The top-paid college basketball coach resides right here in the Bluegrass at the University of Kentucky. His earning comes without hesitation or debate. After all, he took hold of a program that was all but destroyed by the former regime and immediately turned it into a winner. There isn’t much Big Blue Nation wouldn’t give for that to have happened. His achievements are extensive, posting a .841 winning percentage in his time at Kentucky, along with an Elite Eight, a Final Four, and a National Title to boot.
His incomparable success prompted a 2011 contract extension that provides a hefty $3.8 million per year, with a $1 million supplement in bonuses for each year he remains at the helm, with the exception of 2015 and 2018.
But that’s just the start. A slew of performance bonuses are built into his contract – just like new football head coach Mark Stoops received in his deal that rewards him for winning – that pays Calipari up to $850,000 in added income each season.
Obviously last season Calipari cashed in on just about all of those items after winning a title, earning $4.6 million from the University, and $700,000 in bonuses. The deep run in March combined with the banner earned Calipari $5.3 million.
Already with nine losses, tying the 2010-11 Kentucky campaign for total losses; barring an unprecedented run through March where the Cats win it all, this will be Calipari’s worst team based on win-loss record since his 2004 Memphis team went 22-16.
And that means mucho menos denero.
Translation: much less money.
With Kentucky bouncing around on the tournament bubble, Calipari’s income may come back down to earth – as if you can call a $3.8 million salary normal.

Think we should take up a collection for him ?
March 5th, 2013 at 5:13 pm
Cut back on a few things and he’ll be OK.
March 5th, 2013 at 5:21 pm
I feel so sorry for him. How will he ever make it?
March 5th, 2013 at 5:21 pm
#1 – If you win the national championship does that mean you went to the final four?
March 5th, 2013 at 5:23 pm

Missing out on the tourney should cost Cal alright….his JOB.
March 5th, 2013 at 5:42 pm
Good, I love Cal, but if his teams are a garbage product, he deserves a 2 million dollar pay-cut.
March 5th, 2013 at 5:45 pm
Coach Cal is under paid, should be the 6 Million dollar man!
March 5th, 2013 at 5:46 pm
That’s right UK Freshmen! We agree.
March 5th, 2013 at 5:51 pm
Cal;
Money?
We don’t need NO stinking Money.
but, I will take what I earned so I can spread it else where.
March 5th, 2013 at 5:53 pm
If you actually think he should be fired you are a moron.
March 5th, 2013 at 5:54 pm
You know, this team really isn’t so different at all from a Final Four team two years ago that had 6 conference losses and didn’t look so great through much of the conference schedule.
March 5th, 2013 at 5:58 pm
UK Freshmen + Old School = Stupidity
March 5th, 2013 at 5:58 pm
16… there is one big difference. We had Brandon Knight at the point two years ago.
March 5th, 2013 at 6:03 pm
16…by this time of the season in ’10-’11 that team had already shown they were righting the ship. Also, basically all of that teams conference losses were 4 points or less, in a stronger SEC as well.
March 5th, 2013 at 6:16 pm
Cal doesn’t give shit about the money but the losing is chapping his ass.
March 5th, 2013 at 7:53 pm
Dinero.
March 5th, 2013 at 8:51 pm
hey UK Freshmen, you want some candy? Get in the van!
March 6th, 2013 at 1:53 am
And then after next season? It will be right back up, but I don’t doubt UK will still make the tournament. With a year like this? With every top team losing left and right? Yeah, the NCAA will throw UK in the tournament, they have 20 wins and still pending for more, that’s good enough for the NCAA.
