Cats “womp” Auburn 75-53

After a few close games in SEC play, Calipari wondered if his team had the ability to “womp” an opponent. I think tonight’s 22 point victory over Auburn, a game in which Kentucky played with more energy and emotion than we’ve seen in weeks, classifies as that kind of win. Auburn was still within 5 at halftime, but Kentucky was able to finally put the foot on the gas pedal and run away with a big win on the road. Even more encouraging than the margin of victory? The demeanor of this team throughout the game, especially during the big run in the second half. When Archie Goodwin and Kyle Wiltjer engaged in a chest bump, I could almost hear the heart monitors being tucked away somewhere in Lexington.

Kyle Wiltjer had another great performance tonight, finishing with 17 points points to lead all scorers. Nerlens Noel fought off early foul trouble to finish with 10 points, 9 rebounds and 7 blocks. Kentucky moves to 3-1 in the SEC. Auburn falls to 2-2. As one of the KSR Live Bloggers said….”Awww…burned.”

Somewhere an Auburn fan is still chanting “Air Ball.”

Hopefully this was good enuf to get us back in Top 25.

  2. LansingCat Says:

    Sweeeeeettt!!!

  3. Brink Says:

1 ill be good if it gets us back to receiving votes

  4. Bird in Kentucky Says:

They actually played very smart tonight. The whole team played very well. They needed a win like this, hopefully it will get them more motivated. Only complaint is I wish Mays would quit trying to act like he is some bad ass. He is far from it. GO CATS!

  5. SCCat Says:

Great effort all around. harrow was a monster, Noel was a monster, Kyle hit jumpers and passed great – fun game to watch…keep it rollin BLUE!

  6. jeff Says:

#4. What did Mays do? I don’t remember him acting like that at all. Did he do something wrong that I must have missed?

  7. Ridge Runner Says:

The injury has fired this team up as I said before. It may have been the missing ingredient. Hell, there is no more new items to teach or coach and perhaps this is the very thing which is needed. Will it continue? The million-dollar question that only the team can answer. Again…coaching, Camp Cal, game experience, individual workouts, and there is nothing new to relate for these guys. Will we look back and say yet another team gained a spark and team-togetherness based on an injury to a significant player? Time will tell.

  8. Han Says:

Noel’s dunk would’ve been number 1 on Sportscenter Top 10… Then Butler won on a floater with .1 seconds left. Wow.

Glad to see the team play better as a whole. Poythress finishing, Noel with active hands when on the court, Harrow, Wiltjer and Mays getting assists, Archie’s crazy shots going in. Good times. Can’t wait til we get WCS back, too.

  9. tom Says:

    1. you are joking…aren’t you???!!!

  10. Han Says:

Man, it hurts seeing Noel on the bench with foul trouble in the first half. You could see how much he wanted to be on the floor, the fire in his eyes. If we could give his confidence and fire to Poythress too, we’d be set.

  11. Bhamilton Says:

Maybe Bledsoe’s grandmother should visit every game.

  12. UKUKUK1865 Says:

Finally we beat a bad team by 20+ points. Maybe we are getting better.

  13. theSkinny81 Says:

Auburn sucks, but it was a good win for our guys regardless. They seemed to play loose, for a change.

  14. Ridge Runner Says:

    Great win!

ridge runner, completely agree. it was the spark I think as well. Lets hope it continues.

  15. mudcreekmark Says:

Go back and check my pregame comments. I will keep preaching it though, Kyle Wiltjer will be the key to how far this team goes. He has to play 30 plus minutes a game and has to lead us in scoring. The kid is awful on defense but is terrific on offense.Noel and WCS can help erase some of his mistakes on defense if played right.I keep saying it, we should post him up and run our offense thru him. You see what happens, he either scores or makes a great pass.

  16. AndrewH Says:

Really proud of the way the team played tonight three things.

    1. The intensity rebounding pushing the tempo passing just overall flow in the second half was amazing best all year.

    2. Kyle Wiltjer was awesome we have to have him doing this on offense if we want to be good.

    3. This lineup I believe helped a lot Alex Poythress I really believe is a 4, but if Kyle is in he has to play the three any way loved this game. GO BIG BLUE beat bama

  17. Ignorant uk fan Says:

Oh so Cauley-stein is the cancer!!!!

  18. Ridge Runner Says:

14, you are not “me”, sir. Why would you write that dude? Damn. Trolls are getting so retarded.

  19. Buckets Says:

    Butler-Gonzaga ending was fantastic.

  20. Bird in Kentucky Says:

    Why was my post deleted?

  21. Don't spread rumors Says:

WCS had a minor (if there is such thing as minor) surgery on his knee! Had nothing whatsoever to do with cancer!

  22. Bird in Kentucky Says:

Now it says this – Your comment is awaiting moderation. Can’t have an opinion on here?

  23. JBR Says:

Good win…but Poythress is just the biggest wuss we have ever had. He plays so weak…good thing Wiltjer, Harrow and Noel came to play…and Polson. That kid has heart.

  24. niaps Says:

Good win over a bad team by 22 points and having fun doing it. That was UK ball for a change. Kyle Wiltger just gives this team so many scoring options he s wasted on the bench.

  25. Ridge Runner Says:

Poythress is showing signs though. Any indication a player is doing that means to me there is still time for him to unleash.

I’m ok with everyones positives tonight and won’t criticize any player for a change. Just too many “ups” for the first time to go down that road after a win on the road like that.

  26. mudcreekmark Says:

24)Thank you sir. I have been saying it all year and I have been taking a beating on here by the Wiltjer haters. Mays averaging 34 minutes a game and Wiltjer only getting 22 is just crazy.

  27. uk true fan Says:

a good win over bad team? we made their butts look bad if anybody watched the game we finally played defense.this was a game in hostile place. had 5 in double figures. heck thats good any where. some of you fans just cant be happy. love my cats go big blue

  28. Mudcreekmark & Han & Ridge Runner Says:

    Cats and we suck

  29. Eric K Says:

Good win, team acts like they are starting to put it together, hope they keep it up! GO CATS!!

  30. mudcreekmark Says:

As you saw again tonight, Poythress cannot dribble the ball good enough to take it to the rim off the dribble. His baskets came on backdoor cuts and great passes for dunks. He had one rebound at half time when Noel had to sit most of the first half because of fouls.

  31. RealCatsFan Says:

Saw on the news where Pitino’s horse “Russdiculous” (yes, he really named it that) was leading most of the race today and lost down the stretch. It has a certain kind of symmetry, doesn’t it? :)

  32. Drew is a Duke fan Says:

Great win! They were having fun. This game is the turning point.

  33. TH606 Says:

WOMP! There it is! Nice to see some rebounding with WCS out and Noel on the bench for an extended period. Looked like a TEAM tonight.

  34. RealCatsFan Says:

It was great to see these kids playing with passion and reckless abandon in a hostile environment on the road. They looked like a team tonight, really played unselfish and moved the ball well tonight, and as a byproduct, they played loos and really looked like they were having fun. Keep it up, guys!

  35. Ridge Runner Says:

    31, RealCats…awesome irony indeed. haha

  36. mudcreekmark Says:

Cats seemed to have more fun tonight than they have all year. Second half may have been the best they have played all year.

  37. Ap Says:

Gotta say, some of you need to learn the definition of sarcasm. Some of you also need to go back and read your posts and kick yourself.

Glad to see us with a little hop in our step.

  38. OMG Says:

#21 …. hahahaha, did you really think #17 was suggesting that WCS has knee cancer?! So funny….It’s an EXPRESSION….made my night

  39. Bobbum man Says:

Yea love the 10 hammered guys still goin with the air ball chant at the end of the game, that had to get annoying
