As excepted, Cal is not holding back in his postgame press conference. When it comes down to it, Cal said: “We have a couple of guys that are not real coachable.”
During the game, it was reported that Cal yelled “I can’t coach you” at Archie Goodwin, and he had another exchange with Alex Poythress in the second half. Things got so bad that Cal didn’t even sit in on the last huddle: “I’m not wasting my breath here. (They’re) not listening.”
“If they weren’t embarrassed enough by this to come to me and say, ‘What do you want us to do?’ then they shouldn’t be at Kentucky.”
Stole the words right out of my mouth.

Maybe they would have listened to me.
February 16th, 2013 at 3:58 pm
Sure didn’t take him long to throw players under the bus. Thanks BCG, I mean Cal.
February 16th, 2013 at 4:00 pm
Amen
February 16th, 2013 at 4:00 pm
It’s about time he starts putting some of this on the players.
February 16th, 2013 at 4:00 pm
“…and we have a whole bunch of guys who just can’t shoot the ball.”
February 16th, 2013 at 4:01 pm
2. shut up. I suppose you want him to just act like these guys are all killing it?
February 16th, 2013 at 4:02 pm
If the pupil hasn’t learned, the teacher hasn’t taught. Earn that 4 million dollar salary and quit throwing the players under the bus, you are the one that recruited them.
February 16th, 2013 at 4:02 pm
#2- are you kidding? if anything, Cal has shouldered TOO MUCH of the blame all season, telling anyone and everyone how much he likes his team and pointing to himself as the person who needs to figure out how to get them to gel together. i think a 30 point drubbing is more than reason enough to call a couple players’ coachability into question.
February 16th, 2013 at 4:02 pm
A lot of this is his problem too. They were better when they got here. They have only gotten worse.
February 16th, 2013 at 4:03 pm
Goodwin and Poythress should never play another minute at UK.
February 16th, 2013 at 4:03 pm
Trolls abound today in every thread…quit acting like you are UK fans…at least man up during your comment who you really root for instead of hiding behind a UK handle.
February 16th, 2013 at 4:04 pm
2. Julius Mays, a player, also “through those players under the bus” in his post-game interview with Pratt. He told a “few guys” to “not even show up for practice and quit the team.” But, yes, poor players.
February 16th, 2013 at 4:04 pm
@#2, Cal isn’t throwing them under the bus, they have been laying under the tires all year and are not improving. You sound like Tubby man…(And I liked Tubby, but he had to go)
February 16th, 2013 at 4:04 pm
Regardless of how Archie is gone after this year. He is Cal’s Rod Rhodes.
February 16th, 2013 at 4:05 pm
Be careful what you say UK fans. Remember – many of you were extremely harsh toward Bill Self at Kansas when he blasted some of his players following a Jayhawk slump.
February 16th, 2013 at 4:07 pm
A good coach needs to use his bench as motivation.
A great coach makes sure he has an adequate bench to use.
UK has no such bench. Who gets the blame for that when the cubbard’s bare?
February 16th, 2013 at 4:07 pm
@2 Didn’t take him long? We’re 25 games into the season (81% of regular season games) and he’s been telling us “I like this team” the entire time. Didn’t take him long?
You must be one of those fake fans WCS tweeted about.
February 16th, 2013 at 4:07 pm
I don’t think I would play arch or ryan until brian fouls out…zero fast break points…hood leads team with 3 offensive rebounds and as many baskets as arch and ryan in a lot less minutes…
February 16th, 2013 at 4:08 pm
Geez we have some dumbass fans. I am sure Cal “coaches” Archie to continually charge and play for himself. He also taught Poythress to give 1/4 ass effort. It was one of Cal’s goals to start a walk-on at PG when he got hired. He repeatedly tells Wiltjer to move like he has cinder block feet in practice too. Bunch of morons, he just led a team to a National Title, and I am sure he regrets recruiting a couple of these selfish assholes. But bitching about it and acting like he’s suddenly forgotten how to coach isn’t going to do shit. Only thing a UK fan can do at this point is count the days until this season ends and hope the trio of Poythress, Goodwin, and Harrow are never heard from again.
February 16th, 2013 at 4:08 pm
Put me in coach! I can average 2 charges a game like Archie.
February 16th, 2013 at 4:09 pm
14) That’s actually a really great comparison. Goodwin does remind me of Rhodes when I think about it. Both were overhyped coming into college, and never improved after playing in college. And we all know what kind of stellar basketball career Rhodes ended up having!
February 16th, 2013 at 4:09 pm
If these kids aren’t embarrassed enough to get it, then these kids just don’t care enough about themselves, their teammates or the team to ever get it. I hope to God they honestly have other plans in life because they will never make it in the Pros at least not for very long with their attitudes. This is a whole new level of immature !!
February 16th, 2013 at 4:10 pm
Bet there name is Poythrese (sic) and Harrow the latter is the ultimate WEAK LINK
February 16th, 2013 at 4:11 pm
Give me a damn break, throwing players under the bus!!! That’s total BS, Cal accepts more than any coach I’ve ever seen when his players are complete screw ups on & off the floor…There just comes a time when you have to call it what it is and that’s what he’s done. He’s tried every way possible to get in Archie & Alex’s heads and nothing has worked so he might as well just try this tactic now to get them to listen…Both guys suck, plain and simple, only things they have going for them is Archie is explosive & explodes right into a stupid ass play every chance he gets, and Alex looks like he should be able to play but doesn’t give 2 shits about doing it….I love UK and I don’t want to be coming down on them like some crazy ass fan, but at this point in the season if they were gonna learn anything it would be showing and it’s not showing at all…They can both hit the road, WCS, Wiltjer and the rest will be fine, Archie & Alex look like lost causes to me.
February 16th, 2013 at 4:11 pm
16… Don’t act like you know what ur talking about loser
February 16th, 2013 at 4:11 pm
Yea what a moron Cal is for recruiting a team of great players that r good enough to win a national championship then go play in the nba. If only he had enough sense to only recruit a group of decent players last year that might have gotten to the sweet 16 they would have come back this year and we could have beaten tenn by 7 and would have another sweet 16 to look forward too. Cal your such an idiot!
February 16th, 2013 at 4:12 pm
I think Archie just ran over someone in the locker room.
February 16th, 2013 at 4:13 pm
The bottom line is Goodwin is either really, really dumb or he isn’t coachable and refuses listen. Why he would believe doing it “his way” is the best way kina makes me lean towards dumb. Everyone in the state of KY cringes every time he drives the lane. He hasn’t learned anything since the season began and honestly I don’t see him learning anything the rest of the season either.
Poythress is another story. You can’t teach heart or effort and Poythress as consistently proved that he has neither.
I just hope there’s someone, somewhere out there that can convice these guys that they will get drafted. If these guys continue on their current path, I would prefer that they not stick around and spread this disease to next years team.
February 16th, 2013 at 4:13 pm
I don’t agree with coach saying kids are uncoachable. Remember they are 18 yr old kids.i thought they played hard today. Going forward I hope coach works in zone defense and start running more offensively.
February 16th, 2013 at 4:13 pm
Didn’t that skidmark Mark Story suggest this team should play like Gillespie’s team today? They obviously did. Sage advice, Mark “DamnWishIWasPetrino’sLover” Story.
February 16th, 2013 at 4:14 pm
56 days until the BW Spring game! Can’t wait! Stoooops!
February 16th, 2013 at 4:14 pm
Harrow no points, rebounds or assists in 18 minutes. But one TO and 5 fouls
February 16th, 2013 at 4:14 pm
Poythress, Goodwin, and Harrow….please turn the lights out on your way out at the end of the year. You 3 are not worthy of the jerseys you are wearing. You have been a disgrace to yourselves, your teammates, and the entire BBN.
February 16th, 2013 at 4:14 pm
The one game they had to step up for Noel themselves and the university of Kentucky and our church team plays better than that. Willie you need to concentrate on playing basketball and not us fans 4pts and fouled out. Way to make your fallen teammate feel even worse
February 16th, 2013 at 4:15 pm
Can we quit asking on your show wether we’d like to have Archie and Alex back over Randle or Gordon. We all need to apologize to Sean Woods because he was right. Nerlens and Mays are about it for this team. Not knocking the team personally I’m sure there good kids but the majority obviously act entitled to me. No effort or heart
February 16th, 2013 at 4:15 pm
I’m with you 28, please let them leave.
February 16th, 2013 at 4:16 pm
I agree 33 completely
February 16th, 2013 at 4:16 pm
#17 you’re an idiot. I mean after the game you moron. Does ANYBODY wonder why our shooters are not taking more 3s? Why we’re not zoning a team like UT that shot only 5 three pointers the WHOLE game? Why does he encourage Goodwin to drive all the time and charge or get his shot blocked into the 2nd row? You’re the idiot for not asking any questions and not thinking for yourself.
February 16th, 2013 at 4:16 pm
#19 hits the nail on the head: “Geez we have some dumbass fans. I am sure Cal “coaches” Archie to continually charge and play for himself. He also taught Poythress to give 1/4 ass effort. It was one of Cal’s goals to start a walk-on at PG when he got hired. He repeatedly tells Wiltjer to move like he has cinder block feet in practice too.” (Copy/pasted in case of deleted replies)
February 16th, 2013 at 4:16 pm
#16nailed it
February 16th, 2013 at 4:17 pm
Solution…quit playing Archie and Alex…why do u keep playing them. Play polson, Mays, Kyle, wcs, and hood…could it really be any worse than a 30 point loss to ut?
February 16th, 2013 at 4:18 pm
#40 Nailed it in your mouth or your ass?
February 16th, 2013 at 4:19 pm
Really #29? Seriously? You thought they played hard? Were you drunk during the game? This team got bitch slapped! And playing hard only pertained to the same several who always play hard. Even their own teammates called them out.
February 16th, 2013 at 4:21 pm
Half of the people on here need to learn how to think for themselves. Cal is not coaching the same style he has for the past 2 seasons. It’s all post up with no perimeter shooting, and then we wonder why we have 25 turnovers.
February 16th, 2013 at 4:21 pm
42 – look juvenile – more and more people are starting to see the truth. You MUST have depth. This team more than any in Calipari’s brief UK tenure – needs depth. It’s unrealistic to expect 18-year-olds to come in and play 30 plus minutes and be successful.
Poythress can be a really good player at UK – but he needs to be gradually acclimated to Division I college basketball. Many UK fans are starting to see this – and to toss out some 7th-grade level insult shows just how childish many of you on this board are.
February 16th, 2013 at 4:22 pm
Well, we all were wondering how the team would respond to Noel’s injury. We got our answer today. Cal and the assts. have been spot on in evaluating the prospects/recruits wherever they’ve been. I can’t believe they have missed on not only some of their abilities but their desire/drive/effort/heart…whatever you want to call it. The one-and-done situation has only compounded the issue. If I were Cal, I couldn’t wait to get rid of some of them. Help them out the door to the NBA. Next group in.
February 16th, 2013 at 4:24 pm
Some serious trolls on here, some guys don’t have what it takes to play for Kentucky, simple as that. This recruiting class didn’t pan out the way we hoped. Next year’s class will undoubtedly be A LOT better, chill out
February 16th, 2013 at 4:25 pm
#16 and #40 are likely the same person . . . and was a 5’9 250 third-string center on the Caverna High Colonels JV team 35 years ago. His claim to fame was going 1-for-2 from the charity stripe with one offensive board in 3 minutes of action against arch nemesis Hart County.
February 16th, 2013 at 4:28 pm
how can the NBA guys still project Goodwin and Poythress as 1st round picks? Don’t get me wrong…I definitely want those guys to be somewhere besides UK next year, but what makes the scouts think those 2 are first round picks? Potential? Really? C’mon Man!!!
February 16th, 2013 at 4:30 pm
48 – Try sticking to the subject.
Whose fault is it if a team does not have a deep bench?
UK football had no depth and who got the blame?
February 16th, 2013 at 4:30 pm
Not #16 just agree cubbards bare
February 16th, 2013 at 4:32 pm
Guys stop arguing… Sure this season sucks but I have a feeling something good with happen sure Archie hogs the ball more the Kobe Bryant and poythress jut doesn’t cre but stop bagging cal he didn’t do anything cal isn’t the one shooting the basketball
February 16th, 2013 at 4:32 pm
Who is to blame? What have been the consequences for not responding to the coach or being coach able? There have been no consequences. This is all on cal. Period. Goodwin makes same mistakes but stays in the game. Quit whining cal and do something. Sad day. They won’t listen to me so I won’t go coach my team in the huddle. Who quit…..players or cal?
February 16th, 2013 at 4:33 pm
Harrow and Poythress are two that did’nt show up today.Probably p issed because they did’nt start.
February 16th, 2013 at 4:33 pm
And really cal is doing this now to run this trip of Archie Alex and Ryan out of Lexington for the elite group next yet and when Noel returns to UK
February 16th, 2013 at 4:34 pm
53. Cal and the players both quit look at the defense in the last 10 mins don’t blame just cal
February 16th, 2013 at 4:37 pm
So quick to hate.. god we are a harsh fan base. Look, all these players are coming back, with a better all around team coming in to help out. Quit pushing our players out the door, they will improve they just need more than a year like most normal freshmen do. Plus, we will be deep and talented next year with a bit more experience.
February 16th, 2013 at 4:37 pm
Do you idiots not remember last year? It was only a few months ago so it should still be kinda fresh in your minds unless the meth has rotted your brains out. That team had almost no depth and they won more games than any other team in the HISTORY of the ncaa. You only need alot of depth when you have mediocre talent.
February 16th, 2013 at 4:38 pm
#49- Weak draft.
February 16th, 2013 at 4:39 pm
57 I would agree but Ben f they all stay they couldn’t bring in 6 recruits Noel and possibly wiggins without losing Goodwin Alex and Ryan
February 16th, 2013 at 4:39 pm
58. What depth are u talking about we had one of the best rosters last in year in the NCAA
February 16th, 2013 at 4:41 pm
59. weak draft or not…why would any NBA team draft goodwin or poythress in the first round. i can name 40 college players i’d rather have than either of those 2
February 16th, 2013 at 4:45 pm
Are the wheels falling off………..
This is looking bad from every angle
February 16th, 2013 at 4:47 pm
Do we have any coach on this current staff that is capable of coaching? We know they are all great recruiters, and many of us have trashed Cal for not coaching them up but what about the rest of the staff. None of these guys are earning their pay.
February 16th, 2013 at 4:52 pm
Wow, that was a hard game to watch. Noel is certainly the heart and soul of this team becasue there wasn’t much out there today. If there is a level beyond bitch slapped, we saw it today. What happens for the rest of the year will be interesting to watch. I expect there will be some playing for a roster spot next year. I agree that this is a very young team but at this point in the season, you have to man up and play the game as a team.
February 16th, 2013 at 4:53 pm
#2……seriously? Jerry Tipton is borderline genius beside comments such as yours. I’ve tried to think of something positive to say to counter some of the negative posts…..but I can’t come up with anything. Go Cats!!!
February 16th, 2013 at 4:57 pm
I’m sure glad we have so many people on here claiming to follow UK who just bash away at our guys. Cal wasn’t holding back in his press conference…he didn’t suddenly forget how to coach–he has some kids who are having alot of trouble getting “it”. I’m not happy with this year–but I won’t call out a guy who has took us to an Elite 8, a Final Four, and Natl title. If you are you are either a troll or unrealistic. I’ll remember all this junk next year when we are smoking fools by 30……and don’t come back to the bandwagon then.
February 16th, 2013 at 4:59 pm
Maybe it is time for coach to post the famous words of Richard Madison, something like “I am waiting until the NBA before I really show you what I can do.” I did not follow it, but I can not remember any highlights from his Pro career, nice guy though.
February 16th, 2013 at 5:00 pm
I really think a lot of the criticism comes because these players are being touted as high NBA draft picks.Still after all these terrible games that they have played, you look at the mock drafts and they still have Goodwin and Poythress going in the top ten to fifteen picks. And many of them have WCS as high as eleven or at least in the first round. If these players are supposedly so good then how can they get beat by 30 by a team as bad as Tennessee? That plus the fact they keep making the same mistakes over and over and over and over and over again.
February 16th, 2013 at 5:04 pm
Can’t we all just,,,,get along ????? Lay off the players,,,,they feel bad enough.
February 16th, 2013 at 5:06 pm
To all of you idiots out there talking crap about Cal, STFU. We have the best basketball coach in the nation and it isn’t even close. He has just ran into a bunch of players that either just don’t have what it takes or just wont listen. Either way, I’m sticking by Coach Cal and cannot wait till next year.
February 16th, 2013 at 5:07 pm
gog8tors – I vehemently disagree. If the pupil refuses to listen/apply, you can’t make him learn. FACT.
February 16th, 2013 at 5:10 pm
I hope they declare. I hope they hire agents. Because if they don’t they’ll come back and screw with the chemistry of another team. Bring back Wiltjer with some good guards that can create shots for him. Bring back a stronger WCS. Maybe Noel will want to return to help reboots his stock after the knee injury. Cal will learn to more thoroughly research the coachability of his high end prospects. He’s a fast learner, and after the heat of the NIT which the blue birds will throw his way, he won’t make the same mistake twice.
February 16th, 2013 at 5:20 pm
Something tells me all the “Fluffy Talk” about Arrghchie & Boythress working hard, 1st in gym, last out ect…. was just that……
February 16th, 2013 at 5:25 pm
I just listened to the post game interview, he didn’t throw anyone under the us, he told the truth. Now It’s on the players to buy in, work hard, and execute…. Like Cal has said before, he doesn’t have a magic wand, you have to work in order to be successful. A 24 hr facility to practice on your game yet only a couple guys use it because they have seen a couple mock drafts with their names on it. All 5* players aren’t the same. I hope next yrs guys play and work like last years guys. I’m still riding with this team, but the have to listen in order for them to get better as a team.
February 16th, 2013 at 5:28 pm
Ban Cheetos and Twitter!!!!
February 16th, 2013 at 5:29 pm
we did win the championship about 10-11 months ago. i do feel bad that we have a terrible team.
February 16th, 2013 at 5:30 pm
BREAKING NEWS: We have a couple of guys who are uncoachable. You could tell this from game 1!!!!
February 16th, 2013 at 5:40 pm
whats funny is half the bitcher on here are not even ky fans………cause if u are if u dont like it dont bitch just cheer for somebody else….sometimes it dont work out most it does…..NC one yr had 13 mc’d all americans didnt do crap for 2 yrs…won the title….u cant coach all the same way and the all dont adapt and pan out the same. again go cheer for somebody else!!!!!!! i’ll stick with uk and hang a few more banners…..IDIOTS
February 16th, 2013 at 5:42 pm
lol, #59 I think Im gonna through my name in the draft. If they are gonna take Goodwin and Poythress, just wait to the NBA sees my game.
February 16th, 2013 at 6:32 pm
oldschool and dave – Can you BOTH seriously not know how to spell cupboards?
#48 must have hit the nail on the head.
One thing if I were Cal, I would seriously think twice about taking kids from the programs that Archie, Alex, and Ryan came from in the future. They definitely did not learn good fundamentals on their high school/AAU teams. Kentucky is not where basic, fundamental basketball should have to be taught.
February 16th, 2013 at 6:39 pm
this years team was never very good ,youth, yes uncoachable, looking like it,coach missed with this group ? sure seames that way. but look out next year! we will be back!!let’s hope coach sends a message the rest of the year…..
February 16th, 2013 at 8:26 pm
Goodwin and Poythress are NOT coachable and haven’t been all year. Goodwin still does the same stupid one against three and Poythress likes to watch alot. Harrow acts like a baby most of the time and has no heart. Show BBN that you guys have some fight in you!
February 16th, 2013 at 9:02 pm
Coach, you brought them here. How do you not know they are coachable before signing them. I coached youth ball and made sure the kids knew I would rather lose without you than with you if you had attitude etc. In this case you can lose with them or without them but you still play them. Sit them a game or three and see if it sinks in.
February 16th, 2013 at 9:06 pm
HOW spoiled are we????
There have been 74 NCAA basketball champions, and none of the first 73 were lead primarily by freshmen. You know why? Because freshmen are 18 years old, they are kids, maturity and poise are several years away…..
February 16th, 2013 at 10:11 pm
I guess we should just fire Cal then. May as well stop eating at McDonalds also given that they bestowed All American status for 4 of our guys. Thanks for reminding me why I don’t need to spend a minute of my time on these message boards. Too many morons.
February 16th, 2013 at 10:42 pm
We all know they are young…BUT Goodwin , Poythress do not seem to want to listen !!This man has coached alot of guys. He should have called a few of them out earlier , but he wouldnt!!!!! He does care about them , so he feels obligated to shield them. We will come back next year!!
February 16th, 2013 at 11:10 pm
Yeah, Harrow and Goodwin need to improve their play. Even they couldn’t possibly deny it. But for fans to say they shouldn’t even be at UK is ridiculous. Like it or not, they will forever be Wildcats and if they manage to make it to the NBA or if they play overseas Big Blue Nation will be rooting for them to do well. For those who say they won’t, if you want someone to do bad in their future, then you really need to relax. No kidding. We need to cheer for these guys to do well even more than ever. They just lost one of their brothers to a season-ending injury and the last thing they need is people saying crazy things to them. They can still be a good team. They have still have good players and a good coach. Goodwin and Harrow haven’t been playing up to their potential. If they want UK to do better, they must step up. And do it right now. Only 6 games left in the regular season so the turn around must happen now. UK will go as Harrow and Goodwin goes and if we tear them apart from the team now then we can kiss the rest of the season goodbye. There isn’t too many more things more embarrassing than UK going to the friggin NIT. Harrow and Goodwin will be Wildcats forevermore and I am sure they would love to be a beloved member Big Blue Nation. Wouldn’t it be better to want to cheer for them the rest of this season and enjoy the success this team can still achieve than hate on them and be miserable and embarrassed while UK fails?
February 17th, 2013 at 12:49 am
Archie made stupid plays but at least you can see that he’s trying – if he can learn to shoot a mid range floater, see the court better. However, Poythress and Harrow just stand and watch and gave the least effort-translate to not much heart or no fighting spirit! I would not draft Poythress; he would be a bust!
February 17th, 2013 at 7:07 am
These guys came to UK to be coached by Cal to learn the game, be pushed to be the best, win championships, & get to the NBA. In the past not all players listened to Cal at first but when they did their game changed for the better!
We need Wall, Cousins, Bledsoe, Knight, Davis, Jorts, etc to talk with this group of players , not a team yet, to focus on listening to Cal and more importantly learn to trust each other and play like UK Wildcats play!
February 17th, 2013 at 7:58 pm
Goodwin and Poythress are coach-able and to throw these young men under the bus are unacceptable. Do we think Cal coached Derrick Rose, John Walls, Demarcus Cousins and some of the other highly rated freshmen that was recruited to KY. No!!! Cal wins on talent, not his coaching abilities. Now, it’s time to coach and he’s frustrated because he can’t. This recruiting class does not have the talented individuals as the past. The John Walls, Derrick Rose, and Tyreke Evans are not graduating from high school every year. The moment the one-and-done rule is removed, so will Cal be from KY.
