One player who might understand what Nerlens Noel is going through right now is Derek Anderson. If you’re too young to remember (why didn’t your parents tell you??), Anderson also tore his ACL back in 1997 during his senior year and was able to rehab and have a successful NBA career. Anderson is now an inspirational speaker and author, and spoke to the team last weekend about overcoming struggles. He tweeted Nerlens this after the news broke of his injury:
@nerlensnoel3 I’m headed to Kentucky NOW to help you get thru this. This will make u much stronger, physically & Mentally. C u Soon LIL Bro
— Derek L. Anderson(@DerekLAnderson) February 13, 2013
Anderson also told his followers that if it weren’t for the Big Blue Nation’s support in ’97 after his injury, he never would have played eleven years in the NBA or won an NBA Championship with the Miami Heat.

Derek has proven to be a great UK basketball alumnus. He’s been a real asset to the program and is great with fans. Glad to have him. #LaFamilia

I have seen how certain folks have a favorite UK player. I have so many…I guess I am in the minority but can’t list a favorite. I mean it’s cool that some of you can narrow it down but damn if I can.
February 13th, 2013 at 3:58 pm
All recruits who are on the fence about picking UK need to read this.
February 13th, 2013 at 3:58 pm
That is awesome!!!! Way to step up, Derek! That’s family right there!
February 13th, 2013 at 3:59 pm
Best of Luck Nerlen. The injury to Anderson cost us a championship. Bounce Bounce Noel/Big Blue Nation (BBN)
February 13th, 2013 at 3:59 pm
BBN go support DA….order his new book Stamina from his website derekandersonworks.com

I remember Anderson stepping in during the 1997 Final 4 and making two free-throws (technical foul, dead ball) after his “season-ending” ACL. Many may forget how special he was, what could have been in 1997 with him playing, etc. But wow…he brought tears to my eyes shooting those technical foul free-throws. Good deed, DA!
February 13th, 2013 at 4:03 pm
BBN unite!! No doubt there is also so much support for Nerlens that is going on behind the scenes that we’re not even seeing yet. Proud to be a Kentucky alum and fan. Players first…because if you take care of people first, then all else falls into place afterwards.
February 13th, 2013 at 4:04 pm

February 13th, 2013 at 4:31 pm
When Derek Anderson got hurt when I was kid and I was devastated. All the sudden I realized that Superman wasn’t invincible, Santa wasn’t real, and that life wasn’t fair. All in one ACL tear
February 13th, 2013 at 4:34 pm
This is awesome. Good reporting Mrs. TT
February 13th, 2013 at 4:35 pm
Maybe while he is here he can help the rest of the team not suck.
February 13th, 2013 at 4:41 pm
29) The post says 13feb13. Dude’s from the effin future!! On a serious note, It’s great to see all the well-wishers. I’m confident Noel will bounce back from this and be an even better person than he already is. Get well soon, big fella

#31 I doubt that very seriously!
February 13th, 2013 at 4:47 pm
why does the cover of DA’s books say Gold Medal Olympian? What Olympic team was he on?
February 13th, 2013 at 4:54 pm
Where is our resident troll, UL Doucheman? He/she/it predicted last night that BBN would “forget Noel”. Read this Doucheman! #LaFamilia#BBN You will never understand.
14: Great idea for BBN. I just ordered DA’s “Stamina”
February 13th, 2013 at 5:02 pm
The power of BBN! DA was awesome. How cool is this? It goes to show how important those ‘life lessons’ Coach has been talking about. Get well soon Nerlens!!!
February 13th, 2013 at 5:10 pm
One of the greatest achievements of Coach Cal’s time in Lexington has been bringing back all the older wildcat players to the BBN family. That had been missing for a long long time. Get well Nerlens…you will be fine.
February 13th, 2013 at 5:15 pm
Wow, this is really impressive. There really is a connection within the #BBN.
February 13th, 2013 at 5:27 pm
Who better than DA to help Nerlens through this? Kentucky effect never ceases to amaze.
February 13th, 2013 at 6:04 pm
For those of us who want to send him a card (via real mail!) where should we address it?
February 13th, 2013 at 6:58 pm
DA has the best “home grown pain killers” in the area. I’m sure his visit will make Nerlins feel better.
