ESPN is reporting that UK will make an offer to give Donovan a 1 million dollar a year raise and give him 2.8 million a year with incentives up to 3.5 million. This would not make him the highest paid coach in the land, but would make him quite wealthy.
Unlike the reports earlier in the week, there is no indication here of Donovan’s interest level and if I were a betting man, I would be the ultimate offer ends up higher than what is now being reported. Maybe Goulet can right a song about UK again…..

I believe either that article, or another one I saw, said that would be UK’s starting offer.
Odds are that Billy would then see what Florida is offering, and UK would then make a second offer if need be.

Good Video!!
March 30th, 2007 at 3:59 pm
That dollar amount makes my forehead turn a shade of GREEN

That is the second-best Robert Goulet video I’ve seen this year.

That chirping you are hearing is Vitale/Davis/Katz trying to figure out how to sabotage BD-to-UK without looking like total a**clowns. The egg on their faces will be priceless. I live in Orlando so I’ll love my emails to Bianchi as well. Still not 100% done but we are getting closer.
March 30th, 2007 at 4:06 pm
Why not just start at $3 million per and say we will make you the highest paid coach in the country?
Just looking at it from a basic negotiation standpoint, Donovan holds all the cards, and if he is UK’s first choice, then they should put their best foot forward and try to overwhelm him from the start.
March 30th, 2007 at 4:09 pm
I dont care who the coach is, UK has to bring back the backgammon uniforms….Those were the days for real.
March 30th, 2007 at 4:13 pm
Well, the Cats are gonna show him the money, aren’t they?
March 30th, 2007 at 4:17 pm
Only $2.8? I would knock his socks off with a first offer of $3.0-$3.5…
Say no to that…
March 30th, 2007 at 4:20 pm
This is news? The TCP clown broke this on Tuesday night. ESPN is WAY behind this story.
March 30th, 2007 at 4:26 pm
Who is the highest paid coach then??
March 30th, 2007 at 4:28 pm
Coach K is one of the highest
March 30th, 2007 at 4:31 pm
Roy and Coach K both bank 3 million. I think the initital offer has to be higher. We need to offer NBA money. Florida wanted to re-up his contract last year for over 2 million. He said no, because “his guys wern’t getting paid” for winning, why should he. I thought at that point last year he would be looking to put the screws to florida or jump to the NBA. I would agree the offer should be somewhere between 3 and 3.5
March 30th, 2007 at 4:31 pm
You’ll have to forgive ESPN for being a bit slow, Chewie. Most of them are still hyperventilating over the possibility that Billy D even considers coming here. If he does, they’ll have to shut down the whole website for a week to dig out all of the videos and articles bashing UK and promising Billy would never come.
By the way, Rome just said Florida has too much for UCLA: “They have Kentucky’s next coach…” LOL
March 30th, 2007 at 4:33 pm
Tutition at the University of Kentucky! Is getting ready to go up! Way Up!
March 30th, 2007 at 4:36 pm
Rex Chapman and Rick Pitino were on Rome this afternoon. I only got to catch a little of Rex’s segment and they were not talking about UK at that point.
March 30th, 2007 at 4:36 pm
I agree UK should have come out with at least 3.2 mill a year.
March 30th, 2007 at 4:39 pm
It’s my understanding that we’re talking base salary here. Coack K and Roy make those numbers with endorsements and other factors considered. Anyone?
March 30th, 2007 at 4:39 pm
chill…there’s more money.
March 30th, 2007 at 4:40 pm
We need to offer $3.5 BASE right now! Incentives push it in the $4.5 range. We are UK damn it!
March 30th, 2007 at 4:41 pm
Check this article out! I found it intersting http://sportsline.com/collegebasketball/story/10071660
March 30th, 2007 at 4:43 pm
For all the grief Rick Barnes gets about not winning big games and in particular the fact that he seems to lose to lower seeded teams in the tournament, I just looked at Donocan’s tournament record — quite mixed. Yes, he has two Finals appearances including one championship, but the other 6 years?
1999 - Sweet 16 - Lower seeded Gonzaga
2001 - 2nd Round - Blown out by 11 seed Temple
2002 - 1st Round - 12 seed Creighton
2003 - 2nd Round - Blown out by 7 seed Michigan State
2004 - 1st Round - 12 seed Manhattan
2005 - 2nd Round - Lower seeded Villanova
That means by losing 6 of his 8 games to lower seeded teams, he’s record’s not much better than Barnes’s losing 7 of 9 games to lower seeded teams.
Donovan has done a great job turning around the Florida program and is certainly a great coach, but on that record does he deserve to be the highest paid coach in the country? Probably not, but next week he will almost certainly be. Good for him.
March 30th, 2007 at 4:46 pm
22) It was Billy’s record prior to his current starters that had him as lower than my #1 choice for a while. But right now he’s hot, and he’ll bring the recruits, as well.
March 30th, 2007 at 4:46 pm
I at least feel reassured that Barnhart knows who the man is and that we need to anty up big dollars
March 30th, 2007 at 4:47 pm
Give me 600,000 a yr and I’ll take the job. Call me
March 30th, 2007 at 4:48 pm
Thanks for the update on the offer to BD.
March 30th, 2007 at 4:52 pm
The man licking his lips is Urban Meyer. If Florida pays up to match UK’s offer, Meyer just got that much richer. Football coach at a football school gets paid more than the b-ball coach.
March 30th, 2007 at 4:53 pm
You’re welcome for the Goulet clip.
March 30th, 2007 at 5:00 pm
21.
That is a good article.
March 30th, 2007 at 5:01 pm
I just had a friend for dinner
he is well acquainted with the
U of FL and they will match
any offer and then some that
UK makes to Billy. Meyer will
eat this up and demand even
more or he will go to FSU. By
the way I would love to have
Billy for dinner also.
March 30th, 2007 at 5:03 pm
When did the story break: DD last week. TCP Monday. ESPN this afternoon. Matt Jones this evening. Sounds about right.
March 30th, 2007 at 5:10 pm
15- it’s already been going up for years. At least now we’ll have something to show for it.
Top 20 university…HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA…
Oh now I made myself sad.
March 30th, 2007 at 5:11 pm
30, Bobby Bowden coaches at FSU. Meyer ain’t goin’ there.
March 30th, 2007 at 5:53 pm
Jay Bilas has always been one of my favorite ESPN analysts. On PTI, he said Kentucky is the better looking job and that Kentucky fans are no more crazy than any other teams’s fans.
March 30th, 2007 at 5:54 pm
If Goulet can’t right a song, maybe he can write one…
#31, I am not convinced we have a story per se… more like a story about some stories. Are you saying that DD broke the SAME rumors that TCP did and then ESPN reported the exact same details? I can predict there will be a war in the next 5 years someplace, and some people will soon die in a tornado or earthquake someplace. I could pedict we were working on a BD offer and figure it would be in the ballpark of the top coaches. But did DD or TCP or ANYBODY have anything but guesses? Did they know insider detail?
March 30th, 2007 at 5:54 pm
The UK BB program actually has a friend at ESPN. Jay Bilas just said some very good things about our program on PTI.
March 30th, 2007 at 6:03 pm
I agree with #35 and I don’t think Matt was presenting the news as a big scoop or anything, he was just pointing out that a major media source is now reporting the news. That is all. Thankfully, this will all be over in a few days and we can all go back to our lives
March 30th, 2007 at 6:05 pm
On SportsCenter, Donovan blatantly not answering the question as to whether he intends to stay there at Florida. He did say he would like to be there as long as they will have him, but almost immediately afterwards he weakened that statement, as if realizing how it sounded.
The thing that stood out to me is this:
In talking about facing UCLA, he talked about feeling honored to be playing against them and described them as one of the most storied/prestigious schools in basketball (my words, but basic sentiment he used). What are the other schools that fit that bill? Kansas, Indiana, UNC, Duke, and oh yeah, UK. Florida isn’t one.
March 30th, 2007 at 6:15 pm
Let Jay coach. Na just kidding
March 30th, 2007 at 6:15 pm
I think that the next time Dick Vitale is in Rupp to call a game, we should do whatever we can to make him feel unwelcome. And I was listening to XM’s ESPN station and that guy was ripping UK as well. What a great unbiased sports network!
March 30th, 2007 at 6:21 pm
We shall have the last word. Three years we will be on the national scene and be serious national contenders whoever we get to coach. They are judging the whole fan base on a few radical fans. Screw dickie v, and all the talking heads. Maybe not Colin he seemed to make sense the other day.
March 30th, 2007 at 6:22 pm
Yahoo reporting an AP story that Richie Farmer is getting in on the Donovon action…
March 30th, 2007 at 6:23 pm
And here I was making fun of people not spelling Gillispie right…
March 30th, 2007 at 6:46 pm
I do not think ESPN was taking into account the 3.5 million dollar bonus at the end of the contract. There will also be other sweeteners.
When everything is figued-in, the contract will be worth a lot more than ESPN is saying.
Billy is going to be really really rich no matter what happens. It will not be about the money if BD takes the UK job. It is a factor but not the #1 factor. Challenge, Family, Friends, Money and Timing all will be part of his decision.
March 30th, 2007 at 6:48 pm
Who develops these search firms for college athletics? I think my 4 year old niece would have figured that Donovon would be the first choice for Kentucky. I’m glad it takes an agency to realize that a former assistant couch for UK who is going for his second straight championship might be a good fit for Kentucky. They must have tough meetings.
March 30th, 2007 at 6:52 pm
40) We should keep it classy, though.
The next time Gameday comes and Vitale is talking about how great we are, we should have signs with what he said on them…and then hold up another sign next to it that says, “But we forgive you because we’re the greatest fans in the world.”
42) He said that he wasn’t making a hard sell, but if UK asks him to, he will.
March 30th, 2007 at 7:00 pm
did anyone hear Ricky P. on the dan patrick show saying that there was a 0% chance of Billy D coming here??
March 30th, 2007 at 7:01 pm
FSN South is once again showing Beyond the Glory about The Game in 92.
March 30th, 2007 at 7:03 pm
47) From what I’ve seen on message boards, Pitino has said about a dozen different things on a dozen different shows, and a dozen people have interpreted his comments a dozen ways.
What I’ve heard the most is that he says his gut feeling is Donovan will stay at Florida, but if he does leave, it won’t be because of money.
March 30th, 2007 at 7:08 pm
i hate rick pitino, i bet he is telling Billy not to come because he doesnt want the competition and he wants to remain the best
coach in the state…rick pitino is a terrible person
March 30th, 2007 at 7:12 pm
50) Rick Pitino…I’m watching the special on the Game and the Unforgettables. And you know the last thing they showed before the commercial break right now?
Rick Pitino at the press conference when he came to UK…”We will win, and we will win right away.” How many coaches have ever been willing to make that statement when taking on team, let alone a troubled team?
March 30th, 2007 at 7:18 pm
I WANT THE BILLY FROM A AND M!!!!!!!
HE’S ON THE RISE, AND I WANT HIM WHEN HIS PEAK=8, 9….
March 30th, 2007 at 7:41 pm
Just because UK’s made an offer doesn’t mean BD has accepted, afterall UF will make a counteroffer. This has a way to go to play out and is far too early to predict what will happen.
March 30th, 2007 at 8:10 pm
Coach K and Williams do only get paid about 3.0 mil a year AFTER endorsement deals and everything. Their base bacy is about 1. something a year… I think tubby’s base was only 500K… am I wrong.. wasn’t it all the extra stuff that gave him 2.5 a year? Anyway… if they’re saying his pay will be 2.8… that’s probably still after endorsements and everything… incentives are not endorsements… that’s like if he reaces the final four he gets an extra 200k andif he wins it all he gets another 500k
2.8 +
.2 +
.5 =
3.5 Million in incentives.
March 30th, 2007 at 8:14 pm
Those Robert Goulet (ESPN) commercials rocked. Check them all out. It was UK, Kansas, UCLA, and UNC. I had forgotten all about them. Senility is a mother.
March 30th, 2007 at 8:15 pm
Billy Donovan has been a darling in Kentucky since the moment he got the Marshall job, and even when Tubby got the job after Benedict Pitino he was still a fan favorite here in the Bluegrass. I remember the first time he brought his Florida team into Rupp, and the whole Rupp Arena crowd gave him a standing ‘O’. Even though he has whipped our collective Wildcat-asses throughout recent memory, he is still admired, well respected, and even cheered when he comes back to Lexington. What Billy must realize, and most certainly does, is that he can’t stay at Florida, spurn us, and ever have a chance at that sort of reception ever again. He has been forced into a corner, where he will either be our next head coach, or biggest enemy (approaching Dale Brown levels) regardless. He has no option of just being another coach, and that’s got to be weighing on his mind. Does he really want to bear the brunt of the Wildcat nation’s hatred as being “the coach who turned down UK?” I think not. Bring on Billy D!
March 30th, 2007 at 9:29 pm
you’re right #50….your my boy….give billd what he deserves…break the bank…at least 3.25 mill!!!
March 30th, 2007 at 9:42 pm

that is a weak offer in my view…give the man 4 mill and get him here…we have the money to spend and no matter what, UK basketball will always dominate every other sport in the state……….
March 30th, 2007 at 10:22 pm
Great- now if you could find the video of the 92 Cats jerseys being retired….
March 30th, 2007 at 10:29 pm
Those of you saying “break the bank” and the equivalent…I am assuming you have no difficulty in further increases in season ticket prices and that Mitch can expect your contribution forthcoming soon to the K-fund? No, its not the thought that counts–its the cash that counts. Here’s the link to the K-Fund:
http://www.ukathletics.com/index.php?s=&url_article_id=11379&change_we ll_id=2
By the way, the Athletics Assn budget does not affect the tuition for students. Two different entities. The UKAA sometime makes donations to the academic programs, etc.
If this gets into a bidding war, the outcome will likely not be good. UF has the largest athletics budget in the SEC.
Come back down to earth….

I’m with #22.
Donovan might be great at UK, if he comes. I’m willing to bet he would be.
Just two years ago, though, not only did Tubby own Billy D. on the court, Florida’s record in the previous five tournaments was no better than that of the teams of many of the other candidates people on this board are saying are not remotely up to UK caliber. Granted, last year and this year have been great for Donovan, but did things really change that much since 2005?
There are a lot of great coaches out there. I think Donovan’s probably the best one we have a real shot at. He’s not the only option.
March 31st, 2007 at 1:13 am
42 That is my biggest worry for us to get Billy D is the family and friends thing. His father coaches his oldest son in HS basketball, He and his wife took it upon themselves to raise the money to build a brand new Catholic HS in their area, and his wife’s parents recently moved to Gainsville. I think these things more than any other are our biggest obsticles for landing Billy D.
March 31st, 2007 at 1:17 am
With that said my solid #2 has to Billy G. He acts like he wants to be here, is a up and comer, is almost as much of a baskeball freak as we are, and everyone seems to think that BD is our only shot at landing Lucas, and Patterson. Do you think maybe JL would be intersted in having the freedom with the ball that AC Law had this season. Probably wouldn’t be able to get PP but I think JL would be a definate possibility
March 31st, 2007 at 7:37 am
We had been passing the hat among the 5 families.
We have 8 mill we were going to use to buy out The Tub.
Offer the Kid 3.5, and we’ll pony up the rest as a signing bonus. If he leaves, we’ll expect it back.
March 31st, 2007 at 8:12 am
instead of begging billy the kid to come to uk , we should have been begging tubby to stay . we should have offerd tubby 3.5 mill a year . i thought we had the whole uk prblem solved . all we wanted tubby to do is improve the recruiting , is that to much to ask ? and if i hear one more time that the uk fans are unrealistic , or that we expect a championship every year , im going to go poastal . the people who say these things about uk fans are the people who will never understand what its like to be a uk fan . they dont understand the passion that we feel for our cats . any couch would be lucky to couch our beloved boys in blue .
March 31st, 2007 at 8:19 am
by the way , the reason uk fans are so (crazy) passionate . its because its all we got , i mean its not like our football team is going to win a national championship any time soon . i mean its not like we have any pro teams to cheer for , unless your cinti. bengals fan that is . who wants to watch them lose year after year .
