[Moderated by Matt Jones, Drew Franklin and Tyler Thompson]

National Signing Day is Wednesday, when all the signed LOIs come through the fax machine, but it could be another week before Mark Stoops’ first class at Kentucky is complete. Tevin Lawson, an LSU commit, plans to hold off before signing the dotted line because he is visiting Kentucky this weekend to see what #BBN has to offer.
That’s right, an LSU commit is waiting to sign with LSU because he wants to see UK. This is real life, folks.
Lawson, a defensive tackle, is ESPN Recruiting’s No. 152 player overall, 30 spots ahead of Jason Hatcher. He recently decided to take a look at Kentucky when Les Miles asked him to greyshirt at LSU. Stoops’ track record and the opportunity to play right away without leaving the SEC makes the Cats an attractive option, but getting past the long distance between Lexington and his home in the bayou will take some convincing from the UK staff.

“greyshirt”?

While it might be different on another website, Tevin Lawson is currently listed on ESPN as the #6 overall Offensive Guard. You got the #152 overall player right though.

STOOPSSSSSS!!! This is really unbelievable, as I fell into the category with matt jones in thinking that recruiting top level talent to come to lexington was impossible for our football program! GO CATS

Is it possible we could get he and Hatcher? If so, it will be MAJOR. I cant wait to see the classes this staff will get 2-3 years from now. I am so excited. I knew not getting rid of my season tickets was a good idea.

3-
Grayshirt is another new term and is applied to the prospect that signs a letter of intent in February, but doesn’t report in the fall with his teammates. He delays entry to college until midyear, i.e. January. That NCAA five-year clock doesn’t start ticking until the player enrolls as a full time student, so gray-shirting is really a delayed version of red-shirting. For Example, Texas Tech, signed 34 players in February 2006, but NCAA rules prevent them from enrolling more than 25 to start the fall. Some of those nine other players gray-shirted during the 2006 fall season. They cannot enroll in college as full time students, can’t receive their scholarship, nor practice. It is like getting an extra year of practice, because most of these players don’t see the game field until two years later and they have the advantage of going through an extra spring practice.

Wow. #Stoops
February 4th, 2013 at 10:05 pm
One? We need MORE than just one!
February 4th, 2013 at 10:08 pm
I really cant wait to see how this class shakes out.
February 4th, 2013 at 10:09 pm
9) Spending your spare time trolling on another teams site…do you have any idea how pathetic that is?

We get Timmons and either this kid or Hatcher and well be in great shape for Stoops first class. I think even though our schedule is a murderers row, I think we have a good shot at an upset or two simply because of the element of surprise. Hard for coaches to game plan for something they’ve never seen.
February 4th, 2013 at 10:14 pm
Absolutely NO WAY we should touch this kid — NO WAY!! Who does Vince Young think he’s foolin’ with that Nappy Boy haircut?? We don’t care how bad you crapped out in the NFL, Vince, you can’t go back to school!! Somebody call #NotJerryTipton…

I’m not trying to be negative and stoops is doing a great job but I don’t see Lawson or hatcher coming here. Timmons yes. Lawson will sign with LSu and hatcher to usc

Just curious…how is our offensive line this year?
February 4th, 2013 at 10:35 pm
16. You would be wrong!!!
February 4th, 2013 at 10:36 pm
Bout time bought some good players
February 4th, 2013 at 10:58 pm
#16 It really does not matter what your feelings are about people you do not know.
February 4th, 2013 at 11:03 pm
#7 gray shirting is not a new term. Teams including UK have been doing it for years.
February 4th, 2013 at 11:13 pm
After all the money we have spent, this is the best we can get? We should have built a new arena and forgotten football…
February 5th, 2013 at 12:10 am
That’s a high schooler? That’s a grown man right there!
February 5th, 2013 at 7:25 am
Nice to be competing with LSU and Florida for recruits instead of Youngstown State and Eastern. If Joker was still coach do any of you think we would even get a mention from some of the recruits ? Just saying,,,,,,
February 5th, 2013 at 7:34 am
According to LSU sites, Lawson is having some clearing house issues that may not allow him to qualify for the Fall anyway. That’s the reason for the switch to a gray shirt offer. He claims to have the grades and test scores, but apparently, some of the courses may not qualify even though he passed them. He’s not happy about the switch, though, so he could sign with UK. Just hope it’s not another Porter situation.

That guy is in high school? Must be Greg Oden’s cousin or something!
February 5th, 2013 at 12:08 pm
7) people getting rid of the tickets is what made the turn around happen. If seats were still in the stands, JOKER still be here.
February 6th, 2013 at 2:58 pm
BEHoge is correct. In these days of 25 being the hard limit (they count whether they ultimately enroll or not) + of course any you can backdate via early enrollees against last year’s signing class shortfall, teams can’t afford to take chances on non-qualifiers too much. LSU already is taking a chance on R Robinson (DB not qualfied) and D Leslie (JUCO WR) who may or may not make it into LSU in the fall. Cutrer (S) has 0 chance of qualifying so LSU didn’t have him sign and will be JUCO bound. Lawson has the issue BeHoge mentioned, and yes, he and his coach says everything will be OK, but be honest…how many kids/coaches have EVER admitted to academic issues? Lawson has slid a little bit in the services rankings but his play on the field is not the problem…his academics may be.
