Remember Darrin “Schoolboy” Van Horn?

by @ 6:00 pm. Filed under Blue Blooded Opinions

darrin

Tomorrow a native son of Lexington returns to coach the South Carolina Gamecocks against Kentucky in the same city where he led Tates Creek High School to the Sweet 16 nearly 20 years ago. His name of course is Darrin Horn….but everytime I hear his name, I think of another former Lexington, Kentucky native who made waves on the sports scene, former UK student, “The School Boy” Darrin Van Horn. Remember him? Van Horn for a short time put boxing in Kentucky on the map, gaining the IBF Middleweight title and having a host of fights that gained national attention. Back in the days when networks showed boxing matches for free, Van Horn fought on NBC, often in his home state, in fights that generated attention across the sports world.

Van Horn won the championship twice and finished his career with a 52-4 record. But he is often forgotten as a Kentucky sports legend. I remember watching Van Horn often as a kid and every time I hear the South Carolina coach mentioned, I wonder what the School Boy is doing now. Here is a video of one of his fights….(notice Van Horn’s sweet bowl cut!)

So, let me get this straight. He has a record of 52-4, he’s a
Kentucky legend, and all you can find is a video of him LOSING!
And he never even last half-way through the 2nd round! Geez!

  2. Section 137 Says:

Would have nice if you found a win. I guess the irony of it all if we knock out Van Horn tomorrow.

  3. Wildcat Rico Says:

Just having fun with you in #1 Matt. LOL!

  4. KYERIC Says:

Hmmm… I always thought another dude put boxing in Kentucky on the map. What’s his name?

  5. ChicagoBob Says:

    4) His momma called him Cassius Clay so I’m gonna call him Cassius Clay.

  6. Al Purnell here Says:

Darrin Horn (USC) = Dennis Felton (Georgia)

Not cut out for the bigtime(SEC)

  7. tyson Says:

darrin used to work with me, but is now down south working for either the atf or border patrol, i forget which. fun guy. and he DOES NOT like to get asked if he took too many shots to the head.

  8. BillyClyde4President Says:

Why show him losing??? What props are you giving to our KY boy??? I’ll play the role of Billy Clyde and say “This is a bad video.”

  9. BillyClyde4President Says:

Just kidding Matt, Horn got his arse handed to him in this video but it would have been nice to see him win. He used to be a trooper in Pikeville and quit because he shot his thumb off or something. I don’t know for sure what happened but I do know it was a firearm related accident.

  10. bballjoker Says:

I think this is a bad video. I’m not kidding. booooooooooooooo.

  11. tyson Says:

lol 9, no he didnt shoot his thumb off–a bullet went through the palm of his hand in a firearm related incident. he moved back to lexington shortly after that.

  12. snowprice Says:

BCG would say, “Why show the guy getting whipped? That’s just a bad question and a bad video. He is not Jodie Meeks. He’s a tough guy, but needs to improve defensively.”

  13. KYERIC Says:

C’mon Matt! Don’t be a Jeanine Edwards with the videos. You are upsetting us with it just being a bad video.

  14. StitchJonesSays Says:

    I could kick his ass!

  15. bigbluedude Says:

what a stupid azz video! you could have at least posted one he won!

  16. uktailg8er Says:

I do know he tried to get in a fight two years ago in the RV lot because some guy was telling people he had HIV. Also I think either he or his family were running a consignment store in Paris a few years back.

  17. _Blackhawk_ Says:

Dude was a bad man…he had a good pro record and fought 10 years as a pro. 59 fights as a pro and he turned pro just days after his 16th birthday. Not to mention he had 50 fights before a pro. Darrin took a ton of shots in by the time he was 26.

If the only video out there is of him losing then respect the man enough not to show it…..and we wonder why nobody mentions him as a legend even on this site he is disrespected.

  18. bfrey Says:

He’s trying MMA now. A little older, but a nice guy. Hung out with him at the tailgate this past year.

  19. LouisvilleFanCraig Says:

    the mods love me!

  20. mattcat68 Says:

Come on Matt, post the other three losses now!

  21. sortleader2 Says:

Is that Beisner’s lunch money he’s holding?

  22. Jaxalum Says:

I hung out with the Schoolboy for a little bit tailgating at Commonwealth this fall. As Mr. Frey said, he’s fooling around in MMA and trains in the same gym as Junie Browning from the Ultimate Fighter. Van Horn is very likeable and appreciated talking to a couple fight fans who appreciated a KY boy who won a world title.

  23. Carolina Blue is past tense for CAROLINA BLOWS Says:

PUT HIS ARSE ON KENTUCKY MT RUSHMORE. THE BEST FIGHTER TO EVER COME OUT OF THE STATE OF…..Uhhh, nevermind.

  24. AppyCat Says:

I remember watching him while in college. He was always the aggressor. He also had a pretty bad case of acne and after getting hit over and over the acne would start bleeding and make it look like he was getting hammered. The announcer would always comment about the ref possibly stopping the fight due to the bleeding. All my roommates loved watching this guy fight, one tough sumbitch. Go Cats!

  25. DevilDog Says:

Great job Matty… It appears you were more worried about finding good footage of his bowl cut (attempt to validate your’s???) then you were in finding video of a win… Great Job Matty, I hope you spend the night cold and alone. I know your used to one of those every night…

  26. ZW Says:

Didn’t Van Horn fight some dude in the parking lot of the Continental Inn? Seems like I remember watching it on CBS.

  27. uktailg8er Says:

    26) maybe CBS, but I thought it ABC. Either way it was a huge TV event.

Kentucky Mt Rushmore = Clay, Rupp, Secretariat and who?
