It’s time for the SEC basketball schedules to toughen up

by @ 3:00 pm. Filed under Blue Blooded Opinions

There were a number of things coming out of last week’s SEC meetings in Destin. The most notable pertained to football with the reprimanding the coaches got for their public disputes and the limits placed on how many freshmen they could take each season. But, aside from finding out that their games would all be televised like the football teams, it was more of a quiet front for the basketball squads. However, SEC commissioner Mike Slive did make it known that he expects all of the men’s basketball teams to improve their scheduling and that having three teams make the NCAA tournament is simply unacceptable. The coaches didn’t think it was much to panic about, writing this year off as an anomoly to what is usually a fairly strong conference, but Slive made it clear that when an SEC team plays down in competition, everyone in the conference does.

That means you Florida/Donovan, no more cupcake schedules for you

  2. Chris Minton Says:

does this mean we dont have to live in fear of gardner-webb and vmi?

  3. justacatfan Says:

I agree with the Commissioner. Weak scheduling hurts the Conference.

Also agree with SaveUK Florida played CreamPuff schedule last year.

#3 well when the SEC says that SEC basketball needs to play harder
schedules they have to mean UF.

UT plays a pretty hard schedule
UK plays one, eventhough it may not be good enough for us, we still play top
    teir no conference teams.
Arkansas played Texas and Oklahoma last year
    I think LSU played a decent non-conference.

Florida really hurts us. Vandy refuses to play a good non-conference schedule
so I don’t expect that to change.

I bet Grant won’t be scared to start playing a tougher schedule at Bama.

MSU shouldn’t be scared. Horn probably isn’t scared. We know Kennedy isn’t
scare, heck he will hit a mofo.

The problem is UF, VU, and UGA when it comes to scheduling. It has always
been that way and I don’t see it changing

  5. UKSoCalCampus Says:

The governator! All right. Weird how Florida can play cupcakes and be fine in football though…

  6. justacatfan Says:

This comes at a time when most teams schedules are already set. I hope the Commish has relayed this to the University’s before this week. Otherwise it will be the same as last year with Florida. Florida may not give decent showing in out of Conferece matchups. Will this contribute to the conference and it’s strengh?

  7. SaveUK Says:

Not to just pick on UF

Vandy is even worse than UF. I have season Vandy tickets just for the UK
game and I can’t give away the Vandy non-conference games.

  8. SaveUK Says:

I even gave some Vandy non-conference tickets to a charity to help raise
money and they couldn’t even get anyone to buy them in the sake of charity.

  9. repsol-69 Says:

who is this SEC commissioner you speak of?! Kentucky runs the SEC…

  10. Blonde32746 Says:

You would have to assume that Florida was the main team this was directed to. I think Washington and FSU were the only decent teams they played last year. I thought that UK had been starting to go the cupcake route recently but the games agaisnt UNC, UL and IU always looked good.

Cal realizes we have to play tougher as well though and now we have UNC, UL, Uconn and IU on the schedule … don’t scoff at Morehead State, they did make the tourney last year and maybe Texas on the horizon? Wow

  11. SaveUK Says:

Who might replace Meeks if he stays in the draft

I bet one possible choice is someone you all won’t even think of.

  12. agenda Says:

i heard a rumor that X.Henry/parents had a huge blow up w/ B.Self and may be looking at schools AGAIN ?!?!? i don’t think a LOI was involved since he had already signed one to play at Memphis…so moving on from a verbal to Kansas would be w/o penalty

  13. SaveUK Says:

#12 I was told that a few weeks ago but didn’t say anything because
the information I had was very little and not enough for me to feel
    comfortable saying anything.

Does that actually have any legs too it?

I am talking about the possibility that Noel Johnson maybe seriously
considering UK and UK seriously considering him. Although if he did
come to UK and Meeks stayed in the draft, there is no promise he would
start over Hood. Both are very comparable and Hood can do something that
    Johnson can’t do as well.

  14. dmw8067 Says:

Save, I read on here somewhere that Johnson’s father stated he wouuld be making a decision good so I figured that ruled out UK since we won’t know about Jodie until closer to June 15.
I would love to have Johnson on our team though, that would be great.

  15. dmw8067 Says:

    I meant “soon”, not “good”.

  16. SaveUK Says:

#14 I been telling you all that the scholorship situation won’t depend
on Meeks. I am pretty sure we will lose two more current players and almost
for sure we will lose 3 regardless if Meeks stays or not.

  17. dmw8067 Says:

16, what I’m saying is Johnson’s father said they would make a decision soon … meaning they would not be waiting for UK to offer.

  18. dmw8067 Says:

16, I agree with you, the scholarships will be there is Cal wants to offer someone - anyone!

  19. justacatfan Says:

I don’t mind signing another player if he’s a good fit. Even if Jodie leaves we Hood and Dodson who will fill in and take his place. Jodie is a great shooter and very good player but these kids are not chopped liver.
