3) If it wasn’t for the highly lucrative Athletics Department at UK that actually gives back to the University and helps pay for Campus improvements, your tuition would probably be going up 20-24% a year. Deal with it.

#4 Got a job. Work 25-30 hours a week and take 17 hours of classes. Curious when you got out of college. Did you know tuition has gone up over 100% over the last 8 years at UK? Maybe your mommy and daddy were rich and helped you. I don’t have that luxury.
#5 oh yes, the UKAA gave $1 million back to the university last year I think. You don’t have a clue, just admit it. $1 Million is nothing. If the “highly lucrative” UKAA is so full of wealth, then why did they have to get this funding? What a joke. Look at the link below. UKAA contributed a whopping 1.5 Million back to the university’s general fund in 2009-10. LOL, your math skills suck. That is a drop in the bucket and probably made tuition increases 12% that year instead of 12.0001%.

#3- Tuition will NOT increase as a result of this bill. This clause was an addition to the bill during the political process and mentioned on this site SEVERAL times. I wish people would properly inform themselves before blindly commenting…

#11 I didn’t say that. I just think its sad that a bill like that can be passed for this purpose, while funding for higher education gets cut dramatically and UK hikes tuition. Its semantics. Of course it won’t raise tuition, but what is better for this state? Investing $$ in educating people or building a big new jumbotron and adding chairbacks and luxury suites. Hi Starving Student,
I’m 36. I have a wife and two teenage children. I am also a full time college student. I also work. My tuition also increases every year. College is an individual choice you make my boy. Like Kentucky basketball, it’s not for everyone. It sounds like you are a bit jaded by the expense of the education YOU are CHOOSING to pursue and pay for. That’s on you. UKAA is gracious in what they do give back to the University of Kentucky. Go find me other major sports programs that do that. If it makes you feel better, I’ll make you a bologna sandwich.

Starving Student – I agree $1 million is a drop in the bucket. What would you suggest they do? Would you rather the Athletics department just give the University $100 million straight up to the University so your tuition can drop by about $2800 for one year? Yeah that makes sense. You my friend need to get a clue on how the real world works. The athletics department is funding the renovation completely on it it’s own without taking a DIME from the University, all the while contributing to the funding new construction projects on campus that have ABSOLUTELY nothing to do with Athletics.
And you need to understand exactly what the bill is for. It’s not for funding. It’s for BONDING… BIG DIFFERENCE THERE JUNIOR. Why don’t you google what “bonding” is and get back down off your soapbox. They do have the funding and ARE PAYING FOR THIS. My Math skills may suck, but it’s not nearly as bad as your comprehension skills. I fear for the future of our country.

#19 What year? Anything prior to 2002 or so then you have no argument. Inflation runs about 1-2% per year. Tuition up 12-14% per year over the last 10 years at least. Full time tuition is over $11,000 or so at state U’s in KY. In case you can’t read, I posted earlier that I work too. 25-30 hours per week with a full class load. I’m not just whining, just saying that something is wrong when students have to do this, but due to massive cuts in higher education funding by the state, will still come out of school with debt approaching 6 figures. So maybe priorities are a little skewed by this state’s government? ya think?

15 I’m defending it and yes, I graduated from UK. Saying we “could care less about the burden of paying for an education” means that we actually care some. Perhaps you meant “couldn’t care less…” My point: it’s ironic that you want to call us ignorant or imply we are stupid and didn’t go to college, but yet sound ignorant when you use sayings improperly.

The money for this project is coming from loans though, isn’t it? I thought this bill was in essence just asking for permission. I didn’t think it would have any effect on tuition anyway since the athletics expenses are separate from general expenses. It isn’t like they are choosing to support athletics instead. They are simply granting permission for bonding.
And they are also building a new Arts and Sciences building and Chem Phys building, right? Everyone wins. Tuition, like gas prices, isn’t going to lower. It just won’t raise thanks to this bill.
You could have worked harder in high school and earned a full tuition scholarship. I did.

#21 you miss the point entirely. Talk about comprehension issues. I did not imply this bill makes tuition go up or it passed at the expense of student tuition. I am simply saying look how easy it is for athletics to get support to raise money for facilities improvement. Gotta keep up with the Joneses right? Now when higher education funding is continually cut in Frankfort, and students from all state schools rally to protest and beg for alternatives, or relief, then it barely merits any mention and nothing gets done. My comments on here are simply pointing out that priorities are WAY misplaced. If creative funding, bond issues can be done to build buildings and to renovate a dam football field, then why can’t that momentum be used to make education more affordable for the future of this state? If you guys can’t see that, then it is simply evidence of the heart of the problem.

#32 are you really that clueless? Tuition cost is based on class hours! More classes taken = higher tuition that period. How do you take more classes when you are already taking 17 hours and work 30 hours a week. Yeah, I guess sleeping 3 hours a day would do it.

I think we as taxpayers all OWE starving student lower tuition rates. We should probably forgive all his student loans too since we don’t pay a single dime towards post secon…(what’s that? we do?) Oh, well, in that case, pay for your own damn college degree. You act like you’re the first student to have tuition increase. Guess what? EVERY SINGLE STUDENT THAT HAS EVER BEEN TO COLLEGE HAS SEEN TUITION RATES RISE. You know what else goes up in price every year? EVERYTHING! You can’t buy a loaf of bread for dime anymore either and it’s got nothing to do with renovations to the football stadium.

Starving student- I just graduated uk in 2010. I worked 25-30 hrs a week and took a full class load and graduated in four years with a 3.5 GPA. I am in no way bragging, it should be expected. Students today think they should be applauded just for going to college. If you dont have the work ethic to cut it in college and handle your debts once you get a job, there are a few janitor positions available.
My tuition went up every year i went to school. The cost of living increases every year. Deal with it or go live in a 3rd world country. Stop blaming “the system” and complaining when something you dont agree with gets funding. UK athletics gives tons of money back to the university, keeping tuition from going up more than it already is. They are smart to invest in the entity that brings in that much $$

@ Starving Student – I graduated from UK in ’08, I saw the same double digit percentage hikes every year, and I still support this. It has nothing to do with the football team needing new facilities, and a lot more to do with UK having fallen behind most major universities in facilities campus-wide. The last time I was around campus, I noticed about 10 new buildings just since I graduated, and tuition paid for most of them since state government has spent so much more on other programs instead of university-level education (including K-12 education). Even with the significant tuition hikes of the last decade, UK is still a bargain compared to most major universities. Ask any of your classmates from Ohio about OSU’s in-state tuition vs UK’s out-of-state cost.
If you didn’t want to pay for your college education, you should have gone to Berea.

Again, there will be on campus renovations as well. I forget the entire list, but it was on here a while ago. You are mad that it is easier to get athletic funding than academic? If it isn’t going to affect your tuition why are you complaining? Sounds like you just want tuition to be lowered. It won’t be, and no new football stadium will change that. Since it isn’t an either/or situation, there isn’t anything to complain about. Academic funding will either happen or not happen anyway. This renovation is unrelated to tuition.
If I am misunderstanding you, maybe it is due to your poor communication skills. You are certainly implying that your tuition costs are related to the football stadium.

And maybe in community college you pay by credit hour, but not at UK. I always looked at my financials before my scholarship went through, and 12 credit hours was no less than 15. Once you are full time you can take all the hours you care to, up to 20-something. Part time is by credit.

Roland and Julia, I graduated from Savannah College of Art and Design in 2005. I was both Part-time and Full-time. Either way you pay for the credit hour. No difference in that. You take 1 class, you pay for 1. You take 6 classes you pay for 6. I can’t speak for UK today, but my guess is it’s like that there also. Can’t imagine it not being that way.

Sorry, starving student, but this renovation bill and higher education funding bills have absolutely nothing to do with each other. This bill was to allow UKAA to issue bonds ITSELF. You obviously aren’t in business school or you would understand that that means they are self-funding the entire project, i.e. the state/taxpayers aren’t responsible.
And for your 2nd lesson, state governments must pass balanced budgets, unlike the federal government, so when times are tough, higher education gets cut. That’s life.

#52 UKAA gives “tons of money” back to the university? I found data for 2009-10. UK gave 2.4% of its $76,500,000 budger back to the general fund. UK has what, about 26,000 students? So even if you (falsely) assume that 100% of that amount goes right to defraying tuition costs, then that would equate to about $70 per student. That is not much. And of course very little of that amount is going to Joe Student’s tuition obligation.

Realmath – So now you’re arguing semantics about what “tons of money” means? It’s amazing they give anything back to the University. Considering part of that budget is paying tuition for student athletes. Paying for Books for student athletes. Paying for room and board for student athletes. Scholarships are paid for out of that budget. UK is one of the few major athletics program that gives anything back to the school, let alone $$$ in the 7 digit neighborhood. Yet people will still complain and bitch about how much of THEIR OWN MONEY THAT THEIR SPENDING. I suppose the athletics department should just give all of their money back to University in lieu of paying Coaches, paying scholarships, etc… But then the Athletic Department would cease to exist. Hundreds of people would lose their jobs. Then there would be no SEC money coming in, because there would be no sports. Oh well at least you couldn’t bitch about how the UKAA is spending their own money to upgrade the pressbox. All would be well with the world then… Unbelievable, good grief people, get a clue.

It is not important that I might have known what I was talking about,
what is important is that “Starving student: can reduce her tuition costs by Working harder for her degree.
example:
If a student goes for 12 hour load = full time, it costs them $404 per credit hour.
If a student goes for 18 hour load = it costs them $269 per credit.
That’s what I said in my original comment.

68- UK athletics is paying 2/3 of a 100 million dollar STUDENT building. 66 Million dollars. Is that not quantified as “tons” of money to you? Im sure no students will use that.
Either way, what does UKAA have to do with the cost of tuition at uk? This bill is going to help build and fund many facilities around the state, not just at UK. People never cease to amaze me. UK athletics could cure cancer and some moron would find a way to cut them down. These are the same people that didnt make their high school football team and are still pissed about it.
