Why no Talk of this Guy?

by @ 3:14 pm. Filed under Blue Blooded Opinions

One of our regular callers to the Sports Mob in the afternoon is a guy named “Hink” and for the past few days, he has been asking me why dont we think about Mike Montgomery? And for a while, I argued with him……Montgomery has only been at Stanford, not UK’s style, etc. But then I thought about it…..and why not consider Mike? He won at Stanford, a school that takes academic requirements seriously and has a tougher time finding players. Fellow coaches say he is a genius when it comes to the Xs and Os of college basketball, and his teams always play with intelligence. He has fallen a bit off the radar screen thanks to his NBA problems, but Montgomery seems like he is still a good coach. Why not at least look at him?

New story on ESPN about what UK is prepared to offer Donovan.

  2. Forrest4Three Says:

We dont need him we have a coach. Billy D

  3. kyriver Says:

Who wants to apologize to DB and CatsPause now? Is it ok now that ESPN reports it?
Some people need to eat CROW.

  4. Anonymous Says:

    That offer is WEAK

  5. Azubuikesmadhops Says:

    Cause Pitino thumped his ass

  6. Catsfan Says:

I don’t like Montgomery at all. Only one Final 4 and lets not forget that in 2004 when #1 seed UK lost to UAB,, #1 seed Stanford also lost in the 2nd round that year which was also their only loss that year. So his team underachieved even more than Tubby did. Plus he recruited Mark Madsen, enough said.

  7. kyriver Says:

Are you serious? This is same guy with the dorky twins that got their arses handed to
    them by Louisville? Please…

  8. Jake Ryan Says:

    Cuz he sucks.

  9. Jake Ryan Says:

  10. Mac Says:

#3, because I don’t see a headline of “Blockbuster deal done.” emphasis period.

  11. dgillespie Says:

    7) WRONG, he wasn’t the coach.
I have been talking about him on the other thread.
Again, with what he was allowed to accept at Stanford, I thought he had a helluva run. Don’t forget the standards he was held to academically.
He would be better than Crean or Cap.

Pitino just said on ESPN radio that he thinks if BD doesn’t take it that UK should look at Ford or Pelphrey.
The only problem with his thoughts, is he afraid that the new UK coach would hurt his recruiting unlike when whats his name was there?

  12. Anonymous Says:

    3/7:

Montgomery left Stanford in 2004, he wasnt the coach of the Stanford team in the tourney this year

also Bird/CP’s article wasnt criticized because it reported that there was an offer, it was criticized because of the way it was presented and that it claimed the offer had already been as good as accepted

  13. blue blinders Says:

We have had trouble beating smart kids. He would be used to recruiting that kind of player. There are ten coaches out there given the time and resources that could be successful at UK. There is only one that could mean sec champ. and deep tournament success next year. I will support whoever and will see at least my one game a year. go big blue

  14. Duncan Cavanah Says:

I personally feel that we should hire John Wooden, and then fire his “old arse” the next day so that we can rub into UCLA fans’ faces the fact that we fired “the Wizard.”

  15. #1 Billy D fan Says:

montgomery would be an excellent backup plan along with billy g but wright crean and barnes shouldnt be considered.what about possibly ford and pelphry as a combo to get it done.unprecedented but the two are kentucky boys and could coexist and could both see significant paydays over what they make now.not likely but something to consider since they both lack experience but putting their heads together could be better than billy d

  16. MRCCAT Says:

ESPN reporting details of the deal to be offered by UK to Billy D next week….

  17. Al Purnell here Says:

I thought Tom Crean was gonna be the coach.

  18. Wednesday Says:

    17. If anything it makes the Bird article look even worse b/c it was so off base and they haven’t even tendered it to him or his agent.

  19. Wednesday Says:

    Sorry meant 3. not 17.

  20. Jerry Tipton is a Hack Says:

I remember when he accused Donovan of cheating a few years ago.

  21. blue2u Says:

Rick Pitino is an ass, of course he wants UK to hire someone he can claim as a protege. And his ass-kissers around Lexington want the same thing. This is the advantage of having an AD now who wasn’t around when we were the University of Pitino.

  22. blue2u Says:

    #20 And he was right.

  23. kyriver Says:

    #12..Yikes….about Mike M…I’m sorry.
But as for the CP item. I read it when it was posted and no way did I believe it was being
reported as a “done deal”. The title of the post has a question mark in it!!

“Monday update: Is the blockbuster deal done?”

A question mark implies that there is a question. The post even discussed ramblings of a “plan B”.
Why would one write about a “plan b” if they were in fact reporting that “plan a” was a done deal?

  24. genuine realist Says:

I live in Palo Alto and posted this before. Mike Montgomery is one terrific basketball coach. But he is the king of the grind-it-outs, even more than Howland. His teams played a great half-court, junk yard dog, broke glass and brick defense. On offense, they ran the same half court sets over and over to perfection. From about 1993 on, every one of his Stanford teams overachieved.

What all this adds up to is that MM is a Tubby clone - only, truth be told, Tubby is considerably better at it. If you did not like Tubby ball (I did), Montgomery ball is much more of the same. Also, Montgomery was not much of a recruiter. He liked exactly the same B plus athlete that Tubby does.

(BTW, the guy who criticized MM for recruiting Mark Madsen never saw Madsen in college. He was a classic lunch bucket power forward. One player like that on UK’s squad this year would have made all the difference.)

A great coach, but not for UK.

  25. Wednesday Says:

    23. Whether or not the item posted was a genuine rumor or an outright fabrication - as the news is being reported now it was completely wrong (7 yr / 28 million was what was being said?). To either fabricate a story or post a rumor that appears to be false in order to get new subscribers isn’t cool. I would very upset if I had been duped. I don’t think DB is a bad person but there was some poor judgement in that teaser.

  26. jon Says:

    # 7,8 and 9, do you know anything about him? like REALY basic stuff even? I’m not a big fan of Montgomery, but he left to coach the warriors in 04. He didn’t recruit the lopez twins, who were McD’s AA that you would love to have on your favorite team, and with the hole him-not being-the coach thing, stanford getting beat by louisville, is that really the reason you don’t want him?

  27. cool Says:

Isnt Montgomery the one who accused Billy D of cheating a few years ago?

  28. jon Says:

Billy D is a cheater. i accuse him of it everytime people ask me how florida turned it around. But Donovan, calipari and thompson are the only coaches who can turn the program around: Coaches who play up tempo, recruit well ( even if he did have to pay Kwame, at least it didn’t work out for him), and are pretty good at the x’s and o’s, really good in thompsons case.

  29. Wednesday Says:

Yeah Montgomery called BD here is an article that mentions it…

    http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/3672576/

  30. kyriver Says:

#26… the fact that your point is “do we really know anything about him” is the problem. This
fan base does not want “to get to know anybody”. It’s sad that I love college bball, watched
Stanford in Rupp a couple weeks, and evidentially didn’t care about the coach or bothered looking
at the bench. If he came and lost two games at UK, 60% of the fans would want him and Mitch gone
tomorrow. And if #24 is correct, forget about it.

  31. Walls Says:

    http://msn.foxsports.com/cbk/story/6124560

that has the quote from montgomery about donovan. also.. its an article from a few months back about donovan likely leaving for the nba.

  32. catcard202 Says:

MATT, “Hink” is a knowledgeable guy…especially when it comes to sports & his opinions…I used to work w/ him & had heated debates on everything sports related, on a daily basis… He makes some good points, most of the time..Only issue I ever held against him was the fact I see him as a “front-runner fan” (as you know, Hink is a Miami FB fan/UK BB fan/NFL Bears fan). Hell of a nice guy, but has a “hate him or love him” personality…There is no in BTWN!!! And as a UK fan, I love the way he ALWAYS gets in a “Louisville Sucks”; anytime he is on a call-in show!

You guys should SERIOUSLY consider giving him his own, SHORT “one fans opinion” segment on a daily-weekly basis on the Sports Mob…He’d definitely get the attention of listeners in the LOU area, I can promise you that!!!

  33. s-ram Says:

Arkansas might be talking to Montgomery according to an Arkansas message board (rivals).

    FWIW he just turned 60

  34. Gunch Says:

Ive actually said a few times that Ive wondered why his name hasnt come up. Not saying they should hire Montgomery, but just surprised he isnt on the radar. With him not having a job(that Im aware of) they could bring him in for an interview without having to ask permission. Has taken a team with tough admission requirments and recruited well and been to the final four. Maybe not the most exciting, and maybe more of a west coast guy, but if he had never left for the NBA, I would think he would register higher than a number of other guys.

  35. Jacob Adam Brooks Says:

#24, I don’t think you can judge a guys recruiting ability when he has to recruit athletes that have a 1400 or higher on their SAT. You’re going to lose a lot of possibilites with the standards that Stanford has. Even if a kid can get in, a lot dont want to because of the academic scrutiny they’ll be under at all times.

  37. Dr. Bob Says:

Montgomery is ANOTHER former UF coach. Can you guys quit?

  38. dgillespie Says:

Man, he doesn’t look 60. Maybe not a good idea. We need some youth.

  39. Anonymous Says:

Hello, Your site is great. Regards, Valintino Guxxi

  40. Jakob Says:

This is exactly what I expected to find out after reading the title Why no Talk of this Guy?. Thanks for informative article
