After dropping 25 points on 11-17 shooting yesterday in Madison Central’s win over Wayne County in front of John Calipari and his clique, Dominique Hawkins acknowledged that Kentucky’s interest in him has picked up recently. The cousin of former UK player and current grad assistant Marquis Estill, Hawkins has scholarship offers from Western Kentucky, Morehead State, Tennessee Tech, and Valparaiso- but is quick to say that a scholarship offer from Kentucky would be a “dream,” according to Evan Daniels of Scout.com:
“It would be great,” Hawkins said when asked about a potential UK offer. “It’s been my dream school since I was a little kid in diapers. I was watching them on TV and cheering for them. I’m still a fan of Kentucky.”
It should be noted that Hawkins has said he would decline a walk-on position at any school, saying he’s “not interested in that.” Hawkins next plays on Friday at noon against James Bolden and Holmes High School of Convington.

do you think KSR could do ANOTHER story on this young man that says exactly the same thing that the previous six have said?
March 7th, 2013 at 1:35 pm
Update: Its Thursday
March 7th, 2013 at 1:37 pm
Kick Tracy Poston and Herbie Hood off and bring him in…
Not rocket science
March 7th, 2013 at 1:43 pm
Save those scholarships.
March 7th, 2013 at 1:45 pm
He’s not as good as jarrod polson. He has offers from morehead, teen. Tech, & western ky. He needs to go there instead of sitting on the bench. Coming to uk might help him get a job later. That’s about it.
March 7th, 2013 at 1:47 pm
Dream school, huh! But only if offered a scholly. Impressive list of schools there kid. I hear the OVC conference discussed all the time on ESPN.
March 7th, 2013 at 1:47 pm
This is yesterday’s news and has been posted on here at least three times c’mon
March 7th, 2013 at 1:50 pm
5 – not as good right now…where did Polson get scholly offers from? Liberty? Jon Hood needs to make like Mike Porter and graduate. Take the motivated in-state player with upside. Keep Polson – he’s earned it and will be very valuable.
March 7th, 2013 at 1:53 pm
if he is tougher than harrow, than i’ll take him now. how much worse can it get?
March 7th, 2013 at 1:57 pm
#8, liberty, Stetson, eku, Marshall, etc. You obviously didn’t see him play in HS. He was also ranked higher when he came out of HS. Hawkins is only 5’10. Why are saying all this?
March 7th, 2013 at 1:58 pm
he should reconsider walking on
March 7th, 2013 at 2:01 pm
Does anyone really feel comfortable about the game tonight? It is just unbelievable how this ship has sunk this year. We do not have any players, currently playing, that are being mentioned for any SEC honors and deservedly so. Cal has no chance for any “coach of the year” awards. In fact, if awards were given for worse coaching jobs of the year he would be dueling with Tony Barbour for that honor. I love the Calmeister and what he has done for our program, but he missed big time this year when he recruited talent but did not recruit, IQ, heart, pride, team etc. I can’t wait for the season to be over with our underwhelming play this year.
March 7th, 2013 at 2:17 pm
I’d imagine UK was only interested in him as a preferred walk-on.
March 7th, 2013 at 2:20 pm
i think its tony barbee
March 7th, 2013 at 2:20 pm
Dude may want to reconsider the preferred walkon possibility. UK basketball is in another orbit than those other schools offering the full rides.
March 7th, 2013 at 2:28 pm
Do we really want to starting collecting guards that are under 6 foot with a talent level that is only good enough to receive interest from schools that are way beneath us? Is it really worth a scholarship just say we have a player from KY? If we are the “Gold Standard and Best of the Best” why water down the roster.
March 7th, 2013 at 2:29 pm
Why waste a scholarship on a person who is not going to play well enough to be a contributor. There are plenty of guys who can walk on to help with practice.
March 7th, 2013 at 2:30 pm
Him coming to UK? LOL.
He can go to Morehead and have fun.
We don’t recruit players just for shits and giggles. We recruit talent. This guy isn’t our caliber.
STOP TALKING ABOUT HIM.
March 7th, 2013 at 2:34 pm
#10 Hawkins is every bit of 6’1. Pushing 6’2 with his length and vertical he plays like a 6’5 guy
March 7th, 2013 at 2:36 pm
He put up 28 on the Harrison twins and you all are saying he isnt talented. Learn what youre talking about.
March 7th, 2013 at 2:38 pm
39 inch vertical speaks for itself. He out scores both of the Hairrison twins
March 7th, 2013 at 2:38 pm
You all are quite ridiculous. You do realize at least 1 of Randle, Gordon, or Wiggins (all top 10) will be joining the best recruiting class ever? We ARE pulling a historic amount of talent. It will never get better than this class. It does not hurt us at all to take 1 in state guy with the the chance to be a decent role player in 3-4 years.
March 7th, 2013 at 2:38 pm
18. I don’t think you realize Hawkins scored 29 on the Harrison twins. He can really play. May not contribute year one, but in a couple years could be very well for the cats. Kid is a steal and is VERY underrated
March 7th, 2013 at 2:39 pm
wow you guy are all idiots do you remeber chris lofton im sure all you morons were saying the same thing then. He is no good we dont need him at uk he isnt our calibor. Look what he did not only did he have a good college career he spanked our asses when ever we played him. This dude is better than you all think can jump out of the gym. Archie and alex were rated high enough to be our “caliber” and look what there doing this year. Playing like a bunch of brainless hearless pussies.
March 7th, 2013 at 2:40 pm
heartless*
March 7th, 2013 at 2:40 pm
5. Oh? Not as good as Jarrod Polson? We’re talking about a kid who outscored our 2 best recruits combined in a game. Harrisons: 25 Hawkins: 29. A kid who outplayed Derek Willis all season long.
17 & 18. Commenters like you 2 are the reason Kentucky fans get such a bad rap nationally. You dont think this kid can play? Go pay 17 dollars and watch him play at Noon tomorrow at Rupp. You’ll be impressed. Stop passing judgement on the style of kids that built this program into what it is now. He is a 4 year guard with tremendous upside who shouldnt be slept on because hes undersized.
March 7th, 2013 at 2:43 pm
13 – Exactly. This to me is a non-story now that KSR finally posted his comment that he isn’t interested in a walk-on role anywhere. Good luck to this kid, but I’m not sure why we keep dwelling on it.
March 7th, 2013 at 2:44 pm
Domonique is well over 6ft probably around 6’1 3/4 to be exact. Wing span of about 6’6. Jarod polson couldn’t even hold his jock. He has a higher vertical than John wall. If you’re bashing him you have obviously not seen him play. If you have you’d be a believer. He trashed both the Harrison twins holdin the point guard to 12 points, when Dominique dropped 28 which was more than both of them combined. I can promise you as a 4 year player he would be lethal and start every game by his junior year.
March 7th, 2013 at 2:45 pm
Wow this comments section has spun outta control
March 7th, 2013 at 2:46 pm
one minute- a fan is saying the turnover/one and done hurts us….next we recruit top notch FOUR YEAR player and “he’s not good enough”…. are you serious? this kid could be another Darius Miller type….
March 7th, 2013 at 2:49 pm
I would love to have a team full of KY boys, reality is that wont get us banners. If Cal doesnt offer him many on here will throw a fit. If it comes down to numbers who do u take Hawkins over, that’s the question. And it’s easy,u don’t.
March 7th, 2013 at 2:50 pm
30 i agree its those people who make uk fans look bad. They mite as well just become iu fans as ignorant as they are.
March 7th, 2013 at 2:52 pm
D. Hawkins did not encounter much defense from Wayne Co. but Friday vs. Holmes will be different story. If he guards James Bolden it will be Hawkins strength and athletic ability vs. Bolden quickness and court sense/vision. This should be a treat if score remains close. Officiating may have much to do with that.
March 7th, 2013 at 2:52 pm
Hey d hawk is good. And a handsome young man
March 7th, 2013 at 2:52 pm
32 how does it come down to numbers when we lose the entire team every year to the nba, and obviously there isnt going to be a team full of ky boys but that doesnt mean we cant get good ones when we have the chance.
March 7th, 2013 at 2:55 pm
Are you all crazy? Dominque put up more points than Aaron and Andrew Harrison combined when Madison Central played Travis (TX). Kid is the real deal.
March 7th, 2013 at 2:55 pm
I’m laughing at some of you right now. Nique Hawkins is twice the player as Hood or Polson. The “recruiting experts” have missed on him. This kid is an Eric Bledsoe type athlete. Long, strong, athletic, excellent vertical, good shooter, and can defend. Central hasn’t played your typical Kentucky High School schedule, and he has competed at a high level against every team on the scedule, including the Twins. He will end up on this team.
March 7th, 2013 at 2:58 pm
Dominique Hawkins deserves a scholarship at the University of Kentucky more than any Kentucky player we’ve offered one to. Let that stir your grits. Best high school senior in the state right now. You tell me who’s better and ill tell you who’s a liar. Good basketball being played from them Madison central boys up at Rupp arena. If you don’t believe this kid can play, go check him out at noon on Friday like my man John Wemple said. MATT JONES I NEED AN INTERNSHIP. That is all.
March 7th, 2013 at 3:02 pm
Wow a lot of people on here are going to have trouble making sense of things when Cal offers Hawkins a scholarship. It is going to happen so you might as well start getting used to it. Doubt Cal would have invited him to practice yesterday afternoon if he was not serious.
March 7th, 2013 at 3:18 pm
Are you guys kidding me? He out played/out scores the Harrison twins and now he isn’t good enough? Come on BBN, just because he doesn’t have huge offers you don’t want him? How about those guys that ride the bench at UK? He is leading Madison Central towards a state championship. He may not be a starter at UK, but he could take his talents somewhere else where the fan appreciate him whether its EKU or Tennessee. Just stupid. I go to his rival school and say this. You all have obviously not watched him play.
March 7th, 2013 at 3:20 pm
PG from Lexington that BCG passed on ended up being a solid 4 year contributor at Butler
This kid needs a scholarship from UK.
Those of you bashing him need to get some glasses and/or get someone to explain to you about basketball ability
March 7th, 2013 at 3:22 pm
These comments can’t b serious!! What a bunch of idiots, u can always tell who knows basketball and who don’t
March 7th, 2013 at 3:23 pm
First of all lets make this clear
Since the summer of 2010, Hawkins has been the BEST player in the state of KY. From a state championship in 8th grade, to an AAU championship AS THE MVP of THA VIllE (Accompanied by Darrel Hicks and Omar Prewitt) as well as leading his team in scoring 4 years straight and leading them to an 11th region championship in recent days. From one year to the next he has only progressed and continues to remain as a top prospect. Why has he not been recruited? “Lack of size?”
6’2″ in shoes would currently make him the TALLEST guard on our roster, as well as the most athletic and pound for pound strongest.
Jarrod Polson experienced similar hype as he took his team to the state semi-finals as a senior.
Contrary to Polson, whom was in one of the weakest regions in the state, making him a 3 time region winner, the 11th region is the most competitive region in the state since the early 80′s with TWO teams in the region holding the record for state championships, as well as the largest number of collegiate athletes coming from said region (KHSAA.com. With this point, Dominque’s buzz has begun because of his region success as well as current state tournament success. Unfortunately for all of you Eastern Kentucky Coal Miners, whom rely on HIGHLIGHT films which project only positive plays of athletes, His intangibles have yet to be determined on a broad scale.
From a strictly basketball perspective: as a back-up #25 would immediately contribute to any line-up Calipari decided to utilize. His size may be his only minus, which I previously relayed he would be the biggest on this team, but 2 years from now, when the Harrison Twins commit to the NBA, who is going to run and teach the offense to any recruits that decide to attend UK?
Why has this team struggled this year? YOUTH
Why was last years team so dominate? Anthony Davis AND EXPERIENCE
Who runs and controls the game on every possession? THE POINT GUARD
When was the last time Calipari had a PG who had 4 years experience in his offense, to teach to recruits and organize the team? NEVER
With one scholarship available, should Cal recruit another 6’10″ forward? One that may not contribute immediately but “as size?”
I disagree.
It is self proven and obvious that Guards win Tournaments, and furthermore emulate a team’s identity and direction (See current season compared to previous seasons throughout college basketball)
3 things win games: Points, Assists, Rebounds
3 things also lose games: Bad Defense, Poor Free Throws, and Turnovers
Dominique Hawkins would increasingly improve our free throw shooting, as a career 80% shooter, but also turn down TO’s, as well as contribute heavily in the Rebound category from the PG position because of his athleticism and intelligence.
Hawkins to UK would not only be a terrific long-term asset, but an immediate asset to competition, efficient guard play, and depth.
#DhawkToUK
March 7th, 2013 at 3:34 pm
Hey #10 I know Hawkins personally and he is not 5’10 he is 6’1. Get your facts straight before saying random shit.
March 7th, 2013 at 3:40 pm
Possible added clause to his LOI:
If after 2 years, I receive a
Full scholarship Offer from UK,
I can transfer with the full approval of the school.
March 7th, 2013 at 3:45 pm
I am confused:
3 things win games: Points, Assists, Rebounds
3 things also lose games: Bad Defense, Poor Free Throws, and Turnovers.
If you fix the 3 things that lose games, do you win?
March 7th, 2013 at 3:48 pm
Fact is that the reason we are not performing the way we all want to this year is that we have no upper classmen so coach Cal is trying to Change up his recruiting a bit and throw in a couple kids that will be around for 3 maybe 4 years hell I love the 1 and done players capabilities but Idc who u r you can’t lose 4-5 players every year and expect to be a great team the following year u gotta have the Darius millers and Patrick pattersons of college ball who will stick around a graduate and a player who actually wants there degree to help them after basketball is over but that’s just my opinion I hope they Continue to recruit the kid and he could be like jarrod and get a scholarship after a year or 2 but anyways GO CATS….
Beat Georgia……..
March 7th, 2013 at 3:58 pm
I’d love to have this kid on the roster
March 7th, 2013 at 3:58 pm
This is the kind of players we need. Guys that love UK and dream of playing here. As we’ve seen this season heart and desire trump talent at the college level. Guys like this take pride in wearing that jersey and will give 100% every minute they get in.
March 7th, 2013 at 4:09 pm
I am embarrassed that UK “fans” are on here trashing a kid who they’ve probably never met in person before. Granted, I haven’t either, but let’s get the facts straight here about Hawkins.
He can play. His best games are against the best competition (Harrison twins, Derek Willis, etc.).
Regardless of what school he goes to, he’s going to be good there.
If he goes to a school that UK plays and he drops 30+ (Lofton) then EVERY SINGLE ONE OF YOU will be bitching about why we didn’t offer him a scholarship.
The kid has talent. He can play at UK.
Now, every one of you sit back in your couch or chair and keep being butthurt about not making your high school basketball team and thing you know everything about the game. You are an embarrassment to Big Blue Nation.
March 7th, 2013 at 4:26 pm
Archie is taller :dealwithit:
March 7th, 2013 at 4:37 pm
This is nothing against Hawkins, but I hope we don’t have a scholarship left for him since that would mean that we picked up at least 2 of the “big three” recruits and some of the current players stay for next year. If we have a scholarship get this kid- he’s a solid player and from KY.
March 7th, 2013 at 4:44 pm
The kid can play. He also knows about the tradition/legacy of UK basketball, since he has grown up watching UK basketball. Many of the players coming into the program recently have no concept of what it means when we say ‘We Bleed Blue’. This kid does. Also, like previous posts state, he will spend a FULL college career here. What we lack this year is heart and experience. I think he would be a great addition not only to next year’s roster, but for the program over 4 years. A talented player, with heart, learning (and teaching) Cal’s system for 4 years? Yes, please. #BBN
March 7th, 2013 at 4:58 pm
Well the next great Ky player like carrier stockton etc remember? so lets give this player a scolly who wouldnt take him over Wiggins Randle or Gordon or Mudiay Tyus Jones from the junior class bring back BCG his type players would be NCAA Champion !!!!!
March 7th, 2013 at 5:43 pm
Whatever gets you ritz through this. You poor people are ………
March 7th, 2013 at 6:34 pm
Tell Malone and company to start packing their bags – schollies should not be wasted even if it makes you feel good
March 8th, 2013 at 3:02 pm
I dropped 31 today in front Cal…oh and I grabbed 12 boards.
