I hope you saw that. Potentially one of the strangest press events I have ever seen, Rick Pitino just stood up in front of the Louisville media and:
1. Went after Karen Sypher publically
2. Went after the media publically, seemingly calling for a boycott of all coverage of his case.
3. Blamed the media for not allowing him to “comfort” his wife
4. Told the media to “go looking” for the truth on the case and do any investigative reporting they wanted (he may regret that)
5. Saying at first he had done “nothing wrong” three times before finally correcting himself about the “one mistake” that he had made.
6. Blaming everyone for focusing on this “on the day Ted Kennedy died.”
7. Telling everyone to stop worrying about this and start “focusing on the economy.”
Wow…those were the rantings of a man who has seemingly lost a bit of control. What I dont think Pitino understands is that the VAST majority of people dont believe Sypher’s allegations. They do care about what you DID and what else you may have done that hasnt come out. That is what the media has reported, and if anything they have erred on the side of protecting you. Take your self-righteousness elsewhere.
And I will close with this…you continue to say you made “one mistake” six years ago. You better hope that ends up continuing to be the case and that no other “mistakes” step forward. You stake your entire reputation and stance on this “one mistake” line…it better be true and no other Karen Syphers exist.
And oh yeah, when you said your lawyer, the FBI and the University didnt want you to talk publically….well now we know why.

He’s lost it. That made things 10x worse. Good point, Matt, on most people not believing her allegations. This didn’t help his cause with public perception and certainly not with the media. UofL’s PR people should be fired for letting him do this.
Maybe he’s tired of NFL coaches getting all the Coors Light commercials.

Why is he complaining? He’s a prominent figure and borderline celebrity. I didn’t see him piss and moan when he was getting all the coverage for the good things he did at UK and UL. Guess what Ricky boy, you asked for it, now you’re getting it. This sort of thing comes with the territory and you have to deal with it. If you had kept “Lil Ricky” in your pants and this never would have happened. NOONE feels sorry for you! Moron…..

Forde said it was an emotional response he had after local media aired some video at noon news of Sypher’s testimony to the police. His wife was very upset.
Forde said he perpetuated his own problem with this press conference. Said it has been fairly quiet on the national news front for Pitino and this press conference throws him right back into the media.

Kudos to Forde–Didn’t hear the whole thing but it sounded as if he was being a bit critical of Rick and questioning “If you want the story to die, then call a presser to keep it going?” He said that Rick knew he was going to take some hits in the media but why he would want to perpetuate it when it was someone slowing down is the wrong way to approach it. He said, there was one story about the tapes and Rick had made it a bigger story by calling the presser.
If we are going to blast him for his coverage, we have to give him some credit when he is critical.

I guess I can understand how he feels about the whole one mistake thing. I once made a mistake too. It was an answer on an algebra exam as I recall. It’s tough for us otherwise perfect people to make a mistake. Pitino deserves our sympathy. Y’know?

Shortly after the end, he fielded a couple questions off camera. Someone asked him if this was going to affect his team’s chances of making the post-season and he said, “PLAYOFFS?!!? Playoffs? I just hope we win another game! Playoffs??”….then they asked him how this could happen and he responded “I’M A MAN!! I’m 50!! I HATE THESE NEWSPAPERS!! IT’S ALL GARBAGE!!”….then he was asked about Karen before he cut off the reporter…“SHE IS WHO WE THOUGHT SHE WAS! IF YOU’RE GONNA CROWN HER THEN CROWN HER ASS! WE LET HER OFF THE HOOK!!!”

I agree with Matt’s take in that Pitino had better be damn sure there is no one else out there and there were no other instances of infidelity…all it would take is just one out there who decides that she wants her “15 minutes”…and thinks that somehow she could cash in on coming forward…any credibility that Rick has left would be shot all to hell after he kept on declaring over and over that it was just that one mistake…and maybe it was…who am I to say otherwise? But if someone else did come forward…oh man…all hell would break loose then…
