You can count Scott Gleeson of USA Today among those who feel that the Cats have all but assured their spot among the field of 68. In his latest post for HOOPSWORLD, Gleeson puts last night’s win over Mizzou at the three spot among his four biggest takeaways from yesterday’s college basketball slate. Of particular note? Not only does he think our resume is now tournament-worthy on paper, but he seems to agree that we’ve finally got the statement win we’ve been searching for all year. See for yourself:
3. Kentucky’s resurgence: The antidote for losing by 30 points against a team you had no business to losing to in the first place? John Calipari’s dodgeball and Wiffle Ball pregame routines did the trick. The Wildcats kept their NCAA tournament hopes alive with a resume-boosting 90-83 win in overtime over a Missouri team that just toppled SEC Goliath Florida. So much for a one bid league, eh? Kentucky’s resume (19-8, 10-4) as it stands is enough to get into the Dance, but winning against a top-50 team without Nerlens Noel was the biggest gain from Saturday. Perhaps this crochet is next up on Calipari’s weird games agenda.
Now, I assume he means croquet, not crochet… But if some team-oriented yarn knitting gets us to the tournament, I’d be down with that too.

Being on the fence at this point means you can find some who say we are in and some who say we ain’t. Too early still and lets just play the remaining games to find out.

why did Jodie Meeks leave with Cal coming? We could have won it all- NOT DUKE. To me that season hurt worse than 1992.

Meeks would have gone higher in the draft the next year given what UK would have done – it was only missing a three point shooter from being considered one of the great teams ever. After how badly Gillispie abused him – he was jealous of him I gather – I’m not surprised he wanted to get out no matter what. And he’s done all right.
Cal canceled the whiffle ball by the way. And UK has no bad losses (Tennessee may make the tournament and you know Nerlens was the heart of the team, so it was more emotion than anything, they were numb). While that may not be item #1 on their resume, it would be a tie-breaker with other teams.

PS This team is tougher than the ’11 team was at this point – now they took off the last three weeks before the tournament, and that’s yet to be seen, but they have more potential even without Nerlens than ’11 did and it’s a similar year with no great teams.

2) Oh & it didn’t hurt as much as ’92 for me. There was no miracle turn around 2.1 second shot by anyone in OT. To each his own, but not sure anyUK fan could or will ever get that sting out of them.

The ’95 loss to NC is the most sting to me – Pitino’s stupid attempt to get Rasheed Wallace tossed because he didn’t think he would win. UK had the better team and the best team in the country. Tossed away a championship.
Allow me to be optimistic – UK should win the next three and should beat Florida at home. Alabama plays at Florida and at Ole Miss and should lose both. This leaves UK as sole #2 (and it’s not inconceivable that Florida could lose another game and to UK and the conference champ be a tie). UK not only would be in the game but the seeding would jump and might avoid a terrible second round game – Indiana, which would be very stoked and might be the only team UK probably can’t beat without some kind of seismic event.

10– John, yes ouch indeed and remember it well. For me, it was the 1984 Final Four and we could not hit the broad sign of a barn in the second half after leading Georgetown at halftime. That still haunts me as we should have hung another banner with one game to go vs Houston.

How could a second place finish in SEC NOT be invited?????????? Whether or not UK gets in is ludicrous!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! We WILL be invited period. Such talk is outrageeous and only a UK bias by NCAA (which we know is there) will keep us out. Write it down now!!!!!!!!!!!!
