Worst Final Four Ever?

by @ 11:32 pm. Filed under Blue Blooded Opinions

I dont know about you, but watching the games tonight, it occurred to me that this may be the worst NCAA Tournament ever. When you look back at this tournament, what will you remember? Maybe the Duke-VCU finish…..the Ohio State three against Xavier, the decently played UNC-Georgetown game? It really seems like the NCAA Committee did such a good job that we havent had any true amazing upsets and the favorites tend to win the games with ease.

And even if the tournament as a whole hasnt been bad, the games tonight were just AWFUL! Neither game was really close and the stupid college basketball 5 foul rule made both games unwatchable. We want to see Oden v. Hibbert…..not Oden v. Hibbert on the bench with foul trouble. The same thing happened to Affalo in the Florida game, as the referees whistle caused the first half to be akin to a November preseason NIT game. What we have left is a Florida team going for its second straight title versus an Ohio State team that should have lost in the second round. I simply dont care.

But who will win…..well the head says Florida…..they are vastly superior, have been rolling throughout the tournament (like last year missing the best teams in the Big Dance (no Kansas or UNC) and are on a mission. However the last two teams to go for a repeat title were both from the SEC, both went into the game as a favorite and both were upset. Plus this is a repeat of the football title game (thus shattering the former barrier of one program schools), and in that game the supposed inferior team won…..maybe this game will make up for it.

Either way, two more days before we can get close to finding an end to the coaching search…..

i dont think we are going to like the results of the coaching search.

how do you leave a school when you have won 2 National Championships
    in a row?

I just dont see it happening.

  2. Toffer Says:

perfect time to go when he loses 6-7 players off his current team. my sources say it’s between Few and Wright….

  3. JKW1974 Says:

I think we should all cheer very hard for Ohio State.

What happened to Jay Wright? Any word on him lately?

I think Plan B is Barnes, which would be ok after everyone gets over the disappointment of Billy D not coming here. He has proven he can recruit and win. A place like UK might be what he need to get into play for the big prize.

  4. JKW1974 Says:

#2…I would vastly prefer Wright. What do you hear? Matt…any word?

  7. Han Says:

What’s with the hating on the Five Foul rule? You think the NBA 6 foul is better? Or would you prefer there not be a real deterrent to mugging people throughout the game? What to do if no foulouts? Make every foul intentional and shoot 2?

Anyhow, Florida has to be the favorite to win again. That said, OSU will probably get lucky and win. I predict the turning point is when Noah punctures a lung from beating on his own chest.

  8. somervillain Says:

    Ouch Rick Barnes.
    Pay more for Billy please.

  9. Han Says:

By the way - everyone remember that tomorrow is April Fool’s Day, so believe absolutely nothing you hear all day. Period.

  10. sss Says:

Han- who do you think our next coach is?

  11. chitowncatfan Says:

ok… anyone else hear the past tense in the Donovan post game interview when he was talking about his relationship with foley?
“The relationship I’ve had…… have, with Jeremy Foley has been terrific.”

I didnt get to see it, but the catspause boards are talking about it.

  12. Smacky Says:

Tom Gray posts anonymously because everyone hates him so much. Priceless.

Hey kids, he’s Gustyfelines at KSR free board!

  13. UKWildcat831 Says:

Hey guys, the assistant Athletic Director to UK men’s bball, Linda Carmack, spoke to my class on Friday. After class, I asked her if she had any info on who the next coach would be and she said, “Well I cant say anything, but I’ll give you a hint. His name rhymes with Bonovan.” I am not joking cuz I would not put my credibility (for what its worth) on the line. This is the 1st time Ive been on a compouter since then, which is the reason for not posting this as soon as I wanted to…Unless the championship game has an effect on BD’s decision, he is ours for the taking.

  14. chitowncatfan Says:

13…. and let april fools day begin….. Im officially taking the day off from all of these boards now. Until Monday…

  15. YankeeCpt (Jay) Says:

I know it sounds simple- but a lot of those records for the coach outcomes of where they are. I know there are exceptions.

Without checking for stats, Texas was a blip before Barnes. He is the one who has made them as good as they are. You have to look at what they have done with what they had. Billy Donovan is another- made his own house. Tubby is lucky to have that. He is that good because Kentucky made him that good.

As for the tourney- Stripes baby. It is one thing to clobber someone… entirely something else with all these “knickle-dimers”. Teams were top heavy this year. They said that before tourney started. Half the convo was the top 8 teams were much better than those outside. Didnt expect much.

As much as I would like to hear “Kentucky has selected…” as their next head coach, everyday right now is Selection Sunday. BUT BIGGER!
What goes down now will effect YEARS!
This is a GREAT time to be a Kentucky FAN!

    GO BIG BLUE!

  19. Les Says:

There have been some pretty wretched, ugly games. However, the first Saturday of the tournament, to me, was one of the best, most memorable days of the NCAA tournament ever. Of the eight games, it seemed like 5 of them went to OT, and they all went down to the wire. The only “disappointments” of that day were the “marquee” matchups that CBS set up for us to end the night.

  20. Crow Says:

Seymore, you need to learn how to read before you start “reporting” things.

Matt, in your Dick Vitale thread you have a racial slur in post #97 that needs immediate attention.

  21. Crow Says:

As for this thread, I agree it has been the most boring tournament ever. The reason is they kept out too many small school teams and they should have put Butler somewhere else besides in the Florida bracket.

  22. Bryan Says:

2- Few is not coming here. He’s lived in the west his entire life, has no ties to KY and cannot be higher that plan F or G in Mitch’s forecast.

Plus Lute Olsen is 70. The man cannot coach forever. All Few needs is 3-5 more years at the top of the WAC and he is a shoe-in for the #2 program in the west, AZ.

Few to UK would be the upset of the century on many many levels.

  23. pekingcat Says:

I like that all other coaching positions are taking a back seat to THE coaching position. It is the only one anyone is talking about. I think the boring tourny adds to that. What a brilliant way to get us back in the spotlight when everyone is still watching bball…should have been planned…

  24. Dr. Bob Says:

I hear that all but Brewer come back. Patterson signs with UF. The #1 recruiting class. Another NC. UK has never done three????

  25. Chuck Alexinis Says:

I have said all along……..if we fired Tubby….who would want? We are in a now win situation if BD does not take the job…..he is really the only consensus choice amongst most fans…….we need to be prepared for a no answer and support the guy that does come……even if it is Barnes or Crean…..because no one is knocking down our door right now.

  26. JACKKAT Says:

WORSTE TOURNEY EVER–NAAAHH–JUST SCRIPTED LIKE MANY OF THE OTHERS!
    VANDERBILT GETS TOTALLY SCREWED!
THE PLAY ON THE FLOOR IS EXCEEDED IN IT’S INEPTITUDE ONLY
BY THE OFFICIATING–WITH THE BLOCK/CHARGE THAT THE OFFICIAL
ABSOLUTELY REFUSED TO CALL AGAINST ODEN WAS THE TURNING POINT!

THIS THING WAS PLANNED FROM DAY #1!
BUT HELL–I’M STILL RESEARCHING THE “HOSE JOB” WESTERN KENTUCKY GOT IN 1966

  27. Dr. Bob Says:

I’m going to try logic now. I know UK basketball. Was an usher as a boyscout at MC. Please listen. BD is not coming to UK. It’s not money. The UFAA brings in $35 million more than your athletic association. You cannot outbid us. BD also realises the temporal limitations of your ‘tradition’. 18 year olds don’t care about Rupp or Joe B in 1978. UF will have two in back-to-back years and three Final Fours in the past 7 years. UK has ZERO.

    BD stays at UF.

    What’s plan B?

  28. Papel_Hygenico Says:

The games were horrible. The refs were attrocious. For nearly a half, neither UCLA nor Florida could throw it in the ocean. And let’s be honest. Although Collison may have been the best guard on the floor, UCLA’s only possible chance of winning was a huge game from Affalo, who mostly rode the pine.

  29. Billy Packer Says:

When the hated Kentucky Wildcats played The ACC Great and Powerful North Carolina Tarheels I made the comment that UK’s style of play was BORING, and that the game was hard to watch.

But when OSU and Georgetown play a similar game, it is tough and hard-nosed college basketball at it’s finest.

The truth is, that I hate UK and everything it stands for. The ACC and Big Ten are far better, have more tradition, better players coaches, facilities and cheerleaders. Except Duke, who should put their stable of wildebeasts on The Biggest Loser.

I will continue to downplay anything that has to do with UK. After all…We all know the best teams are in the Big East and Acc.

  30. Papel_Hygenico Says:

Ac coach who has won 2 would be more likely to leave because he knows he can only go downhill where he is, like Coach K has done since 1992.

  31. Papel_Hygenico Says:

Certainly, after last night, we all owe Tubby at least ONE apology. His is NOT the most boring ball on the planet any more.

  32. Kentuckys Next Coach Says:

I cannot wait for Monday night. We get to play Morgan Freeman and the rest of the OSU Buckeyes.

We blew them out earlier in the year…It should be a fine farewell for me and the rest of my team. At least I’ll be paid more than Rich Brooks.

  33. Superman Says:

The way I look at it, the possibility that Donovan is leaving is helping to motivate Florida. It’s like Wooden in his final title run. They want to send him out in style.

  34. Jo Jo Says:

Donovan is the perfect coach for UK’s current roster because he’s built Florida into a power using “Tubby-syle” recruits. I mean 50-100 ranked players instead of McDonald’s All-Americans.

  35. Daniel Says:

This was definitely a less than steller Final Four and NCAA tourney in general.

Do we even consider VCU as an upset since Duke played pathetic this season?

By the way, Matt, it was nice to finally meet you today!

  36. Daniel Says:

    er, yesterday

  37. wildcatlover3 Says:

after watching last night, i am getting an uneasy feeling that billy d is going to stay in florida. i have thought since ots left that billy would come but i just have a sinking feeling that noah, out of spite for uk, will decide to stay if they win and try to convince the other juniors to do the same. if so, billy d has to stay in florida and we will never have a chance at him again. also, they could promise billy to stay since he has basically 2 days to decide on the uk job while the florida players have until may. would it be unheard of to talk billy out of uk and then declare after someone else is hired. i know they hate us and this would be the ultimate screwing by noah.

  38. DogStar Says:

Cool…so let’s give them 12 fouls so they really beat the crap out of each other. Basketball is getting way to phyisical already.

  39. Anonymous Says:

the 5 foul rule isnt stupid. its only 6 fouls and your out in the NBA because they play 8 more min.

  43. Jimcat Says:

Ouestion: I have been trying to reason as to why the national sports media hates the Kentucky basketball program so bad. They
line up like robots to bash the programs and make wild generalizations about wildcat fans—–Anyone have a clue?

  44. Toffer Says:

WOULD TUBBY HAVE BEEN FIRED IF THEY CALLED A FOUL AGAINST MICHIGAN STATE WHEN SPARKS HIT THAT THREE TO TIE THE ELITE 8 GAME JUST 2 YEARS AGO?

  45. Anonymous Says:

#46 Tubby WASN’T fired but YES - he would have left anyway. It wasn’t about FF appearances but respect.

  46. Han Says:

    46) Funny. Tubby wasn’t fired. Tubby left because he didn’t want to keep coaching given the likely demand to fire his staff, the continuing pressure, and his inability to enjoy this job any more.

  47. Toffer Says:

ANSWER THE QUESTION HAN. WOULD TUBBY BE THE COACH STILL IF THE OFFICIALS DIDN’T EAT THEIR WHISTLES

  48. Anonymous Says:

Tubby couldn’t take the heat so he left the kitchen! He knew/knows what Kentucky BBall is all about. I did respect him (as a person) until he left the way he did. And the condition he left the program after inheriting one at it’s top! He was not pushed out he simply Quit!

  49. Anonymous Says:

Tubby said he left for a challenge. To me, fixing the mess he made here should have been the challenge. But that was a challenge he couldn’t handle.

  50. Dr. Bob Says:

The years of the Gators are before you. Bow.

  51. Anonymous Says:

Changing his staff had nothing to do with him leaving. If so, why hasn’t he ask any of them to join him? Only Saul “Daddy’s Boy” Smith has been named as an assistant. He is looking to pull an Eddie/Sean Sutton at Ok. St. Sean played for Eddie at UK, then coached under him at OSU and is now the Head Coach. Tubby wants the same for his boys, yet another reason to leave.

  52. JKW1974 Says:

I am coming over to the idea that Billy D will not come here. Yes, we have way better fan support and facilities and tradition and all of that……

But I think he will stay put, and UF will pony up not only bucks, but a new arena that they won’t be able to fill, either…

I also wonder that since Arkansas is going to talk to Calipari, why can’t we?

I still think Jay Wright is most likely, given the situation….

  53. Anonymous Says:

47 no, he would not. He wanted to leave for Virginia in 2005.

  54. Toffer Says:

JAY WRIGHT IS NOT COMING FOLKS

  55. A Player in AZ Says:

Matt–your killing me. I totally miss the podcasts–when are those gonna be back?

  56. Han Says:

    47) Swallow your capslock key, chief.

If we went to the Final Four in 05, odds are better he’s still here, because some of the louder jackasses (like the DD guys) would’ve had less ammo, especially if we’d won 2 more for the 8th Title.

Also, if we’d won the Title in 05, possibly the team wasn’t as uncomfortable around each other last year. Or maybe Morris or Rondo goes pro and 06 was even worse than it ended up being. Hard to say.

What if Bogans doesn’t hurt his ankle and we manage to beat Dwyane Wade?

There’s not much disputing that Final Fours and Championships attract recruits, so odds are Tubby would’ve had an easier time recruiting. Maybe his assistants get offered jobs elsewhere, as well, and we have a different staff the last two years.

A lot of ifs, though, as many around here would say.

Ultimately, I think a lot of us would agree that Tubby wasn’t really cut out for coaching one of the highest-profile, most demanding college basketball programs. He’ll probably be a lot happier at Minnesota, and I wish him a lot of success there, though I know that will just be ammo for the media to bash us more for running him off. Nevermind that sometimes a coach can do better in a different job than in the one he had before. Ask the New England Patriots’ coach Belichek.

  57. NewWildcatOrder Says:

Who’s the Tubby stalker in the comments section of that gopher link?

  58. gobigblue Says:

B-O-R-I-N-G Final Four. I expected more with 1s v. 2s. And the crowd at the Florida vs. UCLA game was LAME!

  59. Anonymous Says:

#56 not so - OTS leaving had NOTHING to do with FF appearances (or lack thereof).

He left for (1) challenge and (2) respect plus (3) happiness at Minnesota.

  60. Anonymous Says:

Smith’s move to Minnesota caught Patterson and Lucas by surprise. The two had considered making a joint commitment to Kentucky while here, McDonald’s spokesman Jeff Olson said. But Lucas’ father, John, told game officials last week to pull the plug on such an announcement. The players were not ready to make a decision.

  61. blue blood in the ville Says:

March madness is this simple…..let them play to get to the fnal four (all the walks, carries, no call fouls & even no call tech(see Oden in rupp)and then when the games are at the most importance the stripes make their presence known. Happens every year. Let them play!
