Today marked the end of an era…..granted it wasnt a storied era, it was the Mike Shula era…..but it ended either way. Alabama football, a bit like Indiana basketball, has long sought to go back to an era that has long since past and thus demands GREATNESS…..and greatness has evaded them. Whether it was Mike Price cavorting with ladies of the night, Dennis Franchione leaving for the greener pastures of a place called College Station or Mike Shula adding very little but an attractive wife, Alabama just aint Alabama anymore and the Rammer Jammer Yellow Hammers simply will not stand for it any longer.
So who will the Tide bring in? Well I am sure lots of big names will be bandied about all those delusional enough in Tuscaloosa to think that anyone cares (there were some who even argued that the Iron Bowl two weeks ago would be bigger than Ohio St-Michigan). Thus you will likely hear people whisper about Jimmy Johnson, Bill Belichek and Knute Rockne. But ultimately the best bet would be someone like Rich Rodriquez or Bobby Petrino and they more than likely will end up with someone underwhelming like Bob Davie or whoever happens to be coaching Boise State or BYU.
I for one am sad to see the Shula era end. Mike always looked to be slightly clueless on the sideline….which made me smile. He had a face similar to that given by a celebrity watching a Republican speech…..baffled bemusement….disagreement with what is going on, but not really an understanding of what is being spoken about. Shula always seemed to be one step slow and his team’s often reflected that. But I for one thought his wife was really hot and he wore a nice red hat….so I would have supported him. But alas poor Yorick, it twas not to be. What does the future hold…..only Gene Stallings can truly know.
And dont turn this into a Tubby debate…..although I know you want to….

No debates here it well known by now that Matt is a Liberal which is cool. It is a freee country and we still have the 1st ammendment. As for Shula I am not sure he was given enough time. You have to give any coach at least 5 years. My reasoning is the previous guys players are gone and we get to see what your all about.

Alabama actually hired Shula, before they fired him.
His problem was that he put the Alabama playbook into a lockbox (then couldn’t get it open on gameday).

Just curious Matt, why do you always put “whoever is coaching at BYU” on your list of coaching candidates? Having graduated from BYU I have a little different perspective and I think it would be hard to pull a coach away. Not that it couldn’t be done, especially for a place like Alabama that could offer more money than just about anyone else. BYU is a religious university and a requirement for any head coach is that they must be an active member of the Mormon faith in good standing. For many in the Mormon community, the BYU head coach is the best position available. The coaches name, I believe, is Bronco Mendenhal.

Everyone knew that Shula was a desperate hiring after the stripper fiasco with Price. His good record last year simply got in the way of firing the guy.
In my opinion Bama has a much better shot at making a great hire then Miami. The U has a small fan base and terrible facilities but they do have a great high school talent base. Should be an interesting off season.

#8 my family is LDS. I don’t think the BYU coach has to be LDS. That would be discriminatory.
The coach DOES have to abide by a certain code of acceptable behavior.

One of my good friends at law school went to BYU for undergrad. When he told me they hired someone named Bronco Mendenhall, I told him that I didn’t even need to see his resume to know he’d be a solid coach. With a name like that, your destiny in life is to become a football player/coach, professional wrestler, rodeo cowboy, or a character actor who is always cast as a thug in a Seagal or Stallone movie.

#5- you hit the nail right on the head. Shula joins Bill Curry as another former tide coach who never beat Auburn. I guess if you can’t beat Auburn in football while coaching Alabama the job security shortens very quick.
Would be interesting to see if Bobby Petrino interviews w/ Bama. If he takes the job, UK wouldn’t have to face him very often. Interesting Iron Bowl matchups would occur every November between Tuberville and Petrino, if Petrino took the bama job.

Buzz Peterson seemed to have that same expression a lot, especially during his last year with UT. When UK throttled them in the SEC tourney in ‘05, I always enjoyed it when the camera cut to Buzz, who seemed to be pleading with the refs constantly and saying “Aww, Gawlee” and “Well shuckins” and nothing else.

Shula was 10-2 last year, gets an extension and then is out the door. Alabama AD has hired four coaches in 6 seasons, that is not healthy for any program. I think the University of Alabama should get a new AD.

#13, I am pretty sure that to be a coach at BYU, at least to be a head coach, you need to be LDS. And it’s not discriminatory because the BYU is funded entirely by private donations. The 14th amendment of the constitution is what most of the anti-discrimination laws are founded on. The 14th amendment only applies to states and state actors (people working for the state in departments and agencies). A lot of state universities receive federal and state funds, thus exposing the to the anti-discrimination statutes. BYU, being a strictly private institution, is not bound by the same statutes because they are not a state actor. That is why private groups like the Boy Scouts of America can keep homosexual leaders from joining their ranks. They didn’t give me an A- in Constitutional Law I and II for nothing.
