Alex Poythress roars to a double-double: “Without him, we don’t win”

A week ago would you have expected the following 3 descriptions from an opposing coach on Alex Poythress following a game? “Really tough on boards”… “really strong” …”a big difference maker”? Probably not.

Those were all of the words used by LSU’s coach Johnny Jones to describe the performance of Kentucky’s inconsistent freshman Alex Poythress. Poythress was anything but inconsistent today, posting his first double-double of the season, leading Kentucky to a win today with 20 points and 12 rebounds.

John Calipari was glowing about Poythress’ performance after the game as well. “I was so proud of Alex. I can’t begin to tell ya. He has basically, in his mind, been tortured to play hard and compete. It’s like torture to him. Making him run, making him do individuals. For him to go out and make those free throws, and come up with those balls to help us win that game…And he smiled. First time he’s smiled all year. When he walked off the court, he smiled. I was happy with him.”

“He’s getting it…Without him, we don’t win.”

I think we can probably all agree on that.

    Archie played 37 minutes….why

  2. Mike Says:

What a difference a year makes..we go from hanging a banner, to getting the #1 recruiting class but even more important have gone from Champs to Chumps. Obviously the pundits that put us preseason #3 had no idea….neither did any of us.

  3. bung Says:

13 fast break points instead of 4 or zero made a big difference…

  4. Rex Chapman Says:

    2.) Go kill yourself

  5. bell county man Says:

Someone please tell me how Mays earns 33 minutes playing time. The guy is a joke. Could not guard the water bucket. Cal never jumps him even afer 3 or 4 TO or losing his man but let Wiltjer or Polson do one wrong thing and they or jecked from the game. Polythress had great day but played less time than Mays. I am glad he will be gone after this year. Like watching Sean Sutton play for his dad.

  6. blueballs Says:

so now we are suppose to be happy with Alex getting a double double that he should get ever game against a weak lsu team we should had beat by 20…boy are standard are low after last year team.MKG and liggins can get that in there sleep when they was here

  7. Bobbum man Says:

    5- couldn’t agree more, he’s terrible
2- can you stop we the “we” and “us”? You’re obviously some douche UL fan who’s a little butt hurt about dropping 3 in a row… Run along now

  8. Bobbum man Says:

  9. fancoulo Says:

why does this win feel like a loss

  10. Negative Nelly Says:

#6 I have to agree w/ you blueballs…. This LSU team is not only bad but also really small so Ms. Poythress should score 20 on them. I will be surprised if we can manage to win one game on the road this year! Team literally quits for long stretches for no reason.

  11. Rex Chapman Says:

10.) we already have an SEC road win. Oh and go kill yourself

  12. bung Says:

only 7 assists for the team usually won’t win…

  13. RuppinCOsays Says:

I am trying to love this team, really I am. Noel is special. All effort and results. Everyone else is when it feels food. The rest of the team PLEASE watch video of Chuck Hayes and King Rex. You give that effort every possession then we are cooking with gas…..otherwise we are NIT bound. It’s not too late.

  14. UK2001 Says:

Lsu beat a and m on the road. Only player im sick of is goodwin. Great player. But a freaking ball hog. Louisville lost 3 in a row. Suck it cards.

  15. Negative Nelly Says:

#11 why so serious? Your small penis shouldn’t be a reason for such violent comments… And btw most people knew I was speaking of one road win going forward.

  16. katzrjamers Says:

OK, so we’re not as good as any of the previous three teams under Cal. We should have won by more today, no matter how bad the refs were – LSU is not a very good team. Given that, I don’t get all these “fans” beating dead horses. i.e. AP hasn’t produced what Cal expects. Today he was much better. i.e. KW is soft. He had three really good games in a row and a decent game today.

I don’t know that we’re NIT bound, no one does until we get through the SEC tourney. I don’t like seeing our Cats in that position, but that’s where we are. And you know what? Even if we land in the NIT, I’m still behind my team. If you can’t back them, then come back next year.

    Go Cats!

  17. Rex Chapman Says:

15.) Your comments are lame. I hope your parents get cancer and you kill yourself. We could stand to lose a few fans.

  18. twit Says:

@15- …And btw most people know what you said, not what you meant. Sorry about your penis fixation.

  19. mudcreekmark Says:

Wiltjer has been our go to player the last three games and has produced. His confidence was soaring. So tonight He gets 23 minutes and Mays gets 34? WTF is going on in Cals mind? Our offense has looked its best when Wiltjer posts up and we run our offense thru him. So what does Cal do? He post Noel up and runs thru him. Don’t get me wrong, I love Noel, but he doesn’t have the offensive game that Wiltjer has. Wiltjer will either score or get an assist most of the time if we just run thru him. We had 7 assists on 27 baskets, which is horrible. Our two point guards played a combined 38 minutes and had one assist. Again, I love Harrow but the last two games has not been his best.

  20. gcat4496@yahoo.com Says:

Mays played at Wright State last year and is just a fill in player this year. He is just an ok college guy, so he not going to be flying through the air dunking on people. Polson resembles Justin Bieber more than John Stockton. Kyle Wilter is a 4 year college guy. Ryan Harrow is a 4 year college guy. Goodwin has talent but plays out of control more often than not. Stein is out with an injury. Poythress stepped up today. And Noel is always bringing his A game. In a nutshell, we have about a 19-12 team on our hand that will struggle. You thought they turned a corner at Auburn but it easy to rout a team that goes 0-15 from 3. Usually, our opponents bring their A game at us we play lackadaisical. Bottom line, this is Cal’s worst team and there is not much upside with a little more than a month left. If there is any good news, perhaps 2,3 or maybe 4 of these guys will return giving us some experience to go along with a star studded class next year.

  21. Negative Nelly Says:

Rex Chapman … Wow! Did you really just type that?? My mother did die of cancer and I wouldn’t wish that on anyone even a little immature punk like yourself.. Wow! Just wow!

  22. Rex Chapman Says:

21.) she must have been as negative as you.

  23. Real UK fan Says:

I’m with Rex, get a gun Negitive Nelly.

  24. really?? Says:

I can’t believe some of the crap that gets posted on here. Hey moderators why don’t you do your job and moderate. Its disgusting!!!

  25. Disgusted with some fans Says:

Why is everyone being so hard on Mays? You do realize that he is the only one to make any 3 pointers today and without those 6 points we lose. Also our consective games with a made 3 point shot would have been broken. It’s disgusting the way some so called fans just look for the negative things the players do and never want to see the good things they do no matter how small. So stop your complaing and just support the team.

  26. mudcreekmark Says:

The statements on this post is telling. It tortures Poythress to play hard. Either you have the heart or you don’t and this kid does not have what it takes. No matter how much Cal or the fans want for him to be a great player, he has to want it too and he doesn’t.I am not impressed at all by the game he played. We played against a terrible and small lineup and barely won. So he made some dunks and layups. Most high school players his size can dunk the ball. Did he get the ball in triple threat and beat his man off the dribble, no. Did he post up and make an up and under move? no. Poythress does not own the skills, period. For him to be an NBA first round draft pick or even a half way decent college player, he would have to be a slasher type player. He cannot handle the ball well enough to take another player off the dribble and beat him to the basket. If I were guarding him, I’d force him to go left and that would be it. He can not dribble with his left hand. I don’t know if I’ve ever seen him even try, which tells me he cannot. He only has one move, get the ball on the baseline and dribble right handed right on the baseline. Thats it.

  27. Negative Nelly Says:

Sorry to be such a lame-ass downer, but what did yall expect? Read my name for crying out loud. Oh and I’m still butt hurt from my Cards losing 3 in a row.

  28. Wildcatsteeler Says:

I’d love to be excited about this but as soon as he plays anyone even remotely physical he’ll be a no show again. He’s as confused as Rodrick Rhodes and as emotionless as Jones. He just doesn’t have the confidence and understanding of the game. He’ll flunk out of the nba fast.
