Remember Dusty Mills? He was the kid who was a student at Kentucky during Billy Clyde’s first year, went to the open tryout, was the only player picked and thus was a walk-on during that first year. He then was kicked off of the team, supposedly for laughing during a game, and then was interviewed by Jerry Tipton. That interview was interesting because it was the second (Alex Legion was the first) hint that we had that Clyde might be a bit odd, as Mills complained of Gillispie being “abusive” to his players. Those comments were met at the time by the fanbase with derision for Mills and accusations that he was a Gator fan and thus a wimp. He was a Gator fan growing up, but as it turns out, his complaints ended up being somewhat legit.
Well now we learn that he has tried out for and made the Ball State basketball team. This means that in addition to having a cute girlfriend, Mills has now made two Division I basketball teams by the hardest of methods…the open tryout. What is even more fascinating is that he did it, even though by all accounts he barely played in high school. Bizarre indeed. We congratulate Dusty Mills and remember fondly the days of he and the Big Black Member and their ridiculous pictures on Facebook, one of which is below:

Wow! And that ‘wow’ was NOT directed at the fact he made the UK and Ball State basketball teams on an open tryout. I’ll give the kid credit where credit is due.

6-Please tell me that you did not just compare Billy Gillispe to Bobby Knight. A failure in every way (Gillispe) to a winner (Knight — who graduated all of his players) and 99% of them, with maybe the exception of Steve Reed, appreciate what Bobby Knight did for them in life.
September 24th, 2009 at 3:14 pm
I knew a Bobby lover would jump in, Bobby and Billy where both Bullies, Bobby won Biilly did not.
September 24th, 2009 at 3:18 pm
That girl is smoking! Man I miss college….
September 24th, 2009 at 3:18 pm
ha ha….and you know them both personally? I do believe that Gillispe has had multiple players come out saying that he was abusive. If it weren’t for Knight grabbing a player (Reed) during practice (which happens all over the place if you’ve ever played sports before)…you would have never heard anything of Knight.
September 24th, 2009 at 3:23 pm
Knight is more than respected by all of his peers and basketball analysts. Don’t you think some of these coaches or analysts would have dropped the gauntlet on him if he was out of line ALL of the time?? More people out there need to have the values of Knight (maybe not the aggressiveness….b/c I will admit he’s been out of line a few times), but he has always had the STUDENT-ATHLETES best interest at heart…preparing them for the real world.
September 24th, 2009 at 3:43 pm
HA Ha your all alike ” and when rape is inevitable sit back and injoy it ” all i am saying is if Billy had won 50 games here, some people, would have over looked his short comings, just like they did Bobby till he wasn’t winning.
September 24th, 2009 at 4:47 pm
Wasn’t the guy’s name NEIL Reed? Just for the sake of accuracy. And I wouldn’t want my son to play for Knight OR Gillispie, if given the choice.
September 24th, 2009 at 5:02 pm
35) Yes it was Neil Reed…not Steve. You’re is the correct use of ‘your’ in your statement. And I’m not sure what that means, but that would definitely be one of the times he was WAY out of line. I’m sure you missed the part where I said that up there. I didn’t say he was the perfect guy…what I did say though, was that almost every guy that played for him appreciates him. Billy won 50 games here, but his teams did not play up to their talent. He was an awful coach…..not to mention he was out drinking in public and looking like a fool. It has nothing to do with winning. I liked Bobby Knight from the beginning and still like what he stands for. You shouldn’t make assumptions about people based on construed comments made from the media because they always get re-phrashed. You don’t know the guy.
September 24th, 2009 at 6:54 pm
JUst saw a great bumper sticker on line today….I’d rather be car pooling with Billy G, than dining with Ricky P…..
September 25th, 2009 at 8:24 am
This is why I don’t waste my time,it’s always well if you had played sports you would have understood, or your to dumb to understand, Bobby knight had trouble with students, players, and many others on and off campus, oh and I love the one about the media, it’s ther fault, I wish I knew him like you do.
