[Moderated by Matt Jones]

There are not one, but TWO positions available at UK. There is the 3rd assistant to join Cox and Cyprien under Billy as well as the Director of Basketball Operations. I think many have assumed that Howard or the dancing guy from A/M were going to be the Ops guy, but that is not what I hear….at least if they decide to hire two of the names that are thrown out there.
Rotnei Clarke told me yesterday that he would absolutely be interested if UK offered him a scholarship. Not only do I think that would make Warren a virtual lock for UK, but I think Rotnei is going to be one of the best PG’s in this class. He is not the best PURE shooter in the class (Matt Roth is, but he’s ONLY a spot up shooter), but he is the best shooter off the dribble, off the screen, off the floor and from the parking lot. He has great balance and is used to getting hammered and still making the play. He is not a defensive liability as some suggest either….it’s not his strongest point, but he can defend. Some mention his height, but he is a legit 6′ 1 in shoes (I’ve stood next to him many times) and he has two cousins that were his height at the same points in his development…they are both 6′5″ now. UK has not been in contact other than letters, but there are those at UK who like his play and are likely to enter the Clarke sweepstakes very soon.
Jamychal Green is the PF that I’d most like to have. He is only recently 16 years old and has a motor and the moves to be elite. He is attending UK’s elite camp in just about 10 days along with AAU team member Andrew Steele (Ronald’s brother). Look for UK to start on him hard.
Samardo Samuels is the player that I think may be the surprise name for UK in the near future. He has not been mentioned in regards to UK, but that could change quick. Keep an eye out for this guy. He is a top 5 Center/PF.
KC Miller played extremely well with Team Texas this past weekend and looked great for ANY class…forget the fact that he is a 2010 player. For some reason, I got the impression that I was watching the future PG for the University of Kentucky. He is very good friends with GJ Vilarino and GJ wants him to follow him to UK.
Xavier Gibson played his first basketball since November when he suffered 3 broken bones in his right hand. He was rusty and a little winded at times, but still, you could smell the talent from the 6′10″ Garnett style player (style, not talent). Gibson is a top 15 player and will be back in top form in no time. His team, the Georgia Blazers, won the 17 year old tournament title at the Memorial Day Classic in Nashville this past weekend.
I can’t imagine a scenario in which UK gets Deandre Liggens to play for the Wildcats. Liggens has been involved with Kansas for a LONG time and has a great relationship with them. Additionally, those close to Liggens are very close to Coach Calipari and a few other coaches on Liggens’ list. Many see Liggens as the “flavor of the day” and he seems to be getting lots of credit for recent good play, but I do not think he is a “must have” player for UK. I would take him in a second, but I wouldn’t lose sleep if we missed on him, which I am pretty sure we will.

Marc is Green, your pick for UK. Can we get him. Looks like a star.
May 30th, 2007 at 9:51 pm
marc who does J.GREEN mind you of good work marc.
May 30th, 2007 at 9:52 pm
Marc, Who do you think are possible candidates for the UK coaching jobs? Are any of the recruits you mentioned listing UK as their leader, or are any UK leans? Do you know anything about the Calasan recruitment?
Sorry for asking so many questions, I’m just extremely excited right now about UK and recruiting.
Thanks.
May 30th, 2007 at 9:53 pm
nice stuff marc
May 30th, 2007 at 9:53 pm
Marc, will the UK elite camp be open to the public and if so how do I sign up? Second, I personally would like to see Happy Osbourne as the third assistant–what are your thoughts on him?
May 30th, 2007 at 9:56 pm
Mark, what’s the latest on Lucas and Patterson?
May 30th, 2007 at 9:56 pm
go cats!!!!!!!!!!!!!
May 30th, 2007 at 9:56 pm
Thanks for the info Marc. I like how you work in who you feel we have a chance with rather than just saying who we’ve offered. Keep it comin’ man. ANd love you’re site.

duke sucks!!!!!!!
May 30th, 2007 at 9:59 pm
This recruiting stuff is like a drug, the more i see the more i want. Its gets better
every day, I had never heard of this J. Green from Alabama until today and now his name
is all over the place. lets get him! it might be possible to have too many guards running around
but you can never have too many big guys!
May 30th, 2007 at 10:00 pm

May 30th, 2007 at 10:01 pm
#14 nice lineup. Top ten baby
May 30th, 2007 at 10:03 pm
is it pronounced Jay-Michael?
May 30th, 2007 at 10:08 pm
I think I read J. Green is really hoping to play with his good friend Steele or if not Steele, then a last name that begins with B. I do know his friend isn’t as good as him (as far as rankings), but I do believe he’s a 4 star (not certain though). Bama is definitely after him hard.
May 30th, 2007 at 10:08 pm
He’s comparing schools that they both have on their list, but he isn’t knocking Kentucky out yet either.
May 30th, 2007 at 10:10 pm
I heard that Kobe wants to be traded, so I used the ESPN.com trade machine to come up with this potential offer we could make: Ramel Bradley, Ramon Harris, Jared Carter, and Dwight Perry for Kobe and Vlad Rodmanavich. What do you think Marc?
May 30th, 2007 at 10:13 pm
I just checked my info again from TCP. I think I had J. Green confused with another recruit (there’s too many to keep up with right now). Sorry. He isn’t the one wanting to play with his buddy. He is the one that stated location is huge. He doesn’t want to play too far from home, so our chances with him are probably slim. And Bama is after him big time. Also, he IS a 2008 recruit according to TCP.
May 30th, 2007 at 10:16 pm
yes KY001 you had me for a minute
May 30th, 2007 at 10:18 pm
21.) I think he is wanting to play in the south, so I think we are still fine with him. He will be in the SEC or ACC. Well at least that is what I read somewhere, I actually have no friggen idea lol.
May 30th, 2007 at 10:20 pm
Marc do you like Tubby pizza
May 30th, 2007 at 10:28 pm
Well the good news is he’s coming to the Elite camp. So he’ll at least get to see the facilities and have more time with our coach before he ever makes a decision. I certainly hope we get him.
May 30th, 2007 at 10:33 pm
Any one have dates and times for the elite camp?
May 30th, 2007 at 10:34 pm
are these all 08 guys?
May 30th, 2007 at 10:41 pm
#26 good question. Are the elite camps open to the public?
May 30th, 2007 at 10:41 pm
Rotnei Clarke is a point guard? I didn’t realize that. That makes getting a Clarke/Warren combo even more appetizing. Better than getting two SGs. More versatility.
And you say Samardo Samuels can play center? He is only listed at 6′9″. That would be great if he could play center beside Patterson, though.
May 30th, 2007 at 10:42 pm
Wow do I love This stuff! There is no offseason in UK basketball!
May 30th, 2007 at 10:42 pm
Marc, so you think it might eventually be between Zeller and Samuels for the pivot slot?
May 30th, 2007 at 10:44 pm
Elite Camp is closed to public, media, everyone… as most camps of this sort are.
May 30th, 2007 at 10:46 pm
#32 even me?
May 30th, 2007 at 10:50 pm
It looks like Marc thinks Samuels, will be a CAT.
May 30th, 2007 at 11:08 pm
ESPN says Billy D to stay at FL.
May 30th, 2007 at 11:10 pm
i hope we get willie warren, darius miller, and tyler zeller. then if a scholarship opens up maybe rodnie clark, chris singleton, romero osby, tony woods, scotty hopson, bud mackey, draymond green, or jamycal green. who ever signs first. i wood persoonally love to have tony woods over zeller, but gillispie is looking for a up and down game so i don’t thik he would be as good of a fit as zellers wood. i just can’t wait for a commitment.
May 30th, 2007 at 11:14 pm
Good stuff, Marc. I’m feeling pretty confident that we will have added 3 excellent basketball players by this time next year. That’s a big difference from theprevious year; as far as confidence goes anyway. You and Matt are quickly becoming the Dynamic Duo of UK b=ball recruiting………….Now you know someone is going to photoshop that. Without the masks of course. Thanks!
May 30th, 2007 at 11:22 pm

Good article by Pat Forde on Espn about Pelphrey. He is truly one of the heroes of Kentucky Basketball and i wish him the best of luck at Arkansas. I would love to get back to the 90’s style rivalry we had with them. That was the game you looked forward to every year on the schedule including one the best games ever in the ‘95 SEC tournament. I would recommend putting the last few minutes of that game on here for our viewing pleasure.

a little job, is not KENTUCKY BASKETBALL. UK BB IS BIGGGGGGG
May 31st, 2007 at 1:40 am
68–Good call on the Benson kid. Forgot about him. The roster from LHL doesn’t mention him. Wonder if that means he’s out? They just posted that today, but it says it was posted April 26. PPat didn’t commit until 5-16….So they are full of it or forgot to fix the date. Or they are just a bunch of liberal liars. I prefer that definition myself.
May 31st, 2007 at 2:11 am
Interesting, Samuels guardian told Dave Telep that he could decide after his UofL visit on June 8-10.
http://scouthoops.scout.com/2/647518.html
He can also wait until the fall to decide.
May 31st, 2007 at 2:59 am
Man, recruiting is so much fun to follow now! Every time you look up there’s another top 100 kid adding UK to their list. As Roscoe P. Coletrain might have said…..”I love it! I love it! Ah-goooooo-goooooooo-gooooooo!”
May 31st, 2007 at 6:36 am
6-3 Matt Roth from Washington IL is a superb outside shooter who will break several FG shooting records in Illinois this year.
May 31st, 2007 at 7:17 am
Clarke would be great (for some reason I doubt we get him). Thanks for the report Marc!!
May 31st, 2007 at 8:39 am
I LOVE UK Recruiting now ! It’s amazing how the tide has turned under Billy G ! I’m going out on a limb and if I’m wrong then so be it… But I project that Coach Gillispie will get UK to the sweet sixteen this year with a legit chance of making the elite eight ! I Really believe in his system and ability to coach and recruit.
May 31st, 2007 at 9:09 am
UK needs to make up a ton of ground on Samardo Samuels to be a legit contender. A few others (North Carolina, Connecticut, Louisville, etc.) have been on him longer. I don’t think UK is anywhere near the leader for him. Yet.
May 31st, 2007 at 9:23 am
What about the S&C Coach? With Holsopple gone that will make 3 more new hires, right?
May 31st, 2007 at 9:25 am
79, talked about on here a while back. Melvin Turpin is the leader for that job.
May 31st, 2007 at 9:26 am
1) Matt you all do a great job
2) If you say something stupid expect to get made fun of. If you dont want to be made fun of dont day anything stupid.
3) Im sick of everyone complaining about Kentucky players not being on the roster or there not being enough of them. Just three years ago we had something like 5-6 players from Kentucky and they didnt get the job done. Here’s the deal. Im a lifelong Kentuckian and I dont care about where someone is from on the roster. I want to win championships and if kids from Kentucky cant get it done bring in someone who does. When kids with the Kentucky jersey on win, spectators think of Kentucky’s greatness not Derrick Jasper from Paso Robles, they think Derrcik Jasper UK player. When Tay is indtroduced for Detroit its not Tayshuan Prince out of Compton its Tayshuan Prince out of the University of Kentucky. So deal with it. Stop complaining about the coaches recruiting.
May 31st, 2007 at 9:30 am
#14-That looks like a pretty good line-up. However, I thought
P Patterson was a 4. Stevenson is the weak point in your line-up
I think. He really didn’t impress me much last year. He has little or
no offensive abilities and only looked good on defense against those
early season non-conference opponents. We need a good offensive minded
true center it looks like to me. I wonder what Billy G-spot is planning
as far as recruiting the 5 position for 08. Any news?
May 31st, 2007 at 9:37 am
I really don’t think Carter, Stevenson, or the project coming in next
year can do the job at the center. I’m sure BCG is on top of it though.
Oh yea, thanks for the info guys… solid stuff!
May 31st, 2007 at 9:45 am
College Card this is Dave Telep take on the Samuals recruitment after he spoke to Samuals guardian and Director of Jamaica Basketball Steve Johnston.
“Kentucky has made a late push,” Steve Johnston, Samuels guardian and Vice President of Jamaica Basketball Development, Inc told Scout.com. “They’ve contacted us. Coach Cox contacted me and I’ve had some conversations with Coach Gillispie. It’s Kentucky and it’s not a school to be ignored.”
However, it could be too late to make a serious dent into what is an established recruitment.
The situation could go one of two ways. Samuels, who is scheduled to visit Louisville unofficially June 8-10, could decide within the next month. The big man could also opt to wait until the fall to make his choice

May 31st, 2007 at 9:47 am
Thats right that we arent a school to be ignored. Its good to see the respect is returning.
May 31st, 2007 at 9:49 am
I just noticed that Zeller is leaving his list at 9. Does that mean UNC is out?
May 31st, 2007 at 9:50 am
Todays edition of HOOPS.com has Willie Warren committed to Mississippi. Any comments about whether this is correct?
May 31st, 2007 at 9:52 am
Thats Hoops Report.com
May 31st, 2007 at 9:56 am
thats incorrect. Ole Miss has another guy with the last name Warren that has committed. But its not Willie.

69′Z the list of schools Tyler Zeller gave out is the following:
Purdue, Notre Dame, Iowa, Iowa State, Kansas, Kentucky, Tennessee and North Carolina.
http://kansas.scout.com/2/647924.html
May 31st, 2007 at 10:08 am
And Indiana for Zeller.
May 31st, 2007 at 10:15 am
Okay I get UK, UT, UNC, KU, IU but the others on that list are making me scratch my head. If you were a recruuit and had those 5 schools recruiting you would you really consider Iowa St. etc. You arent going to win a championship at any of those schools because you are going to be surrounded by players who arent up to your level.
May 31st, 2007 at 10:28 am
81–Don’t know who you are aiming that last comment at, about KY kids on the roster. I wasn’t complaining, just pointing out a factoid. I will agree with you up until I see Lofton stick another 3 in our face, or remembering all those KY boys that killed us playing for Vandy. We should have the best in KY at the best school in KY, IMHO. And the best from elsewhere as well. But I was not making a comment on the current situation. Have we ever had three guys from the same city on the team at the same time? Especially a city like Detroit? Just interesting.
May 31st, 2007 at 10:43 am
94, you never know what kind of connection these kids have at any school to pull them
them that way. Or, maybe they want to go to a lessor school because they can shine that
much more. Maybe they just want to be the BMOC.
May 31st, 2007 at 10:53 am
We have missed out on a lot of good in state recruits in recent years
though. We can complain about the recruiting for that. Half of these
players that leave the state to go somewhere else said that Kentucky
never even offered. In the good ole days, it was pretty much a given
that we were going to get the best from our state. The best in state
player we have had recently was Rondo, and that was only because
Louisville passed on him. There is a top 100 player in to ‘09 class
I believe, that has already committed to Miss St. He is not even
considering Kentucky. That don’t make sense to me. These in state
guys should be the easiest recruits for us to get, and the recruiters
have been blowing it.
May 31st, 2007 at 10:56 am
it’s DEEP THOUGHTS by jack handy, not random thoughts.
May 31st, 2007 at 11:06 am
Samuels AAU Coach will either be the 3rd assistant or Dir of Basketball Ops if he can bring Samuels. Book it!
May 31st, 2007 at 11:09 am
98….There isn’t a bigger Deep thoughts fan than me…it was a joke, obviously.
Samardo will either come to UK, or not consider us as all….lol. Things will move quickly I think. We’ll see how it goes.
mm
May 31st, 2007 at 11:10 am
Hell man, let’s say sweet 16 is the minimum age to follow recruits…like voting at 18 and drinking at 21.
May 31st, 2007 at 11:27 am
Anonymous, Thanks
May 31st, 2007 at 11:32 am
Red, just wait and see ‘08. We’ll see who’s who.
May 31st, 2007 at 11:54 am
95 Besides chris lofton ( and I contend that his situation is extemely unique and is really no ones fault tha he isnt at UK becuase EVERYBODY IN THE NCAA missed on him ) who do we really miss. Surely not Ross Neltner from highlands? He isnt a UK caliber player.
I dont know why we didnt get Bud Mackey (IU recruit) but Scotty Hopson who I think you are referring to reportedly has a really bad attitude and we would not want him. A lot of people come on here and complain about recruiting in Kentucky but they have no clue what they are talking about and only speak in generalitites. If you are going to argue why UK should recruit more instate players come with some facts and know the whole deal behind Chris Lofton’s recruitment.
May 31st, 2007 at 11:55 am

May 31st, 2007 at 12:08 pm
ANARCHY IN THE UK !!!!!!!!!!!!! NO TO CENSORSHIP !!!!!!!!!!!
May 31st, 2007 at 12:47 pm
97.
The issue is that there is little to no talent in Kentucky high-school athletics. To compete with the rest of the country, we need to get most of our players from other states.
May 31st, 2007 at 2:13 pm
UK has no chance with Samuels, so keep dreaming. He will commit by July probably, and Uk has never been on his list. Not once. He favors UofL, UNC, and UCONN. And UK will get him? Good one.
May 31st, 2007 at 2:21 pm
Easy now. Gillispie’s a good recruiter and could come on strong with Samuels, but I doubt UK has any real chance. Guys like Calhoun, Pitino, and Williams have a good record when it comes to recruiting players from the Northeast.
May 31st, 2007 at 2:27 pm
104, 107- Guys, I’m not under the influence that we can form a complete
roster with in state players. I agree about Lofton wasn’t a extremely
highly recruited player out of highschool. But, he was definately
good, and D1 material. Kentucky fans like to see there own on the team.
Richie Farmer wasn’t very highly recruited either, but now he is a
fan legend.
