Jodie Meeks is still working out at the pre-draft combine in Chicago, trying to get a feel for where the NBA teams think he rates. Today, though, we get some interesting feedback today courtesy of NBA.com’s David Aldridge. Aldridge writes that Meeks is in a group of guys who are probably first rounders but should return to school. Meeks is in the bunch along with Wake Forest’s Jeff Teague and Gonzaga’s Austin Daye. It’s not unique to hear that he should return to school but we haven’t heard a lot of people say he’s likely a first round pick.
Here’s a combine interview from yesterday:

Jodie should go this year he will not have as good a year next year.
May 31st, 2009 at 11:16 am
Onions is good
May 31st, 2009 at 11:17 am
Maybe not stat wise, but one year of experience playing with 4 other talented people on the court at the msame time will help.
May 31st, 2009 at 11:22 am
Probably 1st round? There are a lot of big names in front of Meeks. Don’t see this for a 6′3 guard who had a lot of trouble with ball handling and getting to the rim last year. I bet if he stays he will be in the 40-60 slot and will end up like J. Crawford on a developmental squad for a year or two.

Open Letter to Jodie Meeks:
PASS THE #@&%ING BALL IN TRANSITION!
May 31st, 2009 at 11:26 am
4 you are right but he wont be handling the ball next year that much with Wall and Bledsoe he needs to go know while name is hot.
May 31st, 2009 at 11:26 am
his stats will be better!!…maybe not points wise…but overall numbers will be more improved
May 31st, 2009 at 11:28 am
Interesting he referred to next year and the nba draft. Hmmm hope that is good news.
May 31st, 2009 at 11:30 am
8)He’ll have less points, but also less turnovers. He will hopefully handle the ball better and improve his overall game. A year with Cal, could improve his chances even if his points go down.
May 31st, 2009 at 11:31 am
sorry that was supposed to be a
not a 8-

he said “um” every few seconds haha

If Meeks comes back…
Will there ever have been a backcourt duo as fast up and down the court?
John Wall - Tabbed by many scouts as the fastest PG they’ve ever seen from one end of the court to the other.
Jodie Meeks - We all know Meeks explosive quickness.
Can you imagine the fast break potential between these 2 with the front court players kicking the ball out in transition?
I think Meeks has learned to keep the ball in his hands in transition as some players learn over time that when you give it up you don’t get it back. This isn’t a McDonalds game though. John Wall is a true PG who loves to give the dish as displayed in all his prep game video footage.

12 add to that the backcourt of Patterson Cousins Orton and the wings of Miller and Dodsen….AHHHHHHHHHHHH this year is gonna be FUN!!!
May 31st, 2009 at 11:41 am
Is Orton in California working out with the same guy Blake Griffin
worked out with during the summers at Oklahoma
May 31st, 2009 at 11:43 am
Orton is already taken summer school classes
May 31st, 2009 at 11:49 am
#15 Okay, that makes sense that he is taking classes now and the going
to San Fran to work with the trainer that Griffin worked out with later
in the summer.

who knows…I read on this site actually that he is in school right now
May 31st, 2009 at 11:58 am
Orton is going to be a beast. He sometimes gets lost in the Patterson/
Cousins hype but Orton is right there with them.
Our frontcourt is going to be sick.
When you look at college frontcourts you always see Big Front courts that
are not very athletic or smaller frontcourts who are very athletic. Skinny
front courts who can shot block or huge frontcourts who are great rebounders.
You hear of short frontcourts who can shot real well or taller front courts
who can’t.
When you look at
Patterson
Cousins
Orton
Pilgrim
you see big strong guys, who are very athletic, can shoot, well pretty much
do it all without scarificing something.
May 31st, 2009 at 12:04 pm
well if Orton is even close to Griffin in anyway i am all for it then~!
May 31st, 2009 at 12:14 pm
Save have you heard anything about 2010 recruits.
I have a feeling will be better than this years with alot of 2 to 3 year players.
May 31st, 2009 at 12:17 pm
The big thing I noticed is his outlet passing skills after a rebound. He always looks down court first and is a very good passer. He is better ballplayer than his rating.
May 31st, 2009 at 12:33 pm
Jodie come back! Any kind of fool could see, there was something in everything about you.
May 31st, 2009 at 12:45 pm
I still can’t believe all this. Wall,Bledsoe,Orton,Cousins,Hood,Dod, Did I die? seriously.. I’ve been in a UK basketball depression since the end of last season, and before that since 05. We are going to be sick. I don’t think we will ever see this great of a class again. Yes Cali is the recruiting god! but I donno if he can out do himself again.
Great to be a UK fan
May 31st, 2009 at 12:50 pm
23…how can you doubt him??? it only took him 2 months to get this class….i think this is just the top of the iceberg for years to come
May 31st, 2009 at 12:52 pm
Jodie Meeks will benefit a great deal by coming back and here’s why I think that. Terrence Williams is a good example he had a good JR year but came back as a SR and had a great year. While his scoring was down his rebounds and assists were way up and I think that is why he has risen so far in this years draft. Jodie will be a star on a team of stars he won’t have to focus so much on scoring which I beleive will make it easier for him to focus on more parts of his game (passing and rebounding). This will show all the scouts that he has evolved into a more well rounded player and better pro. Just my opinion of course but I think Meeks will be a better all around player after a year in Cal’s system and with all the help he will have around him.
May 31st, 2009 at 1:01 pm
On a football related note… What time is the UK vs. UL game this year?
May 31st, 2009 at 1:01 pm
With all these great players and good scorers on the team now Jodie can take his 3’s and make them every time and should be open a lot more this year
May 31st, 2009 at 1:06 pm
heck Kentucky has it own NBA team…come on back Jodie!!
May 31st, 2009 at 1:17 pm
I doubt his numbers would decline that much. Team scoring will increase 12-15 points, at least. If Meeks returns this is how I see the point distribution working out:
Meeks: 21
Patterson: 18
Cousins: 13
Wall: 12
Miller: 7
Harris, Dodson, Bledsoe, Hood, Stevenson, Pilgrim/Liggins: 15-20
May 31st, 2009 at 1:25 pm
29
Maybe in the early going but as the year progresses I expect Wall to average over 20 points a game
May 31st, 2009 at 1:29 pm
#20 Will Barton but everyone knows that already. He might end up being
ranked #1 in the class when it is all said and done. He is lighting it up
right now in AAU ball.
PG - I think we will either get Knight or Irving. I perfer Irving but coach
Cal will pick which one he wants more. Think about that - we are picking who
we want now.
SG/SF - I combind these two because I think (not for sure) that the guys Cal is
looking at can play both positions. Barton is a given. I think we will either
get Lamb or Smith as well. If we get neither Barton will do just fine with what
we have returning.
PF/SF - CJ Leslie or Ferguson - I think we will get one of them
C - Not really sure. Not really in BIG TIME centers in this class and non
that can touch Orton, especially with Orton having a years experience. Might
be hard to sell an elite center on UK with Orton here. Not that there are really
any elite centers in the 2010 class. Might be able to use that to sell PT for
both Leslie and Ferguson.
May 31st, 2009 at 1:34 pm
Here is something exciting to think about. What if we lose Wall, Meeks,
Patterson, and Cousins after next season. Lets just say for argument sake
we don’t add anyone in the 2010 class (which we know we will).
That would mean that are team in 2010 after lossing 4 starters and before
we add anyone in the 2010 class would be:
Bledsoe
Hood
Dodson
Miller
Orton
Just think about that, WOW! That in itself would be a good starting lineup
with everyone at least having a year of experience. We might be a little
small with Miller at the PF position but in Cals system he would fit perfectly
offensivly. Orton would make up for it with his size. Hood would make up for
it too being a 6′7 SG.
The future is bright before we even start talking about adding Barton, Ferguson,
Leslie, Knight, Irving, etc.

I can’t help but question how much some of you actually know about this process at all. I used to think people got drafted based on stats alone back in middle school. Let’s try to maintain our reputation as a fan base that is both passionate and knowledgeable, okay? The NBA drafts on EFFICIENCY more than pure scoring averages. So if Jodie’s PPG drops next year, that’s fine, so long as his efficiency gets better. And given that he was playing 40 mins/game this past year, I imagine it might do that. Plus, Meeks clearly displayed a somewhat suspect handle for a guy his size when doing the cone drills in the video posted earlier this week. You will have to go behind your back a lot, and that’s not something Jodie is comfortable doing right now. Shooters in the NBA are a dime a dozen, trust me.

“The NBA drafts on EFFICIENCY more than pure scoring averages. So if Jodie’s PPG drops next year, that’s fine, so long as his efficiency gets better.”
Yeah, I heard Cal say that two or three weeks ago too.
#5 Would you pass the ball in transition if you knew there was a 50% chance that the other guy wouldn’t be able to catch the pass, or would find some other way to turn the ball over? I predict that if Jodie comes back he’ll show better passing skills simply because he’ll have more talented teammates to throw it to.

You gotta love Jodie saying Cal landed players who fit the quality of the program. Good luck in whatever you decide.

Did anyone else notice the tee shirt being worn by the guy in the stands as Lebron walked off the court Saturday night? It’s a little hard to see behind the wording on the screen. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X-Gz724sjAQ
