The best buzzer-beater you’ll see all day…

by @ 7:15 pm. Filed under Blue Blooded Opinions

Basketball is nothing without drama. One New York high school basketball title was won on Saturday in dramatic fashion, as New Rochelle shocked Mt. Vernon 61-60 on a half-court shot at the buzzer. Mt. Vernon was in-bounding the ball with 2.9 seconds remaining. Mt. Vernon tried to heave the ball down the court to bleed out the clock. New Rochelle intercepted the pass and then senior Khalil Edney threw the ball from half-court, nailing the shot as time expired.

Nice job, they have already taken the video down!

  2. PC Says:

    Nice Apple

  3. replay Says:

clearly did not get the shot off in time.

  4. KYStout Says:

New Rochelle was in-bounding, not Mt. Vernon.

  5. look closely Says:

    3) look a little closer. he clearly did get the shot off in time. there is space between the ball and his hand with 0.1 seconds on the clock. that means ITS GOOD!!!!!!!!!!!! i love how both teams celebrated when the clock expired. MT Vernon player was pulling a Marshall Henderson by flashing his jersey…sucks both for both of them.

  6. Sam Says:

Ally, please correct your error. I was confused for a few minutes based on your error. Like 4) said, it was New Rochelle in bounding, not the white team. The guy who threw it in came in to steal it and make the shot!

  7. KYStout Says:

And yes, he did get the shot off in time.

  8. sparky Says:

Watching in slomo. Clearly did not get the shot off in time.

  9. Sam Says:

And it wasn’t a half court shot, but closer to a 3/4 court shot.

What was the one ref doing covering his head. It was like he was protecting himself from a punch or maybe hiding his face in shame. I don’t know. Weird reaction.

  10. BADIDEATSHIRTS Says:

3 & 8 seriously? do you guys know anything about basketball? if the ball leaves the hand before time expires it counts and there was space between the ball/hand with .1 seconds.

  11. Zulmagi Says:

3:11 clearly shows it was out of his hand. GG

  12. BOONE'SBUTCHERSHOP Says:

What has been the most memorable moment in Kentucky Basketball so far this season? I have been thinking about this all day….

  13. Hal Says:

love that the announcers pause the slow-mo and say “the ball’s clearly out of the kid’s hand with .1 left” yet the clock above the basket is at 0.0 & the red light has already gone off. high skool b-ball..

  14. ACD Says:

5 and 10 – Don’t go by the clock that is broadcast in the corner of the TV screen, go by the light on the backboard. Looks like he didn’t get it off before the backboard lit up.

  15. what do i know?... Says:

the backboard lights are the official marker for these shots I think. Looks like they came on before the ball was loose.

  16. WWMKGD? Says:

Going by the clock above the basket hitting 0.0 and the backboard lighting up, the ball is just off (or on) his finger tips. Tough call even if the Refs had replay. Love how the Ref sprints off the court after the call.

  17. Jason Says:

The clock on the screen and the clock above the basket were not in sync. It looks like the lights on the backboard go off before it is out of his hand. Can’t really tell from the video, but I don’t think it counts.

  18. Steady Says:

    It’s LOOSE!

  19. Dexter Says:

ball clearly left his hand after the clock expired, awesome shot though

  20. Costa Rica Says:

The kid that made the winning shot was also the QB on the state championship team… interesting trivia.

  21. fireants25 Says:

    thats insane!

  22. UKAlum Says:

16- Every referee from elementary school to NBA are trained to leave the court as fast as they can after every game. It is for their safety.

  23. OldGuyWithABetterStory Says:

Anyone remember former UK player Paul Andrews? Hit a shot from half court to win the KY HS tourney for Laurel County in Rupp in 1983 after intercepting a pass. Much bigger deal than this.

  24. The Rifleman Says:

The clock insert on the screen is 0.1 seconds behind the one on the goals. I think it probably is still in his hand or just barely leaving when the clock on the goals hits 0.0 and the red light comes on. Close call but if reviewed at the college level, I doubt it would have been ruled good.

  25. boyd279 Says:

Bottom line is it counts, no matter what any replay may or may not show now…game over!

  26. damn... Says:

wow… what a big call for those refs… who knows… maybe sportscenter can figure out if it really shouldve counted… obviously nothing can be changed but i still kinda want to know if he didnt get it off

  27. Leggo Says:

Wow… High School State championship game in front 600 people, just lets you know the diffence in New York and Kentucky.

  28. Mike Says:

Ally, did you even watch the video? New Rochelle in-bounded the ball, it was stolen by a Mt Vernon player, and then New Rochelle was able to steal the ball back and heave a prayer just as time expired, and as we all know, that prayer was answered. Your incorrect description of the play just really confuses what was an already confusing play to begin with.
