Waltah to the Altah of the Cards…..

by @ 12:32 am. Filed under Blue Blooded Opinions

walterm.jpeg

The most depressing news of today wasnt necessarily the story of the newest UL assistant coach (that would be the Joel Seigel death), but it was nevertheless difficult to take. Walter McCarty’s decision to go to UL is understandable as he wants to get in the coaching profession. But now yet another of the Cat family has headed to the school down the road and this time it isnt a Marvin Stone or Steve Masiello who we barely like, but rather is one of the true biggies of the program, Waltah. I cant blame the kid, but it still is kind of a bummer. But hey, I guess this means that Walter’s R&B CD must not have sold so well. I wish Walter much luck and hope he is fortunate enough to move onto another locale very soon. ;)

  6. Mike Says:

Matt gives news, so be happy.

  7. Austin Says:

I dont know about you guys but im disappointed not because of Walter i really dont care its not that big of a deal Pitino was his coach but i got on here excited wanting to know about Washington and Clark and other recruits cuz for some reason i was 100 percent sure there was going to be some news because we all know Clark is in Lexington right now and there was suppose to be a Washington commitment today but o well its not matts fault i just thought i should say something cuz of how i felt but keep up the good work guys love the website lol

  8. Mike Says:

you will get it on sunday.

  9. Anonymous Says:

does anybody know anything about the strength and conditioning job?
Like who is being looked at?

  10. Wizard of Westwood (Sam Gilbert) Says:

Cant blame Walt. With Pitino’s track record of developing coaches he would be an idiot not too take that job. Maybe he cant cut his teeth in Louyland and come replace Cyrien in a year or two!

  11. JB Says:

Hey, maybe U of L will soon change its colors to blue and white, and start chanting C-A-T-S at its games too…I mean, they keep taking our leftovers…Pitino, Masiello, Stone, McCarty…it is obvious they want to be just like us…you know, all little brothers do…

  12. SagaciousMind Says:

Who cares? He just wants to be on the same staff as his former coach and he is willing to let him be on the staff. Can you blame the guy? It just sucks that it happens to be Louisville, but oh well. We will still be beatin them come December.

  13. the only sane person left Says:

I agree with 11, when Pitno decides to go back to the NBA for that ring he
will never get, I half expect Louisville to go after Tubby.
Also Matt- with only 3 openings for 08, and with Liggins committing, do you
think the coaching staff is banking on players (Carter, Williams, Jasper, and
Porter)transfering away, thus opening up more spots? The 5/8 rule is gone,
    right?

  14. inside info Says:

Ky fans really love there basketball and obviously UL fans love KY basketball too.LMFAO,you will never even come close to UK basketball so get over it UL fans. You SUCK.GO BIG BLUE

  15. joe Says:

    13. Matt is no expert. You are probably better off looking up the info yourself.

  16. inside info Says:

Bryan Davis Joe Lee is tired of smacking you around so get under his desk where you belong.(sorry not basketball related)

  17. Matt Jones Says:

I think there is no doubt that there will be players who end up transferring at the end of the season

  18. bcgfan Says:

there will be players begging to transfer after the first month of practice….(can they transfer at the end of the fall semester?) their egos will get them through ‘boot camp’ and they will figure the worst is over…. then the real hell begins - actual bball practice, BCG style!

  19. Cat Says:

I do not listen to that type of music, but the sample of the music on his CD I heard was not that bad. No…I am not gay!

  20. Droops Says:

How many fans wanted Pelphrey to come and coach here instead of Gillispie of Donovan? Not that many. How many have said it’s more important to bring in at least one Kentucky player to the team instead of going for higher-ranked players from elsewhere? Not very many.

I call BS on this thread. The only thing that Kentucky fans care about anymore (it seems) is winning. There’s no loyalty to the kids, past or future. Why should they be loyal to us?

We reap what we sow. Hope everyone’s happy. :(

  21. trueblue Says:

Come on guys, it just another ex UK player still involved with Basketball. Examples: Pelphery (Fl. & Ark.), Ford (Eastern & UM).
Pitino will be a good teacher and think about it, some day (I hope many years from now) If Billy G. ever leaves we will have a list of former Big Blue players, who know the tradition, to choose from as our future coach.

  22. Burly Says:

I hope the worst for Walter and the Cards. I hope him, Pitino’s & Cigar fail miserably as a staff. He is no longer a Wildcat he is the enemy.

When he is done Coaching at our hated rivals he can ask for forgiveness for this terrible sin. He has tarnished his legacy at UK and will never ever be thought of the same as in the past.

  23. dlamb1954 Says:

We should be happy for Walter that he has this opportunity. We all need to get over Pitino. We have a great coach and program and so does UL. There’s room for both. Duke and UNC seem to be able to exist and compete at highest level. Let’s get ready to beat the Cards for 4th time in a row but still wish McCarty well. If a former UL player could come in and help on our staff I would want him.

  24. Kencats1 Says:

I am not sure why it is that big of a deal with Walter going to U of L. He is just trying to
get into coaching. Coach Pitino is a good coach to learn from. Us U of K fans should be
happy on of our former beloved players is succeeding after his basketball playing career is
    over. Good luck Walter!!

  25. MEWH Says:

Frankly, I don’t care that he has gone there. I WOULD care if we were raiding (won’t happen)
    ex-cardinals for our staff.

  26. MEWH Says:

Every time someone mentions him as a UL assistant, UK’s name will be brought up,
so it behooves us to have alumni in other prgrams.

  27. Rumor has it Says:

LaBradford Smith will be UK’s 3rd Asst coach…………see how stupid that sounds, anyway

  28. MEWH Says:

I like LaBradford, but A)We don’t NEED UL’s players to fill a staff
& B)He’s too busy running a car detail shop in downtown Louisville

  29. catfan Says:

Just more of the Pitino dog and pony show.

  30. BG in KY Says:

I hope Walter does well. He helped us get a championship, isn’t that enough? Maybe a few years from now he will be coaching in the SEC (LSU,lol). I wouldn’t pass up the opportunity either! GO CATS!!!

Hey #23, can’t say that I agree on the Ex, UofL players, but whatever!

  31. Jon O Says:

23, I understand what you are saying and I wish Walter the best too. Its in his best interest to coach there.

However, Pitino going to Louisville was a complete slap in the face to the University of Kentucky. I’ll never forgive or forget that fact that he went there.

  32. Anonymous Says:

#22 How do you sleep at night? People like you are small minded. Good luck Walter.

  33. killerthrees Says:

Pitino wants to be A David Copperfield and try any magic he can, Well truth is Pitino is just a PT Barnum looking like a clown, but the real winner is Walter and continuing basketball career. Thanks for your service as a UK Wildcat. P.S Walter don’t follow him if he takes another NBA job.

Winston Bennett is now coaching at Mid -Continent Bible school in Mayfield KY.

  34. Cardinal Fever Says:

Is it just me, or does anyone else get the impression that Perverted Justice needs to be contacted?

  35. lexslamman Says:

    20.

I care about the academic opportunity more than the athletics, but if sports programs don’t exist to do anything other than excel at their sports (ie: Winning), please enlighten us. UK basketball is much bigger than one state, and in the basketball world, the non-college programs in the state of Kentucky are not producing many players worth recruiting.

  36. lexslamman Says:

Oh, and best wishes to Waltah - I hope he has a successful coaching career - except on the nights that the Wildcats embarass his teams.

  37. Beatle Bum Says:

I think I would have been more concerned to learn that Walter was going to be an assistant for UK. What reason do we have to believe that McCarty can coach or recruit?

Personally, it appears to me that the former Cat that is doing more good for UL is Masiello. Maybe Gillispie should see if Mas wants to be a coach for the Cats.

  38. Glen - Houston Says:

Little brother always wants what BIG BOTHER had!

  39. lexslamman Says:

    42.

Little Stevie isn’t UK material - he might have success recruiting out of the NYC area, but that is as much Pitino’s doing as anything else - and Masiello has serious attitude problems.

  40. Anonymous Says:

does anybody know anything new about the S & C job opening?

  41. Seriulsy Says:

I went to UK when Walter was playing. You won’t meet a nicer guy. I wish him the best of luck at Louisville and hope this
    works at well for him.

BTW–Shame on all of you who think he shouldn’t take that job. How many of you would turn down that kind of opportunity…

  42. lexslamman Says:

    45.

No, but I’ve been thinking more about the last assistant opening:

We seem to have Texas well covered, perhaps someone from another high-talent area would be best - Atlanta, New York, or California are all places that UK has had some luck recruiting from in the past and getting an assistant from one of those areas will keep the pipeline open and expand our recruiting options. Thoughts??

  43. bennie jenkins Says:

I hope Walter succeeds and has a great career at Louisville. I am as true blue as any of you , but when you wish bad things on anyone you must remember what goes around comes around. The only real reason any of you would be against Walter is because you are afraid he might cause us to loose a recruit to Louisville or lose a game to Louisville. I more confidence in Gillispie than that. Will Gillispie lose some games in basketball, yes, but it would be no fun to beat Louisville if they only had a team anyone could beat. No, we should want Louisville to have a strong team, we need to play teams that are hard to beat, that is the only thing that will make US BETTER. We all know the golden rule. DO UNTO OTHERS WHAT YOU WOULD HAAVE THEM DO UNTO YOU.

GOOD LUCK WALTER IN ALL YOU DO, JUST REMEMBER, UK IS THE BEST WIN OR LOSE. Have a great day, all.

  44. Anonymous Says:

i think we should get an assistant familiar with the New York area
so we can get guys like this.
    http://scout.scout.com/a.z?s=75&p=8&c=1&nid=3000087

  45. Beth Says:

Good Luck Walter from a UK fan. I hope you do well even if it is at UofL. Hope you enjoy coaching. Much success you deserve it

  46. bcgobsession Says:

We all need to remember that Rick Pitino was the traitor who slapped us in the face; I can still hear him saying something to the effect of ~Basketball is a business, its my job. I made this decision based on the job– its nothing personal against UK. What a dumbass! He should have known better. Regardless, we can all admit that Pitino is a damn good coach, a great recruiter, and produces some pretty good coaching proteges. (Tubby & Billy D come to mind.) So OF COURSE we should expect to see many former Wilcats becoming assistants at our most hated rival’s program. We just have to wish them luck, b/c one day they’ll start coaching other programs that aren’t Louisville. I sort of like the fact that UL can thank us for our superb blend of coaches & athletes leading their team. Yes, they’ll shout that they stole our legends, but in reality, they KNOW why they have a successful program– ITS LED BY FORMER CATS!!! (and that would irritate me to no end… Don’t blame McCarty, he’s trying to break into coaching, not trying to slap UK in the face. The way I see it is that this all boils down to one shameful person– Rick Pitino, the root of all things GOOD (UK’s re-emergence) and all things EVIL (no need to explain that one)!

  47. Cats Suck Says:

No Final Fours in this century, no College World Series, and no BCS game. You can still call us little brother, but we are now the little brother who is 5 inches taller and kicks the shit out of you. Keep praising your Gaylord trophy; your ass will be smacked in September- AGAIN!

  48. Denny Crum's Hairpiece Says:

I was trying to enjoy a laid back weekend until “ass” above woke
me up. Yeah UL kicked ky’s ass last year in basketball………
    didn’t we?

  49. Anonymous Says:

Pelphrey coached at UF for 8 or 9 years. He’s now at Arkansas. When UF plays Arkansas, I will be rooting for the Gators. When Arkansas plays UK, I will be rooting for Arkansas.

It’s not rocket science. Walter didn’t sleep with your wife or your daughter. He played his heart out for UK AND Pitino. Not for you. If you now hate him, you are so pitiful. You that haven’t done ONE single thing for the program other than to watch the television when a game is on. Or buy a hat or shirt. Many of you talk to ‘tradition’ talk but are clueless about the actual history past Pitino.

  50. Austin Says:

who care about walter McCarty going to UL i think you guys just need something to talk about why is that so bad that Walter McCarty wanted to coach so he went to coach with his college mentor Rick Pitino just because its Louisville you guys want to cry about it get over it nd lets get some real news please

  51. Austin Says:

    49 THANK YOU!!!!!!

  52. 69'Z Says:

49- That’s the attitude I would expect from a UL person. You all have no tradition and your palyers don’t play for the fans and students. At UK the guys love the school, the fans and the coach. I can understand why your guys don’t feel that way about your dirty little school. Condolences.

  53. 69'Z Says:

    players^^^^

  54. Anonymous Says:

#47 Allow me to bread down you what you said…No Final Fours this century…only because West Virgina lost a 28 point lead…College World Series…Who cares about baseball in Kentucky? BCS game…Can you honesty say Louisville would be in a BCS game if it played in the SEC…I think not…every game is against top teams.
You could probably beat Flordia, Georgia, Tennessee, South Carlonia, and LSU, but could you beat them all in the same year?

  55. AceReporter Says:

Walter had dinner last night with masiello at Jeff Ruby’s downtown. He already had his louisville shirt on. He also wanted his steak well done, with a side of A1 sauce.

  56. Dave B Says:

Ace is that you?!! Anybody who orders a well-done steak and a side of A-1 at a place like Ruby’s needs to have his head examined! I got his autograph at Molly’s last night though.

  57. Anonymous Says:

post something new its been 13 hours!!

  58. Matt M Says:

i think its great that Walter has the oppertunity to coach it doesnt matter where it is i still think pitino is a bag of douche

  59. Big Jules Says:

I bet Masiello was up at the bar buying shots for everyone who would take one and make sure that a bunch of chicks were looking at him. That was definitely his tactic at UK. Overheard on more than one accasion him trying to explain to girls that he played for UK only to have to answer the “why are you so short” questions, or “your not tall emough” What a douche

  60. Anonymous Says:

    thank you 54

  61. Rob's hairgel Says:

    It’s a slow day I guess,Here’s a article on Liggins transfer.
    http://blogs.suntimes.com/preps/2007/06/more_on_deandre_liggins_commit .html

  62. ZW Says:

McCarty has the stink of UL on him now and will have it until he leaves the land of dog food silos.

  63. lexslamman Says:

    61.

Good article, sounds like Liggins has both ambition and humility and is drive towards improvement - that is just the kind of attitude this program should be looking for.

  64. lexslamman Says:

    oops… drive = driven

  65. Rex Chapman Says:

Man, next 15 years we can see UL hiring Billy Gillispie after winning three NCAA championships at UK and releasing a not so stellar country album “Swangin’ an’a Sangin’”…

  66. Eric Says:

    True Story:

I was at Wal-Mart at 2:30 in the morning while attending the college of Architecture at UK.

I had to pick up some supplies and I saw there was exactly 3 other people in the store with me.

2 were 300 lb sisters buying the last of the Doritos and the other was Steve Masiello in his pimp gear (read Wife-beater, low shorts and upturned-backwards visor) reading the latest copy of Lowriders.

He is the only Cat I have ever experienced that I felt sorry that he played for us.

  67. valupix Says:

Anyone have a list or link to the many college underclassmen you declared for the NBA draft and went undrafted this year?

  68. valupix Says:

Here is a story, but not a full list…

I’m still searching if antone has a full list.

    http://espn.go.com/dickvitale/060628vitaleundrafted.html

  69. Mike Says:

Matt can you call Zeller, and ask him about his choices.

  70. bigbluecat1 Says:

Well I do wish Walter along and successful career as a coach, I can nor will i wish he luck at Uof L.

  71. billy harrison Says:

I will be absolutely shocked if Clark comes to Kentucky. If Gillispie can get him he can get Monroe.

  72. Anonymous Says:

seriously we have atleast 5 recruits on campus and you havent posted anything for 17 hours

  73. Mike Says:

Clark is not a need, like Miller, and Zeller is. Why do you people like
him? We have Jasper and Portor.

  74. Beatle Bum Says:

#43, I think it would be fun to beat UL each and every year, even if every other team in the country beat UL.

  75. GoWildcats Says:

Stop ur whining everyone. Be proud and Support Walter. Everyone has to get their start somewhere and who better than Slick Rick. Trust me, Walter will always remember which school vaulted him into the NBA. Go Walter.

  76. inside info Says:

Im A huge lifelong KY fan.I wish any of our players luck trying to further there career. If KY could have 40 coaching spots,we would take them all,but we dont.GO BIG BLUE

  77. Doctor Bob Says:

#52, I’m not an UofL fan. Didn’t realize I was showing up as anonymous. The #49 post was mine.

  78. Blue Says:

we know. we could smell the jack assery through the screen.

  79. Lovin_UK Says:

Good luck in your next coaching move, Walter. Just remember that u of l sucks and always will!

  80. Billy Clyde's bottle Says:

I don’t understand why everyone get’s so up in arms…..the fans are way more connected to UK
and UL then the players and coaches are. It’s another job to them….espically seeing as how
they are not even from the state.

  81. Alex Legion Says:

Walter McCarty won an NCAA title at UK, graduated in 4 years (despite having been Prop 48 redshirt his first year), and had a 10 year NBA career. Now he gets a chance to coach under one of the very best active (college) coaches.

  82. Doctor Bob Says:

#78, that was the shit you ate for supper blasting back in your toothless face, boy.

  83. cantwaitfor8 Says:

I am getting hammered for speaking out against Walter on KY.com Am I the only one who realizes he is coaching at the school
    we hate?
