Willie Cauley-Stein has a big chance to showcase his defensive skills tonight against Georgia’s Kentavious Caldwell-Pope. Caldwell-Pope is averaging 18 points and 6.9 rebounds per game and has led Georgia in scoring in every game but three. According to Jerry Tipton, he’s the only player in the SEC to score 10 or more points in every game. The good news is that he’s Georgia’s only player averaging in double figures, and you don’t have to stop him or shut him down in order to win, but it’ll go a long way if Kentucky can contain him to 16 points or less.
Georgia is 1-5 in SEC play when Caldwell-Pope scores only 16 points or less. When he scores 17 points or more, Georgia is 7-3 in SEC play.
When Caldwell-Pope is held to 16 points or less (1-5):
LOSS at Florida
LOSS vs. Miss. State
LOSS at Missouri
LOSS vs. Florida
WIN vs. Texas A&M
LOSS at Arkansas
When Caldwell-Pope scores 17 points or more (7-3):
WIN vs. LSU
WIN at Texas A&M
WIN vs. Auburn
WIN at South Carolina
WIN at Tennessee
LOSS vs. Alabama
LOSS at Ole Miss
WIN vs. South Carolina
LOSS at Vanderbilt
WIN vs. Tennessee
It’s not brain surgery. The Cats’ mission tonight will be to contain Kentavious Caldwell-Pope.

What does Cauley-Stein have to do with defending Pope?
March 7th, 2013 at 12:09 pm
Pope’s numbers are a little misleading. He averages a lot of points, but he takes a lot of shots to get there. He has taken nearly 400 shots this season. No other player for GA has taken over 200.

Alex and Archie are really our only two players with the ability to “stop, contain or slow down” the opposing teams best players. Alex is often just to big to guard a 6’5″ and under guy, because he reaches and gets terrible touch fouls. Archie just doesn’t have the defensive pride that Liggins, MKG, or even Jorts had. Nerlens had it, and Willie does his best…. Caldwell Pope goes for 30 on us unfortunately.

I also wish that Cal would make it a priority to slow the opposing teams best player- ala Pitino at Kentucky. I had rather everybody score 11 pts, than have a guy go for 40 on us, ever.

UGA’s 2nd leading scorer averages 7 pts LOL. If we can’t beat these scrubs we don’t even deserve an NIT invite.

I’m pretty sure Cal has had great defense while at UK. This team just lack great perimeter defenders which has allowed players to go off on us.

jay Bilas on Colin Cowherd right now giving props to UK FAN and NASA Engineer Darrell Woods – i don’t know you Darrell, but you are repping Big Blue Nation well!
Great story about teamwork and philosophy that goes beyond basketball. KSR, you should look this dude up.

Anyone else expecting a 10+ point loss tonight? I love UK, but this team has no heart…

For this group it is like brain surgery.

Overslept and just realized I’m wearing a reddish dress shirt at work today… #WTFmoment

Wait…Georgia lost at home…to MISS. STATE ??? If we don’t beat them by at least 15, I don’t care if we beat Florida or not, we don’t deserve an NCAA bid. If we LOSE to Georgia, and then send Julius and Jarrod out with a loss to Florida, we don’t even deserve an NIT bid.

Better than average odds that one or two GA players not named Pope have career nights tonight. That’s just the way it seems to fall for us.

What happens in Pope goes for 40 tonight? Can we shut down the rest of the Dawgs?
March 7th, 2013 at 1:43 pm
WCS better not be guarding KTP ?
