Now, I don’t want to go and put words in the great Jody Demling’s mouth, but I’m inferring from his latest blog entery taht he tends to believe the behind-the-scenes talk down in Orlando that Ohio big man Adreian Payne, who has publically narrowed his list to five, privately is considering only two schools. Luckily for Cats’ fans, UK is one of those schools, with Bob Huggins’ Mountaineer squad being the second. Here is his Freedom Friday blurb in its entirety, so you can make your own assumption:
Now, how about Adreian Payne? The Dayton, Ohio, center has been the subject of a lot of attention this week talking about perhaps a commitment to Kentucky? There has been a lot of behind-the-scenes chatter regarding the 6-foot-10 Payne and here’s what I can share. Payne has narrowed his list to five schools and UK has made a major play for his services. Many folks actually believe it’s down to a pair of schools. But he’s a kid that is shy and sometimes very hard to read when talking to him about the whole college recruiting process. I think UK has put themselves into a good position, but I don’t expect a commitment anytime really soon. Trust me, West Virginia is the other school that is right there and Bob Huggins has put a lot of time into this and is not going down without a major battle. It should be fun to see it play out.
Payne, as Demling noted, has been the subject of the “commitment is nearing” talk over the past week or so and opinions seem to vary on the validity of the statement. However, after watching Payne in action with these two beautiful brown eyes, I can say with confidence that Payne is a player that would fit in very well in Lexington. Rivals’ #4 center in the the 2010 class is thin physically at this point, but he has length and athleticism and gets after it inside like he’s much heavier. From what I saw, he played every play with emotion and really looked to be making an impact on both ends of the floor. I was much more impressed with Payne than I was with his teammate Jared Sullinger, the #1 center in the class.
Will anything come of this latest development and how soon will we know more? It’s tough to say. But, like Jody said, it’s going to be fun to watch.

July 31st, 2009 at 2:46 pm
Huggins is like Pearl, a good recruiter, but a horrible bench coach.
July 31st, 2009 at 2:56 pm
Pearl a good recruiter? if he was a good recruiter he would still have selby.
Pearl came into UT with good players now that its his players he can’t do crap.
he was lucky that KY was down these past 4yrs or he wouldn’t have these 4 reg
season titles. yea reg. season because he sucks when it comes tourny time.

July 31st, 2009 at 3:41 pm
14/15. Does k*** mean kiss? Why would you need to bleep that out? Otherwise I’m struggling to figure that one out. Also I tend to disapprove of some ad banners, but I believe you are being incredibly over-sensitive.

HAHA! I knew I could get her/it to comment again! Seriously, you start pouting and saying you’ll never comment again, and then hang around to see the responses. What else do you expect? Congratulations on your future as an over-bearing soccer mom. Your mini-van awaits.
July 31st, 2009 at 3:48 pm
11, I have no idea what you’re talking about. I deleted no comments. Your Evony comment is on the other thread.
July 31st, 2009 at 3:51 pm
i think this would be a huge get for the cats because with perry, pat, and probably cousins leaving we need some bigs to help out orton
July 31st, 2009 at 3:51 pm
I thought you were NEVER going to post here again?
July 31st, 2009 at 3:52 pm
23 - I cannot believe you deleted her comment either since it looks like you didn’t.
July 31st, 2009 at 3:53 pm
I hope you all realize how big this is if we can land Payne. It wasn’t that long ago that we had ZERO shot at landing this kid.
Just shows you how quickly Calipari can make up for lost time.
He won’t have any lost time (changing schools) for the 2011 class. Wait until you see how good our 2011 class ends up being.
July 31st, 2009 at 3:55 pm
Orton, Leslie, and Payne and the ability in Cal’s offense to play guys like Miller at the 4 spot if needed, will give us a very strong frontcourt in 2010. Orton might be All-American caliber by his soph year as well
July 31st, 2009 at 4:00 pm
27. How many spots are we going to have for 2011? As of right now it looks like only Harrelson’s scholarship will open up. I’m guessing Cal either saves some spots next year, or he anticipates having a few more 1 and dones. Either way is fine with me, so long as the talent keeps on coming.
July 31st, 2009 at 5:32 pm
i think cal will get knight which would be a probable one and done and with the reports of bledsoe who knows. pat might stay another year with the love he has for this school. some of those equations would make us have a nice recruiting class but a lot has to happen.
July 31st, 2009 at 6:43 pm
First of all, don’t count WVU out just yet for this kid. Huggins is a good recruiter no doubt… And as far as I’m concerned has no ethics whatsoever, so he might be promising this kid the world.
Second, as for players leaving next year, as of now it looks like this… Wall, Pat, Stevenson, and Cousins. In a perfect world we fill those with 1. Knight 2. Payne 3. Leslie 4. Lamb… And your wild card is Shelby (who by the sounds of things is probably the easiest get out of all of them).
