Today was Johnny Cash’s Birthday. While as of yet I am not advocating a national holiday in honor of this occasion, I do think it is worthy of some praise. I mean this is the Man in Black and likely one of the best, most versatile musicians that we have ever seen. Johnny Cash touched those who were young, old and everywhich way in between. He spanned generations and cultures, likely one of the few men to speak as easily with Billy Graham as a Folsom Prisoner. Cash is likely one of my Top 3 Musical favorites and a guy whose life I find fascinating. So take a moment today and give a tip of the hat to the legend.
(1) “Ring of Fire” —- There are certainly some blazes a’roarin around Coach Tubby Smith and the Kentucky program. Today the message boards lit up with news that a random radio host in Nashville said that he had heard that Tubby Smith might be bought out by the University of Kentucky and some local businessmen. Folks who look forward to such an event got excited, ran with the news and then all of a sudden, press conferences were all but scheduled throughout the land. Many asked why we didnt report the story (Answer: I have a regular job which I have to do) and if we were going to ignore this “important story.” Well I wont ignore it, but forgive me if I dont quiver with excitement. Look anyone with a pulse knows that some version of this story has been bouncing around Lexington for two years. “Boosters buying out Tubby” could almost be a full-fledged website at this point for the amount of conversation it has drawn. The only difference here is that a radio guy said it. But that means NOTHING. As a member of the radio community, I can tell you that it takes no inside information to be on the airwaves. This host said that he “heard that they might be buying Tubby out.” Well that isnt news folks, thats jabber. I am fully confident that there are boosters who would like to buy Tubby out. Maybe, if given concrete proof, I could believe they have tried and approach the man. But I do not believe that UK and boosters are organizing to oust Tubby as of today. That is simply frivolous talk at this point…..see me again in a few weeks.
(2) “I Dont Like it But I Guess Things Happen that Way.” —- Then we had the big press release by Mitch Barnhardt where he essentially told everyone to hold their horses and wait until the end of the season to evaluate the staff. To me, this is the big news of the day. An AD committed to a coach would have come out and said, “look Tubby is my coach and that is the way it will be. That is not what Mitch said. Essentially he said, “everyone shut up for now and lets convene again in a few weeks.” Now lets cut through the muck. Here is what is going to happen the day the season ends. Tubby will not be fired…..but Mitch will approach Tubby and say that staff changes must happen….period. Then those changes will happen or other changes will be made. In a few weeks, we may look at today as being significant….but if we do, it wont be because of “buyout” news….it will be because of Mitch showing the first signs of wavering support of Tubby.
(3) “It Aint Me Babe” — In other news that infuriated some (including an almost salivating with anger Matt May of the Cats Pause), Tubby Smith did not take calls on his call-in show. Instead, he brought on former UK players for interviews during the two hours. Well I say Tubby, but I am sure that he doesnt produce the show, so it was likely others who made the final call. I know some think this is outrageous, but I dont know why anyone cares. Tubby and company would get nothing out of having random people call and yell at him….that is what message boards are for! From a PR perspective, I think it was a mistake…..but is it important? In my view, no.
(4) “One Piece at a Time” — The big news on this site tonight was the story that Jai Lucas will be visiting for the Georgia game on Wednesday night.. Lucas told me that he was interested in seeing UK Senior Night and visiting Rupp for a game. So much for the theories that he had made up his mind for another school (and the stories from a Maryland site that he would be taking no more visits). Senior night is very important for UK….and the fans should remember that if they are interested in “expressing themselves” on Wednesday. Jai is an important recruit and holds a key to the future for UK….now is not the time to cut off the program’s nose to spite its face.
(5) “Boy Named Sue” — I spent tonight on the radio with Eric Crawford at the Courier Journal debating his “fans cause recruiting harm” column from last week. It was a somewhat tumultuous affair, but Eric was nice enough to do it and I appreciate it. Maybe next time we will get Rick Bozich involved who has this article today in the paper where he suggests that it might be best for Tubby to resign. In it, he says that Lucas and Patterson dont like UK enough to commit (even though it is their concern about Bozich’s hope that is causing the wait for at least one), then it shows how bad UK is off. I dont have a problem with Bozich’s column….he has a right to his own opinion…..I just hope he holds with it come what may. If you are going to take a stand, take it.
Finally, check back in Tuesday Night for a big announcement about the future of this show and website. And look for Hour Two of the Saturday show (with Jai Lucas) online around noon…..that is all.

How was the Man in Black versatile?

You are correct on Johnny Cash. He is one of small group of great American singers/songwriters and is one of the most influential figures in both country and pop music.
So far as the other stuff, I was listening to a station in Nashville (104.5), who spent an entire hour or two on the UK-Tubby saga. You would think that they MIGHT discuss VANDY basketball for a change. Hell, even when we lose we are better news than they are in their own town. It was interesting to listen to, though..especially the throngs of UK fans calling in from Mississippi to Cincinnati…All of them salivating at the idea of a new coach. One asked for Rick Stansbury, and the newspaper guy jumped in and said “at least Tubby doesn’t cheat” I will leave it everyone to infer what they will about his feelings about the Mississippi State program …….
February 27th, 2007 at 12:19 am
Hopefully something will be taken care of one way or another. I think the program needs some energy and coaching enthusiasm brought into the program. The excitement is gone. If there is a change wonder what effect that would have on the existing players and recruits or potential recruits.
February 27th, 2007 at 12:26 am
If Tubby lands Jai and PP and UK finishes in the Final 32 or 16,I don’t think Mitch will fire Tubby at the end of this season. However, he will demand changes in his assistants. Tubby should have replaced 2 or 3 of them last year. I am as disappointed as the rest of the UK fan base, but this team has lost a lot of close games to some very good teams. With a little luck and better execution, this team could be a surprise in the tourney.
February 27th, 2007 at 12:26 am
Tubby is not leaving, just accept it.
February 27th, 2007 at 12:34 am
I just want to see us get back to where we was. THey say that college basketball has changed but how come the other top programs are getting top players. Duke,North Carolina, Kansas,to name a few. We should be able to get our fair share.
February 27th, 2007 at 12:36 am
Like i said before Tubby wont leave if he fire he take probly every player with him Jai or Patterson would probly follow tubby any where he goes. If he leaves today u would see a crap load of NCCA team that would give him a coachin chance Like i said heck if we win the next two go in to the Sec Tournment Win that and then go to the final 8 or win it all they wouldnt remember what we did in the reg season
February 27th, 2007 at 12:43 am
Matt, I don’t care much for your politics at times, but by gosh, we sure see eye to eye on Johnny Cash! Any man who respects Cash is ok by me!
February 27th, 2007 at 12:50 am
“Rupp Prison Blues”
When I was just a baby my momma told me son/Always be a good boy - don’t ever drain the tub
But I shot alot of jumpers just to help my eye/Now when I hear that whistle blowin’ I hang my head and cry
I’ll bet there’s rich folks eatin’ in a fancy dinin’ car/Their prob’ly
drinkin’ bourbon and smokin’ big cigars
Well, I know I had it comin’/I know I can’t be free
But those players keep a dribblin’/And that’s what tortures me
February 27th, 2007 at 12:54 am
Here is a tip of the hat.
February 27th, 2007 at 12:55 am
oh so predictable.
a bad rumor about tubby = untrue. always. forever.
and if you even think about believing it, youre an idiot.
in tubby you trust, huh matt?
look where that got you.
February 27th, 2007 at 12:58 am
Tubby shouldn’t leave Patterson and Lucas said they want to play together, this is what I’ve heard from my source, I think in my book they are two of the top 50 players in America, Tubby is on these two very hard, so I think they really like Kentucky
February 27th, 2007 at 12:59 am
I agree with 6, as I have said in some other blogs. Tubby is staying put. There will be new assistants next year for sure. I think Hobbs and Rigot will be gone by april, maybe even Hanson. We signed Sean Finney last year soon as he got released from his school and Tubby “made a spot” for him at UK, do you think this was for kind gesture or for what he thought might be to come? Tubby made some changes last year by firing his strength and conditioning coach and hiring holsopple then added Finney as well, but you dont want to put an entire new staff in, i none year. I can see him firing Hobbs and Rigot, maybe hiring Kyle Macy then making Hanson and Finney his assistants, along with holsopple being the strength and conditioning man. This would add better insight from Macy as to the Ky tradition along with Hanson, and Finney is a staright out A+ when it comes to recruting. You have to realize that from April-October 15th, Tubby cant do a thing with his players, but can have his assistants doing little work outs with groups of 4 at a time. It is time for something new, but I dont think its from firing Tubby, its from getting new background guys. We have seen what tubby can do himself as a coach, the numbers are there, its the asst. that are lacking behind. I mean honestly what have you seen Rigot do during a game? He might as well be getting pop corn for the Recruits coming to watch.
February 27th, 2007 at 1:04 am
and no Patterson and Jai will not follow tubby, PP will then end up going to UF and Jai will go to Ok st. or Maryland, I think Maryland. I think once news comes out about tubby staying for sure then PP and Jai will sign. BUt if its a “we’ll give Tubby another year adn then see,” well I dont see either of these guys signing because they wont want to be apart of not knowing whos gonna be coaching them past their frosh year. Thats why Long term deals are good in college, and I am not sayin we should extend Tubby’s contract but should say we’ll let it play out if he makes some changes to his staff and run its course.
February 27th, 2007 at 1:21 am
I disagree with you on the call in show.
If you listened to it, you would have seen similarities to the President’s town hall meetings with the big sign on the back wall that says, “Compassion at Work”… or something like that.
Tonight’s show blatantly sold the UK fan base short of explanations for the real issues. Tubby should have answered the questions of callers (intelligent if possible) on his call-in-show. Whoever made the call for content on the show made an untimely decision. IMO
This is a critical time for our program. Tubby is our man, and he should answer to millions that entrust their pride and joy to.
Indecision will decide the fate of Smith and UK.
I believe if we turn it around here at the end, make a GOOD run, get our prized recruits and return everyone… Tubby could still pull it out to the end of his contract with redeeming success.
If not, he has to go. There can be no in-between, it has to happen this year or four years from now.
So, Go Cats… no gray area please.
February 27th, 2007 at 1:27 am
I will have to agree with you on that one Banjo! I think things do need a turn around. I am not happy with whats going on at all, but I feel as if Tubby is our man and its not like he’s lost anything in his coaching ablilities, he knows how to win. We just a need a little change and things will correct themselves. My Biggest thing is on senior day we as Ky fans need to show our support for this program and for out Seniors and thank them for the many hours they have given to try and make this program successful. Plus a great showing and great entusiasm showing the team we’re behind them 100% can work miracles for them coming down against UF and then to the SEC tourny and NCAA tourny. Also it will look good for Jai so he knows not all is bad as things seem and that UK fans are the best because they can still rally behind their team, even in this hard time with this many rumors going around.
February 27th, 2007 at 1:42 am
Let Tubby Stay-
Get Rid of Hobbs and Rigot
February 27th, 2007 at 3:16 am
LOL…I love you crow…you are one of the few posters I look forward to reading responses from….
February 27th, 2007 at 6:52 am
The thing that excites me about Lucas is that he might have the same mojo and hoops IQ as Taurean Green. You would hope that the Lucas family’s hoops lineage would mean that Jai comes in with a high basketball IQ, which this program sorely needs.
February 27th, 2007 at 7:19 am
21.
A high basketball IQ is what this team needs! NOne of the current veteran players seem to have it.
The freshman class does show signs, but if they are constantly battling against the uppers, then it’s
a no wonder we can’t succeed as a team. Everyone has to buy into the team concept. Something I don’t
think has happened with this group yet. Everytime you see one of the underclassmen make a positive, one
of the upperclassmen perform a negative!
Kentucky needs another higher Basketball IQ class to go with this Freshman class!
February 27th, 2007 at 7:22 am
Random thought to lighten the day :
Many athletes and other celebrities these days are using nicknames derived from the first letter of their first name, and the first few letters of their last name - A-Rod, T-Mac,
J-lo, etc…
One of my favorite golfers of all time ( he won several British Opens ) is Tom Watson. T-Wat.
February 27th, 2007 at 7:43 am
“Tubby and company would get nothing out of having random people call and yell at him….that is what message boards are for! From a PR perspective, I think it was a mistake…..but is it important? In my view, no.”
Wrong.
On message boards, Tubby doesn’t have to answer any questions. But on call-in shows, he does. He has to explain his position to any and everybody listening. If the screeners do their jobs, then the questions that are asked will be ones that the fanbase as a whole are interested in asking.
Basically, Tubby has to explain to the people who make him the highest paid coach in America.
What he did was cowardly, and he should be criticized for it.
February 27th, 2007 at 8:11 am
1.) For everybody calling for Tubby’s head: If Tubby leaves for any reason before next season, we lose Patterson and Lucas. Period. So we wind up with AJ Stewart (who might leave), that Mike guy (who, last we checked, wasn’t playing with his HS team), and a couple folks who might as well be walk-ons. Essentially, we’re crippled for the next 2 - 4 seasons at least. That’s not worth it to me. If Tubby gets Jai and PP, he’ll have two solid classes in a row, and he’s back on track.
2.) Who, exactly, are we going to hire? Let that sink in for a minute. Who? If recruits aren’t drawn to campus based on UK’s history anymore, why should we assume a coach would? If Barnhart has any thought of handing Tubby his walking papers, I certainly hope he’s pulled a Jurich and lined up a replacement ahead of time. Otherwise, we look like Alabama: they got turned down by Rodriguez and others and wound up with a so-so guy (and traitor), and paid him three times what he’s worth.
For my money, I’d stick with Tubby for at least two more seasons provided he can land either Jai or PP.
February 27th, 2007 at 8:18 am
I can see it now. Tubby relents and gets an entirely new staff. But, to get in one last
dig he hires Buzz Peterson, Dave Odom, and Ron Jursa.
February 27th, 2007 at 8:26 am
This was a disappointing blog (minus JR Cash) given the amount of material out there. As an reporter you took the potential newss and dismissed or blew off (Buyout and MB) and hype up this rediculous junk with Eric Crawford again. Move on with Crawford. I am not sure the goal of this blog, but I think many of the topics and your response are absolutely incorrect. Maybe take a mulligan on this one and do over.
February 27th, 2007 at 8:29 am
Matt, will you follow Tubby to his next job? You are obviously in love …. you’re in the shall I send flowers/it can still work out stage of the breakup …. lol
February 27th, 2007 at 8:37 am
the NBA is out!!!
February 27th, 2007 at 8:38 am
I agree that the best answer for Tubby’s sake would be to replace the assistants, and bring in an offensive specialist. Personally, I think the relationship with the fan base is too poisoned to continue. Also, if any thinks he will fire Hobbs, they are crazy. Anyone who realizes the relationship between those two would know that won’t happen. Tubby seems to be very loyal to his friends (they were Best Man in each other’s weddings). I think the onus is on Hobbs to save his friend and resign and move to another position. Rigot and Hanson should do likewise. If push comes to shove, Mitch will will order Tubby to make the changes, Tubby will refuse and he will resign or be shown the door.
February 27th, 2007 at 8:41 am
This program is fast becoming a joke outside of those wearing blue tinted glasses.Face the facts or continue to make excuses- doesn’t matter because in the end the truth will be main painfully clear !
February 27th, 2007 at 8:42 am
#25 Answer one question, what if PP and jai don’t come? Does that make your 2 statements null and void. Meaning that junk you wrote is nonsense, which in all reality it is.
February 27th, 2007 at 8:47 am
ITS TOO LATE JUST TO REPLACE A COPLE OF ASST. COACHES HE SHOULD HAVE DONE THAT LAST YEAR
LIKE EVERYBODY TOLD HIM BUT HE REFUSED.THE PROGRAM IS TOO DAMAGED IT NEEDS NEW BLOOD TO
REINVIGORATE THE PROGRAM AND GET PEOPLE EXCITED.WE MAY LOSE A FEW RECRUITS BUT IT WILL BE WORTH IT.
February 27th, 2007 at 8:58 am
The cancer will soon be gone. Good to see Jai and PP are being patient. They will love UK and the new coach.
February 27th, 2007 at 9:01 am
This goes back to my previous post of Tubby being a victim of his own “success.” Now Barnhart has drawn his line in the sand and we will lose assistants next year (finally). Just like Brooks, you can stand up for your men all you want, but when push comes to shove, you do what’s best for you and your team. If you want to go down without righting the ship, then that will be your legacy.
For all of those that think we couldn’t get a top-notch coach, two things: 1) We can get a top notch “name” coach, 2) The UK name and mystique, though tarnished, still exists and helps make mediocre coaches great…if they can handle the pressure.
February 27th, 2007 at 9:02 am
#25 I think Nick Saban could be considered more than a “so-so coach” as you call him. He does have a national championship on his resume, so it’s not like Bama had to settle for a terrible coach, regardless of his personal ethics.
February 27th, 2007 at 9:03 am
I just don’t see why Patterson or Lucas would come to UK just to save Tubby for a year. It would be a stupid move. I doubt they want to sit out a year at another school or be obligated to play for an unknown at Kentucky. Frankly I think they would be nuts to get to UK unless they win it all this year. That would give Tubby 4 more years.
February 27th, 2007 at 9:07 am
I would like to say that I have followed this website for about 7 months now out of the advice of some friends of mine. These gentlemen that I know are actually highschool buddies of yours Matt, Kenny and D.J. I say all this because I have just been sitting back and reading but I feel now it is time to make a statement. A lot of people want to get rid of Tubby and I think it could possibly be the best thing for the program in the long run. If he does stay he does need to remove all his assistants and start over with a whole new plan. The first plan is to get aan associate head coach who can coah an offensive scheme that is worth watching and can actually produce points on the board. This man should alos be a goo recruiter. Most importantly he should be a Kentucky boy. Some one who could let the kids know what the name on the jersey stands for and how youuu should play with heart when you have that Jersey on. The man the need to get is John Pelphry. Look at his body of work. He was Billy D’s top recruiter for many years and has turned an awful program into a winner. He took South Alabama to the NCAA’s last year and they are in good shape to make it again. You bring him is as associate head coach and that will give him time to grow and possibly become the main man when Tubby decides to leave.
I think if Tubby leaves it should be on his own. He deserves that and as adults we should all give him that type of respect. Most of you would expect the same from anyone else. Like I said I am not a fan of OTS but I think he should be allowed to leave as amn on his own.
I enjoy the sight it is pretty entertaining.
February 27th, 2007 at 9:10 am
Replace Hobbs and Rigot with Buzz Peterson and Kyle Macy. If Tubby doesnt get it done next year, make Macy the new head coach. He loves U of K and will give his heart for it.
February 27th, 2007 at 9:13 am
Larry Coker replaced a bunch of assistannts and finished worse than the prior year. Tubby may end up the same way. I think Tubby would leave before getting rid of people. This program also needs more than Lucas and Patterson to be good enough for a serious FF run. The current Junior class does not know how to win when it counts.
February 27th, 2007 at 9:20 am
#38 That is just what we need. A couple more former head coaches who couldn’t get it done so we put them on the staff. Lets get some new blood on the bench beside tubby. We need an offensive coach in the worst way.
February 27th, 2007 at 9:21 am
KSR goes national!!!! SI.com has an article about the atmosphere in Rupp for the Florida game. The “Doug Gottlieb took my wallet” sign got mentioned. Link is here .
February 27th, 2007 at 9:25 am
Tubby will get at least one more year. If he gets PP & Jai
he will get more time. Starting Wednesday, Tubby needs to yank
anyone who is not giving 110%, make Morris sleep in Wildcat
Lodge not under the basket.
Do not let Crawford dribble the ball late in the game. Do not
let Bradley play the point in the last 3 minutes!
February 27th, 2007 at 9:26 am
TUBBY WILL LEAVE WHO WOULD STICK AROUND AFTER ALL THIS FALLOUT WITH MUCH MORE TO COME?
Have you watched this team no way they have a big ncaa run.Its over for TUBBY.
Anyone who does’nt think so needs to put down the crack pipe.
February 27th, 2007 at 9:33 am
42. Why would anyone go to a school where the coach will be “given at least one more year”?
February 27th, 2007 at 9:37 am
We are 19 points total from being 24-5 right now. That’s not a sign of a complete
collapse.
February 27th, 2007 at 9:37 am
Rumors in South Carolina is that Odom will be out and Tubby will get another chance @ USC
February 27th, 2007 at 9:47 am
If getting rid of Tubby mean lossing Lucas and Patterson, than that’s a sacrifice I’m willing to make
February 27th, 2007 at 9:48 am
If (head coaching)changes are made and as a result we don’t get at least one of these recruits get ready for some 15+ loss seasons. Simply b/c the cupboard will be bare, insofar as players jumping ship, not commiting, and decommiting. Expect to loss for a few seasons and for the fans to try and fire another coach if/when that happens. If Tubby gets canned or bought out I’m resigning myself to watching us suck for a few years at the very least. Were eating our young folks.
Tubby won’t be at USC that’s a fact. If he goes anywhere he will jump to the NBA.
February 27th, 2007 at 9:52 am
Also I think they should replace Rigot and maybe encourage Hanson to take a head coaching job at a big DII or small DI school. Hanson is a good recruiter but defensively our big men have been a liability the last few years and I can help but wonder how he factors into that…..We need a Reggie Theopolis type recruiter to replace him though if that scenario occured.
February 27th, 2007 at 9:52 am
Macy?
Morehead State is better without him than with him. If he can make everyone shoot free throws like em yeah then bring him in for that sole purpose, but otherwise what is the point? He loves UK? So do I, but what in the hell does that matter? We need a asst’s that are either young and fiery with great recruiting skills or have big conference experience they can bring to the bench like Skip at Florida. Think about how much better UF has played since they brought him in. Donovan’s D was average at best before the hire.
February 27th, 2007 at 9:52 am
I Like Jai Lucas he plays good
February 27th, 2007 at 9:52 am
Somtimes a house is so damaged, you have to tear it down a build a new one.
February 27th, 2007 at 9:54 am
A new coach may bring a few recruits as well
February 27th, 2007 at 9:56 am
Neat Fact- My dad builds houses, then can take up to months to build!
February 27th, 2007 at 10:01 am
Also as far as Tubby leaving on his own. I’ll give you 25 million reasons he won’t. What would they pat at USC 1.5 per year for 5? Maybe less or more. He makes more than anyone. He will not leave the golden goose no matter how many alumni he looses as friends. I have never doubted his character, but he can leave his family enough money to last generations if they don’t blow it. Remember at the end of the day this is his career.
February 27th, 2007 at 10:03 am
25 million is a lot of money dollars, Tubby kneeds to start paying for players to play for the Basketball Cats LOL!
February 27th, 2007 at 10:07 am
#55Hes going to be given a golden parachute and he will leave watch
and see.
February 27th, 2007 at 10:09 am
# 57 one of these days that old rumor will come true. I doubt it happens within the next 2 years.
February 27th, 2007 at 10:12 am
we’ll see
February 27th, 2007 at 10:13 am
I don’t think Tubby should be fired . But tubby does need to make some changes in his coaching staff .I think we need to make some changes like Billy D did .
February 27th, 2007 at 10:20 am
Tubby will be gone after this year write it down.
Think what you want the preassure is killing his family
money is not everything and hes already got plenty. They
will give him some more and wish him good luck. The majority
of UK fans want him gone including the big money boosters
my father knows several. He can’t undue the damage he has done.
February 27th, 2007 at 10:21 am
Bozich never holds himself accountable. He writes stuff then hopes everyone forgets when it turns out to be wrong.
February 27th, 2007 at 10:36 am
Announcement forthcoming today on another 2008 recruit signing. Hearing Kenny Frease
gave his verbal to Kats.
February 27th, 2007 at 10:45 am
#63, where did you hear this? Now that’s one rumor I would like to come true.
February 27th, 2007 at 10:57 am
#18 says fire Hobbs and Rigot .. Well I hope David retires
mainly because he’s the mirror image of Tubby in Xs and Os.
AS for firing anyone, the only allegations against any of them
that I’ve seen was that Reggie blew the recruting fo Brandan Wright ..
that same would have had us in the top 5 and none of this disucssion
would be going on .. If it’s true, that would be a strong case against
Reggie if someone has to be fired to appease the fans
February 27th, 2007 at 11:10 am
Thank you Rick Bozich for an excellent article in the Courier today. What you said needed to be said and was right on target You are a true professional sport’s editorialist, the only working one in Kentucky.
February 27th, 2007 at 11:10 am
Let’s look at the logic here behind Jai Lucas. He’s waiting to see the coaching situations. So that means he is extremely serious about UK and wants to be here. He realizes this school needs him. Are there any other schools on his list that have coaching situations? He’s definitely referring to UK and if he’s waiting, then he wants to come here. If he comes here, I think we get Patterson as well. Raise your hand if you would feel better about Tubby if he got Lucas and Patterson. I see a few hands. If he doesn’t get either, the end has come. 69, Vegas has set the over/under at 12 for the number of minutes it will take for your post to be deleted.

And BAM!, it’s gone in only 3.
February 27th, 2007 at 11:21 am
Matt wants all my posts for himself. Poor guy is totally infatuated with my greatness.
February 27th, 2007 at 11:22 am
Seriously, Why did the post get deleted?
February 27th, 2007 at 11:29 am
It seems to me Gary Williams will be at Maryland, so if Jai Lucas was going to Maryland he would have already committed, no coahcing change there. It is really looking like Jai wants to go to UK,IF TUBBY is the COACH. PPat and Jai want to play together, both are McDonald’s AA’s and could make the announcement at the game they will becoming to UK!
February 27th, 2007 at 11:36 am
Amen #72! If Tubby can make it that far, I think we could be in for some good news! We need to get the Jai Lucas Patrick Patterson Chant going at the McDonalds AA game, and be loud as hell in Rupp on Wednesday for Senior Night.
February 27th, 2007 at 11:38 am
Matt,
What radio were you on with Eric Crawford? Were you on a different radio show other than yours?
February 27th, 2007 at 11:54 am
You mentioned the possible future of the station and site. Please Please Please tell me you are taking Cris Cross and Mike Cameron’s spot on 1300 from 4:00 to 6:00 every day. You have an out-of-towner who knows nothing about UK basketball before the year 2000 and a horse guy with the prime time and station talking about UK when they have no business doing so. Please give me some good listening during that time.
February 27th, 2007 at 12:15 pm
Matt,
you hear anything about an 08 verbal? I saw one poster mention Frese, I
hear it’s Kevin Jones the PF out of money earnin’ Mt. Vernon.
February 27th, 2007 at 12:30 pm
What’s all the talk that if Tubby leaves or gets fired, we lose Patterson and Lucas. How do we know they’re not waiting to see who the new coach will be if Tubby leaves. Maybe they like Kentucky, but not the style of ball being played there at this time. There have been other kids that turned UK down because they didn’t like Tubby ball. A new coach could bring them to UK. What’s holding them back ? UK or Tubby ball ????
February 27th, 2007 at 12:44 pm
63 & 77, Why would you all stir stuff up about getting commitments?
February 27th, 2007 at 12:52 pm
Stroker Ace, Bama had 7 FB coaches in 8 years IIRC. Not just Saban, and if Saban sees more money somewhere else, he will be gone again.
February 27th, 2007 at 12:54 pm
Any chance if Jai signs that his Dad becomes one of our assistants? I know it’s crazy, but I can dream, can’t I?
February 27th, 2007 at 12:56 pm
If one were to commit it would make sense it is Kevin Jones since his downside on recruiting sites is his undersized for position. We like undersized PF’s at UK.
February 27th, 2007 at 1:07 pm
Not sturring anything up, I think we have

If it comes down to it, this is going to play out just like the Brooks-Barnhart drama a few years ago. Barney will demand staff changes and Tubby will defend his coaches. The result will be either the assistants resign willingly to end the standoff (as Hudson did in football)or Tubby will go down with his staff (as Brooks would have done if Hudson hadn’t did what he did).
The result? Tubby will look for a fresh start in the NBA, which will be the cleanest solution for everyone. Thus sidestepping the entire drama and ending the Tubby era with some still-good feelings to remember it by. The downside is that this will probably cost us Lucas and Patterson, which will make next year a much worse season than it otherwise would have been.
February 27th, 2007 at 1:37 pm
The one good thing about this blog, the funny posts that I read that crack me up! At least there is still humor in Big Blue Nation!
February 27th, 2007 at 1:37 pm
Don’t look for Tubby to go anywhere, but don’t be surprised to see John Lucas
come in with Jai when he commits. With the right people coaching with Tubby, and
doing the things that they are supposed to do to contribute to the overall good
in all aspects of the program, things can and will improve.
February 27th, 2007 at 1:53 pm
Let’s face it. Losing out on a couple of recruits pales in comparison to getting a fresh start with a new and improved coach. Let’s not let this SPIN take our eye off the ball/ It’s time for a change!!
February 27th, 2007 at 2:02 pm
Tubby Rulez he is the best coach, He has one Nationel Championship
February 27th, 2007 at 2:04 pm
Well Frease officially DID NOT commit.
February 27th, 2007 at 2:14 pm
88, did you ride the short bus?
February 27th, 2007 at 2:22 pm
Is it wrong of me to hope this team loses the rest of their games? They won’t make any noise in the NCAA tournament if they make it, so maybe the best thing will be for them to loose out, that way it’ll be a no brainer on firing Tubby.
February 27th, 2007 at 2:40 pm
Boofdaddy, short answer: Yes, it’s wrong … if you are a UK fan.
February 27th, 2007 at 2:42 pm
#91, it is not a 22-13 record and 2nd round tourney loss that makes UK look bad to the rest of the bball world, it is posts like yours.
February 27th, 2007 at 2:48 pm
#93, why is that? Honestly, will it be better for us to make the NCAA and lose in the second round, and keep the Tubbster, or lose out and fire him?
February 27th, 2007 at 2:57 pm
boof, no it’s not wrong. I don’t feel that way, but if you think it’s in the long term interests of the program then you can still be a fan and feel that way. It’s a fan’s version of tough love. Many many people will tell you that you’re not a fan if you feel that way, but they’re wrong. I may disagree with you, and I do, but I understand why you feel that way.
February 27th, 2007 at 3:02 pm
“Raise your hand if you would feel better about Tubby if he got Lucas and Patterson. I see a few hands. If he doesn’t get either, the end has come. But let’s support until the outcome is set.”
A lot of hands aren’t raised. Mainly because why would we expect Patterson and Lucas to fix what the number one recruiting class in the country couldn’t? And why would anyone think that 2 recruits will buck the 14 year trend and become the first Tubby recruits to EVER make the final four? That’s fools gold and I’m not buying.
February 27th, 2007 at 3:03 pm
Hey, all you politically corrects (#92, #93) it’s game time. We won’t get better until Tubby is gone. BoofDaddy is right a couple of losses will be like a band-aid. We’ll rip it right off!!! I don’t want him to weasel out of the box he has put himself in. Otherwise we’re back to a couple fo good years and then a couple of bad years. No more roller coaster please. I’ll take Calipari or Donovan please. Thank you.
February 27th, 2007 at 3:14 pm
If you ever under any circumstance want the Cats to lose, go away - at least until you get your mind right. If there is a change, so be it. But, publically rooting for losses shows a lack of grit and class.
February 27th, 2007 at 3:17 pm
Hey #98, if mediocrity is what you want then you just keep on keepin on.
February 27th, 2007 at 3:23 pm
If the Cats go 0-30, I’ll be living and dying with each game. Same if they were 30-0. Publically rooting for your team to lose is unpardonable. Btw, a change is good, but that really has nothing to do with this point.
February 27th, 2007 at 3:24 pm
#75 Matt S, my hand is in the air.
Not that it right but didn’t Zona have like 12 loses back in 97 when they beat us for the title?
February 27th, 2007 at 3:28 pm
ricdix, I know they had a few losses. And if Tubby pulls off that feat then I’ll be all over the place with public apologies to him and the staff.
February 27th, 2007 at 3:35 pm
Like Barnhart said, let’s wait until the end of the year and see where we are at. Also, rooting agianst Kentucky to lose to get rid of Tubby is like rooting on the US to lose the war in Iraq so that we get out soon. It’s just not right.
February 27th, 2007 at 3:58 pm
Its not mediocrity to root for the cats everytime, its mediocrity to root against them in a time of need. You can’t be a fan if you aren’t with them in the good and the bad.
February 27th, 2007 at 4:01 pm
Then you just keep on rooting for them in their time of need. Which will last until OTS hits the door.
February 27th, 2007 at 4:20 pm
I think that Tubby should stay, that way us Florida Gator fans can keep whooping you all. And also, Tubby is a good lover. Thanks for all the get well wishes with my recent butt surgery. Doctors told me to stay away from using the ‘double studded.’ Go Tubby, Go Gators, and GO Noah!!
February 27th, 2007 at 4:28 pm
if you want your program to go 22-10 50% of the time Tubby is the perfect coach. 10 at UK 5 10 plus loss seasons, I am including this season.
February 27th, 2007 at 4:35 pm
What about a guy like Rex Chapman sitting beside Tubby next year.
He is smart and, has a high basketball IQ. He would be a name that
the program could identify with. He would bring, style and flare to the
program.
February 27th, 2007 at 4:36 pm
If you want a coaching change it is in order to fix the losing.
If you want UK to lose to make a coaching change it is b/c you have a problem with the person themselves. That’s messed up.
February 27th, 2007 at 4:42 pm
108. I’ve heard Rex say that he didn’t enjoy a lot of stuff about his time at UK and in interviews it sounds like he isn’t a big fan of the program. Dunno if that has mellowed recently but he came out and said some nasty stuff, as recently as last year, about his time at UK.
February 27th, 2007 at 4:43 pm
Here is a Chapman article to that affect….
http://sports.espn.go.com/ncb/news/story?id=2061773
sorry for the multiple posts.
February 27th, 2007 at 4:45 pm
Not true Wed. Some say the only way Tubby is fired is if he misses the tournament. So theoretically he could continue like last year and keep his job. Since NOONE will match what he’s making here he won’t quit, that’s leaving too much money on the table. So now you’re left with the decision, is the e8 every 2-3 years good enough, or do we think we can acheive more. If you think that we can acheive more it’s logical that you would want Tubby gone(since he’s not proven that he can build a team to surpass that level). We know he won’t quit, so that’s not an option. Then you’re left do you root for short term success at the expense of long term greatness, or root for losses in order to take a shot at getting a coach with a higher ceiling? That’s not personal, it’s just about what each individual thinks is best for the program.
February 27th, 2007 at 4:48 pm
If we quit losing and get to the elite 8 or final four then to me the problem is fixed. I doubt that is going to happen and agree that some changes may need to be made but to actively want the team to lose is sacrilege. You might as well puch my mother.
February 27th, 2007 at 4:49 pm
punch that is…punch my mother….
February 27th, 2007 at 4:59 pm
Wed, like I said, as tempting as it is for me to want that, I can’t. I cant root for them to lose. But I do understand the mentality. It’s rooted in the fact that there is no way a man who refuses to take responsibility will walk away from 2 million per year.
February 27th, 2007 at 5:32 pm
PTI (Pardon the Interuption) is about to discuss/comment about Tubby (”Is Tubby in trouble?”)
February 27th, 2007 at 5:51 pm
FYI, quick summation of PTI:
Is Tubby on the hotseat with UK unranked this close to selection Sunday and a 19-9 record?
Tony says definitely. But before you hail him as a sensible prophet, haters, he and Michael go on to acknowledge that UK is always a hot seat (and the hottest seat in college basketball). Joe B. knew it, Sutton knew it, and Rick was fortunate enough to come in when UK was at its lowest. The guys remind that there are only 2 coaches with a title in the SEC, and Tubby’s one of them (even if they were Rick’s players).
They say he’s on the hotseat, but don’t talk about firing until we get 3 straight years without a NCAA tourney appearance.
February 27th, 2007 at 7:02 pm
Some people think that if we make a miraculous elite 8 run that will solve all the problems we have. Why do you think that? 2 years ago we had an elite 8 run and the very next year we had one of the worst seasons in recent history… that is of course, until this year. Atleast last year it was chemistry, this year we have the peices it seems, but the bewildering coaching decisions down the stretch are almost unwatchable. Plain and simple, Tubby has not fixed his recruiting ways. When we signed the current senior class he basically got all of his second or third choice recruits… and the last two years we’ve been paying for it.
However, after coming back with the 04 class he signed the current sophmore class, which will soon be non existant once Carter joins the current freshman class next year, and that is an even worst class when you look at it. Last year he signed a good class, but he still missed on many players he was hoping for and he’s really only let one of the freshman make an impact. He’s still determined in his own mind to let hte senior class prove they weren’t a bust. So he brings in Finney, and things are looking up, but the 07 class still looks AT BEST 50/50 for being another bust. Stewarts good people, but he can’t be the headliner of the class. How many years of less then steller recruiting does it take? Unless we sign Patterson AND Lucas we are in serious trouble. Period. Regardless of what kind of finish we have to the season.
February 27th, 2007 at 7:32 pm
Actually, as far as the current freshmen class, Jasper has started almost all year, and Meeks has now played himself into starter minutes, and has been running the offense at times. In fact, were he not perhaps still suffering from cramps, I might have expected him to have the ball at the end against Vandy.
As for the other 3 freshman, Porter has played himself out of minutes, and I don’t know what it is with Stevenson (I can only guess it’s related to how he practices).
This year’s class will really be a lynchpin - on that supporters and detractors agree. Bring in Patterson and Lucas, and this team looks a lot better, especially if Morris returns. Fail to get Patterson and Lucas, and we have only projects and hopes (Stevenson to get bigger, Williams to turn into a beast, Jasper or Porter to be the PG of the future).
But since we won’t know about Jai and PP for at least weeks, if not months more, maybe we shouldn’t try to sum up the 07 class yet.
Regardless of what kind of finish we have to the season? That’s bull and you know it. A championship (miraculous based on current play) and most people will be right back on the Tubby bandwagon. A Final Four and people will have to acknowledge it. Anything less…well, it’s what we’re all expecting, so I guess people can be suitably annoyed/upset if/when that happens.
Until then, we’re still alive for the SEC Tourney title. We’re still alive for the National title. We’re still alive for Jai and PP. And Stewart, Williams, Jai and PP can all come in, join the Seniors and Sophomores, and be the best team in the country next year.
Optimistic, yes, but infinitely more satisfying than the pessimism so many have given in to.
February 27th, 2007 at 7:36 pm
JAI is OU bound…lets move on..
February 27th, 2007 at 7:45 pm
120) So, where’s your scoop from? Is Jai coming to Lexington tomorrow night to announce his decision not to come here?
February 27th, 2007 at 7:50 pm
Han you are Infinitely daydreaming is more like it… no reasonable end to the season.. no REASONABLE end to the season will change anything UNTIL TUBBY CHANGs HIs recruiting…or until he plays his best players. do you ever read the stuff I write… or do you just comment and make your own conclusions?
February 27th, 2007 at 9:00 pm
Yes, because it’s rational to suggest even winning a championship wouldn’t appease people around here - you know that is bull.
If Tubby wins a championship this year, people will kiss Bobby Perry’s feet.
Why? Because most UK fans care more about the result at the end of the season than who gets us there.
And again, this recruiting season isn’t over for UK until JL and PP commit. If that happens, no changes needed beyond those made this past off season.
February 27th, 2007 at 9:02 pm
And quit indirectly insulting my intelligence and ability to connect with reality. It’s small of you. At least I only challenge your (and others’) loyalty to the team.
February 27th, 2007 at 9:31 pm
Well, I’m sorry if I offended you, but it’s offensive to me to even suggest that I’m not loyal because I don’t think we could possibly win a title this year, especially after the way tubby’s coached the last few games. I’m loyal as can be. But I’m loyal to the university and to the team, not to the man running the team. Being loyal to the university means doing whatever is best for the team and future, even if that makes a few people worried that we’ll be bad for a year.
You insult my intelligence when you act like I don’t know that Jasper has started most of the year, but he hasn’t been allowed to make an impact in the sense that down the stretch he’s usually on the bench in favor of a turnover prone Ramel Bradley. Stevenson is now playing zero minutes in games where as most think he shoudl start, if not play a huge portion of the minutes. And when it’s convenient for you you’ll say it’s because he’s being diciplined, well that’s bull. Tubby picks in choses who he wants to play and it has nothing to do with praciting or class… otherwise he wouldn’t play crawford 34 minutes after skippping class… the same game that Stevenson gets zero minutes. He’s not letting a very talented freshman class fully help ease the pain of his other recruiting failures. And NO MATTER WHAT!!! NO ONE WILL EVER KISS THE FEET OF BOBBY PERRY other then tubby smith, or bobby’s future wife… which may or may not be you.
February 27th, 2007 at 9:38 pm
Oh, and I never said the 07 class was over… (once again YOU indirectly insult my intelligence) but you said it best… it’s not over til JL and PPat make their decisions… it’s sad that if they go elsewhere the recruiting class is still over because we have zero credible back up plans and by that point it will be to late to sign any 4 of the remaining top 150 players… everyone else has got there class… if duke misses on ppat thye’ve still got 2 other MDAA’s to help them out… if osu misses on Jai Lucas they’ve still got a solid class… where are we at? we’re “50/50 on having a bust in 07…” just like i said in my first post.. which you obviously didn’t understand because you want to then go on to tell me that the class isn’t over yet… as always thanks for the insight.
