An official FOC (Friend of Clyde) and I spoke this weekend and he told me that our friend Billy the Clyde is has talked with Texas Pan-American about potentially becoming their new coach. According to the FOC, Gillispie has actually talked with the school a couple of times during its coaching search and that there is mutual interest between the two parties. At this time, Texas Pan-American is one of only a couple of schools with a coaching job open and if Gillispie truly wants to be a coach next year, it may be his only option. The school has apparently publically listed four finalists, none of which were Gillispie. But it has hoped for a “big name” that could trump those finalists, and Gillispie might fit the bill. The school is one of the last remaining “Independents” in Division I, is located in the great state of Texas (Edinburg) and apparently likes to burn things. Is Gillispie the man for the job? Well here is the school’s job opening that ran on a number of job posting sites:
The University of Texas – Pan American, an NCAA Division I Institution, is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Head Basketball Coach. This is a full-time 12 month position. The incumbent will lead in the organization, management and administration of an NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball program. Review of resumes will begin immediately. Applications will be accepted until the position is filled. Minority candidates are encouraged to apply. Responsibilities include but are not limited to: Organize and direct all aspects of the NCAA Division I Basketball program. Contest scheduling and event management. Practice and game coaching. Recruiting student athletes. Monitoring of the academic progress of the program’s student athletes. Conditioning and summer camps. Community involvement
Interesting….Clyde may not like the community development part, but besides that, it may be a good fit. One has to think it is a longshot for Gillispie to end up out in that neck of the woods and the smart money says he wont be there. But the man loves to coach, so you never know. But a word of advice to the UTPA fans (both of you) if Clyde indeed comes, load up on Dr. Pepper and dont expect any zone….

If Billy is smart, he’ll wait until a lower tier Big 12 job opens up.
They still love him out there and he’ll have a legit shot at building something viable.

Pack your bags, Landon Slone.
May 18th, 2009 at 10:52 am
Is that a mule mascot? BG might fit right in.
May 18th, 2009 at 10:52 am
a couple of those cheerleaders look pretty nice
May 18th, 2009 at 10:53 am
Last season — Texas Pan-American ended the season with a RPI of 329 — out of 343 Div. 1 schools…
Go Billy Clyde!
May 18th, 2009 at 10:54 am
Wonder if they liked getting whipped??
May 18th, 2009 at 10:57 am
This year’s squad consisted of all players of mexican/aztec american heritage. I hope Clyde can get along with them.
May 18th, 2009 at 10:57 am
If Gillispie comes, a note to the UTPA fans…. MOVE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
May 18th, 2009 at 10:57 am
UMMMMMMMM Cal doesnt like zone either!
May 18th, 2009 at 10:57 am
#3 no it is a burro
May 18th, 2009 at 10:59 am
Mutual Friend??? Is your Mutual Friend a Bar Tender? JUST KIDDING.
I hope that team is tough enough and them sorts of things.
May 18th, 2009 at 11:00 am
Calipari said he didnt play a lot of zone but that he would if the situation was right. Gillispie plays no zone ever.
May 18th, 2009 at 11:00 am
10) So Billy Clyde could be the coach of a bunch of asses…that is way too nice a fit.
May 18th, 2009 at 11:01 am
9…. Cal may not like to play zone either, but at least the purpose of his offense is to get the ball in the hoop! Not to pass the ball around the perimeter till the shot clock winds down to 5….
May 18th, 2009 at 11:03 am
If their RPI is 329, does that mean they will be playing similar teams . . . because BCG was like 0-3 against such teams while at UK. Hmmm.
May 18th, 2009 at 11:12 am
15 — You are correct. —
Here are the RPI for some of the tough schools Clyde lost to while at UK…
VMI — 128
Gardner Webb — 218
San Diego — 193
So yes, UTPA would probably get whupped by all of those teams as well as by Stony Brook (197) and Longwood (297)…
Good Luck Billy and Good Riddance!!
May 18th, 2009 at 11:12 am
At least Calipari said that he would play a zone if he needed too, BCG said that he would NEVER play a zone and he NEVER played a ZONE while at Kentucky… BCG would fit right in with a burro as a mascot, jackass for a jackass school…
May 18th, 2009 at 11:17 am
Just please, if he takes a job, let us play them next year. Please.
I didn’t care about a rematch with Tubby, but I’d like to whip Gillispie by 50 and make him shake
Cal’s hand.
May 18th, 2009 at 11:18 am
The Buro is a symbol of pride, heritage and mystique in the mexican/aztec american culture. Please be consideration and not ethnocentric when you refer to the burro. Quite soon the burro will stand side by side with the bald eagle as co-symbols of this great mulitnational country.
May 18th, 2009 at 11:23 am
I don’t think that there is any ill will directed towards the pride, heritage and mystique of the mexican/aztec american heritage or culture… with us talking about the burro when referring to BCG…
May 18th, 2009 at 11:24 am
#19–You think so, Pollyana?
May 18th, 2009 at 11:26 am
why in the hell is Frosty Tips taking and asking for donations to buy the piece of floor where Christian Laettner hit the game winning shot against UK in Spectrum?
May 18th, 2009 at 11:30 am
does anyone know how coach cal’s twitter followers doubled in nearly 3 days. Last Wednesday he had 25000 followers and now has over 50000 followers. what spurred this type of number to develop in 3 days?
May 18th, 2009 at 11:33 am
I was getting twitters from Coach, but it has quit, where is the link to sign up for twitter?
May 18th, 2009 at 11:34 am
Non-BCG question here, actually relevant to the current UK basketball team: why hasn’t Jodie dropped out of the draft yet? If he just wants to go through the workouts that’s fine, but I am worried that it could be John Wall-esque, in that the longer he waits, the smaller the chances are that he comes back
May 18th, 2009 at 11:39 am
22) They want to buy it & burn it in a bon-fire at madness in Commonwealth this fall……
May 18th, 2009 at 11:45 am
A jackass as a mascot fits you perfectly BCG.
May 18th, 2009 at 11:49 am
Calipari says he will play zone when necessary, but Memphis fans were complaining that he only did so when they were blowing out teams just to appease the fans who said he would never play zone. So we will see how that goes, pretty sure with out talent I don’t give a sh*t if he ever plays zone, that honestly was not one of the biggest problems we had, and now that we don’t have as many black holes on offense and ghost defenders on defense, we should be fine.
May 18th, 2009 at 11:52 am
Matt,
I’ve been to UTPA, this place is perfect for BCG. Plenty of spring breakers around for BCG to “party with.”
May 18th, 2009 at 11:54 am
It’s funny how everyone(except lexslamman) was loving BCG before we went down to Ole Miss and the wheels came off the wagon.
I liked BCG, I think Calipari is a much much better fit and the caliber of coach UK deserves. I think it’s Barnhart’s fault for not apparently not going after him before hiring BCG.
May 18th, 2009 at 12:04 pm
30. I didn’t particularly LIKE him really, but I ALWAYS supported him up until those 3 home losses. That’s my job as a fan, support the team and the coach.
May 18th, 2009 at 12:15 pm
Hey, I’m a UK grad from ’81 and my son goes to this school and I live down there! Don’t dis the school (Bronco’s by the way) for talking to him, we hired him!
May 18th, 2009 at 12:18 pm
I didn’t see “Be the face of the program” in that job description so it would be a super fit. I wonder how many players the toilets down there can hold?
May 18th, 2009 at 12:23 pm
I wish Billy G the best. I do not hold ill feelings towards him or his future. I just am glad we landed John Calipari.
May 18th, 2009 at 12:27 pm
ANF if I hear the words “a good fit” or “better fit” or “not a good fit” I think I will Puke. What about a “tight fit”, or a “loose fit”, or “cross threaded fit”. A metric fit is different from a National Pipe Thread fit as well!
May 18th, 2009 at 1:11 pm
Those players will play with UNBELIEVABLE passion. I think they will work hard and play very very very tough, or whatever.
May 18th, 2009 at 1:37 pm
Well from the picture looks like Billy could find other things (cheerleaders) to do besides coaching basketball.
May 18th, 2009 at 2:11 pm
I remain – and will always remain – a Billy Gillispie supporter. I wish him nothing but the best and wish him tremendous success where ever he may go. I really hope that he waits out a year though because I know that other good division I schools perceptions of him are not the way that it appears UK fans hope it to be.
So, he didnt “fit” with Kentucky – not many do, IMO. Nothing to kill his career over. Billy will be just fine and I hope he gets himself a championship before its all over.
May 18th, 2009 at 2:34 pm
Gag Choke Puke
May 18th, 2009 at 4:02 pm
Where ever he goes, they better be willing to both play hard, and compete hard.
May 18th, 2009 at 6:12 pm
Good luck Billy Clyde! I am really, really, really going to miss your sense of glumor. I guess I will have to get 5% tougher.
May 18th, 2009 at 9:21 pm
I will drink to that!!!! Bottoms up Billy!!
May 19th, 2009 at 12:26 am
I think Billy needs to coach somewhere. If he waits to long to get another job, he will have a hard time landing even a mid major coaching job. He is going to have to prove again that he can be a good coach. Maybe his next job he will learn that he has to be flexible and adjust to his teams’talent level.
