Some of my greatest childhood memories are going to the SEC tournament every March. I got to spend time with my family during these trips and I also saw a lot of great games. One of the greatest games I’ve ever attended was the UK-Arkansas SEC Tournament Final in the Georgia Dome in 1995.
I remember sitting about 10 rows up in the endzone. They were the best seats I’d ever had at a game and I was excited. Much to my dismay, Kentucky fell down 19 points in the first half to the Razorbacks. “Pig Souie” echoed throughout the massive building and Nolan Richardson’s strutted up and down the sidelines in his snakeskin boots. Slowly the tides turned, however, and the Cats stormed back in the second half. Rodrick Rhodes found himself at the line with a chance to give Kentucky the win. He missed and the game went into overtime. In overtime the Cats quickly found themselves down 7 points and a victory looked highly unlikely. But just like in regulation they fought back and cut the deficit to three. That’s where this video picks up. Some highlights to look for:
*The skinniness of Antoine Walker.
*The volume of the crowd.
*The UK uniforms.
*Corliss Williamson making himself at home on the sidelines.
*One of my favorite UK players ever, Anthony Epps, coming up clutch in a huge situation.
*Young Rick Pitino.
*Even younger Dave “Buzz” Baker.
I hope everyone has a safe and snow filled weekend. I’m looking forward to welcoming you all to Nashville in approximately 12 days. Go Cats.

What a great game – and Epps had some major arc on those free throws!
thanks for posting.

One of the best things about that game was how evenly spread out the classes of the players was. That was a team of seniors juniors sophs and freshmen.

That was a great game. That team should have won the title (Pitino’s dumb gambit against Rasheed Wallace ended that). Corliss was almost as fun as Charles Barkley crying on the floor of Rupp.

Those were the days peeps. I remember that game like it was yesterday. UK hoops was on top of the world from 92-98 (with the exception of a down 94). Special times in deed. That ARkansas rivalry was INTENSE. I miss that.

This team should’ve made the final 4 also. They got screwed in the UNC game by the refs.

Thank you Aaron for posting that video and that picture.

#15, that and the fact that Rhodes panicked and went to the 3-ball.

Man that took me back! What a game! Bittersweet for poor rodrick Rhodes. He knew he almost cost us the game & then transferred. His first six games as a freshman he was An unbelieavable player. Rick told him it was mashburns team & he was never the same. Ruining rodrick & not guarding the ball against duke were the only two mistakes I can remember Rick making as coach here. Like him or not, those were some incredible teams and times & he was an awesome coach!

Come to think of it, that game against UNC in 95 was similar to the game against UConn in 2011. Both times our outside shooting doomed us. However, both of these were followed up by monster seasons the next year.
14, Maybe this year will turn out to be Cal’s 1994. It’s fun to look back to those days, but we have a lot of fun days ahead as well. I’m just enjoying the ride!

Concurrently.
I miss the days when Arkansas was relevant, intimidating even; however they can wait till after tomorrow to mount their comeback to prominence.

#21,Rhodes missed free throws at the end of regulation that he thought had cost us the game when we went down by seven in overtime. I really felt bad for him toward the end of that game. He was really grateful to his teammates when they fought back and won. That was an awesome game!

Is it just me, or do today’s college basketball players care less about winning and losing? This was a conference title game, yet, judging by the players’ reactions, you would have thought it was the national championship game. I simply do not see the same passion with today’s players, last year’s national championship team the exception of course.

I was at this game and what an exciting game. After UK won, there were people running up and down the corridors. Will never forget this game.

Awesome game between two very strong teams.
Pitino was a little early in his celebration….some things never change.
