Well it was one of those games in Rupp Arena last night. Now mind you, I am not talking about a game that thrills your soul, brings you out of your seat and has you screaming to the rafters that it is great to be in the presence of such basketball superiority. I mean a game that has those inside looking at each other and asking, “Honey, if we hurry home can we still make it for the end of that Everest show on the Discovery Channel?” (which is good by the way). Put simply, most of the Kentucky-College of Charleston game was miserable. Watching it made me want to poke my eyes out…..especially in the first ten minutes when a slogan of one of my old coaches came to mind….”Boys why dont we just lower the goal to eight feet and go to twelve and call this a night.”
But in the end, the game was tolerable in its last 30 minutes and did have some notable moments:
(1) Randolph Morris continued his progression towards manhood by scoring eighteen points and looking like the only dominant player on the floor. Randolph has developed his offensive game to such a degree that he makes you believe he will score every time…..as the year progresses and he continues to score, he will draw more double teams, getting open shots for Ramel, Joe and the Freshmen….
(2) Martin Newton, fresh off his award for thirteenth best color commentator in Rupp Arena made a nice slip of the tongue at one point saying that Perry Stevenson got away with a “p*ss” down on the block….that must have been somewhat difficult.
(3) It was Perry Stevenson time in Rupp Arena as the young fella showed a ton of low-post moves and even a nifty touch off the backboard, while scoring 14 points. I long believed that Perry would be the slowest developing of the freshmen, but he has shown that his time is now and that he can respond to a demotion in the lineup. Stevenson and the freshmen are showing the strength of this class and will most certainly see their minutes continue to increase as the season goes farther along.
(4) Great to see Ashley Judd at the game. However Ashley’s look is starting to change…..she has officially moved from “hot girl in the movies” to a more “good looking mother of two” look…..she is still very attractive, but she isnt exactly the smoking princess that is in the movies running in the woods from (or with) Morgan Freeman. But she does look much improved from last year’s Kansas game when I was about to call the folks at “Extreme Makeover”
(5) Good to see our man Joe Crawford hustling and diving for loose balls. Such play from Crawford is contagious and shows just how much more emotionally involved he is this season. Also emotionally involved, but much less successful is our man “The Future” who continues to just seem off track. With Woo and Sheray you know what you are getting…..guys who come in and bang and make mistakes…..but with Perry, he is adding the deicsion to take bad shots. COME ON BOBBY!!!! The Future is Now!!!
(6) Seriously, is there anyone worse than Rob Bromley…..anyone? I mean how many plays does a guy have to predict wrong before people realize that he is adding nothing to the proceedings? I am sure he is a nice guy, but one has to realize that these “in-huddle” reports are becoming more and more of a joke……”Drink every time Rob says that we will do a curl for a jumper that doesnt happen”!!!!
(7) Can someone say Coury Flurry? I mean Napoleon is starting to get a soft spot in my heart…..if he will just get some goggles, we will be rollin…..
(8) Good to see our man Bobby Cremins. He had the “prematurely old look” way before Taylor Hicks and he has yet to make a Ford commercial, so I am a big fan. IT is clear that he is short on talent (and by the looks of that one player, has taken to signing 12 year olds), but he is one of the nicest coaches I have met and I loved seeing him in Rupp…..especially since we were winning.
(9) I hope folks were watching the Duke-Indiana game. Actually I hope you werent…..because it once again confirms, as it does every year, how many things about Duke basketball get on my nerves…..whether it is the floor slapping, the created dramas (how much do we miss Greg Paulus), Coach K arguing about every call, the dorky fans in the stands (where I once was….however not cheering), the Dickie V panting……and oh yeah, the fact they win….that stinks too. Oh well, every Mozart needs a Salieri
(10) Poor Woo.
Its Wednesday….check for more stuff during the day…..and why dont we try something new on these comments…..lighthearted fun…..do it for me…..it will make me happy.

Man, Bobby is trying WAY too hard. He knows a lot of people expect more out of him ever since the UAB and UConn games last year, and making a comment similar to, “I know I can play like I did in that UConn game but I don’t understand why I’m not doing it now” is just more proof that he is feeling the pressure and it is in the back of his mind throughout the game. If he would relax, play less like Josh Carrier, and just let the game come to him we would see a lot better performance out of him.

It’s now officially Christmas time. Even if you are not scared enough of going into Rupp area to watch a game these days, I have decide to start raddled my chains during foul shoots since our B-line defense suxs.
I also plan to take Tubby on a Christmas Carol tour. I play Ghost of Christmas Past, Rob Bromley plays Ghost of Christmas Present, and Tom Crean play Ghost/Coach of Christmas Future. Sheray or Woo will be Tiny Tim. Hopefully at the end of the trip you will all wake up and see what a terrible dream it all as been, unless were are pounded by the Blue Goats and Brandon “should been a Cat” Wright next weekend. Then you might be wondering aimlessly around the rest of the season like me.
Is there any other famous Adolph’s in the world besides Hitler and me? I always hated that first name.

i was there as well. once again i say - the cats had 6 pts in the first 8-10 minutes and still finished up w/77… and this includes extended time for sheray thomas who contributed a whole lot of nothing (i am not trying to be mean or bash either, it’s simply the truth). i hope he was just giving sheray a chance to play better against a lesser team. unfortunately, that didn’t happen. if he doesn’t play likes it’s UofL out there against UNC on saturday, he will be worthless.
nice efforts from craw, bradley, morris, stevenson, jasper, meeks, porter and COURY!!!!!!!! perry looks lost and he only wants to shoot. when in the hell did he become such a gunner? i don’t think he fed the post once.
no offense randolph, but perry stevenson was the player of the game. by far. maybe tubby doesn’t want them talking to the press yet (the freshmen)… i kinda enjoyed watching it in person. i don’t think i’ll catch the replay tho.
i’m also waiting on tubby to play stevenson and morris together for extended minutes. perry will be the open man if they double morris and we all saw that perry stevenson can finish around the rim just fine thanks.

i was also disappointed when perry missed that finger-roll right there at the end and he got high-fived by hanson and rigot. i’m sorry, but i would’ve ripped him, senior or not, for not finishing. you cannot do that on saturday bobby.

Although I love the kid, I have to say I’ve been as dissapointed as anyone with Bobby Perry this season. Last year in the early part of the season he couldn’t hit a layup, but he developed into a pretty good spot shooter in critical situations. I think part of the problem this year (in addition to the injured hand) is that he is trying to be a scorer, looking for his shot too much. He needs to go back to being that “sneak up on you” guy, not try to be a “go-to” guy.

That suxed. If the Indy guard would of hit it, he would have be called for traveling. So, it would not made a difference. I’m not sure we want to play IU this year. I think we are both on similar levels.

it was nice to see ashley judd… but then i saw where she was sitting and i began to look over there every so often.. i would feel like a stalker, but then i realize that everyone in the erruption zone was looking over there.. then i would realize that some of the guys in the erruption zone would wait till silence took over the crowd to say “I LOVE YOU ASHLEY!”… I actually didnt feel like less of a stalker, i just felt like i was amongst the same people… oh yea, the game sucked… i felt like i was watching a better higschool team play a worse highschool team.. Randolph’s missed layup almost made me throw up on the person in front of me. good thing i didnt, because he was bigger than i.. Perry needs to put on muscle, or fat, or bone mass.. just put on something so you actually strike fear in the eyes of something.. there were times where he could have absolutely ripped down the rim if he was a little more stronger.. but his offensive game is starting to pick up.. hes starting to shoot, and hes starting to play tougher..

I know that it was the end of the game and all when Napoleon got in the game, but I really want to see him get some more minutes. He has that whole calm Yoda thing to him…. I mean cant you just see him saying, “You know, like nunchuck skills, bowhunting skills, computer hacking skills… Girls only want boyfriends who have great skills. So lets show em ours…. Gosh! I mean how do you think Brewer got the mono… Gosh!”

perry did not take bad shots, he is just not a finisher. sheray and woo do not deserve scholarships with the University of Kentucky and that is a fact. play jared carter and hope for a confidence boost.

Randy had 17 points, not 18. But most importantly, the guy who “can’t rebound” is averaging 8 boards a game to go along with 16 points and 1 block. That 4 rebounds per outing could mean the difference for UK this year (and to pro scouts). Also, I love lamp.

It was apparent, even from row R, that Mrs. Judd has turned into a housewife. No way those are the same jeans she wore two years ago. Beginning of the game looked like a middle school game where the amount of missed shots were painful. Can we all agree that the worst part about going to Rupp is idiot who always seems to sit behind you. The guy behind me tonight was explained every single rule (what foul shots were, what traveling was, and what the three point line was for example) and then proceeded to comment every time two or more players hit the floor that “this wasn’t football.” I cannot imagine growing up with a Y chromosome and knowing so little about sports. Maybe I was raised a jock, but some sort of interest in sports seems innate. Maybe not. I just hope he’s had enough basketball for a while.

Duke may win but they have nowhere near the talen they had last year. The only good team they played on a neutral floor resulted in a LOSS. The Zag will take them down as well. I can see Duke losing 7-10 games without looking at everygame on their schedule. I could see NC beating them twice. Maryland at least once. GT at least once. The Zags

Keeping with Matt’s wishes I shall keep this light hearted and admit that I dozed off twice in the first half and once again in the second. (Side Note)I haven’t felt this rested since I slept through the entire,”Sparks torches Bama” game at Tuscaloosa. That’s all I have to say about that.

Seeing Mark Coury run down the floor just makes me realize how bad kentucky basketball has been the last 8 years…i mean seriously…when the highlight of the game is joe crawford diving on the floor for a loose ball, against a horrible C of C team (well coached),but horrible, it makes me really think about what Kentucky basketball has become.. I love UK just as much as ne one, but i just cant get psyched up for a game ne more..i dread this saturday and this game should make the hairs on my neck stand up, but it isnt like that ne more..i dunno….Go CATS…please show me somethin fellas…(Coury Flurry runs like napoleon too)…

BTW, if you want a drinking game that will get you wasted right quick, do a shot every time Martin Newton starts off a sentence with “I’ll tell you what” or “I’m gonna tell you something” (well, that’s why you’re there, right?). It’s the latest version of Sam Bowie’s, “Ralph, when you talk about the game of basketball…” except that I actually liked Sam.

Matt, funny you mentioned that you thought Ashley Judd is now more of a MILF than the hot movie star chick. When the camera first showed her sitting by Coach Donna, I turned to my wife and said, “Man, she looks like she’s been rode hard and put up wet!!” She agreed and asked me if that really was Ashley or someone impersonating her. I will never forget the famous UK Hockey team poster though…I will never forget!!

Bobby Perry is what he is guys. He’s a solid hustle guy, but rarely will he be the guy you saw at the end of last year. He’ll give you those occaisional games though. That’s a solid contributor, but UK fans thought he was going to turn into a Hayes like contributor and that just isn’t going to happen.
This team is so hard to figure, I think Saturday is going to tell us a lot about our team. Tonights game was really painful to watch for a long time, and COC simply isn’t very good. But after Maui it’s a game we really needed. Now, can we compete with UNC, can we keep it a close game even if we can’t pull off the upset? Those are the things that I’m looking for Saturday. They’re athletic and play fast, something we haven’t handled well this year. Should be interesting.

Was it just me or were we a different team with Bobby and Sheray on the floor together(not in a good way). If they stay out of the same lineup, they don’t seem to look as bad. It’s also interesting to see that we didn’t do ANYTHING until Jasper and Meeks replaced Bradley and Perry. We looked even better a few seconds later when Stevenson replaced Thomas.

I have a couple of questions that I wanted to get everyone’s take on.
First: (Considering last year’s game at Rupp) If UNC gets the win over Ohio State, do you all think UNC will take UK lightly and come out overly confident?
Second: Am I the only one who thinks UK has one of the HARDEST (if not THE HARDEST) early season schedules in the country? Example: first 10 games include- Depaul (better than their record shows), UCLA, Memphis, UNC, Indiana, and Louisville! That is a tough schedule for a team that depends a lot on their freshmen. If you don’t think that will make us better come March, then you are crazy!

He brings a lot more to the table imho than any of the seniors and we should be developing the youngs guys for
future battles.

I know this off the subject, but I watched some of the FSU-Wisconsin game. Does anybody squander more talent than Leonard Hamilton? It’s a shame we couldn’t get Julian Vaughn to visit here because his talent will be wasted at FSU. Oh well.

I think Bromley’s inside the huddle is a great idea, but its executed poorly (indicative of UK basketball overall).
At one point I think Bromley was like “I couldn’t hear what Tubby said but it was something about defense”. Thats the kind of reporting that gives me keen insight to the inner workings of UK Basketball.
Look, at least CBS and Fox gives you a hot looking woman to report nonsense back to the booth.

Ashley was sooooooooo cute last night - Love her! The way she jumped up in the wildcat mascots arms and bear hugged him made me jealous
Mark ” Little Rambus” Coury was enfuego! He looked like he was having fun too…
Perry Stevenson’s sweet turn around kisser off the glass- oh yeah, liked seeing that shot. He impresses me more on a consistent basis than anyone.
Jasper played nice at the point and did a great job feeding off the wing last night. He may not have scored, but he rebounded etc., and played good defense.
Morris - he could get 30 if he REALLY wanted to - I just want to see him play like someone smacked his mom 1 time! -he’s too damned vanilla on the court.
Porter - can you say 3333333333333333 - he’s money.
Sheray - was Sheray - God love his heart.
Put our man Woo in there too. Woo tries as hard as anyone, but I can hear the 3 stooges mucic whenever there’s action around him - hahahaha
The only thing I would tell Joe is to make his cross over dribbles a little less frequent - or get quicker doing it - sometimes I think he’s tying his shoes its so slow - hahahaha - but Joe is consistently solid.

I just noticed we gave up 46 points in the second half as well. You’re right, it didn’t seem like it. I think a lot of that was toward the end of the game when it was a little less intense and the lineup had some of our weaker defensive teams in. Not a habit you want to get into, though. Anyway, Sheray hasn’t put up huge numbers, but he really has played much better defense. No doubt PS will eventually catch up defensively, there’s more to it than blocks, but for now Sheray just needs to do his thing and not even think about numbers.
Another interesting thing, every player that played got at least one rebound. I wonder when the last time that happened. Also, the interior passing is a million times better this year. Not that it did any good in the first half when noone could hit a layup or dunk to save their lives, but still, it’s nice to see that after it was missing all of last year.
Finally, do you think Tubby and the team call timeouts sometimes just to utter gibberish plays and confuse Bromley? They then can watch him try to figure out on the replay and have a good laugh.

34, no our schedule isn’t that difficult. Depaul is NOT better then their record, Uofl and IU are unranked. UCLA/Memphis/UNC are all tough draws but three tough games before conference is not unusual.
BTW- We started a lineup of all upper classman last night. Stop with the nonsense that we’re a young team.

#42–Her name is Stacey Dales-Schuman and she was an outstanding basketball player at Oklahoma for the Lady Sooners. She was the Big-12 Player of the Year in ‘01 and ‘02 and was a KODAK All-American the same seasons. She blew out her knee her freshman season and has had some knee probelmes since.
She was the 3rd overall pick in 2002 for the Mystics and played 3 season in Washington before playing w/Chicago last season. She has averaged 8.9 ppg. and 2.7 assists for her career. She has been a WNBA all-star and is a highly respected player and person! She played on the Canadien Women’s National team and led the team in scoring during the Olympics.
She is a studio analyst for the women’s basketball shows on ESPN!
By the way no one is wrong for thinking Stacey Dales is hot, b/c she is smokin’ hot and she can play and talk about the greatest game ever! This is a basketball guy’s dream girl!

I have to disagree with the idea the Pery Stevenson is the best of the new freshman. Physically I think he is goin to dominate lesser competition and therefor look better but I think that he will also struggle the most aginast heavier larger forwards theat he will see on Saturday and during SEC play.

In the context of a tough conference schedule, the three games against very good teams in UCLA, Memphis, and UNC are pretty significant. IU is no pushover and UL I don’t really know about. Overall though, it is a tough schedule; probably one of the tougher schedules in the country. It should be, though. Nothing wrong with that. And in fairness, 34 said we are a team that depends a lot on our freshmen. That’s pretty accurate. The freshmen accounted for almost a 1/3 of the playing time, and scholorship guys are playing at critical times. All the guy was saying is that playing tough teams will make them better.

What I’m saying is that we’re not young by today’s college basketball standards. All of the top teams depend on freshman. Many of the top teams start mostly freshman and sophmores. Florida won it all with a lineup dominated by soph’s.

Stevenson is definitely going to have harder times against bigger competition, but his shot block ing presence is going to make a huge impact in ANY game. The reason I would argue that Hubby’s man-crush (as long the flavor of the week hasn’t changed) is well-placed because of the need we have for Stevenson. I love Jasper and Meeks, but the inside need of Stevenson places him ahead of other frosh. That’s why I think he is better.

Stevenson will defintely have trouble with the Whopper eating boys underneath, but I think as he gets wiser to the “game” he’ll develop some of those veteran type tricks on the court to put what he does have to his advantage. With the playing time that he is already seeing, it will only benefit him long term. Love the kids consistency night in and night out.

I think Mr. Stevenson has been quite inconsistent, as far as the stat numbers are concerned. I do like the consistency of his effort, though.
Oh, and in answer to your #51 post: Georgia Tech, North Carolina, Ohio State, and Texas are all heavily freshman dependent.

AMH, I believe Lex, who has as much love for me as you do, answered your question. But I would also include teams that depend on soph’s as well. Kansas for instance has 2 Fr, 3 soph’s in their top 6 guys. That’s definately as young as we are, as many freshmen and more sophmores in their top 6.
I may get on your last nerve, but I can back up most of my statements. We’re not young by today’s standards.

Lex, I’d like to see Coury get some meaningful minutes against a team like COC just to see what he can do. Having a physical kid that can shoot, even if athletically limited might not be a bad deal. But I agree, can’t tell much from the garbage time.

Play the Freshman, Carter, And the Jr.’s -forget the seniors, and we would be better this year and next. Morris, Stevenson, Bradley, Crawford, and Jasper/Meeks would be much better. Use Carter 1st big guy off the bench and let the chips fall where they may. I guarantee we would be better off by March with this lineup. BTW, and news on Moses? Thanks, RMorgan

TomS, I think that your proposed rotation gives UK the best offensive attack possible. However, Tubby’s focuse is clearly on the defense, and I don’t know if Stevenson, Jasper, and Meeks (to a lesser extent) are up to Tubby’s defensive standards right now. I am not saying I agree with that, but that is likely the reason for the current rotation.
Fans focus on, and want, offense. Unfortunately (fortunately??), the fans don’t run the team….

Pete, by the end of the year I believe that rotation will be the best defense/offense combination. You might have to rely less on ball line, and more on their natural skills on defense but that’s not a bad thing. If I were coach I’d use the pre-conference schedule to set up the team for March. That means you’re not necessarily going to be at your best in Nov/Dec but it should mean you’re better off in March then you would otherwise be.

TomS- I agree with what you’re saying. Thing is, Tubby wekaness is loyalty, and you know he’ll play Sheray, Woo, and Bobby Perry, for the most part, before the freshman until they leave or graduate. Hope I’m wrong.

You know, if it weren’t for these freshmen, this team would be just awful to watch. It’s been great so far. Perry Stevenson is the second coming of Tayshaun, Meeks has the potential to play like Bogan, and Jasper’s a totally new breed of cat (PUN INTENDED). We’re not going to win out this year, but we’ll play some tight ballgames and we’ll watch some fun kids learn a lot about how to play this game. I’m looking forward to everything!

PS is more like Riddick then Prince. But that’s not a knock, I loved the human pogo stick.
Meeks is the 2nd coming of Bogans. I love his agressiveness.
Jasper is Prince at the point.
Porter is actually the rare diamond in the rough. I’m pleasantly surprised since I wasn’t expecting much. But that kid is a lighter skinned Epps(my favorite Pitino Cat).
I have to admit, although I was right on Jasper and Meeks, I was 100% wrong on how long it would take PS to contribute and I was wrong on Porter(this kid is a player). Now, can the upper classmen start playing with the energy of the freshman?
