I haven’t seen if this was posted or not over the weekend since I totally distanced myself from KSR (until I saw Bomani on the A&E Michael Jackson special), but this is a very good writeup regarding secondary violations in the SEC and how Rich Brooks has had enough. The fiery grandfather of the SEC shared some strong words about these violations with the Knoxville News over the weekend and even subtly turned the eyes on another school:
“I won’t say what school but I just watched something on Youtube that is clearly a secondary violation by a member school in our conference,” Brooks said. “If they don’t self report it, somebody else is going to report it.
“I think there’s maybe a little too much gamesmanship going on right now.”
I have no idea what he is referencing, but I’m hoping it’s another Kiffin violation. Despite not out-rightly naming the school or the video, the coach of the only team who hasn’t had a secondary violation since December of 2008said that the NCAA better step it up and enforce the rules with harsher punishments. Brooks says that the teams making these violations are at a decided advantage and, without threat of any sort of major repercussion, they keep doing them. Ballsy words from the baddest coach in the SEC.
But, I’d be lying to you if I didn’t point out the non-Brooks portion of the story that caught my attention. I almost hate myself for not being tuned in better with the football team and I’m quite disappointed I found this out from a Tennessee website, but..well…here you go:
Kentucky also relies on two former Central High School standout players: kicker Lones Seiber, who is 15 points shy of becoming Kentucky’s all-time leading scorer, and fullback A.J. Nance, who is one of Kentucky’s best special teams performers.
Read that again. Lones Seiber is only 15 points away from being UK’s all-time leading scorer. I guess I can understand it, seeing as he’s played on some very high-scoring teams, but I’d be lying if I didn’t tell you that it caught me completely off-guard to find that a guy whose career has had more ups and downs than a box set of Breaking Bonaduce will likely be at the top of the UK scoring list. That’s an accomplishment no boy should cry about.

And heres hoping Lones blows that record out of the water. We can’t afford a up and down season from that guy this year. I have a feeling as good as our Defense is we will be in a lot of close games.

Wow. Well, hopefully Lones has an outstanding season. We can’t afford to leave any points on the field.

I had no idea he was that close to breaking the record, but good for him.

Yeah Beisner, so Im not the only one who saw Bomani on A&E titled as a “CULTURAL CRITIC?” He has so much insight on MJ and Quincy Jones- it was almost like he was there to witness everything!!!! I couldnt help but chuckle at some of his comments- and here we thought he was a sports critic- hes just a well-rounded individual I guess.HA!

Considering he’s played so much, despite his ups and downs, it’s not surprising. Pretty much all of the top-20 all-time leading scorers in the NFL are kickers. When you’re guarenteed points pretty much everytime the team gets in scoring position, it’s not that unusual to see that many kickers leading teams.
Here’s to hoping he breaks it by a lot this season…

I feel like thank you letters to Andre Woodson, Keenan Burton, Jacob Tamme, and Stevie Johnson are in order.

That little nugget re Seiber speaks volumes about the history of UK football.

I saw Bomani as well he was great.
June 30th, 2009 at 2:35 pm

Central High School Sucks.
Halls High, Class of ‘96!!
Also, I think papaw (term of endearment, don’t worry) was talking about something that happened at Auburn, not UT (shocking, I know…)
June 30th, 2009 at 2:50 pm
What does the front of the Seidber girl look like?
June 30th, 2009 at 2:51 pm
12- what happened at Auburn

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA Listenin to the Interview with Carl Henry. He is meeting with his sons today to discuss it, but he has heard that they are wanting to go to UK now since their mom says that she is willing to go to Kentucky now, thanks to all the drama at Kansas.
June 30th, 2009 at 2:55 pm
I think this is what he’s talking about. AU never reported it, even though they looked in to it.

14 - I think he is referring to some of the “Big Cat Weekend” antics; all of which I understand Auburn has already self reported. Otherwise, I haven’t a clue and am as curious as you

Also, the Henry family is reason 1 for what’s wrong with college bball. Deadspin has a great post on this ’saga.’ UK fans, do you really want this at UK? It’s another Alex Legion all over again.

I thought I saw AU reported the pep rally. here is a link

I stand corrected…but all the chatter over Brook’s comment has led me to believe he was talking about Auburn….
June 30th, 2009 at 3:05 pm
He still may have been. Its sad that every team in the SEC except UK has reported secondary violations in the last 6 months.
June 30th, 2009 at 3:08 pm
Many of the NCAA rules are asinine. Still bravo to Brooks, Sanders, Phillips, et al for being clean. After Hal Mummee, you needed a clean guy.
June 30th, 2009 at 3:12 pm
WOW!! Thats shocking about Seiber! I love Rich Brooks!
June 30th, 2009 at 3:14 pm
Agreed macon_volfan… the number of secondary violations each year in all sports under the NCAA umbrella is ridiculous. With the spread of at-our-fingertips media, it wouldn’t surprise me if it only gets worse.
Glad we’re clean for now.
