Despite only scoring two points, Nerlens Noel was the “difference maker” in the game, according to Ole Miss coach Andy Kennedy. Noel had twelve blocks, which is the new single-game record at Kentucky. More so, he made several of those while he had four fouls, including one memorable block on a would-be dunk.
After the game, Murphy Holloway called him the best shot blocker he’d every played against, including Anthony Davis. Strong words from a senior who just set the Ole Miss all-time rebounding record tonight.
Cherish him, BBN.

go Nerlens!
January 29th, 2013 at 11:41 pm
BBN loves you Nerlens!
January 29th, 2013 at 11:41 pm
He’s also rescued a puppy and is trending on twitter, gotta love the guy #NerlensIsGreat
January 29th, 2013 at 11:42 pm
Man oh man I wish we could have seen Nerlens and AD play together. Could you IMAGINE ?!?!?!
January 29th, 2013 at 11:42 pm
Nerlens is a prime example of why the NBA needs at least a 2 year rule. No offense. He still will be a top 5 pick in the draft.
January 29th, 2013 at 11:43 pm
I love Nerlens….except when he’s at the FT line.
January 29th, 2013 at 11:44 pm
He is absolutely amazing if he gets his offensive game better he will be the best player in the country without a doubt
January 29th, 2013 at 11:44 pm
Nerlens, my iPad autocorrect really wants me to call him Merlin. He is a block magician.
January 29th, 2013 at 11:44 pm
@5 Ha, I get it, Nerlens only scored 2 points so he has “no” “offense.”
I get it.
Brilliant.
January 29th, 2013 at 11:45 pm
Every time Archie hits the floor I have to drink a shot of Turkey. Damn, it’s hot in here.
January 29th, 2013 at 11:45 pm
Dakari has got big shoes to fill next year.
January 29th, 2013 at 11:45 pm
He potentially saved 24 points alone..not counting all the shots he altered! Too bad he can’t get his free throw stroke down!
January 29th, 2013 at 11:46 pm
By far my favorite player of the Cal era. He plays so hard every play and is smooth. Well not to smooth on the free throw line but he has heart!!
January 29th, 2013 at 11:46 pm
Nerlens almost blocked this post.
January 29th, 2013 at 11:46 pm
We saw this last year also. Can someone explain to me why an opposing team thinks they’d be able to get inside and score effectively? Are they delusional in thinking this happens to other teams, but it won’t to them, so let’s go inside and put the ball up. The only way they can score inside is if they’re able to pull Noel out away from the basket. Oh, you’re going to try and post him up? Yeah, chef Nerlens said you’re not allowed to bring that weak sauce into his kitchen! No soup for you, come back one year!
January 29th, 2013 at 11:47 pm
Good win tonight! Everyone seems to be getting on the same page. IN CAL WE TRUST!! GO CATS!!
January 29th, 2013 at 11:50 pm
Good game young cats. GD, and when I say GD I mean GD!
January 29th, 2013 at 11:50 pm
Noel and Wiltjer put this team on their backs tonight.
January 29th, 2013 at 11:53 pm
Are we going to be even better when Cauley-Stein comes back?
January 29th, 2013 at 11:54 pm
Time to print up the T-shirts folks. Fear the Flat-top!
January 29th, 2013 at 11:54 pm
If only Nerlens and Wiltjer could have a baby???!!
January 29th, 2013 at 11:55 pm
Noel has 95 blocks after 20 games which is 2 ahead what Davis had after 20 games last season.
January 29th, 2013 at 11:55 pm
18, they were clutch, but Alex, Archie, and Julius all made some key contributions – heck, Ryan hit a key 3-pointer down the stretch. It was a great TEAM win, IMO.
January 29th, 2013 at 11:55 pm
Most of you don’t have the balls to say it, but excellent 2nd half by Archie as well tonight.
January 29th, 2013 at 11:55 pm
Noel IS A BEAST!!! This team fought their butts off!!! GO CATS!!! Henderson isn’t a bad guy. He’s just intense, but not a dirty player. Now, Buckner is another story entirely! I was so psyched when Noel blocked his two handed monster slam dunk attempt!!! Oh yeah!!! And Kyle was incredible, especially when we couldn’t find offense. The rest of the team fought hard but Poythress was a hero in the second half. oh, and #5, Noel didn’t have very many offensive opportunities short of the free throw line. And if you have the first pick in the draft how do you pass on this guy?
January 29th, 2013 at 11:56 pm
So many impressive statistics but what blew me away was the poise and composure he had with 4 fouls. He was able to avoid body contact and still play 8 minutes down the stretch when refs weren’t letting anything slide. Gotta love it.
January 29th, 2013 at 11:56 pm
Goodwin played great tonight, hopefully he can keep it up.
January 29th, 2013 at 11:56 pm
Where is UK Freshmen tonight? No smarta$$ comments tonight?
January 29th, 2013 at 11:57 pm
I think Nerlins had 2 blocks with his sack.
January 29th, 2013 at 11:57 pm
@24 : My balls say Archie was finally “Archie” tonight!
January 29th, 2013 at 11:57 pm
I even thought Hood came in and gave Alex a breather in the first half. I don’t think he scored, but he didn’t hurt us. Think he got a rebound and played some decent defense.
January 29th, 2013 at 11:58 pm
Harrow had a big 3 pointer at the end.
January 29th, 2013 at 11:59 pm
Anybody want to put up a photoshop of Nerlens blocking the storms coming into our area like they did for A.D. last year?
January 29th, 2013 at 11:59 pm
Wow! Did we need that?!! This was a huge game! That 16-0 stretch was brutal…but we prevailed! Great job at the line Archie and Ryan! Great reserve minutes Hoody and Jarod. Keep shoot’in Kyle and Alex. All hail Nerlons!! I vote for Willie to wear the bow tow and the glasses when he returns.
January 29th, 2013 at 11:59 pm
I give Smarter Archie all the credit in the world. It’s DumbSelfish Archie that makes my head spin.
January 30th, 2013 at 12:00 am
32. Biggest shot of the game, hell, season to this point. We needed a bucket in a bad way when knocked that trey down.
January 30th, 2013 at 12:02 am
IT SHOUKD BE CALLED THE “BLOX” CUT!!!
January 30th, 2013 at 12:03 am
He frustrates me to plenty of times. My post was directed at those who just crush everything he does and even send him tweets dogging him. Those people are idiots and won’t be on here giving credit where it’s due.
January 30th, 2013 at 12:06 am
Noel won this game. The few times he was out, Cats fell apart.
January 30th, 2013 at 12:07 am
#11: It won’t be Dakari but Marcus Lee who will be primarily swatting shots next year.
January 30th, 2013 at 12:10 am
What a treat tonight. That was the best defensive performance that I can remember seeing in a D1 game. Reminded me a lot of the intimidation you would see out of Patrick Ewing. Only difference is that Nerlens is a technically better defender. He is always in the right position and always in the stance. I can’t remember seeing a young guy this gifted willing to put in the work it takes to be a great defender. Enjoy it folks!
January 30th, 2013 at 12:12 am
15: Noel had 4 fouls. It was smart to drive right at him and it worked effectively for a few minutes. As the clock ran down, I think Noel decided he would take a fifth foul if it meant blocking a layup or dunk. I don’t think Ole Miss had a bad strategy, it’s just that Nerlens became Superman at the end. I do wonder why Marsha Brady Henderson didn’t try to take over at the end and jack up more 3′s in an attempt to come back. He even passed on an open 3 in the last 2 minutes. I think he gave up.
January 30th, 2013 at 12:16 am
Those blocks after he got his 4th were awesome. (And the 3rd and 4th fouls seemed like he only did them because he was tired.)
I kept expecting them to go at him more, especially when Wiltjer stopped hitting shots and we forgot about Pothress, but the guys played stoically in the few minutes Noel was on the bench, and Polson and Hood played some big minutes with the whole team in foul trouble in the first half. Great team effort. I just wish Archie would make some of those passes a few seconds earlier.
January 30th, 2013 at 12:17 am
Kyle was huge. Nerlens saved our bacon … How are you player of the game without making a basket? Dominate the lane on D. 12 Blocks!
January 30th, 2013 at 12:17 am
[post blocked by Nerlens Noel]
January 30th, 2013 at 12:19 am
42) Seems like if his shot isn’t falling (it wasn’t – he had like half of his points at the line), he loses all his fire and sulks. Kennedy said dude tried to take it all on his shoulders in the first half when they had foul trouble. Go big or go home. Unfortunately for Ole Miss, dude went home several times during the game.
January 30th, 2013 at 12:19 am
11,40: “Next year’s Cats are gonna be like a box of chocolates. When you open ‘em up, you never know what you’re gonna get.” But it will be good! Johnson and Lee will both be swatting. What about WCS? Next year we’ll have depth and even more straight-up talent. I can wait after tonight’s game. This team still has a shot at a UK-worthy season (higher standard than IU-do we put this Ole Miss game on a popcorn box?)
January 30th, 2013 at 12:25 am
46: Agreed. I commented on an earlier post that the hype seemed to have gotten in Henderson’s head more than in the Cats’. He had a lot of pressure (self-induced) to have a monster game tonight and he wilted. Told Kennedy to take him out of the game at crunch time! If this was the only game you had to get an impression of Henderson . . . well, he wasn’t the internet H-bomb tonight.
January 30th, 2013 at 12:59 am
Does this game catch AD on the block record pace, I know they mentioned Noel was 7 off after last game. I saw people mentioning Marcus Lee and I’m telling you that kid is special, he will start no matter who else the cats pick up. He’s a great defenses but more importantly he guts himself going after every rebound, and that’s something cal’s teams require.
January 30th, 2013 at 1:36 am
Nerlens has played well all year. Kid seems to be better off the court as well. What ever NBA team gets him next year will be well pleased! Imagine just what kinda numbers this kid would have put up on last years team. AD had a lot more freedom last year because of the players on that team. All those guys could take chances because they knew a teammate had their back if they missed on a play. Nerlens knows if he gets beat it will lead to a easy bucket for the other team.
AD was great but the team last year made them all look better. AD won every award possible and was the first pick and rightfully so, but I’m still not sure he was the best player on the team! Just my option but I thought MKG was the best on that team and Definatly was the hart of the team!
January 30th, 2013 at 2:04 am
Nerlens also comes by the elementary school that I teach at here in Lexington where he volunteers with the foreign kiddos at least once a week! He is one of the most outstanding individuals I have ever seen go through UK, both as a player and a person! Noel has the biggest heart ON AND OFF the court and it really is something that need to be acknowledged as much as possible! Nerlens is quickly becoming one of my all time favorites and I know that he will always be that same kind of person!! So in the same realm as the John Wall dance, can we please get the “High Top Dance” that he did at BBM going!! I do it in class all the time and the kids love it!

Statistical analysis, really GOOD stattistical analysis showing Nerlends is the best college defender in the past decade.
January 30th, 2013 at 1:15 pm
I want to thank Archie for most of the game, not hunting his shot! He still waits too long to dish the ball, because he is wanting to shot if at all posssible, BUT, he played a very good game.
Ok, now that I ate crow about Archie, the offense flowed real smooth, when Polson and Hood got some quality minutes.
Was this the 1st game this year, that Archie didn’t attempt the most shots on the team! Sorry, I couldn’t help myself.
I agree, several guys played key roles in this win, hopefully they will realize that that is what it is going to take to improve, and win.
January 30th, 2013 at 2:44 pm
#51) I’m glad to see that Nerlens comes to your school and helps the kid there. I have a friend who works at UK childern’s hospital and he says Noel comes over a lot to see the kids with little fan fair! Really is great to see a kid who is going to be millionaire in a couple of months being a first class person, With all the trouble we see other athletes getting into it refreshing to see a good kid being rewarded.
The most impressive thing Cal has done at UK is not only has he brought in great players, but most have been good kids. Even Big Cuz who has been dubbed a thug by a lot of media outlets is actually a very nice kid away from the court. I met him while he was in Lexington and he was very friendly and kind to people who asked him for some time.
