Picture it: Athens, Georgia, 2001. A young Jim Harrick Jr. impatiently taps his pen against his pants, waiting for his class of basketball players to finish their final exam. In just a few hours, he’d be in Las Vegas, hitting the blackjack tables and celebrating the end of another brutal semester. He couldn’t understand what was taking the players so long; he’d written the exam to be as easy as possible. Heck, even his neighbor’s seven-year-old was able to ace it…oh well, if all else fails, he’d give them A’s anyways.
Little did Jim Jr. know at the time that the final exam for his “Coaching Principles and Strategies of Basketball” class would be one of the things that ended up getting him fired. In 2004, the NCAA found Harrick Jr. and the Georgia basketball program guilty of academic fraud and improper benefits. Harrick Jr. reportedly gave all of the players–er, students–in his class A’s despite the easy final, and allowed them to miss class and tests at will. In fact, none of the program’s scholarship players even bothered to take the final. As a result, Jim Harrick Jr. was fired.

Misprint on the test. 68 teams. I work in standardized testing and that would be your head!
March 7th, 2013 at 4:14 pm
Number 11 is a trick question because there should be an “All of the Above” option.
March 7th, 2013 at 4:19 pm
10) The test was from 2001. There were not 68 teams yet.
March 7th, 2013 at 4:28 pm
Hmmm…reason states that if there were 64 teams in the tournament, then there are also 32, and 48, but not 65.

Love the Asian dude’s photobomb in the background…
March 7th, 2013 at 5:54 pm
This situation with Jim Harrick seems really similar to the UNC situation. How come UGA received penalties but UNC did not? (besides the obvious corruption of the NCAA… I’m curious as to how they justify this one)

March 7th, 2013 at 6:32 pm
Question #8 is a classic.
March 7th, 2013 at 6:48 pm
#16 my thought exactly! How is this any different? NCAA said UNC was an institutional issue. I completely forgot about this deal at GA. This makes the whole UNC issue even more of a fraud by the NCAA
March 7th, 2013 at 9:51 pm
i had trouble with question 8 and i forgot my circumference so my line wasn’t straight on number 16.
March 7th, 2013 at 11:13 pm
16 and 25–My guess is that the NCAA will say the difference is that in the GA case it was a coach teaching the class, thus it falls under their jurisdiction, where with UNC the coaches are “not involved.”
