[Moderated by Matt Jones]

We dont follow Texas A&M basketball extensively here. I know, I know you folks have wanted more Aggie basketball coverage and we have disappointed you…..but its just not our bag. But if there was ever a day to cover Aggie basketball, it was yesterday. First, reports come out that Gillispie may go to Arkansas and that an offer has been made…..then reports are released that he will re-sign with Texas A&M and that extensive changes will be made to the basketball program…..and then as the day ends, we find out that Gillispie may be holding out to see about the Kentucky job. If so, I find the news very interesting. It may mean that Gillispie believes he is a serious contender and wants to see how the Donovan drama ends…..and from my angle, I say great. Gillispie is not my first choice, but he isnt my last either…..and I think he could be very successful here.
But of course, this is Aggie basketball…..who knows what today will bring?

He would be my second choice behind Donovan, so I find this news comforting.
March 30th, 2007 at 10:45 am
agreed, gillispie is an excellent second choice. he may not have the super pedigree yet but he is young and clearly a workaholic if there ever was one.
March 30th, 2007 at 10:46 am
anybody who has worked with hal mumme is fine by me!
March 30th, 2007 at 10:47 am
So who does old Frank get as Plan B, C, D etc in Razorback Heaven?
March 30th, 2007 at 10:47 am
I am split between Wright and Gilespie as my second choice.
March 30th, 2007 at 10:47 am
seriously though, he’s my second choice due to the fact he’s improved every year at every job he’s had and god knows uk needs some improvement.
March 30th, 2007 at 10:49 am
He was interviewed during the 3 point/dunk contest last night on ESPN. Was that live or prerecorded? If live, does anyone know what was said?
March 30th, 2007 at 10:52 am
ricdix…..he something to the extent of the A&M AD doesn’t wait to be reactive, he is always proactive, the board of trustees was going to meet tonight (I think, regardless it will be soon) and he intimated that a new contract would be approved at that time.
Basically said he didn’t ask for it but the AD was being forward thinking and was trying to lock him up before someone else came calling.
March 30th, 2007 at 10:57 am
bg not a bad 2nd choice after #1 bd
March 30th, 2007 at 11:00 am
He talked about how he was looking forward to next year. It was live but as we all know coach talk means little
March 30th, 2007 at 11:03 am
I still think he would be my third choice…behind Billy D.
and then Calipari.
March 30th, 2007 at 11:04 am
Gillispie rolls off the tongue better than Tom Crean, Mike Brey
March 30th, 2007 at 11:04 am
At least we know that he wants to be here!
March 30th, 2007 at 11:12 am
Pelphrey a KY guy!
March 30th, 2007 at 11:20 am
Matt, dude, you need to hyphenated “re-sign” since “resign” has a distinctly different meaning.
3) Tell it to the UK football program a few years ago.
March 30th, 2007 at 11:20 am
Where’s the love?
March 30th, 2007 at 11:33 am
No matter who is the name of the dat, can we please put the John Pelphrey “candidacy” to bed? I don’t care if he is
from Kentucky, played at Kentucky, or if his ancestors founded Kentucky. You do not ascend to the Kentucky job from
South Alabama. He’s still a mid-major turnaround, or a revival of a formerly good program away from being a viable candidate.
It should take more than pedigree and a bad haircut to be considered for the gig.
March 30th, 2007 at 11:34 am
Mike Brey rolls off the tongue about as well at Mitch unemployed does
March 30th, 2007 at 11:36 am
Tom, it’s not big deal that UK doesn’t like us. I mean as long as we have Digger behind us we will both be ok.
March 30th, 2007 at 11:37 am
Tom, Mike…you guys are losers.
March 30th, 2007 at 11:37 am
I would take Gillispie as the coach. My first choice is Donovan.
Look at what Gillispie has done at his other coaching jobs.
Very Impressive and I would feel good with him as a coach.
March 30th, 2007 at 11:38 am
…quiz on Kentukcy pressure:
http://www.thedesertsun.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20070330/COLUMN S16/703300376/1235/sports
March 30th, 2007 at 11:39 am
Or I suppose it could also be “Kentucky” pressure
I can’t even spell my own state (damn Ohio State education!!)
March 30th, 2007 at 11:47 am
I like him and Wright. Gillespie is a good old KY name. As long as it is not Tom “Lil Turd” Crean. What a freakin joke of a coach.
March 30th, 2007 at 11:51 am
If true, this is really exciting. Although I think Donovan currently has the “rockstar” aura that this program needs and is therefore my first choice, I actually think that Gillispie is the better coach and would ultimately be more successful here. The “UK pressure” wouldn’t phase Gillispie because he is just as fanatical about b-ball as we are!!
March 30th, 2007 at 11:55 am
I just Hope If It IS Billy G that he will listen to fans a play a little more up tempo. I am tired of sleeping through UK games…
March 30th, 2007 at 12:09 pm
I am skeptical of Billy G because of his style of play, but you can’t doubt his success. And yes, I know he didn’t recruit Acie Law, but he recruited the other kids to a relatively no-name school to have enough talent for what was a top 6 team and could’ve been a final 4 team. So I’m torn on Gillespie. But I’d be happy to find out about him. If our next coach is Donovan, Wright or Gillespie, I’ll be happy.
March 30th, 2007 at 12:12 pm
About the coach listening to fans…sure. Maybe Mitch can put in a voting system at Rupp Arena (a la American Idol) to determine the plays coming out of time outs. The fans must approve coaching all strategy by popular demand.
March 30th, 2007 at 12:15 pm
ummm, if the coach is not making the fans happy, then thats where the pressure comes from. a Good coach knows this. A good coach will adapt his style to something both THey are comfortable with AND that will please fans (And thus eliminate pressure) Ignoring fans is what gets you the kind of heat Tubby found himself in.
March 30th, 2007 at 12:18 pm
Billy G is an awsome 2nd choice……..in fact i see him tied with donovan in my opinion. He eats and sleeps college basketball….sounds like we might get along.

I still say the order is (or at least should be)
1 Billie D
2 Calipari (it’s not dead yet I’m tellin ya)
3 Gillispie (I think you guys underestimate his style, that team could play either way)
4 No need for any other’s becasue 1 of these 3 will take it.
Crean, Wright, Few are all the same guy aren’t they? Pelphrey and Ford would be Matt Doherty reincarnated.
Anything different than this is CRAZY!!!
March 30th, 2007 at 12:26 pm
From the article #32 linked:
–
“A guy from Kentucky just told me that my name had come up for the job,” Syracuse Coach Jim Boeheim said, laughing. “I told him if Kentucky had about $8 million a year, I might consider it.” He paused. “You know, actually, that’s not true. I wouldn’t take that job for $8 million a year.”
–
And we wouldn’t have you, you whiny twat.
March 30th, 2007 at 12:28 pm
32 Please step away from the computer, 1st rule of common sense says never put Great Article and Feinpuke in the same post.
March 30th, 2007 at 12:28 pm
Hopefully if “Gillispie” comes here we’ll all remember to spell his name right. I know we had it easy for years with coach “Smeth”… Doh!
March 30th, 2007 at 12:28 pm
Agreed with 27
March 30th, 2007 at 12:31 pm
The only reason I signed the deal with Memphis is I thought Billie D was a done deal. Offer me that pot of gold and I am yours UK. Then we can start winning big, by the way can you get me my Rolodex I need to go lock up PP and Jai.
March 30th, 2007 at 12:32 pm
Billy D reportedly texted a recruit recently saying he is staying at Florida….
http://www.kentucky.com/276/story/30080.html
March 30th, 2007 at 12:32 pm
#33,
If Billy G CAN play either style, then he moves up on my list. I have no problem with him or his teams, but UK needs a change and getting a Tubby clone would be bad IMHO. Billy D. Is #1 on everyones list because he can bring in a style of play and excitment to the program thats been missing for years. I suppose we will just have to wait and see what happens…lol
Calipari won’t be it though..sorry thats one I definately oppose..
March 30th, 2007 at 12:33 pm
39 Your post name was never more appropriate because that is when we all heard that story.
March 30th, 2007 at 12:34 pm
I don’t get the panting for Gillispie. What’s he done to deserve the UK job? He has just signed his FIRST five-star player, from his own backyard. Rick Barnes has been hauling them in for years from all over the country.
March 30th, 2007 at 12:35 pm
#39 old news, from my understanding it is Standard procedure and not even done by Billy D himself. But by one of his personal assistants.
Oh and it didn’t say he was staying at Fl, it said he looked forward to coaching him next year…kind of a big difference
March 30th, 2007 at 12:36 pm
42 Because Gillispie’s rise reminds me and a lot of people of a young Pitino (sans the Armani) while Barnes reminds me too much of Bill Frieder or Joe B.
March 30th, 2007 at 12:38 pm
Yeah I take the text message story with a grain of salt….
March 30th, 2007 at 12:39 pm
By the way Bill Frieder and Joe B equal great recruiter, bad coach.
March 30th, 2007 at 12:40 pm
#43, Thats the point in a way. BArnes has had Ample talent and little Success, Billy G has had very little talent and turned that into success.
Billy G. has done more with less, so to speak. Barnes is a bad choice int hat he just can’t coach..lol
March 30th, 2007 at 12:44 pm
This can’t be right…Al Horford said “nobody” wanted the Kentuck job.
March 30th, 2007 at 12:47 pm
The interesting thing about Billy G holding off on reupping his contract though is that it means UK hasn’t locked up Donovan like people were reporting a few days ago. UK must be in talks with Billy G. as part of plan B and we are in a holding pattern until Mondayish.
Personally I think we will get Donovan but that is based on my perception of him having an ego that needs to be at a place like UK.
March 30th, 2007 at 12:49 pm
Yea, for all of the talk that nobody wants this job (48) and that we aren’t an elite program anymore doea anyone else notice that EVERY OTHER JOB that is open seems to be in a holding pattern until we fill the position. And every radio, sports news show etc. is TALKING about it.
Eat it Katz!!!!!!
March 30th, 2007 at 12:56 pm
Here is my pick and I really think has a shot at the job…
Ernie Kent
Five postseason appearances. A Pac-10 title and a Pac-10 tournament title. The NCAA Elite Eight. Two NIT Final Fours. Three NBA First Round Draft choices.
In just eight years, 2002 Pac-10 Coach of the Year Ernie Kent has taken the University of Oregon to heights not seen since Basketball Hall of Famer Howard Hobson was the Tall Firs’ head coach.
He is the only man to have led Oregon to three NCAA Tournament appearances, as well as Pac-10 regular season and tournament titles.
March 30th, 2007 at 12:57 pm
A good coach uses the system he knows and believes in and doesnt let fans dictate what he does. Im not defending Tubby just coaches in general. Tubby (just for an example) would not do well using a system other than the one he does because that is what he does. A good coach finds the pieces that compliment his system and wins with that system. Slow or fast it doesnt matter but he does not let fans do the coaching for him.
March 30th, 2007 at 1:06 pm
Gillespie’s name being alive helps us with Donovan as well, because Donovan’s decision could be impacted by the quality of coach we’ll get if he doesn’t come here. If he sees a Big Blue storm brewing, he might want to avoid it by joining us before it strikes him.
March 30th, 2007 at 1:21 pm
we’re going to end up with a good coach. The only thing is the impact will be more immediate with Donovan since we’ll get great recruits with him. Either way, basketball will get better in this state, and the fact that it will end up better just re-assures us that it was time for Tubby to go.
March 30th, 2007 at 1:23 pm
I just wish Florida would lose, so that we could not something. This has been a stressful-ass week.
I do like Gillespie, though. He would be an adequate second choice, I think.
March 30th, 2007 at 1:29 pm
I’d take Squiggy over the Shermanator any day. Check the link, its pretty damn funny:
http://www.wildcatfanreport.com/?p=59#comments
March 30th, 2007 at 1:43 pm
#4 - I think Arkansas is now looking into Mitch Mustain’s high school assistant principal for the basketball position.
March 30th, 2007 at 1:45 pm
Im just glad Calipari hasnt signed yet…we will not get Donavan, which does suck, but Gillespie and Calipari are my favorites….
March 30th, 2007 at 1:45 pm
Billy Donovan is scheduled to speak at Marshall University’s Big Green Banquet
on April 4th - in Patterson’s home town.
How interesting.
March 30th, 2007 at 2:07 pm
24) It is a good Kentucky name, just ask me!
Don’t worry Boeheim, you will never have to worry about your name coming up.
You suck, even with the Carmelo championship under your belt.
Mike Montgomery, live it, learn it, know it.
I like him.
March 30th, 2007 at 2:18 pm
Here is a link to Mike Montgomery’s info.
http://www.nba.com/coachfile/mike_montgomery/
March 30th, 2007 at 2:19 pm
Don’t care about the NBA stats, he can recruit and is spotless.
March 30th, 2007 at 2:25 pm
Your very defensive. I was just giving people the opportunity to see his sucky stats.
March 30th, 2007 at 2:27 pm
And the link has a lot of his college stats.
March 30th, 2007 at 2:33 pm
Not defensive,no proble with the link, doing what he did at Stanford and what they can accept as far as student athletes is pretty damn good.
March 30th, 2007 at 2:37 pm
Texas a & m’s scout page is reporting that The Houston Chronical say’s BG has just accepted new contract.
March 30th, 2007 at 2:38 pm
I’m just not as enthralled with Billy G. as others. His style is pretty rough and I wonder how the top notch recruits would like playing for me.
Plus, how many real good seasons has he had at AM?
I mean there was Acie Law and then what?
Just skeptical, that’s all.
March 30th, 2007 at 2:38 pm
Gillispie would not be a bad second choice…and Wright and Cal would be up there too.
March 30th, 2007 at 2:40 pm
Wright is a guy I have always been impressed with, not Cal.
March 30th, 2007 at 2:43 pm
39. Billy may do it himself or he may have an aide do it but there is nothing automatic about the content of a text message discussing rumors and who at Florida would have sent that message to a recruit without Billy D or a top assistant approving it. You can’t even argue about the specific language because Allen could have been paraphrasing his understanding of the gist of the message. No reason to think the reporter read it or Allen attempted to repeat it word for word.
March 30th, 2007 at 3:01 pm
Can you say… DeAndre Jordan?
March 30th, 2007 at 3:04 pm
66 - curious article (HERE…. says BG and A&M have agreed in principal, the board of regents has approved, but “The A&M Board of Regents is said to be cautiously optimistic Gillispie will indeed sign it.” That plus a caption on the image that says BG will stay with A&M.
March 30th, 2007 at 3:12 pm
ESPN News just had breaking news about how UK is set to offer Donovan the job once the season is over. I didn’t catch it all so not sure how much and for how long.
March 30th, 2007 at 3:16 pm
73 - article is HERE -
“… at least $2.8 million per season and as much as $3.5 million with performance-based incentives.”
March 30th, 2007 at 3:16 pm
gillispie re-signed with texas a&m according to espn, $500K raise per year
http://sports.espn.go.com/ncb/news/story?id=2819125&campaign=rss&sourc e=ESPNHeadlines
March 30th, 2007 at 3:19 pm
It also says the duration is 7 years- then rehashes alot of what we already know.
March 30th, 2007 at 3:20 pm
Sorry, #76 was related to Donovan article in #74
March 30th, 2007 at 3:20 pm
76. He hasn’t signed yet and won’t until next week the article says so he’s still available….
March 30th, 2007 at 3:21 pm
#75 - Gillespie won’t sign until next week after he returns from the Final Four (paragraph 2 of the article)
March 30th, 2007 at 3:22 pm
This is a truly frightening quote from this article:
“People close to Donovan said he has received no contact from Kentucky officials, nor have his agents. “
March 30th, 2007 at 3:24 pm
And it makes his comments about how it can’t control what UK decides to do make more sense. At this point no one has even bothered calling him or his agents.
March 30th, 2007 at 3:25 pm
I am absolutely in shock at that. We should have been on the phone with his agent night and day.
March 30th, 2007 at 3:26 pm
22) Pretty good, 8 out of 9 were amusing.
March 30th, 2007 at 3:27 pm
32) Makes you wonder if the media is covering the Finale Four or is the larger story the UK hunt for a coach?
March 30th, 2007 at 3:27 pm
it does say “People close to Donovan”… but nothing from the agents themselves who more than likely would keep something like that to themselves, ala Tubby’s agents for 6 weeks?
March 30th, 2007 at 3:30 pm
People close to Donovan is speak for his agents commenting off the record I imagine….
March 30th, 2007 at 3:43 pm
Anyway the whole article is about how UK will contact him with the offer after his season is over and UK confirmed that. Maybe these things take more time to get together than I understand but it’s disappointing if true.
March 30th, 2007 at 4:06 pm
Tubby ascended to the Ky. throne with very little
head coaching experience and coming from mid-majors.
Tubby also won with someone else’s players at Tulsa,
Georgia and his first year at Kentucky!
Donovan was only 31 when he went to Florida. Never rule
out youth. Somebody like Few, Crean, Brey, Izzo, Wright
might come to U.K. and fall flat on their face.
March 31st, 2007 at 11:52 am
