Jerry Tipton (who finds himself all on the blog today) is reporting tonight that Landon Slone is close to committing to Morehead State. Slone would be a scholarship player there and join the Ohio Valley Conference champs after sitting out a season. As you may know, UK opens up the Calipari era against Morehead in November, and even though Landon wouldnt be able to play, it will be an interesting subplot for the game.
We wish Landon luck and hope he is very successful at Morehead.

Do you think Landon Slone could appeal & win a case for not sitting this year out from the NCAA. I know Tennessee had a player win one a couple years ago to be near his dying father. Since Landon was not on scholarship & let go by the Coach, would he have a case ? I wonder if there is any precent for other players winning an appeal under these circumstances….

3, The Tn player you refer to was Smith and being near his dying father was certainly admirable. However, he bypassed at least 5 D1 schools to go to Tn, 2 no more than 30 minutes from his dad’s home. Knoxville was 3 hours from his dad. If he wants to transfer to Tn, fine. But don’t use the excuse of being near his dying father as the primary reason, just not true.

There may be precedent, not sure about precent though.

What sucks is that if we use Pat Forde logic that would make Matt Jones the
one who is in violation since he attended both schools, LOL Kiddin. Actually that
would be Pat Forde logic.

The difference is that Camby took money during his Junior year at UMASS.
Corey Maggette took money before he went to Duke and Duke might have known
about it.
But Duke can’t be touched, NCAA is a bunch of you know whats

I talked to someone at MSU and he tells me that Slone has already made his decision. Congrats to Slone and to the Eagles. http://www.allkyhoops.com

Ack! Please no more Tipton… I beg of you!
Good luck Landon.

11. Maggette was ineligible by NCAA standards … it does not matter whether it was prior to LOI or not, it does not matter whether Coach K knew or not, Duke should get the same treatment as anyone else, and they didn’t … Coach K was ready “to accept whatever punishment the NCAA handed down” which was none …funny how that works out. Duke plays a player defined as ineligible to the tune of dbl digits a game in pts and a national runner up run and gets nothing, Cal/UMass plays a player defined as ineligible to a F4 and gets the season wiped out …Cal was not deemed to have known the payment was happening either … the NCAA picks and chooses when they want to be harda$$s about their own rules

I thought that when there was a coaching change at a school that a player could transfer and not have to sit out a year.
May 30th, 2009 at 7:51 pm
I guess I thought wrong. LOL

He will do well at Morehead, and it’s 0nly about a hour from his hometown. They have a nice program, and good coach. This is probably where he should have went to start with, or maybe a Marshall, but he got to live a dream that most of us never will for a year at least. Good luck Mr. Slone.

#14, you’re right on! The double-standard by the NCAA is my main issue with the entire situation. Either enforce the rules all the time or
forget it! There is absolutely no difference with what happened at UMASS and what happened at Duke. When the player took the money is
irrelevant. Just as you said, an ineligible player is just that, and you can’t play them without forfeiting the games in which they played.

Landon, I wish it would have worked for you to stay and walk on. You are a tough player. I wish you the best!
Cuz Stitch says so!

Being a MSU grad, I think that Landon will do great at Morehead. Landon is a OVC player and I wish him the best.

Best of luck to Landon. I look forward to seeing him play at the RSEC in two years. I totally agree that if recruits can be let out of their LOI due to coaches changes and schollies are year to year at the schools whim then players transfering after a coaching change should not have to sit out. Maybe throw in that they can’t transfer in-conference or to the school that the coach goes to but take out the penalty for guys like Landon.
BTW, Morehead won more NCAA tournament games last year than UK has in the past two season.

What is RSEC and LOI?
May 30th, 2009 at 10:06 pm
RSEC = Regional Special Events Center

LOI = Letter of Intent

I think Landon’s case has more validity than just a coaching change because he was basically kicked off the team due to the Coaching change. Supposedly he only got to attend the 1st of the 4 practices…

21) Were you around with Cutchin Fieldhouse(Racer Arena)….now that was homecourt with Marcus Brown and Vince Rainey.

So a walk-on, someone with no scholly and no LOI, cannot start a new year with a new Div-1 school? If so that is ridiculous!
