[Moderated by Matt Jones]

I freely admit to enjoying some television shows that are….to say the least, embarrassing. I have long been a fan of “American Idol”, I will watch any beauty pageant that is thrown my way (including Miss America tonight…..Miss Mississippi was robbed) and I have even been known to catch a little “Gilmore Girls” now and then. However when it comes to guilty pleasures, none is guiltier than my enjoyment of “The Hills” on MTV. The show is of course, a spinoff of the very popular “Laguna Beach,” (which I was so-so on) and it follows one of the individual from that show….the beautiful Lauren….as she tries to make a life for herself in Hollywood.
Why do I like the show…..three reasons. First, I am a sucker for the theme song, Natasha Bettingfield’s “Unwritten”….come on, you know the words: Staring, at the blank page before you, open up the dirty window…... Yes, as my fellow Hills watcher Mosley points out, it is an anthem truly meant for an 18 year old girl heading off into the Real World….but it speaks to me, and it can speak to you too!!! Second, I get odd pleasure out of making myself angry watching rich, spoiled kids complain about life. I am perfectly willing to admit that if I met these kids in real life, I would want to have all of them deported. But there is something about watching the train wreck that gives me glee….and often leads to conversations with the Turkey Hunter in which we debate if “Brody is right for Lauren” (its up in the air at this point). Finally, I love to tell women that I am a fan of “Audrina” on the show. Guys let me tell you something. If you want to make any girl in America angry at you, just tell them that you think Audrina is hot or the best girl on the show. They will literally have smoke coming from their ears in a matter of moments. Like a younger Allysa Milano, Audrina has some natural gene that causes all women to hate her and watching this Pavlovian reaction always amuses me. These three features, make “The Hills” must-see-tv and maybe my most guilty pleasure….at least when Match Game PM reruns are not on.
And yes I just spent two paragraphs talking about a show whose average viewing age is 14….sue me.
(1) This weekend saw the return of the man, Patrick Patterson to Durham, North Carolina for his unofficial visit at Duke University. This was (and still is) an important couple of days for the Patterson recruitment as it will give the Blue Devils a chance to make their final pitch to Patterson before he decides his final destination. He went to the Boston College game on Sunday Night (it was a special “No Cheating by the Referees Night” at Cameron Indoor) and will be playing a high school game there on Tuesday night. Reports have come in by some that the visit has gone well, while others say it has gone poorly. At this point, no one likely knows and people are making their determinations based on factors like Patterson’s expression at the BC game. Patterson is a normally stoic guy so I would read nothing into the fact that he didnt smile during the proceedings. As many of you know, I have always contended that Patterson’s fall visit didnt go well (still do) and thus this visit is of extreme importance. It should tell you how much Patterson’s father likes Duke and the respect the university has that another visit was taken…..no other university could likely pull that off.
As for UK’s standing with Patrick, it is the same now as it has been. The Pattersons are doing what they said they would do…..let the season play out, see how the teams perform and what individuals will be in place (coaches and players) at each program next year. I have believed for some time that Florida has been the leader (a belief that Patterson admitted recently that he held in the fall), but I also think that it is still any of the “Big 3″’s ball game. UK feels good about where they stand on this one, but I dont think anyone, maybe even Patrick, knows for sure how this will end. We will have Patrick on the air in the next two weeks. In the meantime, it is a waiting game for Patterson….a frustrating one for the fans, but an understandable one for the kid.
(2) Word has come out today that UK has been to see Louisiana point guard Josh White again in the last week. For those of you that dont know, White is a (repeat after me) “under the radar” point guard prospect that is being pursued as the likely backup option to Jai Lucas. White is very short…..listed at 5′10″, but likely shorter….and has been primarily a passer and distributor up unitl this season. But this year his scoring has increased and he is becoming a real threat on the offensive end. White has attracted interest from a number of programs, but Kentucky will likely be his best offer if he ever receives one. I understand Kentucky’s involvement with the kid but am of the belief that if the Cats do not get Lucas, they are better off looking for another bigger player rather than a guard…..Lucas is special, so they should take him…..but there isnt necessarily an instant need for a point guard in the class, so I might look elsewhere.
(3) It was correct that Darius Miller was at the Kentucky game on Sunday taking yet another unofficial visit. There has been some buzz recently that Miller “will never go to UK” and that he is headed for Tennessee no matter what. This is unequivocally false. Miller is actively considering UK (you dont take unofficials for your health) and likes UK, UT, Florida and Illinois at this point. The Miller recruitment will be full of misinformation as it seems that everyone in Mason County knows someone who has heard from someone where Darius is going. At this point Miller has not made up his mind, but UK is pursuing him VERY hard and I think they are the favorite at this point…..likely the only 08 kid that is one of UK’s primary targets that this can be said about at this time.
(4) Along those lines, there should be some positivity about the staff’s ability in recent months to get more and more young people to come early to take unofficial visits. This feature of recruiting has been sorely lacking in recent years and led by Shawn Finney, it is beginning anew. The dividends for such practices take awhile to showcase themselves, but they are of huge importance. A great number of kids have passed through Rupp Arena’s doors this year, and if a kid like Phillip Jurick ends up picking UK, these early visits will be a major part in that decision.
(5) Scott County sharpshooter Matt Walls has been asked to walk-on the team next year for the Cats. Walls is a great shooter and one of our top 5 seniors in the state. He will have the opportunity to play college basketball for free, either at the low Div 1 or NAIA levels, if he is so interested. Walk-ons are always bonus pickups, but this would not be a bad one at all.
Oh yeah, they raised ticket prices again for UK, including a big bump for the single game tickets for the Louisville game. Not a huge surprise and a function of the ever-increasing price of funding modern college athletics. Plus its best to do that after a (rare) winning season. I still wish that the Cats would find a way to do a $10 dollar seat type thing for fans who rarely get to come to Rupp and cant afford a game at Commonwealth. This is a poor state and many never get to see their favorite team in person. But of course, I am just dreaming on this…..but it would be a nice gesture.
Finally, many of you have emailed me in recent weeks and I have not been able to respond. I hope to do so in the next two days, but dont think I have ignored your questions and comments….I have just been swamped, but will get to them soon.
And if you didnt see it above, Marshall Moses committed to Oklahoma State.
Until later today……..

Josh White is one of the Top 10 players in Louisiana. He’s listed (by his HS roster) at 5-9 but not even that tall. Louisville C-J had a story on him a month ago but most ignored it. The kid can play. His brother played at Oklahoma.
I think Florida may have edged in fromnt for Darius Miller right now. That’s what his HS teammates think.
I hope Matt Walls comes to UK and maybe earns a scholarship as junior or senior.

Moses to OSU.
I’m angry.
Everyone should be.
January 29th, 2007 at 11:50 pm
#3, I’m not angry Moses committed to OSU; I’m angry in how UK handled Moses’ recruitment. Shameful.
January 29th, 2007 at 11:54 pm
Matt, I agree with you 100% about Darius Miller. He spends an awful lot of time in Rupp Arena for someone who supposedly doesnt like Kentucky. I think there is a lot of bad information out there about Darius. Lots of people claim to know someone that says Darius is Florida bound or UT bound but the inside sources are wrong on this one. He could end up anywhere but my gut tells me that he will be at Kentucky.

Due to restrictions imposed by our great city leaders (official and otherwise), I don’t get MTV here in ultra-conservative West Liberty; it taints our young. And E! is much lewder and risque.
MTV once mattered to me. And then I turned 10.

Well, no more point in whining over Moses. It’s over and done with.
Hey, Matt, have you ever talked to any recruits about how much attention they pay to who else a school is recruiting “ahead” of them? Clearly it was a factor in the loss (or release?) of Moses. It would be interesting to hear how important it is to a kid like PP or JL to know if they are a school’s #1 option, etc.
January 30th, 2007 at 1:33 am
FWIW, I like Josh White alot.
He is very “under the radar.”
I wouldn’t be angry if Tubby misses out on Lucas and brings White in.
Patterson or bust.
January 30th, 2007 at 2:19 am
Once again Tubby has focused laser-like on 1 target while all other legitimate options fall by the way-side.
For months now I’ve said the Patterson recruitment proves how stubborn Tubby is and how hard it is for him to learn from past mistakes. The Patterson recruitment is following the Brandan Wright scenario to a “T” and Tubby is locked in and has those blinders strapped on tightly while kids we could have had a long time ago (like Moses, Barnes, etc.,) give up and move on.
January 30th, 2007 at 6:18 am
I can’t recall, but the Morris recruitment has been of this type of magnititude.
Everyone thought that Tubby could not afford to miss out on him either. We put all of
our cards into the same small basket and waited. Without that class, Tubby would have really
been raked over for not bringing in top rated talent.
With Pat and Jai, you have to wait it out. If you have come this far and are this close, you
cannot pull out and move on. We wait and wait until the ‘kids’ make the decision. No one should
be surprised at the end. We narrowed our focus and depended on the MM event to reel them in, yet they
continue to wait.
I do think Tubby leaves on his own when that time comes, and I think he wants to right the ship before
moving on. This could be his last stop in coaching and for things he does right, he will never totally
win over the fan base. Very similar to Joe B. in that Joe B. couldn’t get out of the way with his
coaching ability. The man could recruit, but he struggled so much in Knoxville, and we were so inconsistent
in the tournament.
January 30th, 2007 at 7:47 am
Darius Miller will never be hooked to Tubbi’s plow. A Tubbi free UK could definitely bring this kid in and he could be huge in a rebuilding effort.
January 30th, 2007 at 7:56 am
I think it is a real shame to let Moses go like that.
I talked to a friend from E-town yesterday and he said that Tubby told E-town Coach James Haire that Tubby is going to offer Pettigrew, but gave no time frame. Take it with a grain of salt, but that is what is floating around E-town.
January 30th, 2007 at 8:21 am
Miller takes an unofficial visit for . . . the UT game. Who was he going to see? Hopefully, he was happy with the outcome.
January 30th, 2007 at 8:33 am
I watched “The Hills” once. Once.
January 30th, 2007 at 9:20 am
After all of the failed attempts at a big man, does anyone really believe that PP will come here??
We should have offered Moses instead of Lucas.
If we come away with a bad class(1 to 1 odds)it will lend more credibility that Orlandough is
leaving at the end of the season. Or maybe not since he usually strikes out.
January 30th, 2007 at 9:51 am
UK has signed a PF and C in the 2007 class already.
January 30th, 2007 at 10:11 am
We might’ve already signed a C and PF, but - with all due respect to those guys - nobody is expecting them to come in and be huge contributors right off the bat. Unfortunately, we’re in a position where we need someone ready to play forward for 20-25 minutes a game right away.

January 30th, 2007 at 10:45 am
I too have heard that Miller and Hopson and…..Mackey all want(ed) to play for UK but not for, uhh, some coach there.
White on rivals back in the summer called UK his Dream SChool.
January 30th, 2007 at 10:50 am
Why is Ramon Harris on tnis team? Why do you bring in a freshmen in the middle of the year? He misses summer play, fall workouts and conditioning and the like. One would expect that if you were going to do this, that there be an expectation that the player can contribute immediately. Obviously, from his brief appearances he is not an immediate impact player. So, why is he here. Given our situation, it would appear that ever opening is precious. Is this the latest example of outrageous poor decision making that has gotten us where we are today? Why are recruiting another point guard not named Lucas another very questionable decision. We need front court people not more guards.
January 30th, 2007 at 11:04 am
#21 Stewart is a 2-time FL All-Stater/state champion and MVP of FL state tournament last year.
Williams is a 7-footer with more skills already in HS than Shagari had in college. Shag was tall, that’s all.
Ramon Harris was Gatorade HS A-A, Alaska POY, and 4-time state champion. He has good skills and will be a fine player at UK. Kentucky plays 3 G, 1 F, 1 C offense. He’s a F and fourth in line there.
Jai Lucas is a superb PG who led his teams to titles in AAU and camp play last summer.
January 30th, 2007 at 11:28 am
Tom Gray, UK plays a 3G, 1F, 1C offense because of the out-of-balance roster that has evolved over the past several years due to player defections and recruiting misses.
Or another theory would be, if there weren’t 3 guards, how would the offense be able to maintain enough players planted in concrete outside the 3-point line so they can pass the ball to each other to wind down the shot clock and pound the ball into the court?
January 30th, 2007 at 11:28 am
#24 Many reports state that Stewart is the third best player on his team. That seems about right for one of Tubbys recruits.
Williams is a project. Anyone who refutes that has had a cranial-rectal-inversion.
What the hell does Lucas have to do with a PF discussion?
January 30th, 2007 at 11:29 am
Matt,I keep hearing that PP is waiting in part to see what players and coaches are returning but if he makes his decision in early March as reported won’t he be making his decision before he knows what players and coaches are returning?
January 30th, 2007 at 11:57 am
#27 not if you believe the latest going around. Rumor has it that the big money guys are fed up
with TUbby and are forcing a change. It has been said that we will get an announcement shortly before the SEC tourney that Tubby is stepping down.
January 30th, 2007 at 12:05 pm
#23 Give Ramon Harris more time and he will make you proud. Yes, he hasn’t played much, but has several things in his game that are impressive. He is already one of the better passers on the team. His size and athleticism allows him to be versatile enough to play three positions. And he possesses a great attitude. A team player with his skills that wants to be here is underrated.
January 30th, 2007 at 12:08 pm
It has also been said that for a fitty spot OH can have a dude oft.
January 30th, 2007 at 12:09 pm
#28, I am sure IT has been said, but the question is WHO said IT?
January 30th, 2007 at 12:11 pm
#26, the article was about TV programs, PF Patrick Patterson, PG recruit Josh White, recruit Darius Miller, Shawn Finney, recruit Matt Walls, ticket prices, and finally Moses committment to OSU.
All 7 footers are projects when they are freshmen. They typically have poor coordination and are usually non-athletic.
Many reports state that UK fans are obsessed with UK BB without knowing much about the sport. I happen to think that most are more knowledgeable than typical BB fans as a whole. There are some exceptions, but not so many.
January 30th, 2007 at 12:16 pm
#28, I have heard that the previously undocumented rumor that an outside group had offered OTS a buyout has resurfaced. I have not heard anything about a new situation. Do you have anything in support or is this still in the unfounded rumor category?
January 30th, 2007 at 12:24 pm
I like Ramon Harris and I’m glad he’s on the team.
Had we gotten Moses, then we could have had AT worst a Moses/Pettigrew addition to our ‘07 class while taking our chances on Patterson and making a ride for Lucas (Pettigrew being odd-man out if we got both).
Now we are looking at Pettigrew and ?? to add if we whiff on Patterson and Lucas.
THAT’S why I am upset over the whole Moses fiasco. We had a good base from which to recruit from had we simply locked up Moses but now we have squat in the hand and two in the bush.
January 30th, 2007 at 12:38 pm
7ft dudes are basically extinct. You dont need them anymore unless they are ODen. Give me the 6′9-6′10 250lb dudes that can run, jump, rebound, blockshots and dunk on fools. I really hope that we dont have to try to make the 7ft guy work again after MW.
January 30th, 2007 at 1:12 pm
#’s 28 and 33, Tubby WILL NOT BE bought out by anyone, ignorance to even believe that! Why would people be upset w/a 16-5 team, rated in the top-25 and having a good season? New practice facility is open and you are in the thick of it for PPat and Jai Lucas, seems things are pretty good in all reality. The TUBBY BASHERS will say things are in disarray, but like Matt Jones pointed out things have already gotten better w/Finney helping w/recruiting.
January 30th, 2007 at 1:13 pm
NO WAY on this Earth Tubby is bought out by anyone. Much more loved and respected than many of you think!
January 30th, 2007 at 1:21 pm
It saddens men when a perfectly good post about “The Hills” gets
de-railed.
Talking points in addition to Matt’s:
1. Why does it seem that there is only one club in all of LA?
LC and Heidi go out and just happen to go to the same club arch
enemy Audrina is at.
2. What exactly did Audrina do to incur the wrath of Heidi? This
has never been explained and leaves me with the same feeling I
get when I watch “Lost”–ever more questions with a minute number
of answers.
3. Matt’s otherworldly fascination with the song, “Unwritten”.
If this song were a women, Matt thinks it would look like Brooke
Burke circa 2000.
4. The toolbox that is Spencer.
5. The fact that this season isn’t nearly as hairy without JWahl.
I would love to watch a conversation between him and Gore Vidal.
Since this was probably an interlude between repetitive posts about
Tubby Smith, I’ll get you started for the next post that follows mine:
Tubby Sucks
Tubby is Awesome.
Discuss.
January 30th, 2007 at 1:29 pm
Is “The Hills” the new “Beaches” or something? I’ve never seen so many Barbara Streisand fans fawning over a show before?
January 30th, 2007 at 1:41 pm
#36 How the hell has recruiting gotten better? Did we sign an elite prospect? How did I miss that one.
Things are not better and will not be better until we have signatures on the dotted line.
Anyone who is convinced that things have gotten better, just because that is what the word is,
is a complete freaking idiot. Have you not been paying attention the last several years? We are hearing
the same tired crap we always hear. We lead for this guy or that guy. When they sign elsewhere its
because we didn’t want them anyway. BS. Things will be better when Tubby is gone. How many wins do we have
over tournament bound, good teams? Take the cupcakes out and then look at the record. My points will be shown
at the end of the season and morons like yourself will kiss my butt.
January 30th, 2007 at 1:59 pm
Wins over tournament teams? 1.Indiana 2.UMass 3.Tennessee(with Loften)
January 30th, 2007 at 2:16 pm
That may be a list of one tournament team to go with 5 losses so far. Indiana will get in. UMAS is a big maybe. UT without Loften is not a tournament team. With him coming back they are not a guarentee to get in. They should because they have some nice wins but they need to pick it up in conference play. They need to be 7-9 in conference to get in and right now that means they have some work to make up.
Losses
UNC in
UCLA in
Memphis in
Vandy in
Georgia probably will get in
Wins
Indiana in
Depaul nope
Umass Maybe but they have some work to do.
UL I doubt it
UT probably but with Loften still hurt they could miss.
Other than Indiana there is not one game that we have won that makes me think we are anything above a top 25-35 team this year.
January 30th, 2007 at 2:21 pm
You can’t really count Tenn. Without Lofton they are not very good. They looked pretty bad Sunday.
January 30th, 2007 at 2:23 pm
And an tournament UL.(NIT)
January 30th, 2007 at 2:29 pm
I guess, looking at their schedule, odds are UL might end up being the third tournament we’ve beaten.
January 30th, 2007 at 2:54 pm
16-5 is a nice record if we would have beaten some decent teams. You can’t build a resume
by beating up on cupcakes. The first time we stepped back up in competition we lay an egg against
Vandy and then turn around and lay a bigger egg against Georgia. Tubby and this team need to quit
talking and get it done on the court. They have 9 chances to prove they are a top 20 club. We will
be waiting.

It is amazing how many people think they know better than
Tubby regarding Moses recruitment. Before they comment, they should learn all the e facts. If they don’t know all the facts, they should keep quiet and give some trust and support to Tubby’s program. More harm is done than good by assuming and speculating. UK basketball program is in good hands. We can not expect it to be on the same level as it was in Rupp’s time. The SEC is now much more competive, and there are many more good players these days than fifty years ago. As a result,in some years, some programs are and will be just as good or better as UK’s.
