Nobody is safe in college basketball

by @ 12:10 pm. Filed under Blue Blooded Opinions

TCU won its first ever Big 12 game last night against No. 5 Kansas

After seeing Kansas drop consecutive games to unranked teams and Florida trail by as many as 23 points in its by double-digit loss to Arkansas, I’ve officially given up on believing any team is elite.  Everyone is beatable.  Even Indiana lost at home earlier this season, the only place I thought the Hoosiers were unbeatable.  Wrong.  Miami beat No. 1 Duke by 27 points; top-ranked Louisville lost three in a row; and North Carolina and Kentucky can’t buy a spot in the polls.  It really is a down year for college basketball.

We knew from the beginning the 2012-13 season would be down, but did anyone expect it to be this bad?  Filling out a respectable bracket this March is going to be impossible.  You’ll win your office pool if you get any of the Final Four teams.  Correctly pick the two teams in the championship game and you’re an expert. (I’m going with Butler and whatever team I draw from a hat.)

But this is great for Kentucky fans.  In the one year Calipari’s team is underachieving, the rest of America is also underachieving.

The timing couldn’t be better.

  1. Pick'm Says:

I’m going to let my dog fill out my bracket this year.

  2. Maybe Says:

I’m going to pick by uniform color.

  3. Smitty Says:

TCU has an RPI over 200!

  4. hersheyisabear Says:

Yea. Just a crappy year across the board for College BBall. The tournament is going to be crazy with a lot of upsets.

  5. Bears in da woods Says:

It’s years like this that we always expect there to be a lot of upsets and it’s when there ends up being the fewest. Pick chalk this year……

  6. jim jim Says:

Hell, with the way this year is going, we have a great shot at repeating !!!!

  7. UPIKE Says:

I like the University of Pikeville’s chances.

  8. Practice Says:

Would love to attend the next Kansas practice.

  9. Bradley Says:

Drew, will you be my personal bookie? If ND beating us in South Bend was an upset I’d love to wager on games with you. Not only was it not an upset, ND was actually favored by 1.5.

  10. No #1 Seeds Says:

The NCAA will just leave the #1 seed bracket line blank as they will not be able to pick 4 teams except by default. Yep, I like the Cats chances to repeat.

  11. Drew Franklin Says:

    9. — I used top 10 losses to unranked teams.

  12. Al's IndiCats Says:

As long as it isn’t IU, Uvel, Duke, any west coast team.

  13. Bballjoker Says:

    Want podcast!

  14. Raleigh Says:

OK State beating NC State was a neutral site (Puerto Rico Tipoff)

  15. Out Of Position Says:

My plan for picking each game is to ask myself, “What does Dan Dakich think?” Then, toss that out as irrelevant and go with something more reliable, like tea leaves or chicken gizzards.

  16. Irrelevant Coincidence Says:

John Wall team: 4 guys averaged 8.5+ ppg. Elite 8
Brandon Knight team: 5 averaged 8.5+ ppg. Final 4
Anthony Davis team: 6 averaged 8.5+ ppg. Champs
This Season: 6 average 8.5+ ppg (and WCS is close). Just sayin’

  17. George Akers Says:

That Leem0 guy at http://kentuckybasketballforum.com gets more right than anybody I’ve seen. He uses KenPom and several others as guides and then makes his own predictions for his Locks of the Day. He’s made a lot of people a lot of money.

  18. landsharkdad Says:

    #5 Kansas…whatever.

  19. Musehobo Says:

Don’t forget, we lost 9 games in the 2010-2011 season, and went to the Final Four. Gotta get hot at the right time.

  20. George Akers Says:

Yes, I’d much rather get hot at the end than be hot at the beginning.

  21. Shocklee Says:

Notre Dame was favored by 1 against us. I dont think that is a big upset.

  22. Shocklee Says:

Actually i just repeated what 9 said.

  23. Bradley Says:

    20. That’s what she said!!

  24. bung Says:

Our fast break is missing in the second half lately…fix that, wear and tie, and lookout…Go Cats…

  25. Wild Blue Says:

My Final Four as of today: Stony Brook, Bethune-Cookman, Quinnipiac and Houston Baptist.

  26. Miami Says:

Miami (FL) lost to Indiana State and a A-Sun team. I think it was FGCU.

  27. Home Loss Says:

Syracuse lost at MSG but I guess close enough…

  28. Oregon Says:

Did you notice the TCU student wearing an Oregon hoodie?
