legitimacy as being genuine, instead of raising it.
There’s no reason to even consider it. Others can do it, so what. It’s deceiving. Trust is what you should maintain, not petty chips.
Claim a story that YOU obtain. Not a spoonfed broadcast. It’s not even a consideration.

Sounds like the greatest lawyer in Texas wanted out - cut his fee and told BCG he better take the deal.
Smart move to put it behind the university. Half should go back to the gov’t - I hope the IRS is watching - payment to BCG and his “business” smells fishy.

#11 — I posted the initial text at 8:10, and then went to work to flesh out the details. I googled and found the H-L’s story before I had seen your comment.
I’m not for sure if others are picking a fight here or not, but I’m pretty sure that in my headline or in my text of my article do I say that Matt Jones reported this news FIRST. Matt gets news releases like what the H-L is reporting on at the same time they get him, since he’s considered a member of the UK Press.
I ain’t got nothing but love for ya, AssistByJohnWall.
Now I feel like we’re a bunch of television stations fighting. “We were the FIRST, LIVE AND ON-AIR, TO REPORT ABOUT A TORNADO IN A TRAILER PARK!”

TEAM COVERAGE!
October 13th, 2009 at 9:13 pm
There was only 1 FIRST and that was HoboKat. Congratulations on you Boones Butcher Shop Bologna!
October 13th, 2009 at 9:27 pm
#18 - The Fake Gimel Martinez - Collect $200 and pass Go, you bring love into it and I have to lay down the gloves. I have to assume intent wasn’t a claim grab now, regardless of how it reads.
October 13th, 2009 at 9:28 pm
Didnt jones say he would be lucky to get anything? Jones might have to get some negotiator tips from Clyde!
October 13th, 2009 at 9:28 pm
That s all this site is anymore who broke it first!
October 13th, 2009 at 9:29 pm
I maintain that BCG is a cause of many a nerd fight among Cat fans. BCG nerd fight can be treated however with a strong prescription of Coach Cal.
October 13th, 2009 at 9:31 pm
14 - Last I checked the UKAA got its from TV & ticket revenue, donors, advertising revenue, etc), not the Commonwealth.
BCG will get hit with a nice tax bill, not to worry.
Agreed that for BCG to be driving at any given time is very dangerous, and don’t want my family within 50 miles of his car when he’s behind the wheel, but its a separate issue from the MOU settlement.
Hope he doesn’t kill/maim anyone while driving, gets some help for his obvious issues, and that his legal fees, etc from that DUI defense and treatment take as much of his settlement money as possible.
October 13th, 2009 at 9:32 pm
25 - **got its $$, sorry for the typo
October 13th, 2009 at 9:38 pm
really now? Prostitution is NOT The first job in the history of humankind. Please tell me where you get this info? I know you aren’t talking about Mary Magdelene.
October 13th, 2009 at 9:48 pm
(27) he’s talking about marriage….
October 13th, 2009 at 10:17 pm
ESPN says that both law suits have been dropped…nothing bout a settlement.
October 13th, 2009 at 10:25 pm
You heard it here first! AssistbyJohnWall is a d-bag…
Can we now please turn the page. I could give a rats ass about that mistake from Texas.
October 13th, 2009 at 10:32 pm
#30 - njcat54 - Unable to have discussion without calling someone a name. Do you really miss the 3rd grade that much?
October 13th, 2009 at 10:33 pm
#27 - catty - Go talk to some historians to educate yourself on the topic. The only debate is the first job could be generalized as “sales”. As someone has to sell that ass.
October 13th, 2009 at 10:41 pm
32 -
“sell that ass” Ha!
October 13th, 2009 at 10:50 pm
$2.98, huh … woulda been 3 but gillispie gave back his 2 cents.
October 14th, 2009 at 12:49 am
30. I thought it way before you typed it.
October 14th, 2009 at 6:35 am
So UK admits they owed BG some remaining salary?
That’s puzzling to me…. SINCE HE WAS FIRED!!!!!!
October 14th, 2009 at 6:39 am
36) Yep, the signed MOU by both parties stated that he would get paid if he was let go within the first 5 years or whatever.
