[Moderated by Matt Jones]

Let me just say that the guy above is someone that I am not a fan of in the least. When I think of people that are unentertaining and have an amazing ability to grate on my nerves, Andy Dick comes in just above Jay Leno on my list…..only because Andy Dick does not have a nightly talk show. However today of course is the day that we play College of Charleston in a game at Rupp Arena that could be a lot closer than people think going in. And Andy Dick is one of the only famous people I can find who ever attended College of Charleston (though he didnt graduate), so you get Andy Dick on this Tuesday.
Now for those of you that havent yet listened, I hope you will take the time to listen to EPISODE 15 with Jay Bilas and Patrick Patterson. For those of you that have listened, it has been interesting to hear people’s thoughts. Everyone takes from the Patterson interview what they want to take. I didnt find it overly negative or positive, but simply just an interview. UK is still in it and I think the situation is stagnant for now. As for Jay Bilas, I am happy about that interview because Jay is GREAT and it is clear that he loves UK.
Not a whole lot has happened, but a few quick hits…..
(1) Tubby announced a new starting lineup for tomorrow night’s game. Says that Perry Stevenson will not be in the starting lineup and that there will be some change…..likely a re-entry by Say-hey Sheray. I am not a huge fan of this move, but not for the reasons that you may think. I think Sheray did fine in Maui and is actually playing better this season than last…..however because Tubby likes to do mass substitutions, I like the notion of Perry with the more experienced guys on the first team and Sheray with all the freshmen on the second team. Either way this “new look” lineup, which is a lot like the “old look” lineup, debuts tonight….we shall see what we shall see.
(2) More and more whispers that the Music City Bowl is the likely destination for the Cats. The current projections have the Music City getting either Boston College or Clemson (which would be a nice rematch of the 1993 Peach Bowl and the famous Marty Moore fumble) and the Cats either in Nashville or Memphis. If BOTH bowls put UK first, which may be likely, then UK gets to choose which they want to attend. I am hearing that the folks in power want Music City due to the better matchup. We shall see if that turns out to be true, but I am PULLING for Nashville…..much better scene, better game and we get to take over a Nashville bar for the show…..so let Mitch Barnhart hear…..NASHVILLE!!!!
(3) After the posting of our Patrick Patterson interview today I got a phone call from someone with some connections to the whole Patterson scene. He said he wanted to make sure that I “let the UK fans know that not only are the Cats still in this, they are right there at the top along with another team.” He of course wouldnt tell me what that other team is (Florida), but he said that UK continues to have a much better shot than many would let on. Take this (and all) info with a grain of salt, but I think it is likely close to the truth. My best sources on Pat have told me for some time that Florida is the leader, UK second. I would think that is still true, and is one reason that the decision to wait was ultimately good for the Cats (as opposed to the Lucas postponement).
An abbreviated version today, but it is late and time to watch David Letterman. Look for more on the College of Charleston game tomorrow (including a game thread for you to chat during the proceedings) and post-game coverage afterwards……and oh yeah, listen to EPISODE 15 so Hubby can feed his many children…..

Hope your source on Paterson isn’t Hnason or Rigot ! hahaha Would be worth perhaps 1 and1/2 grains of salt imo !
November 27th, 2006 at 11:59 pm
Mags, what have you heard regarding Akol? Will the staff make an offer and take the first to commit between Patterson and Akol? Also, what have you heard on Akol’s academic standing at the moment and is there interest on his end?
November 28th, 2006 at 12:01 am
Andy Dick’s Tuesday News and Views
November 28th, 2006 at 12:32 am
I would love to land Patterson, but he is so hard to read from the two interviews I’ve heard and what I’ve read. I think (no sources at all) if we landed Lucas that would really help…but what do I know? I think if landed Moses, Patterson, and Lucas it may cause my mind to explode.
November 28th, 2006 at 12:34 am
Andy Dick?!?!?..Is he Dee Snyders evil twin???
November 28th, 2006 at 12:34 am
Akol has been reported to have been really working hard on getting his grades up. The word is this kid has HUGE upside! I think he’d be a nice fit at UK!
Is there news on Jai Lucas thaqt I have missed? Matt’s comment about Jai’s postponement being unlike Patterson’s.
From what PPAT said on the interview I can see Jai being a CAT pretty soon, possibly. If the reports are true about him making the decision so he can concentrate on his senior season, we may find out rather soon!
November 28th, 2006 at 1:15 am
Isn’t Andy Dick gay?…… not that theres anything wrong with that…
November 28th, 2006 at 1:38 am
Matt,
try Stephen Colbert for a College of Charleston grad. He is from SC and started at Hampden-Sydney college in Va with my cousin. Then transfered there.
November 28th, 2006 at 1:39 am
Stephen Colbert of Comedy Central. Isn’t Andy Dick dead?
November 28th, 2006 at 1:41 am
I was wrong he transferred to Northwestern.
November 28th, 2006 at 2:38 am
We will get Patrick Patterson, because of our awesome coach. C’mon, let’s start the Tubby chant! Tubby, Tubby, Tubby!!!
November 28th, 2006 at 5:55 am
Wow, starting Thomas. I guess that is a, wait a minute, I don’t know what that is!
November 28th, 2006 at 6:30 am
can’t believe stevensen doesn’t get the start against charleston. he’s been wicked against the smaller teams and brings much more to the table than sheray does. unless the guy stevensen is playing has more than a 20 pound weight advantage, you have to play stevensen. my only guess is sheray has looked better in practice now that our schedule has given us time to do that. someone slap the person that came up with us playing 5 games in 8 days while traveling to maui.
November 28th, 2006 at 6:50 am
I thought I read that Stevenson is a little banged up (ankle) from Maui. Just read that, not sure if true or not.
November 28th, 2006 at 7:10 am
Why shouldn’t I start? I’m a scoring and rebounding machine.
November 28th, 2006 at 7:12 am
Matt is it possible Donovan has told pp & jai to wait to see if tub leaves in spring and that he may be at ky?
November 28th, 2006 at 7:25 am
I don’t see why Billy D would leave Florida. For UK or anywhere else.
November 28th, 2006 at 7:34 am
I wouldn’t say that Jay “loves UK”. He loves Duke, but probably likes UK.
Big difference there, he is great at what he does though.
November 28th, 2006 at 7:54 am
I look for Sheray to get a double, double tonight.
November 28th, 2006 at 7:57 am
quote” My best sources on Pat have told me for some time that Florida is the leader, UK second. I would think that is still true, and is one reason that the decision to wait was ultimately good for the Cats (as opposed to the Lucas postponement).” unquote
if true , why would UF be the leader?????
after all the time orlando has put in
November 28th, 2006 at 8:07 am
#14, during his press conference yesterday, UKAtheletics has Tubby talking about Swatzilla being banged up and having turned an ankle in Maui.
November 28th, 2006 at 8:20 am
The flu must be going around because some of you must definatly have a high fever. The only good info comming out about Patterson is comming directly from the OTS camp for obvious reasons. Unless Florida has a complete meltdown or Billy comes to UK soon or Patterson will never be hooked to the plow. Duke is still a player in this as well, and if they need to they can always up the benefit package. Last please for the love of god do not chant Tubbi, at least wait until he does something to deserve it. At this point about the only thing he could do is respectully resign and apologize for using the R card against the University and the fans.
November 28th, 2006 at 8:21 am
#19, Sheray will probably get a double-double tonight (10 missed assignments and 12 lost looks).
November 28th, 2006 at 8:23 am
#23, amen!
November 28th, 2006 at 8:48 am
Thomas in at UK? WOW I hope PS is a little banged up. If not, THomas has “played” his way into the UK starting line up by averaging 1.7 ppg and 0.6 rebounds. Maybe it’s just me but those numbers scream PPPAAATTTEEERRRSSSOOONNNN!
After watching UCLA, Memphis, UNC, Florida and Kansas play I must say that we are no where near their level of athletes. Clearly our Sr. and Jr. classes are not. I also question if Crawford is more strong than quick, as is Morris. Just not enough quickness, jumping ability and agility for us. When looking for that FF berth, we sure are at a disadvantage. Yeah, we’ll win 20 or more but after that…….
I hope that AJ Stewart, Harris and whoever else we get (PP, Moses) can change the scales of athleticism on the team to match with with those top, elite teams.
I feel, as we all do, that UK should not be taking a second tier seat in terms of athleticism.
November 28th, 2006 at 8:51 am
Among the many errors in my above statement, I meant to say the Sr. and Soph. classes are not very athletic compared to the top elite teams, not our Sr. and Jr. classes

And the once mighty sailing vessel remains broken. Sinking further and further into the cold
depths of the abyss. Many have taken life boats to escape, but some keep boarding. Maning their
thymbols to remove the reality of the freezing water. Yet as the captain and his crew guard their
treasure with their life, he reassures his loyal mates of his intention to right the ship.
Those sailing away in life boats safely wonder why they ever ventured out to the raging unknown
with a captain that should have never been in the first place.
November 28th, 2006 at 9:09 am
You can’t escape a Duke law grad with poor Tubby metaphor
November 28th, 2006 at 9:13 am
Does anyone else see pulling Perry S. as a mistake on more than one level?
Does anyone else see mad Joe C. Part II is he’s moved to the 3?
November 28th, 2006 at 9:18 am
AMH, I say that Meeks is first to transfer, then Stevenson. So sad. If they can just tough it out
one more year. Then it will be better.
November 28th, 2006 at 9:22 am
Are you guys smoking rat sh*t? None of these freshmen are transfering.
November 28th, 2006 at 9:25 am
It wouldn’t suprise me if Tubby started Donna Smith
at power forward. She could no doubt put up Sheray
Thomas like numbers!
November 28th, 2006 at 9:25 am
#32 “I” NEVER said anyone was transfering. I am just concerned about a few of the kids mentioned in my post, and how they will feel about the moves by Smith. No more no less.
November 28th, 2006 at 9:26 am
You are right 32, we only average 2 transfers a year, but it could be anyone. My bad.
November 28th, 2006 at 9:27 am
On the bright side, we will be pleasantly surprised by any contribution that Sheray gives us.
On Bilas, OF COURSE he loves Duke. He played there and coached there. If he didn’t love them, you’d have to question whether he had a heart. The point is, he (unlike Packer) realizes that his role in not to cheerlead for his favorite team/conference. He respects Kentucky deeply, respects Tubby even more, and calls things honestly when we’re playing (which is all you can really ask).
November 28th, 2006 at 9:31 am
Kate Winslet was halarious on Letterman!
November 28th, 2006 at 9:36 am
Folks are kidding themselves if they think Donovan is leaving Florida for the NBA , UK or any other place. Donovan is building his own dynasty at Florida….he is one of the top paid college coaches. If Patterson has Florida number one on his list…..my guess is that he will be a Gator! Hopefully, Tubby can sign Moses and another good front line player. Our best chance to land Patterson was in the weeks following his attendance at Big Blue Madness….when that didn’t happen….the writing was on the wall that UK’s chances were diminishing. Hopefully, I’m wrong about Patterson, because this will be a huge setback for 07 recruiting!
November 28th, 2006 at 10:13 am
I suspect that Tubby is starting Thomas so he will have someone on the floor fgf floor that knows how and accually will set a screen. Thomas will also at least attempt to guard the base line unlike some of the other players that just let them drive th base line and dunk.
November 28th, 2006 at 10:25 am
Moving Crawford to the 3 is a silly move. Tried it last year, it failed. Why try it again? The guy is a 2. If he can’t play that then bring him off the bench.
November 28th, 2006 at 10:37 am
I would like to thank you all for destroying a once great site.Your Mama’s and Papa’s sure must be proud.Maybe some of ya’ll take a page out of their book and choke to death on a ham sandwich.
November 28th, 2006 at 10:42 am
Stevenson not starting is more linked to him being banged up at the moment.
November 28th, 2006 at 10:47 am
I’ve not read anywhere that Stevenson is banged up. Does anyone know where that’s been printed?
November 28th, 2006 at 10:48 am
I don’t think Crawford will be at the three that often.
If he is it’s only on offense and jasper will defend the three the majority of the time.
November 28th, 2006 at 10:51 am
#43 - it’s on the transcript of Tubby presser (yesterday) posted on UKAA website.
November 28th, 2006 at 10:56 am
Folks, it doesn’t matter who starts. It’s the other end that we are having problems with.
We can’t close out anyone with any ferocity. We need to be forcing the tempo and guarding
our basket.
Until we do that, it doesn’t matter who starts.
I say bring Sheray off the bench until his numbers improve. We need a mix of leadership with
the youngsters.
November 28th, 2006 at 10:59 am
45, ok, he didn’t say anything about it last night on his radio show. Maybe it’s just a minor deal.
November 28th, 2006 at 11:11 am
If you are a player on our beloved Cats, you completely have the admiration of thousands of fans. Some level of respect comes with being on the team; Chuck Hayes-like levels are only earned. I guess I must be behind the times since I believe to disrespect a player is to disrespect the team. A fan should stick up for their team when it’s disrespected. So here I am.
If we were the fans of a NBA team on here, I could better reconcile the player disrespect, but our players aren’t paid outside of a scholarship. Whether an amateur player is a great player or not, he should be paid respect.
November 28th, 2006 at 11:20 am
Winning cures all ills. We’ve been ill 46.7% of the time in the past 30 games. I’m ready to get well again, I sure hope this team will prove to be a good Dr. the rest of the year.
November 28th, 2006 at 11:27 am
Well said. Thank you Gus.
November 28th, 2006 at 11:48 am
#49 that’s incorrect. UK is 18-12 the last 30 games. 3-2 this year and 15-10 closing out last year.
The 16-14 stat is incorrect. Check Jon Scott website.
November 28th, 2006 at 11:48 am
I never would have guessed that we didn’t lead for Patterson.
November 28th, 2006 at 11:51 am
He’s going to Pitt. Something about the Business School there. I don’t know what. (j/k)
November 28th, 2006 at 11:53 am
#1, Stevenson is injured so not starting.
#2, Noone said anything about Crawdaddy playing the 3spot.
#3, None of the freshmen are mad or planning transfers
#4, Stop ruining this site with pointless complaints when u don’t know what is going on.
#5, Stop insulting our players if u wanna call urself a cat fan.
#6, The sky is not falling, so get a life.
November 28th, 2006 at 12:04 pm
PP is going to Pitt? Did I read that right?
November 28th, 2006 at 12:05 pm
#51 and all, that is correct, didn’t mean to skew the statistic worse than it actually is. Should have said “We’ve been ill 40% of the time in the past 30 games.”
November 28th, 2006 at 12:07 pm
Preach on, Katdaddy…
November 28th, 2006 at 12:09 pm
55. He is teasing me. PP is NOT going to Pitt.
November 28th, 2006 at 12:10 pm
Mark - It - Down. Donovon will be coaching in the NBA next year. Donovan does not have a contract in place for coaching at Florida next year.
That is part of what PP is waiting to see play out.
November 28th, 2006 at 12:12 pm
#55 I’m Just Kidding (j/k) Deplion - he’s a Biz School Prof at Pitt.
November 28th, 2006 at 12:16 pm
People worry too much about the name on the back
of the jersey, instead of the front. If we had
players like that we wouldn’t stand for it.
Lighten up people.
November 28th, 2006 at 12:49 pm
#64 Al, well, there is a team that is about an hour or so away drive from Lexington that is red and white that doesn’t have this fan base. Y don’t u give them a call, i’ll even buy u their flag to hang on your front door. Maybe u can watch another exciting NIT tourney!
November 28th, 2006 at 12:56 pm
We all know last year was not up to standards. However, lets not confuse this year with last year. This year has so much more promise than last year. We are 3 and 2 after playing two very tough teams in UCLA and Memphis. Both of these told us alot about our teams weaknesses AND strengths. However, we seem to only dwell on the weaknesses. This team will make some significant strides. We may take a few more losses like against UNC, Alabama and Florida because we don’t have the big bodies yet but things can and will improve. I know from teaching tht if you want good results you don’t put down a child, a coworker, etc but you point out the strengths and CONSTRUCTIVELY point out the weaknesses. I have seen much more tearing down of the team than encouragement. GO CATS!!!
November 28th, 2006 at 1:00 pm
#69, u r right, u don’t have to practice coach luv to be a fan, however, it does go too far when u randomly say players are going to transfer and calling these kids so many different names. Now what does that have to do with the coach?
November 28th, 2006 at 1:00 pm
Opinions are like assholes.Everybody has one and some of them smell really bad. What this site doesn’t have is fun and the irreverent tone that made it special. That’s on you fellas. Some of ya’ll have a way of expressing yourself that would make Mr.Rogers and King Friday enter into a suicide pact and swallow the business end of a shotgun.Course that’s just my asshole.I could be wrong.
November 28th, 2006 at 1:01 pm
Maybe Ramon Harris will help us out alot.
November 28th, 2006 at 1:02 pm
#72 King Friday creeps me out - like the Burger King.
November 28th, 2006 at 1:10 pm
I will continue to erase comments that turn non-Tubby threads into Tubby threads….
November 28th, 2006 at 1:11 pm
I understand Tubby’s decision to go with Sheray. I don’t happen to agree with it but when you go 1-2 in Maui and you know that the OOC schedule is shaping up to kick your butt you make decisions for the short term.
With the news on Patterson, it would seem that Stevenson is the long term issue that needs as much experience as he can get. Sheray, for better or for worse has had his shot.
November 28th, 2006 at 1:15 pm
#74, much of what we all watched as kids would now, as revisiting adults, play more twisted than the best mental thriller that Hollywood can throw at us.
Meow-meow second meow’s opinion on the “land of make-believe”. Meow…. (Henrietta talk for those who don’t remember.
Twisted stuff indeed.
November 28th, 2006 at 1:24 pm
Hoopmasters on Jai Lucas:
“Jai Lucas 5-10 160 PG Bellaire, TX This skilled floor general is asked to perform a different role at times for his high school squad. He’s a scorer for Bellaire, personally I think he is capable of doing both, and that the Cardinals are missing the boat, not putting the ball in Jai’s hands and letting him run show. He had 20 and 21 points in two outings in Peoria. He has Maryland, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, and Kentucky as his current final four…stay tuned…”
November 28th, 2006 at 1:29 pm
anyone have a good site where you can express your displeasure with the current coaching staff and quality of your favorite team without censorship, I’m serious.
November 28th, 2006 at 1:33 pm

November 28th, 2006 at 1:35 pm
We can go on all day about Sheray Thomas and his lack of anything but lets not over look the great performance from Bobby Perry!! These two guys are very important to our ability to win games so let us hope that the two can get their minds clear of all the negative slander they have to deal with and play BB to their expectations. GO CATS!!!!!
November 28th, 2006 at 1:39 pm
Positive:
More Michael Porter! I think the kid can deliver consistently from the perimeter.
I like him an aweful lot. I think he can seriously give double digit points per game by the end of next season if given the opportunity.
+ he hustles no stop - he has the right attitude - he plays defense.
November 28th, 2006 at 1:46 pm
And don’t forget that we’ve played 5 games in 8 days. How do we really make the corrections we need to if we don’t get to practice? Give this team a little time and by the end of the season we won’t even remember that we went 3-2!
November 28th, 2006 at 1:47 pm
Anyone think it would be a good idea to use jaspar and porter as the 1 guards and move Bradley
to the 2 with Joe at 3 as Guard not SF. Three guard lineups can work. Just a thought.
November 28th, 2006 at 1:47 pm
Wow Lenny, couldn’t agree more…with your assessment of the fans that is, don’t know anything about your sphincter, honest.
November 28th, 2006 at 1:48 pm
5 games in 8 days is insane…the team will get better.
November 28th, 2006 at 1:55 pm
MMfiji, I don’t think Joe’s problems with playing the 3 has as much to do with his offense, but more that he is matched up with a longer player that he has to defend. He’s only 6-4, probably really like 6-3. And that’s a pretty big mismatch on rebounding and overall team defense if you have a 6-4 guy as your 3rd biggest player on the floor. Then style of play, if fast and efficient, could negate this if the offense shoots 3’s and long rebounds are available. But in a more slow-down offense like what we’ve seen more often than not, it’s a big disadvantage.
The only way I can see to get away with this is if Jasper plays more of a 3 on defense, allowing Joe to stay on his counterpart at the 2.
November 28th, 2006 at 2:00 pm
Van Coleman opines on Ramon Harris:
“Yes, he was a surprise talent, who will enroll early with UK. He could be what Chuck Hayes was at the Power forward spot. Harris could be the same type of addition at the wing forward.”
November 28th, 2006 at 2:00 pm
Thanks M. Vick appreciate the commentary…its not unheard of for a switch on the defense with
Japar covering the 3 on D. I like smooth but I’ve always wondered about him playing the 1 versus the 2.
November 28th, 2006 at 2:01 pm
Tom that is music.
November 28th, 2006 at 2:01 pm
#56 - Wow…..I didn’t realize we had lost 40% of the last 30 games. It just doesn’t feel right for UK to do that. Hopefully we’ll get back on the winning side tonight.
November 28th, 2006 at 2:04 pm
thanks 74, luv all the cheery stuff after yours too.
November 28th, 2006 at 2:05 pm
It’s happened before. UK was 18-14 from Mar 84 to Mar 85. UK was 18-12 from Mar 86 to Mar 87.
And UK was 19-13 from Nov 78 to Nov 79. Worse yet, 13-14 from Mar 66 to Mar 67. Again 13-14 from Mar 73 to Mar 74.
November 28th, 2006 at 2:08 pm
Hey Matt - why don’t you erase comment 26 referring to one of our players as “one of the most wasted bags of flesh that God breathed life into”. I mean c’mon — that’s absolutely horrible to refer to another human being in that way. I love UK basketball but I tell you … the fans here and on the message boards take this stuff WAY too personal.
November 28th, 2006 at 2:12 pm
#88 - good call on my rant. It was harsh, even if he makes me sick.
November 28th, 2006 at 2:20 pm
Tom Gray, (I’m going to refrain from referring to anyone by their post # in this thread, because surely again more posts will be erased and thus the # reference will no longer have accuracy) - now those are some interesting statistics you’ve just pulled up. Kudos. I imagine that each period of time surely tells a disheartening story, just like this present one does.
I can remember the circumstances surrounding the Mar 84-Mar 85 stretch (Joe B’s swan song), and Mar 86-Mar 87 (young team w/Rex freshman gunner, Rob Lock, 7 passes before a shot, post-Sky Walker era). Each of these periods of time were trumpets of change to come.
But I’m too young to remember the Nov 78-Nov 79 and Mar 66-Mar 67 eras. Is there a historian in the house?
November 28th, 2006 at 2:23 pm
MMfiji - no problem. Good thoughts. As for Crawdaddy @ the 3, you only have to go back (if your brain will allow pain to enter and reside in your mind for a while) to last year’s two matchups between SF Crawford and SF Corey Brewer of Florida. Bad things, man….. Bad things….
November 28th, 2006 at 2:31 pm
#90 actually not. The 66-67 record was followed by 3 superb UK teams in 1968-69-70. Ditto the 73-4 record; it was followed by the 1975-78 teams. The 85-86 numbers were followed by a dandy squad in 1986. And the 79-80 poor results were followed by a 29 W team. Up and down - mostly up, rarely down, but sometimes.
November 28th, 2006 at 2:42 pm
Tom, was the 68-9-70 era the Issel era? Was the 80-81 team a team with a young, uninjured Sam Bowie?
November 28th, 2006 at 2:47 pm
Yes - Issel/Casey/Pratt followed the Mar 66-67 era. The 1980 team had Sam Bowie as a frosh. The 1981 team had Sam Bowie at his (All-American) best but the 1980 team won 29 games; 81 squad only won 22 games.
November 28th, 2006 at 3:02 pm
M. Vick good point about Joe…maybe Meeks? Speed does have its advantages and he does have the ability to score.
November 28th, 2006 at 3:16 pm
M.Vick #80, i agree with what u said at the end of ur post. It has always bee defensively that has gotten Crawdaddy into trouble. By placing Jasper at the 3 on defense, with him as PG on offense, Bradley 2G and Crawford at 3 offensively is what i think needs to happen. Bradley is a good 2G with great offensive mindset but not our PG. That is y we need him at 2G and Jasper & JAI LUCAS running point next year.
November 28th, 2006 at 3:19 pm
Tom, seems to me that the teams in all 4 instances have something huge in common: the influx/maturation of NBA-calibar talent (Issel/Casey/Pratt, Bowie/Turpin, Walker/Bennett, Chapman/Manuel/Ellis).
So, the question becomes this:
Does this current UK team have another level of (NBA calibar) talent to rise up to achieve expected levels of success?
If not, will next year’s team receive an influx NBA calibar talent (Patterson/Lucas/Moses??) to make the jump?
Tubby is either going to have to prove once and for all that he can A) develop the NBA talent purported to be already on this roster or B) recruit impact NBA talent. Without one of those two I’m not sure I can forsee any significant changes from the current 60/40 tilt of wins/losses.
November 28th, 2006 at 3:22 pm
1985 team had exact same personnel as 86 team except Bret Bearup in 85 replaced by Irving Thomas in 1986.
85 = 18-13 and 86 = 32-4.
Point well taken about Issel/Casey/Pratt in late 1960’s.
It goes both ways.
November 28th, 2006 at 3:24 pm
I think Tubby has more than proven that he is the best developer of talent in the NCAA, and not only that, but he has done it in the past without an adequate S&C program.
(examples: Hayes, Estill, Fitch, Bogans, Prince, Daniels and even Azubuike)
Now that Holsopple is on board, UK is THE place to go if players want their natural athletic talent turned into basketball prowess.
This current UK team contains NBA calliber talent starting at 3 positions: PG, SG, and PF (if you consider taht Morris would be a PF in the league), and potential NBA talent at the 3 (Harris and Jasper) and 5 (Jared Carter is being scouted by the league, believe it or not).
November 28th, 2006 at 3:24 pm
#95 Just wondering, did you leave Porter out on purpose for the PG spot?
If he gets quality minutes - he’s better than Ford or Farmer by graduation.
November 28th, 2006 at 3:27 pm
Wasn’t Farmer more of a 2? Wasn’t Woods the PG?
November 28th, 2006 at 3:27 pm
MMfiji and Katdaddy, Meeks definitely reminds me of Bogans in many ways, one of which is the story where he has volunteered to play a much larger opposing player whom Perry couldn’t handle (just like Keith displayed in the McD’s AA game and also at UK). In my humble opinion, his hustle and court IQ could be a welcome switch when it comes to guarding an athletic ‘3′, but I don’t think I’d want to rely on it all season long.
Meeks is still 6′4/6′5 and not an all-world athlete (in comparison to Mhah A Boute (sp?) or Thad Young or C. Brewer). And once again, I still contend that it’s really more about our ability to guard and rebound on the defensive end much moreso than our ability to score. We have enough playmakers and scorers this year. The reason we lost to UCLA and Memphis is that, to this point, this is the WORST defensive team of the Tubby era (even worse than last year’s group).
November 28th, 2006 at 3:29 pm
#100 yip - Farmer was a 2 - sorry
November 28th, 2006 at 3:29 pm
Tom, please note that I also included MATURATION as a reason for the noticeable upswing (which is why I included it– for the 86 team you mentioned). But, overall, agreed.
November 28th, 2006 at 3:32 pm
M.Vick,I think this team has that mix.
November 28th, 2006 at 3:35 pm
Anyone else glad Matt cleaned up the crap?
Good work Matt, GOOOOOOOOOOOOOO CATS !!!!!!!!!!!!!
November 28th, 2006 at 3:36 pm
101. (M. Vick)
Couldn’t agree more - but much of that is due to the lack of experience by our freshmen - we all know this is not an easy system to learn, but when you have a good, athletic core of 5-8 guys who are interchangable parts and who know the system well, the defense is astronomically good.
If Tubby closes out the 2007 class nicely, we’ll have that core set in 2009-2011 and make an incredible run. Just thinking about the possibility of seeing guys like Jasper, Meeks, Stevenson, Porter, Harris, Patterson, Stewart, Moses, Lucas, and Williams as juniors and seniors brings a smile to my face.
Sorry for the digression. Anyway, the problem this year in my eyes is that our core of guys is not really interchangable (Sorry, Bobby, Sheray, and Woo - still like you guys, but I have to be honest) nor are they especially athletically talented. Watching Woo and Bobby with the juniors playing ball-line against Lindsay Wilson looked great - seeing them try it agaist an athletically gifted team like Memphis was like watching a sloth trying to chase a cheetah.
November 28th, 2006 at 3:38 pm
lexslamman, no disrespect, but you’ve got to take the blue-tinted glasses off. You said, “I think Tubby has more than proven that he is the best developer of talent in the NCAA, and not only that, but he has done it in the past without an adequate S&C program.”
Although I do heartily agree with the 2nd part of your statement, I simply don’t see how you can make your first statement with a straight face. For example: Gerald Fitch = Juan Dixon. Which one was ranked higher coming out of high school? Fitch. Which one got drafted? Dixon. Which one is still in the NBA and seeing quaity minutes? Dixon. Gary Williams wins this one.
I love all the other players you mentioned. I agree that they all developed during their time at UK. But I would EXPECT them all to develop. Who on your list got drafted when they shouldn’t have or weren’t expected to? Prince came in as the 10th best player in his class. 1st rounder. Nothing spectacular about that. Bogans, on the other hand, was rated top 10 and he barely got drafted at all. If you want to talk Estill, I’ll raise you an Emeka Okafor, who was rated the same or lower than Marquis and was the 1st pick in the draft. Jim Calhoun wins this one.
I’m not trying to hate on these players to make a point, but I have to call you out on your opinion that you state as fact.
November 28th, 2006 at 3:39 pm
Oh, and to add on to that last post, M. Vick, Harris is athletically talented and long enough to guard any 3 in the SEC, but he is sorely lacking experience playing in the system, which will limit his minutes initially - his best strategy will be to make as many positive things happen in as little time possible while on the court - at first he will not get into the rhythm of the game because his limited minutes will prevent that from happening, so he’ll have to try to be a Cameron Mills kind of ’spark’ player who either hits big shots or makes great defensive plays - if he comes in and does that, not only will that be fine with me, but he’ll earn more of Bobby Perry’s minutes.
November 28th, 2006 at 3:41 pm
Cory Brewer will be an interesting matchup. Jasper may well be the key for our defense against FL. The question is, who does he guard? He is athletic enough, big enough and smart enough to cover Brewer. But, will he be more valuable on Green? Green is who really makes FL go, and someone with Jaspers size might disrupt him and them as a team more than him covering Brewer, maybe enough to allow Perry to defend Brewer as he is slowed down by the pressure on Green. It’s still early, but matchups are always interesting.
November 28th, 2006 at 3:45 pm
Lex, I sure hope, like you, that Harris is every bit as good as hoped/hyped. If so, our problems at the ‘3′ will diminish greatly.
November 28th, 2006 at 3:47 pm
We’ll need Stevenson as big as anyone vs. Florida. I do believe that Jodie would “dee up” well on Brewer considering how well he did on the AA Aflolo @ UCLA.
Nevertheless - it will take a committment to playing as a team to beat the Florida’s of the world.
November 28th, 2006 at 3:50 pm
I posted what Van Coleman (Hoopmasters) said about Harris above. Compared him to Chuck Hayes.
I’ll take another Chuck Hayes.
November 28th, 2006 at 3:50 pm
Undoubtedly. It would be of benefit to have an athletic 3 this year which Harris will be. The realy question becomes how long will take for him to develop. Its helpful we have Santa Clara and Umass and Eastern to play before the conference schedule and maybe that will provide a spark to lead to the tournament. MVick I’m pretty sure Fitch is still in the league though I may be wrong.
November 28th, 2006 at 3:50 pm
107.
There are serious confounding variables in the examples we’re using that throw both our arguments out the window. For example:
Dixon vs. Fitch - Fitch was not only in the doghouse for part of his tenure at UK, but he was also playing along-side NCAA ‘franchise’ type players during his underclassman years - I would be willing to wager that if you compare year-by-year stat-lines, Dixon’s were inflated because he was relied upon to play a larger role earlier than Fitch was.
Though both Fitch and Dixon played a lot of minute as underclassmen, Maryland relied on Dixon more for things like scoring and playmaking, while UK relied on Fitch to play as an additional ball-handler and a rebounder. Guess which stat is more influential when the NCAA makes its decisions?
Estill vs. Okafor - this one is very obvious to me - Estill was a great player who was never healthy and the NBA wasn’t going to take that kind of risk when there was plenty of other talent out there. Estill’s minutes were limited from day one.
November 28th, 2006 at 3:57 pm
Did someone really state that Tubby is the best developer of talent in the NCAA? The same coach with only 2 first round draft picks?
I hope that’s not viewed as negative, but I’m shocked by that statement.
November 28th, 2006 at 4:04 pm
TomS, I said that. Tubby has done amazingly well with the players he’s gotten.
November 28th, 2006 at 4:06 pm
Clearly, OTS is making a last-ditch effort for Patterson by starting Thomas. Doing this exemplifies just how lacking the PF position is at UK.
November 28th, 2006 at 4:07 pm
I really get frustrated when people use “development of talent” as measured by what draft pick a player wen tin the NBA draft. Come on folks….does anyone in America really believe that Tyrus Thomas was the second or third best player in the country last season? Wouldnt anyone have taken JJ Redick or Jameer Nelson in college….neither of whom went high in the draft?
FINALLY PLEASE STOP THE TUBBY DEBATES!!!!
IT truly is driving me crazy and making me enjoy doing this less and less……it is the same people over and over and you know who you are. Just stop it….do it somewhere else…..and stay on topic on these threads.
This thread was about Patterson, Sheray starting and the Music City Bowl….stay on topic or talk about something silly but dont turn every comment into Tubby….it is truly nauseating
November 28th, 2006 at 4:09 pm
AMH, i think that Porter right now would be more of a combo guard, i agree that he is going to be good/great for the program, but in order to get Jai in, we need to keep Porter as a combo guard right now. Also, i think he does have PG skills, but not yet developed enough right now to be running our team. Now, u never know, he might later in the year, but as of right now, i don’t see how Jai would see his play so far and not feel confident in being a better PG. And that is the way i will market it to Jai and im sure that is what the staff has been saying to him that its him and jasper at the point.
November 28th, 2006 at 4:13 pm
#113 Fitch is playing in Turkey (I think).
November 28th, 2006 at 4:14 pm
MMfiji, I just checked both the NBA and NBDL sites and Fitch isn’t listed with either. But I’m sure that someone could tell you where he’s playing right now.
Dixon, on the other hand:
2006-07 Statistics (Portland Trailblazers)
PPG 10.4 RPG 1.30 APG 1.8
Lex, although I can’t argue with your analysis of Dixon vs. Fitch, the issue is how good are they now? Not what did they do in college. I bet you that nobody on the NBA level CARES what role Fitch vs. Dixon had in college. They are always evaluating these players, both in and out of the league. (Remember that I LOVES ME SOME GERALD FITCH), but he (Fitch) had a cup of tea with Miami and Houston last year, but evidently wasn’t “developed” enough to stick with either. Also, as evidenced that he’s not even in the League this year, apparently LOTS of GM’s havent’ been impressed enough with him for him to be signed and on a roster.
Dixon, however, is apparently more “talented”, as referenced to the fact that regardless of where he was drafted, or whether he was Final 4 MVP and won a championship, etc, etc, etc. He’s an important cog TODAY with the Jailblazers, er, Trailblazers. So, Juan IS an example of how Gary Williams more efficiently developed Juan, or Juan is just better TODAY than Gerald is. Like I said, I don’t mean to undress Gerald here, but I simply can’t let it go that Tubby is “the best developer of talent in the NCAA.”

For anyone to say that Jodie Meeks is not a GREAT athlete is just plain and simply, RIDICULOUS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This kid is a freak at his height and size. He was an all-state high jumper in high school as well!
November 28th, 2006 at 4:18 pm
I like Gerald Fitch. Shot almost 40% on 3-point FG for his career. Top 25 on UK career scoring list.
November 28th, 2006 at 4:20 pm
#123 Amen.
November 28th, 2006 at 4:20 pm
On another note…I would truly enjoy a Clemson/Uk matchup in the Music City Bowl. Its two hours from my parents place and I won’t have drive as far as if I was coming from DC…
November 28th, 2006 at 4:21 pm
#109 Ethan, I would like to see the combo of Meeks/Porter to guard Green. Other than the stupid fouls that the refs called on Meeks in Maui, he has been great defensively, and so has Porter. I would love to see them covering him. That is all u can do to keep Jasper guarding the 3 and the rest of the bigs guarding the 4&5 slots. Now if Harris is ready by then, maybe he can help out, he is another long athletic 6′6-6′7 body that even if not ready offensively, will be ok defensively if he is just to go out and play defense.
November 28th, 2006 at 4:22 pm
OH and M VIck… I remembered that he was on Miami last year…evidently Tom found Turkey which isn’t a bd gig.
November 28th, 2006 at 4:22 pm
UHH!!!!!!!!…Don’t you have to leave D.C. anyway ??
November 28th, 2006 at 4:25 pm
Sorry Matt.
Patterson - listened to the interview, still think it’s an extreme longshot to get him (hope I’m wrong).
Sheray - My mama always told me if you can’t say anything good, don’t say anything at all.
Music City - Optimal situation, huge benefit/blessing for the CATS. If Larry Vaught’s afternoon article is accurate, then let’s bring 50,000 and Kick some ACC Butt!!!!
November 28th, 2006 at 4:25 pm
Meeks is no doubt a phenomenal athelete, if someone said different they’re just plain silly.
Matt, the debate goes both ways. It’s hard to allow the pro-Tubby posters to claim he’s the best at _______ and _______ and then claim you don’t want a debate about Tubby. My comment was innocuous, just plain disbelief that someone would say that.
But if it’s not draft picks, then how do you judge talent development at the top colleges? I understand that at WKU that wouldn’t be a good barometer, but at UK that should be a fair measure. Other than that I’m not sure what objective measure you should use.
November 28th, 2006 at 4:28 pm
I like the Liberty Bowl. I think it gives UK a better matchup talent wise, and better chance for a bowl win. IMHO a bowl win is better then playing in a bigger bowl. And it would do something that this program hasn’t done in a long time, win a bowl game. Clemson and BC are both tough matchups for us at this time. Houston or Southern MIss are both winable games.
November 28th, 2006 at 4:35 pm
Patterson - Florida leads but not over yet.
Sheray - he deserves a(nother) chance.
No comment on the bowl game.
November 28th, 2006 at 4:38 pm
#131 (coaching debate aside) I’d judge talent development by lots of ways, including NBA draft.
Few players developed better at UK than Anthony Epps or Chuck Hayes. Neither got drafted.
(1) where does he stand on UK career lists, (2) did he improved year-2-year, (3) All-SEC honors, etc.
November 28th, 2006 at 4:47 pm
No TomS its called being a grownup….you and Tom Gray both need to learn that you DONT NEED TO RESPOND TO EVERY SINGLE THING YOU DISAGREE WITH!!!!!
Let stuff go for goodness sake….
November 28th, 2006 at 4:52 pm
Let me start by saying I love Chuck Hayes, in a non gay sort of way. Probably my favorite Tubby era player(him or Bogans). But I wouldn’t call him an example of great player development. He came to UK as an effort guy that would play defense, hit the boards and a good passer for the post, he was limited offensively. Although he got better as he matured in the areas he was already strong in, he didn’t change/improve his weaknesses very much. He never developed a post game, he didn’t really develop any signature moves. That’s not a knock on the guy, he has more heart and gives more effort than 95% of all other players anywhere. That’s what’s kept him in the NBA, but he didn’t develop new skills in college. Estill/Daniels would be a better example of guys developing skills while in college. IMO.
If you’re looking at development follow the college careers of post men at Duke. Those guys leave with 2-3 go to moves in the post that they didn’t come to school with. Sheldon Williams was a beast with an up and under move, drop step, and turn around by his senior. That’s what I think of when you’re considering development.
November 28th, 2006 at 4:54 pm
Matt, don’t you think my response was holding my tongue(figuratively). I just believe if you’re going for no coach debates you have to police both sides. If you’re going for only positive stuff then that’s ok too, just let us know.
I’m not knocking the site, it’s fun. Just posting my thoughts.
But never forget, you’re only young once, but immaturity lasts forever.
November 28th, 2006 at 4:56 pm
“I think Tubby has more than proven that he is the best developer of talent in the NCAA.”
Had to stop reading the post after that sentence.
My eyes started bleeding.
November 28th, 2006 at 5:11 pm
#135 just re-read this entire topic start-2-finish. Saw nothing where I even mentioned a coach.
UK history, yes. Recruiting or player information, yes. But nothing about coaches.
That’ll do it.
November 28th, 2006 at 5:15 pm

toilet facilities for such crap, thank you and good-night.

Loother, you mean “Nike”? (j/k) LOL!
November 28th, 2006 at 5:33 pm
Ok, I just finished reading the entire thread. I’m going to vomit now. I’m so sick of the same old rehashed agenda/debate/argument discussions.
Here’s my opinion, I think Uk was so close to coming away from Maui 3-0. If Bradley has 3 less turnovers, Uk beats the #5 team in the country. Which in turn means they play the late game the next day. UCLA had no problems with Ga-Tech, and I believe Uk would have won that game as well. My point is, they were so close, and it’s still early in the season. I think alot of you folks are going to be very surprised with how well this team performs this year. Can’t believe people are already throwing in the towel.
November 28th, 2006 at 5:35 pm
I have to believe that the following quote was intended to be provocative. “I think Tubby has more than proven that he is the best developer of talent in the NCAA.” Where is the substance to support that assertion? In fact, Kentucky is a place where talent goes to stagnate. Top talent has been slow to develop under Tubby, if at all…and his lack of success in recruiting top players is recogition of Tubby’s lacck of attention to player development.
November 28th, 2006 at 5:39 pm
Provocative…..now there’s a word you don’t see everyday.

Matt’s not yours! Leave, plenty of places to speak your stuff. I would really like to know
where the people who really hate Tubby (justified or not) live? W/in Kentucky or outside? I’m
guessing the majority live w/in the borders… because in 22 years outside of
this commonwealth (22 yrs USAF) I’ve never seen so much crap. And, I have met some awesome UK
fans thru out the world!!!! I’m as frustrated as many of you are about some of the decisions
that are made, but I also remember a lot of frustration at the end of Joe B. Hall’s career–
a lot!!! This freshman class is the real deal and I hope we can pull in at least PP or Jai
(both would be great)w/some of the others Matt has mention.
