John Calipari spoke glowingly of two of his players in his post-game comments. To no surprise, he was nearly giddy about the play of Jarrod Polson and Willie Cauley-Stein. Both players were instrumental in keying Kentucky’s offense during stretches in the first and second half. Archie Goodwin and Ryan Harrow had trouble and found themselves on the bench in favor of Polson at various points during the game. Polson finished with 20 minutes (3 points, 2 assists, 3 rebounds, 1 steal and 1 turnover) in one of his most impressive performances since the Maryland game. Cal said he was “thrilled” for Polson and “Willie was really good, boy. Whew.”
“We’re so happy with Jarrod Polson. So happy with Willie Cauley-Stein. And it was just energy.” Calipari continued to praise Polson’s play by adding, “Jarrod’s just doing whatever this team needs him to do. Other guys are worrying about how they’re playing.”
Willie Cauley-Stein has been huge for this Kentucky team since returning from his knee surgery. In his last 2 games off the bench he has scored 25 points on 10-12 shooting.
Calipari said that he is still working on Archie Goodwin, encouraging him to play for the team. “We were fine without him. It’s good for him to see it, too.”

Unfortunately, Archie seems like he has lost all confidence. He is not shooting anymore, he is “willing” the ball to the basket. No form, no follow thru, etc. He has to be good for this team to be great. Get it together young man!

1. Archie was never really a “shooter” in High School. He was always getting layups and dunks. He has to develope a shot. I agree that we definitely need him in March.

Ah Cal….any comments on the play of AP who looks like he is capable of taking over a game at any time?? He had 2 board the whole game and did not make a FG the 2nd half. Will he go down as one of or THE biggest underwheming 5 star athlete to attend UK by the time he leaves? The sad thng is that he seems like a real nice young man but that is apparentl the problem.

I would not be surprised if Cal had talked to Barbee beforehand and discussed the fact of being more physical to teach his young team on how to react to a game that I thought the refs did nothing to control. I would have stuck a hatchet man in there and taken out at least 3 players, not including the obvious pull the shorts down of my opposing player. The game is one of the worst officiated games I have witnessed!!!

Archie needs to begin each game on the bench so he discovers that a team doesnt start and end with him. Cal covers his ass, but its obvious he’s here on a one year plan. Sorry Archie, its not all about you and we may not “need” his shot selection in March.

Archie and Alex need to play through the crap charge calls they
continue to have called on them- like others in Cal’s system have.
Granted there’s been times they deserved it, but too often when
they do make a good move it’s waved off. Has to be frustrating
to them besides me.

PolCat! After Polson played so well in that Maryland game then Cal barely played him against all the scrub teams after that I was very disappointed. He should have been rewarded for his play and it would have continued to build his confidence. It turns out I couldn’t have been more right. I seen his hussle, I seen his heart and desire in that Maryland game. Things that are sorely missing in most of this team. I’ve been here long enough to remember guys like Pelphrey and Feldhouse. Guys you’d never guess could play but refused to believe that and excelled. Just imagine how much better he’d be right now with a bunch more game time minutes under his belt now. Cal made a big mistake there imo.

Jarrod has given solid minutes in most, if not all, of the games he’s played in. I don’t mean “bench” or “last option” solid, but solid minutes. When he’s in, I don’t worry about the other team starting a run because he plays smart, doesn’t turn it over too much, and has the mindset that he’s 6’8 240lbs. Willie is great because he loves it, just loves it and he plays that way. A buddy and I were talking about the Polson, Poythress, Noel, Cauley-Stein, and Wiltjer lineup and we both liked it and he said it’s because they’re having fun out there. I’m inclined to agree.

No player on this team should go in the draft, but NN most certainly will. None of the others are even close, but if NBA is dumb enough to make AG and AP high enough picks, then the kids should grab the quick money because they are not career guys. WCS should stay to hone his skills, despite NBA maybe drafting him high on potential alone. This team is an example of the one-and-done debacle that is the current system.

11) I like Polson as much as anybody. I too, think he has played well, but you act like Cal has just buried him on the bench. You conveniently forgot Duke exposing him. Polson is great against certain teams. He just doesn’t have the foot speed to play against teams with quick PG’s.
Cal has played him in games where he can succeed. Polson has made the most of his minutes in match ups that suit his skill, but don’t think Polson could be this good on a nightly basis.

16 Said it pefectly. Polson is a great guy. But if he is our best PG in march… then we have problems. He was exposed against Duke and Louisville when Russ Smith was gaurding him.

Polston is a good backup and plays to the best of his ability. Like Mays he just isn’t fast or athletic enough to be our starting point guard against elite teams.

Thanks to Mr Polson, Cal now has an eight man rotation; which definately helps us in SEC road games. Jarrod will also be a big boost for next year’s Cats, helping the frosh learn the system – an extention of Cal all suited up and helping to direct traffic.
