Former Kentucky offensive line coach Mike Summers has landed a new job out in sunny California. Summers will join Lane Kiffin’s staff at USC, where another former UK coach,Tee Martin, coaches the wide receivers.
Summers was hired by his good friend Bobby Petrino at Western Kentucky just last month, but he’s trading in the Corvette museum and Fruit of the Loom factory for a life in Los Angeles. Not a bad move.
A lot of folks, including current and former Wildcats, were hoping Mark Stoops would keep Summers around in Lexington. Larry Warford called him the best offensive line coach in the nation, and Warford isn’t the only person who believes that. Summers is loved and respected by all who have worked for and with him.

Good for him. But we will be good. New staff, new direction. Different O-line philosophy. #WEAREUK

He may be a great offensive line coach and person, but I for one am happy that Stoops completely removed every person connected to that losing mentality and demeanor that surrounded the program. Coach Cal will do the same with his current bunch of pussies after the NIT.

I’m sure he’s a great guy and a good coach. But I am so happy that we cleaned house with the previous staff. I wish him well and am happy we can move forward

Kiffin trying to assemble the old UK staff on his team. Look for Joker to be off. cord next year..
February 20th, 2013 at 10:30 am
I too was hoping he would stick with UK but I don’t know why. We sucked in every phase of the game including O line.

If you wanna work for Petrino and Kiffin, then by all means have at it. Speaks to the guy’s character. Says something about Joker too.

Joe Hall ain’t happy his grandkids are moving so far away.

Probably not as respected by the people who spent the last month expecting him to stay at WKU.

If he worked for joker he is a loser. Maybe lets support the guy thats given us the best recruiting class in history over a guy that was coach on one of the worst teams in history.

Kiffin defiantly going to get fired & when I say defiantly I mean defiantly at USC; anyone joining his staff would have to be nuts. If someone like Summers is the best Lane can get to come to USC along with the number of recruits that decommitted, everyone already knows what’s coming. Lane own Dad got out of USC before the hammer falls. If Tee was smart, he would already have feelers out for a new position somewhere else.

#6 You don’t know Coach Summers so don’t speak of his character, if you knew him you would NEVER MAKE SUCH A HORRIFIC STATEMENT. Coach Summers character is unmatched. Don’t speak of a persons character unless you know them first hand. Totally uncalled for.

#10) defiantly going to get fired? And when you say defiantly, you mean defiantly at USC? Are you sure that’s what you mean? I think maybe you mean definitely but I could be wrong. Maybe you do mean he’s going to boldly resist being fired but that doesn’t make much sense. Explain please.

Can we stop dissing the previous coaching staff?
Sure, last season sucked. Maybe Joker wasn’t ready to be a head coach. But he loved the program and the university. I don’t remember the last time I saw a man cry in his introductory press conference. If you recall, at the time we promoted him he was receiving A LOT of interest for head coaching vacancies at other schools, but he chose to stay here. It was considered a brilliant move at the time, but it just didn’t work out.
Consider Kyle Tucker’s comments from earlier today. If you really examine our previous staff, where they were, where they’ve gone, we had a great staff full of good coaches of high character. Mike Summers, in particular, was considered one of the best OL coaches in the nation. That’s why he’s at USC: because he’s one of the best and most respected coaches in the country. He was let go from UK for two very simple reasons:
1.) Stoops wanted to build his own identity, which could be problematic with old staff members hanging around, even if they are 100 percent in on the program and of the highest character, like Summers. It’s about a new identity, and that starts with removing the old.
2.) Blocking schemes are quite different between the Air Raid and the Pro-Style system we were running. Looking at different zones blocks, line shifts, formations, etc…it was just easier to go out and get a guy familiar with the Air Raid.
We had a great staff and a terrible season last year. They gave a lot to the program and unfortunately it just didn’t work. But guess what? We’ve got a new staff, a new identity. The past is the past: jus leave it there and be excited for what’s to come.
And stop with the vitriol towards the previous staff. BBN is supposed to be classy, a family. Act like it.
Cats.

#12 my guess is that his predictive text on his IPhone or iPad replaced definitely with defiantly, but who knows.
Some of you guys are clueless. Here’s a news flash for you…even suck teams can have good coaches. Even sucky teams with bad head coaches can have good position coaches. Summers is a renowned O line coach. No prob that Stoops cleaned house, but do a little research about Summers before making ignorant comments. He has been nominated for the Broyles Award as nation’s top asst. coach. Geez let it go people. Move on

What are you doing on KSR, Joker? lol
February 20th, 2013 at 12:22 pm
Proof is in the pudding.
Joker was a disaster, his schemes failed, his O line was ineffective (and that is kind), he lost control of his program, and was fired. Tried and true failure as Kentucky head coach. As good as Mike Summers maybe he couldn’t prove it at UK. It was past time to move on, good luck coaches.
Welcome Coach Stoops and better days, Go Cats!

Nice summary #13. Couldn’t have said it better myself.
February 20th, 2013 at 1:17 pm
It’s always Summers in LA. I do agree he needs to sign a multi year contract. After next year it will be free money.
February 20th, 2013 at 5:20 pm
#11 You wouldn’t call it “horrific” if you didn’t agree with the premise.
February 20th, 2013 at 7:54 pm
Good for him. It is better for him to have USC on his resume then Western KY.
February 20th, 2013 at 7:54 pm
Working for Kiffin… no thanks
