Calipari “driving around Memphis” trying to decide

by @ 11:38 am. Filed under Blue Blooded Opinions

While John Calipari does his best Marc Cohn impression and drives around Memphis, trying to decide on which job to take, John Clay is reporting that Memphis has ponied up more cash than UK in their latest offer to Calipari.

This is going to make one hell of a book one day…

    Man we better get him

  2. StitchJonesSays Says:

    I am so damn nervous!

  3. votedmostlikelytokickurazz Says:

Let’s just hope he’s driving around Lexington in the next couple of days..

  4. s9m3h74 Says:

Memphis can “pony up” all the money they want, we still have better resources and deeper pockets if it really comes to this.

  5. BigBlueSupporter Says:

maybe he will get car jacked and that will make his mind up for him.

  6. NashvilleCats Says:

Well, unless he’s in an armored car, there’s a 50% chance he’ll be shot by a stray bullet in Memphis. He needs to be careful out there.

  7. BLUEBALLS Says:

WHAT AM I READING? I THOUGHT IT WAS A DONE DEAL??
WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON??

  8. jorts wearing cat fan Says:

    lets offer him fort knox

  9. s9m3h74 Says:

This is the guy that could come in and take us past UCLA dammit, do whatever it takes!!!

  10. JKW1974 Says:

This is pretty much in line with what was discussed this morning in Nashville. Dave Baker was on 104.5, stating that the longer this is dragged out, the more likely it is that he will not accept. He has done this before (NC State) to get more cash and other comp out of Memphis and the boosters.

I hope it happens, but I am not as optimistic.

  11. Assassin Number 2 Says:

I hope a crazy homless guy decapitates a dead rabbit in front of him and steals his money. Please God let this happen. Just pick any old homless guy in Memphis and instruct him in your deep God voice to do this for us.

  12. PrinceFor3GOOOD Says:

I’ll cut his grass, rake his leaves, shovel his driveway, do his laundry, wash his car, pooper scoop his yard, paint his house, take his clothes to the dry cleaners, and be his DD. Now I know memphis can’t offer him all of that.

  13. BigJHagan Says:

DRIVE FAST!! This will be completely crushing if he doesn’t come. Trying to stay positive!

  14. jon in jeff Says:

He’s actually in a cab riding around Memphis. And guess who his cab driver Habib realy is. Thats right! KSR own Matt Jones. Further updates coming.

  15. admankyfan Says:

Cal needs to realize that he will likely NEVER get an opportunity of this proportion again…he needs to leave the C-USA school if he wants to become a legend…and UK is perfect for that, if that’s what he’s concerned with. I would hate to lose a coaching fight with MEMPHIS!!!!

  16. DavidEShelton Says:

    Memphis Commercial Appeal

    the act.

  17. StitchJonesSays Says:

I have been to Memphis and the traffic sucks there. Picture Nicholasville Rd on a Saturday during Christmas…it is like that 24/7 in the crappy town!

  18. fearnloathing20 Says:

This has finally went over the deep end and this Liberal just stopped caring about all of this. In this economy where sooo many can’t find jobs two of the states with the largest unemployment rates are gonna outstrip the highest NCAA salary by possible over 1,000,000 for a guy who has not won a NCAA championship? I love Cal and want him here but there is a price that is too high and I think that price may have already been reached and surpassed. Tom Izzo is a Very Good alternative and some of the other coaches could do a good job if selected. Problem is we have created a CIRCUS around this and if we do not get him we basically have shit the bed for the next coach because he will never get support from the fans.

This could be a economic, moral and actual disaster before the end of the day and I truly belive the only people who are not going to win in this deal are the lower class of Ky. (who are probably the biggest supporters of this decision)

THIS IS WAYYYY TOO MUCH MONEY

and yes I am well aware of how much money UK brings into the state but most of the money stay in athletics or goes to UK and Lexington…

  19. hootiehoo Says:

    Swing and a miss…..

  20. sangaman Says:

Jones/Beisner/Gidel/any other KSR blogger - If you read this and Cal does indeed come to UK, could one of you please write some posts to tone down the unrealistic expectations I’m seeing from fans just a little bit? I’m just afraid that the expectations will be set so unrealistically high for Calipari that fans will start getting disappointed if he doesn’t bring a championship to Lexington right away. The image that Kentucky fans have in the college basketball world as being unrealistic, unreasonable, and impatient only hurts our team and the last thing we need to do is reinforce that image by getting upset with Calipari early in his time at UK. I don’t want to see us run another talented coach out of town (I’m speaking of Tubby, not Gillispie). I am very optimistic and excited about Calipari, but I also know that it takes more than a little luck to win a national championship and that we shouldn’t judge him if he can’t win one in the first two or three years. Lets support Calipari and be grateful for the sacrifice he’s making by leaving Memphis behind and dedicating himself to returning UK to the top of the college basketball world.

  21. Smitty4UK Says:

Make a Calipari mask. Get them ready for the pep rally in Lexington. Hopefully Cal won’t cry like Billy did. Toughness from the start!

  22. Basteballer Says:

First, I believe that JCal is just letting Memphis down easy. He doesn’t want them to think he didn’t consider staying. But I don’t think there’s really much chance he won’t be UK’s next coach. Arizona can offer all day but it’s just not in our league.

More importantly, I can’t believe it’s after noon and there still has been no KSR tribute to Mr. Keightley!

  23. UK-Basketball-Freak Says:

Blog held this morning from the guys at Memphis Roar. This the same blog service that Matt uses and it’s already over, but you can see the discussions and where things are as of this morning as far as they know.

  24. PatMan Says:

** In addition to Kentucky, Arizona came after him over the weekend offering not a salary but a blank check. Calipari said, “No thanks.”

** He was in the Memphis Athletic Office Building yesterday but slipped out a side door.

** He loves Memphis but is drawn to the history and prestige of Kentucky. Calipari said it’s one of five programs — along with North Carolina, Duke, UCLA and Kansas — any coach would have to consider.

Nobody actually came out and asked Calipari if he was leaving, but he said he hadn’t made up his mind. He was going to drive around Memphis today and decide this afternoon.

If you’re into reading tea leaves — or coffee grounds, if you prefer — Calipari did say two things that should have Memphis fans worried.

“Things will be OK here,” he said.

And also: “Taking the job is the easy part of the decision. Leaving here is the hard part.”

  26. mdc Says:

A BLOGGER ON CATS PAUSE SAID THAT JOE CRAFT IS FLYING INTO LEXINGTON AND THAT THEY ARE SENDING A PLANE TO PICK-UP CALIPARI——DOES THIS SOUND LEGIT?

  27. Sam.the.Spear Says:

27- Even if it is legit, it won’t be long until Alan Cutler hijacks it and lands it right at the studio parking lot.

  28. Billyclyde-superglide Says:

I hate to sound like I’m raining on the day as well, but according to the Mizz Athletics Dept. Memphis HAS NOT asked permission to speak with their coach. Hopefully means nothing, but one thing is for sure, this is far from a done deal. It also removes any credibility that LEX had, which wasnt much to start with. That’s why I always go with KYT, they take no chances in their reporting, if Buzz and Bromley say its going to rain, get your umbrella.

Hmmm, what happens behind the white door?

  30. BuckeyeBigBlueFan Says:

I know that absolutely no one wants to consider this, but any inclination as to what UK would do if spurned by Calipari? Being left at the altar is hard enough in the hiring process for b-ball coaches, but even worse for a nationally prominent program like UK.

  31. TheManInTheBrownSuit Says:

I wish we knew what kind of donuts Coach Cal ordered at the donut shop…that could be crucial to any contract agreement.

I prefer Red’s in Paducah, that place is $$$$$. Send him a box of Red’s Donuts!

  32. BCO Says:

Ill build the man a donut shop with my bare hands….

  33. buddylove Says:

GIVE HIM A TRILLION DOLLARS !!!!!!!!! A HUMAN SACRIFICE!!!!!! ANNNNYYYTTHHHIIIIINNNNGGGGGG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  34. votedmostlikelytokickurazz Says:

    32) Forget Red’s, Spaldings in Lexington is the BEST EVER.

  35. jakeh Says:

    31 - craigslist

  36. Billyclyde-superglide Says:

If he doesn’t come, the scholarship thing will have played large. That’s what you get for offering to sub par talent, years in advance. Other than Orton, Ferguson, and Hood none are “Even close to U.K. Level Talent” to borrow a phrase from someone that knows. Thats why we don’t compete for Championships anymore.

  37. quietude38 Says:

32 - The only place better than Red’s might be The Pie Wagon in Mayfield. They’re certainly close.

One of the people who used to be involved with Red’s opened a donut shop in Mayfield as well, but I found theirs are a little too greasy.

  38. LeBowlingAlley Says:

I love that there is still a picture of Kige dressed up as Santa Claus at the bottom of every page.

  39. EquivocateR Says:

    19.

Kentucky’s lower class has spoken and they are willing to pay nearly 1/2 their 2nd quarter salary to get Calipari to the Bluegrass!!!

Some simple math says 32.4% of Americans (myself included) do not pay any income tax. With that being said, the bottom third of society can contribute exactly 0 dollars to the fundraising effort to buy Calipari via tax dollars. interesting, this is important to keep in mind.

now the income tax is only a federal tax, so state sales, property and education taxes are levied on the poor bottom 32.4%. However, the bottom 10% are actually paid state and federal money. we will call the taxes levied and the entitlements paid out a wash for the bottom 32.4%, highly unlikely to be true, but still highly interesting.

so, i believe the exorbitant salary of 10 million a year would actually be a progressive initiative to give the lower class the intangible benefit of pride in their basketball team, since logic dictates that something you enjoy but do not pay for is a net positive!!!!

don’t let the simpleton Marxist “fearandloathing20″ fool you KSR Faithful.

MEMPHIS NEEDS TO DO WHATEVER IT NEEDS TO TO DO TO GET OUT OF CON-USA AND JOIN A BCS CONFERENCE—I READ AN ARTICLE FROM THE MEMPHIS NEWSPAPER IN 2000 WHEN CALIPARI WAS HIRED–HE SAID THAT HE WANTED TO STAY AT MEMPHIS UNTIL HIS DAUGHTERS WERE OUT OF HIGH SCHOOL—-HIS DAUGHTERS ARE NOW IN COLLEGE——TIME FOR JC TO MOVE ON!!
