[Moderated by Matt Jones]

In front of a crowd of Big Blue fans intent on supporting the much-criticized Senior class, Kentucky meandered through the first half, then focused early in the second, beating the Bulldogs by 12. It was an odd, disjointed game that at times produced extremely goofy plays and sequences, but it was also entertaining, and a good send off for a Senior class that deserves to have some positive results. The Cats were led by Senior Bobby Perry who poured in 22 points and looked like NCAA Tournament Bobby, hitting open jumpers, calming the team down in key moments and playing like the team leader we all hoped him to be. The Cats also got strong performances from Ramel Bradley and Randolph Morris, both of whom came out with scoring mentalities and defensive intensity.
It was a big win for the Cats, likely ensuring a tournament berth and potentially a strong draw in the SEC Tournament (going in as EAST 4 seems bad, until you realize that the Cats wouldnt see Florida until the final….). Lots of interesting tidbits from the night, such as…..
(1) In a somewhat surprising sight, Shagari Alleyne was at the game, to support the Senior class on their big night. There is a lot to say for the big fella, but the guy has a good heart and I found this to be a really nice gesture.
(2) Jai Lucas was at courtside and the Kentucky students responded accordingly, sending chants of his name towards him at various points. Lucas acknowledged the kids as the fans showed their desire for one of the more important recruits in recent years.
(3) Overall, the Tubby reaction was generally positive. There wre some random boos heard when his name was announced, but it was generally drowned out by the cheers. The students chanted Tubby’s name at a number of points and overall, the discontent that some feared, was not seen.
(4)It was a great send off for the Senior class. Bobby Perry had a season high 22 points and looked comfortable on the court, something we have see far less than we had hoped early in the year. Sheray played a lot of minutes and did a serviceable job. And big Woo made me giddy with his pick and roll dunk and amazing crossover and drive, which got me out of my seat. Good for you Woo.
(5) Maybe getting into the giddiness of senior night, Tubby had some odd substitution patterns tonight. He played the Seniors a great deal and also went to the bank with Michael Porter often, showcasing the kids many hidden strengths. We got a lot of Perry Stevenson (who is green) and a good performance from Meeks…..all in all a lot of positive mojo out there.
More notes to come later, but all in all…..a happy Big Blue Night as this young fan Catherine would certainly agree….

Woo deserves some recognition from Lexington and Kentucky, not just the University of Kentucky. He should be made an official Kentucky Colonol and he should also get the key to the city. Im completely serious. For someone who isnt from KY to love our state that much and be such a good model, he should be recognized.
February 28th, 2007 at 10:30 pm
It’d be nice to hear Lucas’ reaction to tonight’s performance. Good to hear the fans did their part in making him feel welcome.
February 28th, 2007 at 10:30 pm
Lucas should have seen where he fits, if Morris stays and we get these 2 guys, wow!
February 28th, 2007 at 10:34 pm
Please nobody say “Good win tonight, BUT”….seriously I can’t take it. Tonight was the first time in a while that the team (perhaps excluding Joe) looked as if they were actually having fun. Good win, hopefully Perry parlays this into the tournament.
February 28th, 2007 at 10:35 pm
Anybody see my clone out there tonight? My little buddy Jodie runs like me (short choppy steps), gets his shot up quicker than me (just barely), and it seems like every time he lets one fly, it LOOKS like it’s going in. I can’t wait to see him break my records.
February 28th, 2007 at 10:37 pm
I think Joe is good, but I am picking up some negative jealous vibes. I think Joe is upset with Meeks” playing time. Too bad. Good luck Tubby and go big blue.
February 28th, 2007 at 10:38 pm
any chance of lucas committing?
February 28th, 2007 at 10:39 pm
The score was 82-70
February 28th, 2007 at 10:40 pm
He has to think we have a spot for him. I think Tubby played Porter more to show Jai where he would fit.
February 28th, 2007 at 10:41 pm
Joe C. will see his minutes decrease even more next season.
I saw Lucas tonight with his father and mother. The first time I saw him in the lobby i wasn’t quite sure it was him, he could pass for 12 adn will likely be carded until he is 40. I hope he had a good trip, he and his family seemed to be enjoying themselves.
February 28th, 2007 at 10:41 pm
I think that Woo should go recruit Jai Lucas. Unless thats against the rules. I mean, with all the talking about the Basketbowl, being goofy and awkward, plus if he commits he would get to play with a big black member.
February 28th, 2007 at 10:43 pm
Who else saw M. Lucas giddy during the Wildcat Pyramid. He laughed and grabbed Jai’s leg, shaking it. Jai couldn’t help but smile. You could almost see the awe and his dad saying ‘this whole production wants YOU.’ Awesome moment and win and I was proud to be a Cat fan.
February 28th, 2007 at 10:45 pm
When Georgia was on a run at the end and Bradley hit that 3- I saw him motion to the stands: That one was for you, now come on and play here.
I will rewatch it, but could this have been for Jai Lucas or for the seniors?
February 28th, 2007 at 10:46 pm
Good win for the Cats to get rid of those out there that thought we hadnt done enough to get in the tourny. Also got us about .500 in conference (which a lot of people said wouldnt happen at the start of the SEC season). Glad to see Shag there to support his fellow guys and Perry showing up with a good game. Good job for the fans cheering the seniors and Tubby. Even if you think he needs to go, tonight was not the night to show that with an All-American recruit in the building. We needed to put our best foot forward and the fans did that. Thank you.
February 28th, 2007 at 10:47 pm
7) Unless he was just blown away, I think he expects to wait weeks, if not a couple months, before making his decision. It’s not impossible he talks to his pal Patterson, too.
It’s possible Porter and Stevenson played more in this game to show that even the green freshmen will get minutes (though the more numerous minutes of uneven Jasper and rising Jodie should show freshmen minutes, anyhow).
Between Jasper’s fouls and unwillingness to shoot, Porter’s passing mistakes and D losses, and Bradley’s tendency to try to win the game himself without the rest of the team, I think Jai can probably see where he could fit in and be needed, eh?
February 28th, 2007 at 10:49 pm
I am hoping that in the next day or two Lucas commits to us. He knows
it would be his to lose. I think if he commits, Morris more likely stays
because of the talent coming back. That’s my wishful thinking anyways.
Great win by the CATS!!!
February 28th, 2007 at 10:51 pm
16) Isn’t he still planning a trip to Maryland? Odds are he makes that trip first.
I think that Morris’ decision will hinge on if he thinks he can have a much better year next year and increase his draft stock. Maybe more talent coming in will affect it, but it really depends on if he’s going through any discontent right now (such as resentment over riding the bench when he’s not playing enthusiastically). Hopefully he returns and is joined by JL and PP. Monster lineup if so.
February 28th, 2007 at 10:54 pm
Does anyone know what happens if Gergia beats us and UK loses to Flordia then you have a 3 way tie for 3rd..how will seed in the SEC tourney work?
February 28th, 2007 at 10:55 pm
He went to MD last week.
February 28th, 2007 at 10:55 pm
a much better game tonight.
if we get Jai and Patterson, we will be AWESOME next season
February 28th, 2007 at 10:55 pm
17) Lucas made his visit to Maryland on Sunday when they defeated UNC.
February 28th, 2007 at 10:56 pm
Good, not great, win. I’ll take it.
February 28th, 2007 at 10:56 pm
I agree in part. I think Jai will come [hopefully], but I don’t think Morris cares one way or the other. If he comes back it will be because he needs to and if he doesn’t it will be for the money. That’s ok because it is a lot of money. More than we make I am sure. good luck Tubby and go big blue.
February 28th, 2007 at 11:02 pm
Note to everyone. The NBA is not desparate for Randolf. I’ll be stunned
if anyone signs him unless it’s in the developmental league. Come on in
Jai, the point is wide open for you. I’m a bit nervous about Joe C. PPat, the
water is warm, jump on in!!!
February 28th, 2007 at 11:02 pm
Is Joe C in Tubby’s doghouse? he didnt play much.
February 28th, 2007 at 11:02 pm
Ws are good. My chest hurt all day today. We are rediculous.
February 28th, 2007 at 11:02 pm
I’m proud of UK fans tonight. (First time in a LONG time I could say that.) I was important for recruiting purposes to show support for the team and the coach tonight, and it seems that the fans did that. It may be the single most important thing UK fans have done to help their team in several seasons.
February 28th, 2007 at 11:02 pm
Yes ya hit right, WOO has the tendency to pull the ball down when he should keep it up as your pic readily show.
otherwise here is some commments on yours:
“It was an odd, disjointed game that at times produced extremely goofy plays and sequences”
We sure could have used some goofy plays ands sequences in our 9 lost season.
And they sure helped tonite.
“And big Woo made me giddy with his pick and roll dunk and amazing crossover and drive, which got me out of my seat. Good for you Woo. Good for you WOO?” WHAT? Ya think he can’t do it again. Ya comment like it was 1 time thing for him.
Woo was calling the for the ball for along time. The person with the ball ignored him. He was soo open many times. He does the Pick N Roll so well. Okay maybe his hands could improve. But he does the pick and roll.
Another Thought, Why did Morris play so well? Couldn’t have been The Woo making him look bad, could it?
As for that thought, did the Seniors make the Mikey D’s look Bad?
February 28th, 2007 at 11:03 pm
GMO- why are you nervous about joe c and ppat
February 28th, 2007 at 11:04 pm
What’s better than a UK win? A UK win and a Duke loss. Terps up 10 with 37 seconds left.
February 28th, 2007 at 11:04 pm
I’m going to bed w/ a chubby.
February 28th, 2007 at 11:06 pm
Just Joe C. I see an Azabukie type reaction. That dudes head is all messed up. I know
I spelled Kellena’s name wrong.
February 28th, 2007 at 11:08 pm
poor dukies will fall to 8-8 in the ACC after UNC whoops them.
February 28th, 2007 at 11:10 pm
30) Ditto. How many conference losses is that for the Dookies? They still make the big dance, but methinks there may be a bit of disappointment there on Selection Sunday.
On Joe C, I think the issue is that in his attempts to get himself going, he’s playing more 1 on 5 ball, something both he and Ramel have done too much of this season. Meanwhile, with Jodie providing similar numbers and ability on offense to what Joe has all year, and pure energy on D, it’s an obvious choice to play Jodie over Joe. We need Joe to be hot to go up big in games (20+), but he just hasn’t had it for a couple weeks.
Good Lord, A.C. Law is a beast.
February 28th, 2007 at 11:11 pm
haha screw duke and their $15 million practice facility
February 28th, 2007 at 11:13 pm
even if we tie vandy for second with a miracle win against florida, we will be playing on thursday
February 28th, 2007 at 11:15 pm
well duke lost to maryland… which could make jai’s decision a little harder if it was based on tonight
February 28th, 2007 at 11:17 pm
Joe C cant play three minutes here three minutes there. Tubby
likes to do that and it worked quite well for the team tonight.
if that type of pt continues for him, we will see him really
struggle the rest of year. I will not be surprised to see
him try the NBA Developmental route. I dont want him to leave, but
I think that would be in his best interest. Tubby’s offense is not
for him and his head is so messed up he will only get worse.
February 28th, 2007 at 11:23 pm
bukie had 23 tonight…
February 28th, 2007 at 11:23 pm
Joe’s basketball IQ is not outstanding. He does little moving w/out the ball.
February 28th, 2007 at 11:24 pm
#18…Don’t worry about that coach. I’ll be in attendance, just like last year in Athens, and we’ll win.
February 28th, 2007 at 11:24 pm
39. Nice. That dude would have been a beast last year. No 13 losses if he’d stayed.
February 28th, 2007 at 11:25 pm
Joe C might have fit better at MSU, but he can still be a star here. Very few people here would be unhappy with 20 from Joe starting and 10-15 from Jodie off the bench. That can come in this system. Joe just hasn’t been able to be consistent the last few games, so Tubby hasn’t been able to leave him in the game. He already plays Jasper for a lot of minutes without offense, and he can’t expect much from his 4 spot. He needs points at the 2 and 3, and if Joe can’t bring it and Jodie can (with great D), well, Joe needs to get motivated and score off the bench enough to earn his starter spot back.
February 28th, 2007 at 11:25 pm
Just got home from the game, out of 15 games I have seen in person the past 2 seasons, the crowd was the most enthusiastic and energetic I have seen and it was very refreshing. Good effort by the team but still to many turnovers. I think I saw Jai but I am not positive, if it was him he is tiny. I am 6′3″ and he looked tiny as I walked by him…but as long as he can play ball, who cares!!!!
February 28th, 2007 at 11:27 pm
I heard Jai’s like 5′11 or some such. No biggie (as in it’s not a big deal). Your PG doesn’t need to be a tall guy. It helps, but if he can shoot and pass and play D, I don’t care if he’s 4′. In fact, that would be quite hi-larious.
February 28th, 2007 at 11:29 pm
Joe C is going nowhere, and would struggle in anyones offense. He would struggle in the developmental league and never sees an NBA court.
Food for thought: If we land Jai and he is indeed our starting PG next year, who do you want on the court Crawford or Meeks? To me there is no question, Meeks starts next season.
February 28th, 2007 at 11:33 pm
#45 I am 5′11 and Jai is SEVERAL inches shorter than I am. Saw him in the lobby today, within 5 feet of him. But I agree totally, just watch his bro in the league.
February 28th, 2007 at 11:39 pm
I love this site.
February 28th, 2007 at 11:40 pm
Meeks is at the same level as Crawford already. It’ll be interesting to have him coming off the bench as a senior. If it works out with Lucas Jasper should be joining him there oo.
February 28th, 2007 at 11:42 pm
What’s the story with Doug Bruce? 18 years and out the door with not even a newspaper mention? Sounds weird to me.
I hope that’s not the staff changes we’ve been promised.
February 28th, 2007 at 11:56 pm
Wow, please tell me someone else witnessed the A&M/Texas double OT thrilla? Acie Law is pure icewater, Durant is once in a lifetime, it was college ball at its finest…and it won me $125.
March 1st, 2007 at 12:00 am
I got top see both overtimes…Texas is my pick to win it all. I have been saying that for a couple of weeks now and people are telling me I am nuts
March 1st, 2007 at 12:05 am
Texas is definitely capable of beating anyone. They lost some tough games early in the year but their fabulous freshmen have really turned the corner. I like A&M as much as you like Texas, they are my only final 4 shoe-in so far. Their mental toughness is unbelievable.
March 1st, 2007 at 12:12 am
I haven’t really seen much of Texas A&M but what I have seen of them has really impressed me
March 1st, 2007 at 12:20 am
who gives a damn about the size of Jai Lucas. He can play poinyguard and thats a position we so desperately need
March 1st, 2007 at 12:23 am
Joe C. is not leaving, there is not need for him to. He knows he wont get the money, or even get drafted. And honestly he doesn’t need money. I dont know how people can compare his situation with buike at all. Buike’s family owed $400,000 to the courts in like a 3 month time period after he was indicted. Crawfords fam like most in the US has insurance, and other people to help them out, and things called loans that they dont have to pay off for years to come. Plus i gurantee its not $400,000 worth. Joe and his family know that it would be the wrong thing for him to do as a person and his future. He might not ever play NBA or anything, he will stay and get his degree. And for whomever said sum bout Morris and his “draft stock” remember he cant get drafted he is technically a Free-Agent, he could leave at any time. So we dont have to worry about it really unless some team comes across this off-season and gives him a huge deal and even then he can turn it down, so really its workin out best for him in that situation. I was just happy that tonight we got to see the TRUE KENTUCKY team that I knew we had all year. Playing with heart and passion, diving all over the place for loose balls, you could def. see who wanted it more tonight. And big ups to the UK fans for being what we are known for, “Classy!” GO BIG BLUE!!
March 1st, 2007 at 12:31 am
Joe C might leave because he gets more minutes in NBA developmental
leaque then he gets at UK. I agree he doesnt play in the NBA, but
he will get worse at UK next year. Meeks has All-American written
all over him. If he stays four years, you are looking at a 10 Ten
scorer in UK History. He will get 300-400 points 06, 400-500-07, 500-600 -08, and 500-600
in 09. Minimum 1700 points, Max he breaks 2000 points.
March 1st, 2007 at 1:26 am
56) Yeah, I said Draft stock. My bad. Habit with college players. But my point remains that if he thinks another year will get him a much better paycheck/improve his game, he’ll come back. If not, he’ll probably take what he’s offered, and he will get an offer. His upside is just too good for one of the teams not to offer this Summer. It’s like a free draft pick.
57) Meeks will hopefully be a beast the rest of this year and throughout his UK career, especially if he starts next year. By the way, he has 237 points this year (Avg of 8.2; possibly before tonight). That’s 4th on the team, behind the Juniors, but ahead of Perry and Jasper. Jodie is also the 2nd highest % 3-pt shooter behind Bradley, and is shooting 86.8% from the line, currently 1st on the team. Hopefully Bradley will regain his form there, but I wouldn’t be surprised if we continue to see Meeks handling the ball a lot near the end of close games.

March 1st, 2007 at 2:13 am
What about this for a line-up next year, assuming everything works out to plan:
1-Meeks
2-Bradley
3-Crawford
4-PPat
5-Morris/Carter
I think Jasper is going to be a good, solid player throughout his career at UK. But honestly, I haven’t seen enough to say he is a shoo-in for holding onto that starting spot. Meeks has to be on the court…too good to pull off the bench. And neither Bradley nor Crawford will tolerate coming off the bench. Bradley because he has too much pride, Crawford because he is too much of a mental case. And I also think Morris will be here next year. He hasn’t done enough against good teams consistently to merit a spot on an NBA roster. 1 game against UNC won’t cut it.
March 1st, 2007 at 3:19 am
Meeks isnt a point guard
March 1st, 2007 at 6:33 am
And what position does Crawford play in the NBA?
Please, he is a tweener if you ever saw one. He is not an NBA player!
He, never mind, screw it, this stupid about JC.
52) You aren’t crazy, I think Texas can make a real run, maybe not win it, but Durant is a monster who no one can guard and carry them a long way.
Damn, Texas is so young with so many excellent young talented players. Hmm, I used to feel that way about our squad some years ago.
Porter and Stevenson should have played more all year. Could they have done worse than the others Han?
March 1st, 2007 at 8:28 am
Texas is good, but they play a lot of really, really close games. I could see them going far, but I could also see a mid major knocking them out. A&M is pretty dang good. It was close and I was falling asleep, but it looked like Law should have gotten 3 free throws at the end of that game. Could be wrong, though.
March 1st, 2007 at 9:03 am
62, There is a place in the NBA for tweeners to make a very comfortable living. Maybe not as stars, but still with incomes that would make most Engineers and Lawyers jealous. League minimum is what these days? 400K? If Bogans can find a home in the league, so can Crawford, if he uses his senior year to mature in the same way that Bogans did. If you’re a tweener, you have to do the little things that the NBA superstars won’t. Tough defense, making the pass, making other players better. That’s the niche you have to fill. Joe has the talent for that, but not the mentality. If he wants to cash in, he has a year to change that.
March 1st, 2007 at 9:06 am
#37 I hope Jai tivo’d the Maryland game cause Vasquez their pg had 12 pts, 12 assist and 9 rebounds. He starts day one with us mark it down. I see Jasper and Crwford leaving. Morris stays!
March 1st, 2007 at 9:17 am
The sequel teaser is now online.
March 1st, 2007 at 9:23 am
#65..I agree with your assessment of Maryland and the point guard spot. They are set there…the position is set for a long time.
I think Jai comes here, and would be interested in hearing what he thought of his visit last night. I also think Crawford stays (really nowhere else to go logically, though he doesn’t often do logic).
March 1st, 2007 at 9:24 am
Woo hoo! We beat a Georgia team at home without 2 of their best 3 players. All is well again!!! Third time this year we have played a team at home without important players. We still haven’t beaten a ranked team in a long time. The gimmes are over. We’ll see what happens to this unde achieving bunch now. TIME FOR A CHANGE!
March 1st, 2007 at 9:27 am
Projected Stats for next year…if the best hapoens
1-Jai 8 pts. 4 assists per game
2-Ramel 13 pts. 3 reb 3 assists
3-Joe 14 pts. 4 reb
4-P-Pat 10 pts. 8 reb
5-Randolph 16 pts. 7
Bench
Jodie 12 a game
Jasper 7 a game
80 pts a game right there! Man I hope things works out
March 1st, 2007 at 9:30 am
Woo embodies everything that UK basketball stands for. I second the calls for him to be made a Kentucky Colonel.
March 1st, 2007 at 9:48 am
Everyone’s desire for Jai Lucas is very homoerotic…
March 1st, 2007 at 9:55 am
maybe tubby played a lot of porter not to showcase his talents or that he is a freshman, but because at this point in the year we still give up about 19 turnovers per game. All we need is a pg that won’t turn the ball over and the close games would have been wins. we have seen this same thing since the ucla game. tubby knows the only way to make a tourney run is to not turn over the ball so much and the group we have seen all year at the point just won’t get it done. thus, he played porter to see if he could luck out. but being only a freshman he turned the ball over a lot too (5 times)
March 1st, 2007 at 9:58 am
i hear ya 72. i was thinkin’ before the game that it was time to give porter a try. just give us one guy who can get it up the court and we’ll make a run
March 1st, 2007 at 10:16 am
Some of you people kill me! Not much Tubby bashing today so some of you start on Joe C. and whether he will remain a CAT, whether he is good enough to play in the league, that he might try the Dev. NBA league, that his family needs money—none of which has been reported and is being made up on this site.
It is totally ridiculous, the guy has went through a tough time w/his family losing their home and everything in it. That is concern for anyone, especially a young college student.
Why would Jasper leave? That again makes no sense and there is no reason to, Jasper can play multiple positions.
March 1st, 2007 at 10:36 am
The students weren’t the only ones chanting Tubby’s name. I sit upstairs, and while those around me are passionate, they also are really negative. However, when Tubby was chewing on the ref after Porter got the 5 second call and then the reach-in foul, MANY of my upstairs brethren were heard chanting “Tub-by, Tub-by, Tub-by.” I couldn’t believe it. Maybe there are more supporters out here than the bashers realize.
The fan chants to Lucas were pretty good. The loudest even got a wave from Jai, and I could see from my seat that he was smiling ear to ear at the fan reception. Good work by the students - and even some of us oldies - and I hope it pays off.
I am happy for the seniors. They got a good send-off, which they earned, and maybe last night will serve as a little confidence boost going into the post season. The team really needs Perry to play like he did last night….
March 1st, 2007 at 10:45 am
how bout that tubby could play woo alot because he was doing well and he was trying to save rm and jc for saturday as much as possible. plus jc is still recovering from his finger injury. jm is good but a jc he is not…yet. Who was that with WOO last night? i missed the intro.
March 1st, 2007 at 11:04 am
#73 What more can be said about Tubby than has already been said? Bottom line is
I don’t believe he will be back next season.
March 1st, 2007 at 11:40 am
61) Based on how he plays in most of his minutes, Porter would have been worse than the other point guards. The offense DOES NOT SCORE when Porter runs it right now. Stevenson gets bullied inside, and there may be other issues.
67) Believe it or not, many of us always enjoy any win.
76) I still maintain that Tubby returns at least for next year to finish out with the Junior class. That is, if he even leaves after then.
March 1st, 2007 at 11:41 am
#75…What exactly is a jc? Personally, I hope Jodie Meeks never becomes a jc. I expect him to be better without much effort.
March 1st, 2007 at 11:42 am
Hey, blog guys: is there gonna be a post about the Hoops team later today before their game?
For anyone who didn’t know, Fox Sports South should be covering the Women’s SEC tournament most of today. UK plays around 3/3:30.
I’m not huge on the Hoops team, but it never hurts to have basketball on in the background.
March 1st, 2007 at 11:43 am
Why does everyone feel like Michael Porter needs to play PG if he’s in the game. His position is SG and he’s probably the best spot-up shooter on the team. Just another reason why I don’t understand his lack of minutes on this team. Good coaching I suppose.
March 1st, 2007 at 11:47 am
Tubby Smith isn’t going anywhere at all, unless HE CHOOSES to do so!
March 1st, 2007 at 11:49 am
75) When Joe is hot, he’s a potential 30 point/game guy. But that has been very rare.
In 924 minutes, Joe C has scored 405 points, pulled down 124 boards, 74 assists/57 TO, 9 blocks, 22 steals.
In 597 minutes, Jodie has 237 points, 71 boards, 38 assists to 36 TO, 2 blocks, and 21 steals.
And plenty of Jodie’s minutes early in the season came in the company of Porter, Thomas and Woo.
Those are certainly comparable numbers right now.
March 1st, 2007 at 11:49 am
All I can say is great night by Perry. It’s nice to see him have good one on senior night. Also, good to see Woo play pretty well. He deserved some minutes, just based on hustle and passion for the program. And I just love it when the Polish Prince dunks one home.
Solid win. Now we have to make it mean something by beating Florida this weekend.
March 1st, 2007 at 11:59 am
Han, I love Joe too but can you tell me any game other than the first Georgia game where he has come close to eclipsing the 30 point line? He is good for 20 if used appropriately.
March 1st, 2007 at 12:08 pm
The chat for Lucas was AWESOME! I sat in 231 in the upper deck behind him, the whole student section turned towards him, everyone in front of him got up and turned around. All eyes on him. Pointing, cheering, showing him love. I’m sure he felt the whole stadium was after him. Very cool expirience.
March 1st, 2007 at 12:21 pm
Porter fed Morris in the low post effectively several times last night, which others have been struggling to do. Yes, he had several turnovers, but some of those last night against the press were due to none of his other teammates responding to the press and coming back to help out–they just stood there as if statues in the frontcourt. If you were watching on TV, that may not have been evident. His error was in picking up his dribble in the corners or on the sideline. With no one coming to help, the press ate him up.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Travis_Ford
I’m not a tubby basher and I completely support him and the team. But if he leaves I think this
man is the future of UK. How could there be a better choice. He’s from Ky, played at UK
and the resume looks impressive so far.
his team is 22-7 so far this year.
March 1st, 2007 at 12:37 pm
Ford is evidently a very difficult personality. Why not Pelphrey? Who is a little older than Ford, has better coaching credentials (albeit a little less head coaching experience), and even better Kentucky credentials (retired jersey, Mr. Basketball?)
That’s my choice, anyway. It is something of a jolt but Pelphrey is now in his mid-30’s and actualy graduated two years ahead of Ford. I have never heard anyone say he is a problem to know.
March 1st, 2007 at 12:37 pm
The University of Kentucky’s basketball program would swallow Travis Ford alive at this point in his career.
March 1st, 2007 at 12:41 pm
Loving the positive post today. Nothing like a W.
Nice job to the seniors, good for then and I hope they finish their careers out strong.
Glad the fans behaved professionally. Should be hard for Jai to say no.
March 1st, 2007 at 12:43 pm
I agree, Pelphrey does have more big name school coaching experience. And he was a player under Patino and an assistant under Donavan.
March 1st, 2007 at 12:44 pm
Obviously Donavan is the first choice. But do you really believe he would leave florida? Ford or Pelphrey would make a fine second choice.
March 1st, 2007 at 12:46 pm
#88. You may be right, but do you think the fans would turn on him the way some have turned on
tubby?
March 1st, 2007 at 12:50 pm
Besides, if Tubby stays and both Lucas and Patterson both commit it won’t matter anyway. This
will all turn around next year. Remember Tubby had three straight 10 loss seasons from 99 to 02.
then ran off three years with wins of 32, 27, and 28.
March 1st, 2007 at 12:55 pm
84) Like I said, it’s rare. He had 2 games with 17 in the first half, without being a “ball hog” so to speak. While he was “hot” from the arc, he didn’t seem to play above himself. In one of those games, he disappeared the entire second half, and ended up riding the bench most of the end of the game.
In the Georgia game, he disappeared much of the 2nd half, but resurfaced near the end and in OT to get the 29. He’s much more comfortably a 15-20 point scorer (like Azubuike), but each has shown that if they could take that special step and become a STAR, they could drop 30 without hindering the rest of the team much if any. It wouldn’t be an every night thing, of course, but I could see a guy with his talent going 24-30 every couple games.
86) I didn’t see those feeds that you did. I saw Stevenson make such a pass once or twice. But it’s not a coincidence if everyone stops moving the moment Porter comes in at the point. He’s probably more suited to the 2.
92) I’d take Rick back before I’d take The Kid.
93) There has not been a coach to walk the Earth that UK fans wouldn’t turn on for back-to-back losses.
March 1st, 2007 at 1:11 pm
new name for tubby how about 20 win tubby!!!
go cat’s
March 1st, 2007 at 1:56 pm
#92 Choises for new coach in this order Donovan, Calipari, Barnes. This is all that is needed because calipari WILL take it if offered.
March 1st, 2007 at 2:25 pm
Top 3 choices
Pat Riley
Rick Pitino
Billy Donnovan
March 1st, 2007 at 2:27 pm
Soon you can call Coach K 10K since he is fixing to have 10 losses!
March 1st, 2007 at 2:31 pm
I like Calipari, D’Antoni, or Donovan if the chance arises, but I’m not sold on Tubby not being able to turn this thing back around. Give him the rest of this season, give him a shot at PP and JL, he’s looking great for 08, see what he does next year. I think this year was the year it finally became a debate. He will have 2-3 more years to prove it.
March 1st, 2007 at 2:35 pm
Check that…
Pat Riley
Rick Pitino
Mike D’Antoni
March 1st, 2007 at 2:41 pm
Coach K is about to have his second ten loss season at Duke since the ‘84-’85 season. Tubby on the other hand is about to have his fifth ten loss season in ten seasons at UK.
March 1st, 2007 at 2:46 pm
100) I’m more with you that a lot of people here.
I think this year is big for him, and next year may be the ultimate test year. If we get PP, JL, and Morris stays, next year has to be a good year - no excuses. If we don’t have a good year next year (with or without PP and JL), Tubby may leave/be bought out.
I’m fairly certain he’ll be back next year, unless we lose out and he refuses to change his staff (which would be demanded before Tubby is asked to leave).
If Tubby leaves, I seriously would enjoy stealing Rick back, idiot “traitor” that he has become.
After him, I doubt Pat Riley would really come (getting to old for this S#@!), but I’m not sure if I’d rather have a good coach from another school like Calipari or Few, a UK player-turned-coach like Pelphrey/Ford, or the loud-mouthed-fans’ favorite, The Kid.
March 1st, 2007 at 2:56 pm
I say if he dont get pat and jai kick him to the curb, if he gets them, then lets see what he can do with them….
March 1st, 2007 at 2:58 pm
Give me Gillespie from Texas A&M if we happen to be in the market for a new coach.
March 1st, 2007 at 3:06 pm
UK can’t fire Tubby for one reason and everyone knows that. Seriously, with the actions and words of the fan base just this year, who in the hell would want to go to Lexington and coach? Some of the most moronic fans, but also some of the most passionate. The only problem is that the moronic fans are the ones who give the rest of UK the bad rep.
March 1st, 2007 at 3:11 pm
#106 Check out cnnsi.com to see why it is time for Tubby to leave. Seth Davis is pretty straight forward. He is jsut saying what a lot of your so-called “loud mouth fans” have benn saying for a while. TIME FOR A CHANGE!
March 1st, 2007 at 3:13 pm
“The University of Kentucky’s basketball program would swallow Travis Ford alive at this point in his career.”
That makes zero sense. Are you saying Georgia and Tulsa prepared Tubby? Of course not, the program is too big for him, expectations(actually being ranked) too much for him. travis may or may not be able to handle it, but it’s not as simple as a coaching resume. You have to love and thrive in the spotlight to be effective at a program like UK, UNC, UCLA etc.
March 1st, 2007 at 3:14 pm
“Porter fed Morris in the low post effectively several times last night, which others have been struggling to do.”
Except Jasper who had 5 assists in 14 minutes.
March 1st, 2007 at 3:14 pm
Calipari? Are you kidding me? That’s what we need, someone a bit shady…that’s what you want? That proves winning trumps integrity anytime. Surely there is someone out there who has both?
March 1st, 2007 at 3:22 pm
Guess if Seth Davis says it, then it must be Gospel. Just saying from an outside observer who ranks UK as my favorite SEC team other than Florida, the fans and constant barrage from the media regarding Tubby would not make me want the job if I was at a high level program such as MSU (Izzo), Florida, Phoenix Suns, etc…
March 1st, 2007 at 3:24 pm
109, I think someone mentioned it before. It was Stevenson that fed Morris the most effectively. Jasper made a couple mistakes, but played a great first 10 minutes. Porter had 5 turnovers and 4 assists in 14minutes. Jasper had 5 assists and 1 turnover. I like Porter, but I haven’t seen the “spot up” shooting that you guys say he possesses, and he is a Sheray-like danger when he has the ball in the half court.
March 1st, 2007 at 3:27 pm
I also think that limiting Ramel’s minutes was a good thing, because he produced what I think was his most complete game this year. 18pts, 6 rebounds, 5 assists, and only 2 missed shots (the bank was open though).
March 1st, 2007 at 3:28 pm
You all are out of your mind thinking that Pat Riley or Mike D’Antoni are going to come coach at UK. What are you all smoking? UK is a great college basketball tradition but these two are two of the best coaches in “THE LEAGUE” and Pat is like 100 years old.
March 1st, 2007 at 3:31 pm
Also,
I would shoot myself if Mike D’Antoni was UK’s coach. Beautiful offense but it only works because of NASH. I havent yet seen another point that can run Phoenix’s offense at Phoenix’s level and D’Antoni knows nothing about D. D wins championships. The Suns will not win an NBA championship this year because they dont play D. Its going to be the Mavs, Spurs, or hopefully the Pistons (longhsot that it is).
March 1st, 2007 at 3:34 pm
#111, No Seth Davis is not gospel. i just find it interesting that th national media is beginning to echo what your so-called
“crazy fans” have benn saying for some time. Tubby isn’t Kentucky caliber. It’s time to move on.
And by the way, I also think it is crazy to think we will get Riley or D’Antoni. Calipari is the correct move if we can’t get
Donovan.
March 1st, 2007 at 3:35 pm
#98, #101
Please tell me you are joking.
If UK fans aren’t careful, we’ll end up like Alabama football…the job Alabamans think is the best in the world and who suffocate everyone who takes the job if they don’t go 11-1.
March 1st, 2007 at 3:38 pm
Defense wins championships is the silliest phrase of all time. It’s the most over-used cliche, and it’s completely wrong. Good offense and good defense wins championships. That’s why you haven’t seen Wisconsin, Pitt, BC or Kentucky win a title recently. Everyone talks about this great defense they play, but they don’t have efficient, consistent offense. You’ve got to be efficient on both ends of the court.
And if you think that a quality coach wouldn’t come to UK you’re crazy. Plain and simple.
March 1st, 2007 at 3:40 pm
“If UK fans aren’t careful, we’ll end up like Alabama football…the job Alabamans think is the best in the world and who suffocate everyone who takes the job if they don’t go 11-1.
How many times have the T crowd used this fear tactic. We’re so far from Bama it’s not even funny. We’ve had 5 coaching in the last 70 or so years. Our current coach has been here 10 years. We aint even close to Bama when comes to coaching jobs.
March 1st, 2007 at 3:40 pm
How about Stevenson at the top of the key running the high-low??? He hit Morris with GREAT passes 2 or 3 times for easy buckets. Keep that one at the top of the playbook Tubby!
March 1st, 2007 at 3:45 pm
116) did u actually read the entire article?? Davis mentions some both positive and negatives about Tubby’s tenure at UK. Davis even goes on to say that he has every reason to believe Tubby will return next season. So i guess thats where he differs from the “loud mouth” fans who already think Tubby is done.
March 1st, 2007 at 3:47 pm
Regardless of what happens, even if UK wins the SEC tourney and goes Sweet 16 or further, people will still want Tubby gone and I truly believe it is b/c of his skin color. And D’Antoni and Riley would not leave the NBA to come to UK, people need to lay off the moonshine.
March 1st, 2007 at 3:49 pm
#117…I’m completely serious.
March 1st, 2007 at 3:50 pm
108) Keep in mind, Tubby was a former UK assistant, and most fans remembered that, as well. He had experience as a member of the UK staff. While Ford played here and coached in the State, he has not coached for UK, and that is very, very different.
As for Riley and other NBA coaches, you might attract someone who’s had a few bad years and was a college level before that (like Louisville getting Rick), but a coach of a contender like Miami or the Suns will not leave to coach even the most stories college school. Riley has never confirmed that his contract has an out for UK. I wouldn’t mind him, but I don’t see it at his age and where he is now.
How about this: A currently unemployed coach who has shown ability at the college level, and will be more than happy to move on after a year or 2 if the fans don’t like him: Larry Brown. LOL
March 1st, 2007 at 4:08 pm
Porter played against GU because he can play very good D. If you watch him he plays the best D of any of the gaurds. He is physical and he has four more years to improve.
Jasper will not leave but move to the three spot and RS next seasson to develop a jumper. I see Porter being our starting point even if Jai Lucas comes. My thinking is Lucas leaves early and doesn’t plan on staying four years. Though it may not be next seasson I see him starting before he is a junior given he Rs also. He plays to physical not to play in games. He was in everyones face and didn’t back down from anyone. And he showed that he can score with the reverse layup and Boys he is one fast White Boy. Two bounces of the ball and he was on the other side of the basket.
However I do believe that Joe C. is gone next year and will open up the scholarship for S Pettegrew. Joe just doesn’t fit the team concept. When you read the articles in the paper and on the net you never here Joe talk about the team he talks about himself. He doesn’t dish the ball when he gets into trouble. He had Woo and Meeks open both times he drove the ball last night. Woo was standing right behind him and he wouldn’t dish the ball. What really gets is that Woo bust his ars to screen for everyone and doesn’t complain about anything but when Crawford drives the ball he can’t pass it to a wide open Woo for an easy two points. Lets face it folks Woo can hit the 15 footer almost every time he shoots it. joe just isn’t a team player. He goes but hwere I don’t know.
March 1st, 2007 at 4:09 pm
I’m not sold on Ford yet, but I don’t think anyone can say he can’t handle it here. Nothing prepares you for this job, you either have it in you or you don’t.
Riley aint coming. That much I know.
March 1st, 2007 at 4:16 pm
I see Riley as a kind of “completion of the circle”. Coming back to his college roots. I would envision him getting some top notch assistants and coaching five years or so. Then, the reigns could be passed on to the most ready assistant without missing a beat.
It’s just a dream at best, but what a reality that would be.
March 1st, 2007 at 4:21 pm
127) If you want to complete a circle, I say again, steal Rick back.
–It would be the biggest story in sports coaching in a very long time.
–It would likely crush the Louisville basketball program
–It would give Rick a chance to “redeem” himself
–He’d be the only available coach who had proven he could win championships at UK, which would be enough to satisfy even the most obnoxious UK fans for a couple years.
–You can’t argue against his skill/eye for picking assistants
–If nothing else, we would never again see a second half where our 3-point streak was on the line.
March 1st, 2007 at 4:23 pm
#128…I more than OK with completing that circle as well. I’d love to have Pitino back at the helm.
March 1st, 2007 at 4:26 pm
#121 Yea, the positives are that he is well likd by other coaches. Boy that will get us a bunch of wins. Davis can’t come out
now and say Tubby is done. But after the next 3 games he is DONE!
And Dr. Bob, you’re an idiot. I don’t care if our coach is pink, blue, purple or black as long as he keeps us in the top echelon
of college basketball, which except for a year and a half stretch we have not been in the last 8 years. that is indisputable.
March 1st, 2007 at 4:31 pm
Just say no to Pitino.
The guy just isn’t the same coach. UofL can keep him.
March 1st, 2007 at 6:34 pm
I think Tubby played Porter a lot last nite, for Lucas and his dads benefit. Porter made several turnovers which in a normal game would have brought him to the bench. I think Tubby wanted to show Lucas and his dad that Jai could play a lot of point next year. I also think Tubby believes if both Lucas and Patterson don’t come to UK, his job is on very thin ice.
March 2nd, 2007 at 10:57 am
132) It’s entirely possible about Porter, though for the sake of feeling a bit less mean, we should also view it as Tubby giving Porter a chance to gain more minutes this year.
