A caller on this morning’s radio show asked Neal Brown about his weapons at quarterback and how he expects to use the three-headed monster next season. Though many believe it’s going to be a battle between Max Smith and Patrick Towles, Brown said Jalen Whitlow will have just as much of an opportunity to earn the starting role. Brown expects the competition to last through the summer and into fall camp before a starter emerges.
Brown said he prefers sticking to one quarterback over using a two-quarterback system, but he did hint at entertaining the idea of using Whitlow at times for mobility if one of the other guys is named starter.
Fans can also expect a Wildcat package; Brown said he has always used the Wildcat for as many as ten plays per game at Troy and at Texas Tech.

Really Anxious to see the Spring to Fall development in Patrick Towles that is not representative of Joker football!!! I think we are in for Great things at the QB position!

Whitlow will be the QB! He has the strongest arm fastest makes less mistakes and a year under his belt. Don’t know y people want to over look the facts. He will be all SEC

That is wishful thinking Fan Fan. I see no way that is possible. It will coming down to Smith or Towles and Towles was MADE for this offense.

I can see Whitlow moving to receiver and maybe get some wildcat looks. Just don’t see him getting time over Towles or Smith. Smith was having a decent year under a horrible offensive scheme until his injury. However, I would like to see Towles get the nod. I think he could be REALLY good as a junior and senior in this offense after three years starting.

Whitlow is the least accurate passer on the team, which means he will not win the position. Brown has said multiple times that in order to be his QB, its not about arm strength. You have to make smart quick decisions and you have to be accurate with the ball. I’m guessing it will be Max Smith.

I know there are a lot of skeptics out there, they don’t believe the 28th class in the country can make a difference. I just want to put into perspective the kind of foundation this class could lay. Lets take the 2009 class of the Oregon Ducks. In 2009 they finished with the #32 recruiting class in the country, the #5 class in the PAC 12, and 2.92 average rating from Rivals (who I believe to be the best recruiting service). That same database has us currently ranked #28 (with the potential to improve) and an average rating of 3.05. The 2009 class at Oregon went to 4 BCS bowls, including winning 2 of those games and this stretch included a trip to the BCS National Title game. Over this stretch they did improve their recruiting class ranking each time (which Stoops & Co. seem confident will occur), and Oregon had a foundation built prior to the 2009 season. This could be that foundation to build upon, you have to start somewhere. Only time will tell with this recruiting class. I’m sure the haters will attack this post, but I just wanted to share that bit of info with everyone.

Why do people keep thinking there won’t be WR screens without Joker? Does anyone actually remember the Mumme days? 2/3 of the offense were screen passes to Yeast/McCord types or dump offs to the running backs (check out White and Homer’s stats sometimes).
The difference is that the screens and dumpoffs were actually well-executed back then.

If our QB’s arn’t given time to allow routes to develop it won’t matter how strong their arm is or how accurate they can pass. Our O-Line must improve it’s pass protection over last year. Go Big Blue!!

Towels needs the starting job…get him a year under his belt even though we won’t win the SEC he can get some much needed experience and be better prepared for a Junior year that UK could really make some noise in. Either that or redshirt him. He is too talented to waste away on the bench behind Smith. Having said that…I do think smith will start if Towles does get the RS.

It’s Towles to lose. His limited plays last year showed more promise than anything the other QBs did.

Towels or Smith could start, but the key is the O Line. Towels or Smith can do what is needed for a QB in this offense…though I like Towels better…but it all depends on the O Line and how much they can improve.

9) The difference is Joker’s offense would involve screen after screen on 3rd and long, which the defense saw coming every time.

Smith is the best Qb we have right now if you look at what the 3 of them did last year. Before the injury, he was putting up impressive numbers. Towles is everyones favorite because of his Ky roots.

Smith was putting up some pretty good numbers against some meteokre opponents. Towles clearly shows the best promise among the 3.

Smith is accurate with a quick release..2 essentials in a Neil Brown offense. Towles held onto the ball too long in the Mississippi State game and probably needs several more practices to develop. Smith starts…Towles comes off the bench, and Whitlow switches over to slot receiver where his skill set can be further developed (quickness in open field).

#19 nailed it. Smith threw for 280 against Louisville ,354 Kent , 332 WKU (his worst game % wise). 3 bowl teams. Against Missouri 78 yds passing. Against Samford 113 yds passing. Two non bowl teams. Down the road Towles may develop to be better, but not right now.

When Brown played here, he saw the QB posiiton be handed to an in-state kid from Northern kentucky who fans perceived to be a home-state hero, despite the fact he had not won the job on the practie field. Max Smith may be feeling a little “dusty” come opening game.

looks like it will be some sad people when whitlow is named the starter. he is clearly more talented than anyof them. you towles fans seem to forget whitlow easily beat towles in every aspect of the game from coaches and players stand point. stronger arm, quicker release, more pocket presence, faster, stronger, learned the offence quicker and better. you people are either stupid or racist. just ask the players and former coaches! it was so obvious joker could not hide it from the team so he had to go with whitlow. as for max he was 2 years ahead in a complex offense!. not the case anymore! whitlow didnt even come from a passing offense and still beat them all out. he now has 7 games under his belt and some very good QB coaching from last yr.(Sanders) Sanders may not have been a good play caller be he is a very good QB coach. only way whitlow is not the starter is injury. his upside is the sky based on what i saw. also dont forget towles quit in the tenn game when he took a hit! i just cant see them beating out whitlow

ps dont forget max likes to pass the ball to the other team. whitlow had 2 interceptions last yr and one bounced off another player. keep in mind he is a true freshman in the SEC from a non passing offense in high school that got his teeth cut in the South Car game, under pressure from hell! willing to bet he will be a top 3 QB in the SEC in this offense. we have some real play callers now.

I have to go with fanfan. Whitlow should be the starter looking back at last season, but only time will tell. Remember the game Smith had against WKU.

Smith is by far the best QB on the team. Before he got injured he was having a great year. The reason he played poorly in the WKU game was because of a hurt shoulder which is the reason he didn’t play against Florida the next week. Whitlow is a great athlete but not a QB. He could become a good WR with some work. Can waste this talent on the bench. Towles had one good drive last year and that’s it. I’m not sure why everyone thinks he’s better then smith. Smith has all the experience and is a better decision making. Towles is unproven and will be the back up.
