Outside of the Xavier Henry to Kansas commitment, things are a little slow in terms of news. But, Jody Demling is reporting that former UK commit GJ Vilarino will be visiting Gonzaga this weekend. He’s also drawing interest from Virginia Commonwealth and Baylor.

Best of luck to GJ.
April 23rd, 2009 at 2:01 pm
Good for him. Gonzaga seems like a nice fit for the kid.
April 23rd, 2009 at 2:02 pm
Good for him. He and Dennis could form a nice back-couirt duo at Baylor.
April 23rd, 2009 at 2:02 pm
I wish when GJ had is conversation with Calipari that GJ would have
said he would have walked on. I really wanted to see GJ at Kentucky.
I think he has a lot of realistic potential to be be a very good player.
April 23rd, 2009 at 2:04 pm
5th!
April 23rd, 2009 at 2:04 pm
Kich as* GJ! Good luck young man.
April 23rd, 2009 at 2:05 pm
GJ and Dennis are kids to get really excited about if they come to your
program. However, they are not UK caliber with Calipari here.
That is how far we come in just 3 weeks. 4 weeks ago we were excited
about GJ coming and we would have pumped if we got Dennis.
Now we are talking about Wall, Bledsoe, Knight, Pressey, Jackson, and
other elite pgs
April 23rd, 2009 at 2:05 pm
I heard he was taking a look at Utah State as well. He has a friend from the Houston area already going to play there. I think GJ would thrive at a mid-major like USU.
April 23rd, 2009 at 2:05 pm
#4 - I too really wanted to see him play.
April 23rd, 2009 at 2:05 pm
I think he will be a good player. He’ll need a place where he won’t get recruited over every year in order to get the court time to develop though. He’d never break through at UK with Cal going after the John Wall’s and Brandon Knight’s of the World.
April 23rd, 2009 at 2:05 pm
what a difference 3 weeks makes
April 23rd, 2009 at 2:07 pm
11) you are absolutely correct.
April 23rd, 2009 at 2:08 pm
#4 and #9
Watch Fox Sports South West at 2AM next Novemeber and you can watch him average 4 points a game all you want.
Cal is here now…if you aint a top 50 recruit take your game to Gonzagaville.
April 23rd, 2009 at 2:10 pm
Hey Biesner, why don’t you remove that stupid KU news loop post down there. It just crashed my computer. Plus….he went to KU! Who cares?
April 23rd, 2009 at 2:10 pm
14 - careful now, CJ Leslie is a potential future commit for Cal, and he isn’t “top 50″ yet.
April 23rd, 2009 at 2:11 pm
take off the KU propaganda machine please.
April 23rd, 2009 at 2:12 pm
12) LOL
April 23rd, 2009 at 2:14 pm
7) Pressy?
April 23rd, 2009 at 2:20 pm
is anybody else hoping lawson comes back?? i have a bad feeling that is all wall is waitin for….. because if you think roy williams hasnt contacted wall since the final four then you are crazy.
April 23rd, 2009 at 2:20 pm
4 weeks ago we needed to get GJ on campus ASAP, Bledsoe was a must get,
and we were pumped for Koner Tucker. 4 weeks ago we were a low as could
be and just about addition would have been a pleasant upgrade.
4 weeks later we are in a position that at the end of next season we could lose:
Wall
Meeks
Cousins
Stevenson
Harris
4 weeks ago we were desperate. 4 weeks later we could be lossing two lottery
picks and another NBA pick at the end of next season.
Last 11 years would have suggested lossing that after next season means
we are rebuilding.
Yet we would still be returning after next season is over:
Pilgrim - Sr
Miller - Jr
Liggins - Jr
Dodson - Jr
Orton - Soph
Hood - Soph
all 6 have a chance to realistically play in the NBA one day.
We went from a team 4 weeks ago that was still looking at another rebuilding year.
4 weeks later we are looking at putting at least a sweet 16 team on the
court, lossing 3 elite players at the end of next season, but instead of
rebuilding after lossing 3 elite players after next season, we will
be reloading and probably have an even better team the following year.
So why didn’t we go afer Calipari two years ago?
April 23rd, 2009 at 2:23 pm
#20 Nope I hope Lawson goes pro and I am betting he does.
I don’t think UNC is in the mix for Wall. I say finding away to jump
straight to the NBA is more of player in Wall decision than UNC.
With that said, I think there is a very very very slim chance he goes
to the NBA, so that tells you what chance I think UNC has
ZERO - but that is just my opinion and when it comes to guessing recruiting
I am more wrong than right
April 23rd, 2009 at 2:23 pm
21) The real question should be… why didn’t we go after Calipari 12 years ago?
April 23rd, 2009 at 2:23 pm
21) Beacause he didn’t have the National Title Game on his resume yet, Derrick Rose had not been a Lottery pick yet, and Mitch peed himself when Billy D & Barnes said No.
April 23rd, 2009 at 2:23 pm
He looks scared….good luck GJ and thanks for opening up a rooster spot!
GO CATS!!
April 23rd, 2009 at 2:25 pm
25) The kid left, no need to pile on him.
April 23rd, 2009 at 2:26 pm
21. We didn’t get Calipari two years ago because Mitch Barnhart’s lack of imagination led him to panic and latch onto a redneck with a reputation for recruiting, because we have a lot of rednecks in our fan-base who were griping about recruiting. It seemed like a natural fit on the surface, but Barnhart should have looked deeper.
April 23rd, 2009 at 2:30 pm
the dodson kid looks like a stud but being a fan of uk ive learned not to get excited about juco players! people were thrilled about getting harrellson and we saw what he has to offer so i hope im wrong but hopefully dodson develops into a corey brewer type player.
April 23rd, 2009 at 2:32 pm
If Barnhardt had hired Calipari two years ago we would have
Henry
Cousins
Dodson
Wall
Had Evans this years team and he was leaning towards returning to Memphis
for a 2nd year until Calipari left of UK. We would have had two years
of Evans. Everyone on the team now would have had 2 years of Elite Coaching,
Elite Development, and two years under this style of play.
How much money did Mitch cost us by not getting Calipari two years ago.
Sorry I am not the biggest Mitch fan but I do have a renewed faith and trust
in Mitch right now
April 23rd, 2009 at 2:32 pm
Or what if Pitino had never left? Wonder what kind of shape the program would be in now?
April 23rd, 2009 at 2:34 pm
23) 12 years ago? Calipari going into his second season with the Nets and UK likely didn’t want to be burned by the NBA
again. At this point in their careers both Pitino and Calipari hadn’t realized they belong in college basketball.
April 23rd, 2009 at 2:34 pm
I am having doubts now….With Lawson going to the NBA i have this feeling Wall might not come here.
April 23rd, 2009 at 2:35 pm
What heppened to Pat Forde’s report on the Pitino drama? It’s still not up on ESPN…
April 23rd, 2009 at 2:35 pm
“happened”
April 23rd, 2009 at 2:36 pm
#28 Calipari isn’t Tubby or Gillispie and he said the main reason
he came to UK other than it was his dream was because at UK he can
recruit the best of the best.
He offered Dennis a scholorship to Memphis but not Kentucky. I am sure
he had some players wanting to follow him but it looks like he told them
no. There are some future players he was going to offer at Memphis or already
had that he won’t offer to play at Kentucky.
Yet he thinks Dodson is good enough to play at Kentucky. That tells me
all I need to know.
April 23rd, 2009 at 2:36 pm
Wall just needs to sign already. My productivity at work is zero and it is starting to become a problem.
With Wall on board (or elsewhere) at least I can get back to work.
Good luck to GJ . . . the infamous Billy first get. It will be interesting to see how he pans out. I’ve never thought much about the over-hyped Zags and it would seem that GJ will fit in there.
April 23rd, 2009 at 2:37 pm
I really hope Dodson turns out to be an excellent player or steady role player. However, I wanted to clear up some misconceptions I have seen concerning his stats from his one year of Junior College. He averaged 15.7 points, 5.3 rebounds and more than 2 steals (i believe). However, he turned the ball over almost 3 times a game which worries me a little and shot 34% from three as opposed to the 43% I have seen mentioned from high school. 34% is still better than 50% from two-point range and better than several of our current players…just wanted to bring some perspective.
April 23rd, 2009 at 2:38 pm
With regard to expectations about Dodson, I wouldn’t get too carried away. Look at Galloway. Just saying, it may take a year to get there.
April 23rd, 2009 at 2:43 pm
as long as the guy can shoot thats all we need, if we get wall we will have all the pentetrating we need. we just need someone opposite meeks.
April 23rd, 2009 at 2:46 pm
I guess there is always a chance that Wall could end up at UNC but
I HIGHLY doubt it. I really doubt they are a major player for Wall.
Here is what I think it all comes down to: Wall knows that coach K
and Roy are two of the all-time greatest. He knows they will develop
him and teach him.
He knows that Calipari is an elite coach and will develop and teach him.
What he doesn’t know if Roy or K can make him a top 3 lottery pick.
He knows that Cal can.
Now will either of the 3 coaches make him that kind of player? We don’t
know, we seen bust before.
but when Cal is the only one has put a guard #1 in the draft and is the
only one of the three that plays a style that allows him to showcase
ALL of his talents/skills. Like Calipari says “My style unleashes players”
Don’t you think it is to big of risk for Wall’s future for him not to
come to UK for Calipari?
What if he isn’t able to catch on to coack K or Roy’s system as well?
What if whatever it is that Cal does in developing elite guards, he doesn’t
get with K or Roy?
To many “WHAT IFs” for Wall to gamble with his future by not going to
play for Calipari.
Think about it - he is probably going to pan out wherever he goes but
do you think he wants to take the risk of things not working out the
way he planned under coach K or Roy Williams - when all signs during his
recruiting lead to the 1 fact, Calipari is the closestest thing to a
sure thing when it comes to Elite PGs wanting to reach their dreams
April 23rd, 2009 at 2:46 pm
Best of luck to GJ
April 23rd, 2009 at 2:48 pm
i think taht dodson is going to surprise alot of people. if Cal didn’t he could play he would NOT be here. Look at dennis as an example. Though i do think that Carolina may try and jump into the Wall sweepstakes, since Lawson just declared. Hope I am wrong though
April 23rd, 2009 at 2:49 pm
*that
April 23rd, 2009 at 2:51 pm
I thought it wasnt comfirmed DD commit yet
April 23rd, 2009 at 2:53 pm
i know the draft will be much deeper next year but i think patterson is crazy is he doesnt come back and learn how to play like a guard/forward. his only offense is a right hand hook and nobody wants a 6″7 power forward. i think he could move up in the draft next year if scouts see that he can put the ball on the floor and knock down 3’s, because he already has the athletic body for the NBA.
April 23rd, 2009 at 2:54 pm
#38 what do you mean look at Galloway?
Maybe those UK fans who had really high expectations for Galloway should
maybe change their expectations based on reality. Fact is any half knowledgable
avg. fan should and would have looked at Galloway for what he is before he
stepped foot on campus: Tall athletic quick guard, who can’t shoot, and dribbles
with his head down.
Galloway meet my expectations for him, except for the fact that Gillispie held
him back for whatever stupid reason.
I still think Galloway is can be a good role player at a school like UK next year. You
got to have those kind of players.
My expectations for Dodson are much higher than Galloways for many reasons:
1) Who recruited him to UK. Means a lot more when Calipari offers a player knowing
the type of players he can get. That means something
2) Dodson can handle the ball much better than Galloway
3) Taller than Galloway
4) Shoot better than Galloway
5) Finish at the rim better than Galloway
Expectations is the failure or success of a player. Expectations is the failure
or success of the fan placing the expectations knowledge of the game.
Dodson played avg 15ppg game last year on team that all the other 4 starters
are going to MAJOR D-1 schools.
April 23rd, 2009 at 2:55 pm
sorry jumping the gun with dodson. but the kid is a stud and i hope he arrives on campus
April 23rd, 2009 at 2:59 pm
#45 yeah but the higher you drafted the more likely a team will stick
with you longer while you develop because they are paying you more.
Your right about another year but heck if that was the case it would
benefit EVERY future NBA player to stay a WHOLE 4 years in college so
that way they would be as fully developed physically, talent wise, and mentally
before heading into the NBA
unfortuntly that isn’t the case when it comes to the draft.
and if you want a chance to stay in the NBA long enough to develop into a
career player, the chances dramtically increase the higher you’re drafted
Now Patterson staying two more seasons might be a smart move but I doubt
he will do that. However, that would be to his best benefit staying two years
April 23rd, 2009 at 3:02 pm
and we people say the draft will be much deeper next year, they
really mean it will be that much deeper next year.
Plus the kind of big men in next years draft are rarity and coveted
by NBA teams. Even if Patterson is more ready than say a young Favors,
Favors will still get drafted ahead and that goes for a lot more big
men as well.
NBA GMs have been eyeing next years draft for awhile now because of
the quality of rare big men that will be in it
April 23rd, 2009 at 3:02 pm
most players dont have as many holes in there game as he does after a year or two of college also.
April 23rd, 2009 at 3:03 pm
we all had high expectations for last year. But we can thank “Whiskey Clyde” for desroying not only our expectations but also those of the players. Harrelson should have been on the floor a hell of a lot more along with a few others, as some should have stayed off the floor or at least not starting (porter) as Save said, Oh what a difference 4 weeks make!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Rupp will be rockin once again
April 23rd, 2009 at 3:10 pm
I hope everyone noticed what I DID NOT post in post #1.
April 23rd, 2009 at 3:12 pm
Thing is people really need to realize that when Calipari says
his system “unleashes players” it really does.
Just about every program in America that runs traditional systems you will
hear every player say “the coach held me back”.
Heck anyone who has played High School basketball, haven’t you said yourself
or heard from other players how the coach just holds them back? I know you
have.
Traditional basketball holds players back naturally being there are more
“set” plays to get the ball to a “set” player.
Traditional basketball has players not only learning how to get the ball
to score on offense but also have to learn how set other people up with
screens, pick and roles, and other crap like that .
There is so much to learn in traditional basketball. Playbook is hard enough.
Then you have to learn how to play a position. Example: big man now has to learn
how to post up properly on top of learning the play book. Players have to develop
certain skills to play their position.
Calipari’s system is easier to learn and unleashes players. It allows
players to make plays not set up plays. It doesn’t hold players back.
The only catch to Calilpari’s style is that you have to have elite players.
Big Men, especially at the 4 that can handle the ball, and players have
to be smart because they will be the ones making the decisions out there.
April 23rd, 2009 at 3:12 pm
hey Save, good to see u on here early lol got any news yet or are you still glued to your puter lol
April 23rd, 2009 at 3:16 pm
I cant see how someone turns their back and says screw you UK, and people are like Good luck best of luck! I say, the hell with ya.
April 23rd, 2009 at 3:18 pm
#54 No news, just opinions. I called my buddy and he is pretty pissed
at me today and won’t talk to me. Probably because I been calling him
everynight for the last six or so night around 2 in th morning, waking
him up, and when he says hello - I respond with “has Wall committed yet”
I don’t think he thinks it is very funny, LOL
April 23rd, 2009 at 3:20 pm
#55 what are you talking about? GJ? GJ wanted to come to UK, Calipari
didn’t think he could fit into his style. What did you want GJ to do?
Come to a place where the new head coach just said that you probably wouldn’t
get to play much at all?
Idiot
April 23rd, 2009 at 3:20 pm
#56 I hear you. don’t you just hate it when our friends don’t share ou same since of humor lol
April 23rd, 2009 at 3:21 pm
*our
April 23rd, 2009 at 3:32 pm
I would like to see GJ end up at Baylor. Like I saw in an earlier comment, him and Dennis would be an pretty good duo for them. Not to mention them both combining with the decent team they had last year.
April 23rd, 2009 at 3:36 pm
I felt good about it. He has been telling me the same thing; it’s always the same conversation, ever since he was at Memphis. The only difference he has at Kentucky is the loss of his two point guards.”
This is what John Wall said, according to Catspause.com
Now the only question I have is, who are the two point guards we lost? Porter is one, is GJ the other? Or does Wall know something we dont? Such as Liggins or Galloway transferring or not being eligable?
April 23rd, 2009 at 3:47 pm
SaveUK, my point in #48 was to note how “expectations” surrounding Galloway with the “trust in BCG” crowd were way overblown. I did not intend to judge his play at all except vs. the expectations that were being thrown around at the time he was rumored to have verballed out of the northern idaho mountains. Expectations for Dodson are already thru the roof with one idiot suggesting Meeks would have to adjust coming off the bench behind him. I hope Dodson is the bomb but have never seen him play. To blindly suggest that since Cal is recruiting him that he is a 5* is simply shortsided. Even Cal has role players on his teams.
April 23rd, 2009 at 3:54 pm
well..lawson to the nba, that doesn’t make me feel any better about wall
April 23rd, 2009 at 3:56 pm
I read somewhere that coach K was giving an award to cadets at West Point and then the book selling stop on Colbert, so he couldnt meet Wall yesterday. Looks like his
priorities are not in recruiting much anymore.
April 23rd, 2009 at 3:58 pm
Dodson averaged 29 pts, 11 boards, & 3 steals his senior year of high school. I think he may be a decent pick up. Seems like I saw somewhere he was a 3-star coming out of high school. I may be wrong. As far as him playing in front of Meeks…not a chance. On another note, we NEED Wall (or Bledsoe). That is a position WE MUST FILL. I’m hoping Liggins or Galloway can step up and fill that spot if we can’t pull in a PG.
